[0:00] [Applause] [0:00] [Music] [0:00] [Applause] [0:02] whatever just have a quiet cause did you [0:07] know that in chapter 16 in the first [0:09] book both of Harry's friends get a final [0:11] time to show their unique skills however [0:14] Hermione's final time to shine the [0:15] potion riddle was cut from the movie [0:17] adaptation originally Harry and Hermione [0:19] leaved the wizard chess match after [0:21] Ron's sacrifice and come across seven [0:23] potions on a table three of the potions [0:26] are poisoned two or wine one will allow [0:28] Hermione to go back to Ron and the other [0:30] will allow Harry to go forward when this [0:32] was cut they changed her special moment [0:34] to be the devil's snare trap where she [0:35] can identify this strange plant [0:37] strangling them and know what to do [0:38] about it [0:39] in the book the devil snare trap is a [0:40] group effort where the disposition of [0:42] each friend gets them closer to the [0:43] solution Devil's snare Devils snare what [0:46] did the professor say it likes the dark [0:48] in the damp so light a fire Harry choked [0:51] yes of course but there's no wood [0:53] Hermione cried wringing her hands have [0:55] you gone mad Ron bellowed are you a [0:58] witch or not it's in character for [1:00] Hermione to forget to use magic to solve [1:02] this problem when she's panicked but [1:04] it's better for the structure of the [1:05] movies story if she gets to have her [1:07] moment Ron will get his moment later [1:09] when he beats the magical wizard [1:10] chessboard despite the fact that he not [1:12] only had to protect his king but his [1:14] friends as well so maybe Ron didn't need [1:16] to remind Hermione that she was a witch [1:17] in that scene but you know what he [1:19] really didn't need to do he really [1:21] didn't need to do this there are a lot [1:36] of people out there on the wild [1:38] internets who believe that the movies [1:40] made Ron a lame comic relief character [1:42] or they made him too mean so they [1:44] stopped liking him some go as far as to [1:47] say that the movies ruined Ron Weasley [1:49] and they dislike or hate one of the most [1:52] important characters in a series they [1:54] otherwise loved my thesis statement for [1:57] this video is this in my opinion what's [1:59] mangling Ron in the devil snare scene [2:01] and most of the time throughout the [2:02] series is the impulse to make Ron look [2:04] oh fish silly or mean for a joke when it [2:07] really wasn't necessary [2:09] somewhere along the line Harry went from [2:11] having two friends who were smart in [2:12] different ways to having a smart [2:14] and a lesser sidekick who is having his [2:16] skills observations and lines absorbed [2:19] by his best friends [2:20] the main consensus of people I've talked [2:22] to about this summarize the problem as [2:24] they made Ron a goof to make Hermione a [2:26] cool proactive role model for little [2:28] girls to look up to [2:29] that explains scenes like this where her [2:31] mind he's taking a line from Ron he [2:33] wants to kill Harry you'll have to kill [2:35] us too but how do you explain stuff like [2:37] this and dialogue changes as infamous as [2:44] this your parents are dead you have no [2:51] family I think it flies under the radar [2:53] how often Ron's characterization has to [2:55] bend to give Harry cool moments [2:57] impactful moments or just softening up [2:59] the text a little bit to make our [3:01] protagonists less flawed [3:02] so now begins our exploration of the two [3:04] Ron's the Ron Weasley from the Harry [3:06] Potter movie series and the Ron Weasley [3:09] of the book series written by JK Rowling [3:13] in book 2 chapter 7 Draco calls Hermione [3:16] a mudblood it's a word both she and [3:18] Harry have never heard before but they [3:20] know it's nasty because immediately [3:21] chaos erupts around them Ron tries to [3:24] attack Draco but his spell backfires [3:26] because his wand was broken in Chapter [3:28] five later while vomiting up slugs Ron [3:31] explains the general concept of pure [3:33] blood supremacy and why he thinks it's [3:34] wrong he concludes by pointing out that [3:36] Neville Longbottom is a pureblood wizard [3:39] and he's kind of garbage at magic [3:41] currently in the movie Ron spends the [3:44] scene vomiting slugs Steve clubs gets a [3:48] lot of criticism for bias I do think [3:50] some people go too far when they start [3:51] psychoanalyzing him and concocting weird [3:53] conspiracy theories but what is clear to [3:56] me is that seven of the Harry Potter [3:58] movies were written by a dude whose [3:59] favorite character is Hermione and [4:01] Hermione because she's so well-read is [4:03] also his favorite vessel for giving [4:05] exposition should Ron get this moment [4:08] using his unique background to serve as [4:10] a cultural ambassador hmm I don't know [4:13] this seems kind of about Hermione right [4:16] isn't it more sad if she explains it [4:19] Ron's busy with his slug vomiting let's [4:21] just use him as comic relief it's not a [4:23] big deal Hermione probably read about it [4:25] in a book [4:26] here's a DVD extra from Chamber of [4:28] Secrets steve hermione is a character [4:31] who've said in the past is one of your [4:33] favorites does that make her easier to [4:34] write yeah I mean I like writing all [4:37] three but I've always loved writing [4:39] remaining because I just one she's she's [4:42] she's a tremendous character for a lot [4:44] of reasons for a writer which also she [4:45] can carry exposition and in a wonderful [4:47] way because you just assume she read it [4:49] in a book my research tells me that long [4:51] ago in the time between the first books [4:53] release in the year of 1997 and the [4:56] first movies release in the year of 2001 [4:59] Ron was actually a more popular [5:03] character than Hermione [5:04] in fact when Rowling met cloves for the [5:07] first time she was really nervous about [5:08] what this American was going to do to [5:10] her baby but she felt more at ease when [5:13] he told her that his favorite character [5:15] was Hermione which was something Rowling [5:17] very rarely heard from anyone cloves [5:19] love for this little strong-willed [5:20] bookworm got entwined with Emma Watson's [5:23] growing passion for her role in the [5:25] internal life of the character she was [5:27] playing now I understand that Alfonso [5:29] had they've changed and now into the [5:54] third yeah I felt really so pleased with [5:58] myself why am I in the next Lana comes [6:04] in with all sixteen pages and clothes [6:06] never stop loving Hermione she's still [6:09] his favorite what I'm trying to say here [6:10] is that there doesn't have to be a grand [6:12] conspiracy for this to happen people [6:14] working on the movie don't have to hate [6:16] Ron to lose the threat of who he is they [6:18] only have to consistently enough value [6:20] other things over his characterization [6:22] and development and well someone has to [6:25] be your least favorite right it's [6:26] natural that that which interests you [6:28] the most draws your attention unless [6:30] you're being very careful in any one [6:33] scene changed there is almost always a [6:35] logical explanation for why they changed [6:37] it it's just one of those things where [6:39] you don't know [6:40] how far you've drifted until you take a [6:42] step back so what you said you know who [6:44] my favorite character isn't I thought it [6:45] was gonna say mom yeah and I love wrong [6:52] everyone loves who couldn't love wrong [6:54] and I thought okay you love wrong okay [6:58] and then you said Oh Hermione come up [7:02] with another clever idea to get us [7:04] killed or worse expelled she when I [7:15] examine how Ron and Hermione changed [7:17] through the adaptation I think about [7:18] their friendship and eventual romance [7:20] and marriage honestly I think Harry [7:23] Potter doesn't have super strong writing [7:25] behind it's romantic subplots but the [7:28] movies could see ahead of time how [7:30] people were reacting to the books so [7:32] they had a chance to steer into the skid [7:34] and try to make it better let's see how [7:36] they did has one gone to bed oh yeah [7:47] shoelace [8:01] Merry Christmas re oops it's worse the [8:04] only way to really explain it is that [8:06] the movies have this strong aversion to [8:09] Ron and Hermoine as a couple as well as [8:11] Harry and Ginny especially Harry and [8:13] Jenny the situation with Ginny and the [8:16] beige dishrag off' occasion of her [8:17] character is so bad it deserves its own [8:20] video but trying to stay on topic it [8:22] tells me something that Ron and Hermione [8:24] moments that would take no extra time [8:26] are still downplayed and underutilized [8:32] when Ron hears the screams of Hermione [8:35] being tortured he should be yelling like [8:37] he did in the book repressed reactions [8:40] can be cool you know shaking sweating [8:42] but this ain't it chief this is way too [8:44] repressed maybe he doesn't even care cuz [8:46] it sounds like they only got a few [8:47] seconds of Emma screaming and just [8:49] played it on a loop [8:58] [Music] [9:02] oh you can't fool me that's a bloody [9:04] tape recorder throughout the series run [9:06] and Hermoine bicker a lot but when I [9:08] reread the books and remember all the [9:10] random little things they started [9:12] bickering about these exchanges don't [9:14] come off to me as a failure in them [9:16] being able to get along it comes off [9:17] more like they're bored and that this is [9:19] fun to them Hermione can be intolerant [9:22] of certain personality types she also [9:24] loves to debate she's argumentative Ron [9:27] is one of the few people that Hermione [9:29] can go fold the Bay Club on that will [9:31] argue back and not get upset or take it [9:33] personally Harry thinks they argue too [9:35] much but considering that they can [9:37] become offended by Harry interrupting [9:38] them or telling them to stop hints that [9:40] Harry is not experiencing their [9:43] bickering the way they are what I liked [9:45] about this dynamic was I never really [9:46] had to question if Ron respected [9:48] Hermione he is consistently on her side [9:51] he knows she's a know-it-all he's aware [9:52] of her flaws but he still likes her and [9:54] he sees the strengths those flaws bring [9:57] Ron will defend Hermione when people go [9:59] too far five points from Gryffindor for [10:02] being an insufferable know-it-all [10:04] Hermione went very red put her hand down [10:06] and stared at the floor with her eyes [10:08] full of tears it was a mark of how much [10:10] the class loathed Snape that they were [10:12] all glaring at him because every one of [10:13] them had called Hermione and know-it-all [10:15] at least once and Ron who told Hermione [10:17] she was a know-it-all at least twice a [10:19] week said loudly you asked us a question [10:21] and she knows the answer why ask if you [10:24] don't want to be told [10:25] movie ron has fewer opportunities to [10:27] engage in this behavior as is the nature [10:30] of an adaptation of a book but Ron does [10:32] not always use his time well [10:34] like what is this that is the second [10:37] time you've spoken out of turn Miss [10:38] Granger are you incapable of restraining [10:40] yourself or do you take pride in being [10:42] an insufferable know-it-all [10:44] he's called point [10:46] [Music] [10:48] I hate it I don't like it I'm not a fan [10:54] of it but cron is aware past book one [11:01] that Hermione is hyper competent in [11:03] magic I've been emasculated by losing to [11:06] a girl at something being a dude gave me [11:08] no advantage in did you see me disarmed [11:19] Hermione Harry only once said Hermione [11:21] stung [11:22] I got you loads more than you got me I [11:24] did not only get you once I got you at [11:27] least three times well if you're [11:29] counting the one where you tripped over [11:30] your own feet and knocked the wand out [11:32] of my hand this is actually the movie [11:34] Steve cloves didn't work on although I [11:37] guess you could argue his [11:38] characterization was already set in [11:39] stone at this point book Hermione is [11:42] pretty canonically the one who is the [11:44] most skilled with magic on a technical [11:46] sense she has by the book perfect form [11:48] and she's the best at Wanless magic [11:50] she's not really the best at fighting [11:52] because she has a hard time functioning [11:53] under the pressure of real danger [11:55] but yeah anyway book ron is not [11:57] threatened by her in this chapter ron is [11:59] happy about being able to win a few [12:01] rounds against Hermione because he knows [12:03] she's talented and Hermione is being a [12:06] sore loser about the few times she lost [12:08] Ron Hermione get into a couple of [12:10] notable fights throughout the series [12:12] like their fight and Prisoner of Azkaban [12:29] the Scabbers Crookshanks fight is a [12:31] pretty solid example of Hermione not [12:33] being able to people real well Hermione [12:36] is in denial that Crookshanks probably [12:38] ate Scabbers Ron is actually wrong [12:40] because Scabbers is Peter Pettigrew but [12:42] all he wanted was for her to take [12:44] seriously that Crookshanks wanted to eat [12:46] Scabbers and keep Crookshanks under [12:48] control and after his rat disappears he [12:51] just wants an apology he wants Hermione [12:53] to admit that she was wrong they argued [12:55] Hermione stormed off in tears to the [12:57] girls dorm Harry thinks it's gonna be [12:59] the end of their friendship [13:01] Hermione went to Hagrid's hut to cry [13:03] this was a big deal in the movie [13:06] Hermione's a little indignant and Ron [13:07] whines at her a few times about it maybe [13:18] you should take better care of your pets [13:20] your cat killed him so the conflict [13:25] doesn't feel important it's kind of like [13:26] a background argument you're seeing less [13:29] of Hermione's flaws she's looking a [13:31] little smooth [13:33] she's an airbrushed Hermione the Yule [13:35] Ball boy on the other hand highlights [13:36] all aspects of Ron's awkward social and [13:39] maturity as it should the night begins [13:41] with Hermione having her Cinderella [13:42] moment and ends in a fight with Ron it's [14:01] not an exact recreation it doesn't [14:03] happen in the Gryffindor common room but [14:05] it's basically the same fight given the [14:07] same way exposing the same flaws [14:10] actually if anything I'd argue it's [14:12] harsher and that feels out of place to [14:14] me now because this was supposed to be a [14:16] back and forth exchange last movie was [14:18] Hermione's turned to be wrong and this [14:20] is Ron's turn this is how they grow but [14:23] I can't help but recognize the external [14:25] factors to why this happened [14:27] walking into the set of the Yule Ball [14:30] was absolutely amazing everyone had to [14:34] pretend they were in awe when they came [14:35] in I think is really genuine actually [14:37] it's the best that I've seen so far I [14:40] think the description in the novel is [14:42] that it's a kind of ice palace really [14:44] there are icicles hanging from the magic [14:46] ceiling so we've taken that maybe a step [14:50] further when I went in I was absolutely [14:54] gobsmacked I cannot tell you how [14:56] beautiful everything looks you recognize [14:59] it as exactly the same space but the [15:00] transformation is nonetheless pretty [15:02] complete [15:05] the whole thing of course looked like [15:08] Swarovski crystal [15:09] and was stunning two people fighting [15:12] about a rat and a cat is a very simple [15:14] personality driven conflict it's not [15:17] really as exciting as a winter ball at [15:19] Hogwarts where everyone has to find a [15:21] date Oh romance Oh coming-of-age stuff [15:24] turning the Great Hall into a frozen [15:26] Wonderland was a massive undertaking [15:28] look at this set look at all this stuff [15:31] look at all these costumes and all these [15:33] people who have to learn to dance they [15:36] wrote this scene to have some weight [15:37] they were really proud of this they put [15:39] a lot of work into this scene that is [15:42] barely 10 minutes of the movie but then [15:44] you have to take a step back this more [15:46] perfect version of Hermione is not [15:48] helping this dynamic it starts looking [15:50] less and less like they're growing up [15:52] and trying to become their best selves [15:54] together and more and more like this [15:56] smooth Hermione is either trying to fix [15:58] Ron or is waiting for him to become a [16:00] smooth Ron and that's kind of sad right [16:03] vote for the characters and the fans but [16:05] also for cloves he said one of the [16:07] reasons that he was so drawn to Hermione [16:09] was because he saw her as the outcast of [16:12] the outcasts he thought she was [16:19] complicated and hard to love and that [16:21] makes it seem like he couldn't capture [16:22] what he liked about her [16:24] Hermione is not an effortless genius [16:26] she's a genius through effort she [16:28] studies hard no matter how boring the [16:29] professor is the amount of time she [16:31] sinks into this comes at the cost of [16:33] other things movie Hermione has not [16:36] completely lost her flaws I think that's [16:37] an exaggeration but she's not nearly as [16:40] flawed as she was in the books I can [16:42] confidently say that book Hermione needs [16:44] her friends just as much as they need [16:46] her Harry headed straight back to [16:48] Gryffindor common room where he found [16:49] Ron and Hermione playing chess chess was [16:51] the only thing Hermione ever lost at [16:53] something Harry and Ron thought was very [16:55] good for and it was true because [16:57] Hermione was no character though and it [16:59] stayed throughout because I think she'd [17:02] such this huge intelligence but it was [17:06] really a kind of exasperating [17:08] frustrating character in a way though it [17:10] was like the girl that bothers you in [17:11] school thinking about her so not always [17:15] the easiest to like [17:17] I like that about that's what I liked [17:19] about her I'm one by the way from [17:23] Weasley [17:24] I'm Harry Harry Potter as I said before [17:27] it's not surprising to me that when [17:29] discussing what happened to Ron everyone [17:31] focuses on Hermione and Harry gets to [17:33] fly under the radar if you go okay [17:35] Hermione stolen Ron's lying here that's [17:41] kind of easy to understand right how [17:43] Harry warps Ron is more structural in [17:45] fiction people often think it's a good [17:47] idea to give your audience a blank slate [17:48] character to attach themselves to so [17:50] that they can learn about the world this [17:52] character inhabits this character can [17:54] ask questions that we would want to ask [17:56] we're like alien parasites doing recon [17:58] through an empty false vessel book Harry [18:00] does contain details that make him not a [18:03] total blank slate to me despite [18:04] stereotypes about people with glasses on [18:07] the nerd to jock false dichotomy Harry [18:09] is more of a jock interested in sports [18:11] sport teams and physical activities his [18:14] grades are fine but he's not a very [18:15] intellectually curious person [18:17] he tends to only go out of his way to [18:19] learn new spells if he needs it for [18:20] class or just survive some trial like [18:22] when he learned Akio for the first task [18:24] in book 4 although he tries to be [18:26] outwardly polite he can be judgmental [18:28] and it takes a lot for him to change his [18:29] mind about someone [18:30] Harry struggles for a long time to see [18:32] the adults in his life as complicated [18:33] flawed people until their [18:35] three-dimensional nasai min the face [18:36] like a sweaty soggy slab a salami in [18:39] fact his stubbornness is one of the main [18:41] reasons many of the plot twists work [18:43] Harry's personality is not as quirky as [18:45] other characters who inhabit his world [18:46] but you know it's hard to look unique [18:48] when you have dragon loving half giant [18:50] sand sock loving house elves running [18:51] around you may have noticed a lot of [18:53] this stuff I just listed has more to do [18:54] with Harry's thoughts and opinions a [18:56] thing the movie does not narrate to us [18:58] these two characters make all the same [19:00] decisions and yet they come off as [19:01] really different it's kind of cool how [19:03] important that internal narration is to [19:05] the story's protagonist the way I would [19:07] summarize the change between book Harry [19:08] and movie Harry is the temperature has [19:10] been lowered this isn't spicy Harry he's [19:13] at most a little zesty he is overall a [19:16] smooth Harry the removal of Harry's [19:18] internal dialogue makes him seem less [19:20] judgemental and angry when how much he [19:22] resents or is disgusted by other people [19:24] is left to your imagination his [19:26] temptation to do bad things becomes a [19:28] little more surprising as a result is a [19:30] character whose [19:31] kamar Meeker and has more of a sweetness [19:33] about him here's a rude fact in the book [19:36] very often Hermione was kind of the [19:38] unfavorite friend Harry can be really [19:40] rude about her in his internal narration [19:42] calling her shrill bossy or hysterical [19:44] I'd argue Harry grew a deeper [19:46] appreciation for Hermione the older he [19:48] got he loves her to death they have [19:50] their own unique bond but in terms of [19:52] just hanging out she's not the funnest [19:53] person to be around so he kind of favors [19:56] Ron you miss him Hermione said [19:58] impatiently and I know he misses you [20:00] miss him said Harry I don't miss him [20:03] but this was a downright lie Harry liked [20:05] Hermione very much but she just wasn't [20:07] the same as Ron there was much less [20:09] laughter and a lot more hanging out in [20:11] the library when Hermione was your best [20:13] friend and it comes up when Hermione [20:15] fights with Ron she feels strongly that [20:17] Harry favors Ron in that she's the more [20:20] expendable friend she's not unaware that [20:23] people see her as a buzzkill okay side [20:25] with Ron I knew you would she said [20:27] shrilly first the fireball [20:29] now Scabbers everything's my fault isn't [20:32] it movie Harry feels more like Hermione [20:34] his best friend and I think it's because [20:35] he's quiet and we're not privy to all [20:37] his negative thoughts about her because [20:39] of this I think the bond between movie [20:41] Harry and movie Hermione gains a lot [20:43] more chemistry and is drained of some of [20:45] its more awkward elements because you [20:46] can just kind of pretend that Harry [20:48] always gets her and is always [20:49] sympathetic to her Harry can still be [20:51] immature and Ron is his best friend [20:53] who's more on his level mentally that [20:55] friendship is really important to Harry [20:57] it's not an accident that ron was put on [20:58] the bottom of the lake during the second [21:00] task harry was really actively sad when [21:03] Ron stopped talking to him in that book [21:06] [Music] [21:11] here's another thing to chew on the [21:13] movie has to invent what Ron is doing in [21:15] scenes where Harry is not describing [21:17] what he's doing [21:18] the Aragog seen from Chamber of Secrets [21:20] uses Ron as comic relief having him make [21:22] funny faces and whine at the sight of [21:24] all the spooky spiders movie Ron does a [21:26] lot of whining but book Ron agreed to go [21:29] in when Harry asked him follow the [21:35] spiders the dark forest [21:40] why spiders what can follow the [21:44] butterflies I don't like this something [21:51] wet touched Harry's hand and he jumped [21:53] backward crushing Ron's foot but it was [21:55] only fangs nose why'd you reckon Harry [21:57] said to Ron whose eyes he could just [21:59] make out reflecting the light from his [22:01] wand we've come this far said Ron but we [22:05] don't actually know what ron was doing [22:06] the whole time because harry isn't [22:08] keeping track of him and describing his [22:09] reactions then they made the scene of [22:11] the boys getting away from Aragog more [22:13] complex get fang harry yelled diving [22:16] into the front seat ron sees the bore [22:18] hound around the middle and through him [22:20] yelping into the back of the car the [22:22] doors slammed shut [22:23] Ron didn't touch the accelerator but the [22:25] car didn't need him the engine roared [22:27] and they were off hitting more spiders [22:29] in the movie the scene is turned into a [22:31] full car chase the car is not driving [22:33] itself so Ron stops the car before they [22:34] get out of the Forbidden Forest and says [22:38] club traveler only to get chomped on by [22:42] a chill practical effect that just wants [22:44] a hug and then Harry has to save them [22:46] then Ron keeps freezing and failing to [22:48] drive the car the car fails him and [22:50] Harry has to help and protagonist it up [22:52] this version has more tension in his [22:54] thrilling and spooky but it makes Ron [22:56] look a little foolish and as a result of [22:58] this Harry our main character looks [23:00] braver and more heroic in comparison [23:05] before getting into the biggest example [23:07] of a Ron change that flares up anger in [23:10] people please allow me to obsess over an [23:12] obscure example that I've never seen [23:14] anyone get mad about but it kind of [23:16] bothered me and it's sort of funny in [23:18] the third book there's this hilarious [23:19] moment where Ron calls Harry Harry's [23:22] Uncle Vernon picks up the phone and Ron [23:24] is screaming at the top of his lungs [23:26] into the phone asking to talk to Harry [23:28] ron has never used a telephone before [23:30] and he doesn't know how they work it's [23:32] an endearing in character example of [23:35] Ron's ignorance of the muggle world [23:36] would you like to see a dumb version of [23:39] that [23:43] in the hopping pop babbity rabbity in [23:45] the cackling stump i was here ever see [23:52] what okay assuming runs family had a [23:57] different copy of the book with no runes [23:58] on the cover because if they did Wow Ron [24:01] you study ancient runes at your school [24:03] for wizard craft and witchery the book [24:05] is called Tales of Beedle the bard [24:07] Beedle the bard was a wizard author I [24:09] have a copy of the tales of Beedle the [24:11] bard this book and all five of the [24:13] stories in it couldn't be sold to a [24:15] muggle population in this universe [24:17] because every story exposes the [24:19] existence of the magical world the [24:21] wizard in the hopping pot is a story [24:23] about a cruel son compelled to help [24:24] muggles by his late father's enchanted [24:27] cooking pot in babbity rabbity in the [24:28] cackling stump a clever witch tricks a [24:31] king in his brigade of witch hunters to [24:33] stop hunting witches when she fakes her [24:35] death and makes them think that she has [24:36] cursed them from beyond the grave rod [24:38] knows his best friends were raised by [24:40] muggles [24:41] he knows Harry's aunt and uncle abused [24:43] him and wouldn't be reading him bedtime [24:45] stories anyway why does he think they [24:47] would know this book why his his IQ hit [24:50] the floor like a sack of bricks well [24:52] it's because it's a funny joke and even [24:55] if it's not a joke that would make sense [24:56] for his character it might slip by most [24:59] people and if they notice they can just [25:01] write it off as a lapse in judgment [25:03] because after all Ron's not the smartest [25:05] guy is he let's move on to the scene [25:12] [Music] [25:15] we'll start with Ron getting squinched [25:17] when they make their escape and end up [25:19] in the wilderness I actually love this I [25:31] think it's sad I feel the urgency it [25:33] makes me uncomfortable I think all three [25:35] of them did a great job but Harry Potter [25:37] and the Deathly Hallows Part one is a [25:39] pg-13 movie so there isn't a lot of [25:41] blood the injury isn't the nicest thing [25:43] to look at but it's not the same thing [25:45] as finding Ron unconscious soaked in his [25:46] own blood [25:47] the text describes that a chunk of his [25:49] arm is just missing as if cut off by a [25:51] knife harry has learned about squinching [25:53] but he can only think of it as something [25:55] comical the reality [25:56] extremely grisly the Disney is all [25:59] Hermione dares to do to heal Ron she's [26:01] afraid that if she starts casting spells [26:03] she might kill him The effect of dittany [26:05] and what it does is not explained to the [26:07] movies audience dittany accelerates the [26:10] time on the wound it makes it several [26:12] days older and that's all when I read [26:14] Deathly Hallows I feel stressed about [26:16] the fact that Ron never really recovered [26:18] from his injuries here he seems sore and [26:20] demoralized but I think that if you'd [26:22] only seen the movies you wouldn't [26:24] understand what if any limitations there [26:26] were to how much Harry and Hermione [26:27] could heal Ron the urgency of Ron's [26:30] healing is heavily tied to the food [26:32] issue Ron can't be healed by magic and [26:34] he's not getting enough proper nutrition [26:36] to heal naturally the trio is stealing [26:38] eggs and bread from farmers they're [26:40] foraging for mushrooms Harry caught the [26:42] world's most pathetic fish apparently [26:43] any food they get their hands on they [26:45] have Hermione duplicate to make more but [26:47] that lowers the quality of the food in [26:49] terms of taste and nutrition for the [26:50] sake of having more of it to fill their [26:52] stomachs they live like this for a [26:54] couple of months so Ron is festering [26:56] right mentally and physically and maybe [26:59] he could handle it until it's his turn [27:01] to wear the Horcrux and that's when [27:03] things get bad a detail left out of the [27:05] movies argument is that they learn ginny [27:07] neville and luna have been sent into the [27:10] Forbidden Forest with Hagrid this is [27:11] meant as a punishment but Harry is [27:13] relieved he can't think of the Forbidden [27:15] Forest as dangerous because he's locked [27:17] out so many times this is some of the [27:19] stuff that Harry is saying while ron is [27:21] silently listening in and Snape must [27:23] have thought that was a punishment said [27:25] Harry but Ginny Neville and Luna [27:27] probably had a good laugh with Hagrid [27:29] the Forbidden Forest [27:30] they faced plenty worse in the Forbidden [27:33] Forest big deal so the original fight [27:35] starts off almost word-for-word the same [27:37] but then Harry has an I'm sorry thrown [27:40] in I'm sorry [27:42] then the word mummy is switched to mum [27:44] dulling the humiliating sting of this [27:47] comment so you'd be right with your mum [27:48] by Christmas I just thought after all [27:51] this time we would have actually [27:52] achieved something [27:53] Ron's line we thought you knew what you [27:55] were doing as in he and Hermione turns [27:57] into I thought you knew what you were [27:59] doing I thought you knew what you were [28:01] doing I thought Dumbledore would have [28:02] told you something worthwhile after [28:04] Ron's awful comment Harry tries to [28:06] tackle him and then he tells him to [28:08] leave which seems like a [28:10] natural conclusion to this conversation [28:11] because it's already escalated to [28:13] violence book Harry tells Ron to go home [28:15] three times during this argument and [28:17] then there's the line that I keep [28:19] mocking you think I don't know how this [28:21] fail you don't know how it feels your [28:23] parents are dead you have no family it's [28:27] alright for you too isn't it with your [28:29] parents safely out of the way my parents [28:31] are dead Harry bellowed and mine could [28:33] be going the same way yelled Ron [28:35] insensitive but not mocking him for [28:38] being an orphan also the line you have [28:40] no family makes it seem like Ron doesn't [28:42] think of Harry as his family and I [28:44] honestly don't think that's true I think [28:46] both Harry and Ron feel that Harry is an [28:49] unofficial member of his family and that [28:51] betrayal of his expectations for Harry [28:53] is part of what's fueling his anger [28:54] right now [28:55] I think book Ron is offended because [28:57] he's starting to feel alone in his [28:58] paranoia and worried for the well-being [29:00] of his family he thinks he's seeing a [29:02] division in the priorities between [29:04] himself and Harry it looks like movie [29:05] ron has already come to the conclusion [29:07] that harry is not his family without the [29:09] whole element of him being insensitive [29:11] to Ginny being in danger and that just [29:14] kind of bums me out then there is the [29:15] romantic jealousy [29:16] I can understand reading this why Ron [29:18] feels like Harry has without any plans [29:21] brought Hermione who he loves into a [29:23] very dangerous situation but because the [29:26] movie has all of these scenes of Ron [29:27] getting jealous of them being in [29:29] proximity to each other or just getting [29:31] along despite the high stress levels of [29:33] the situation that makes me think that [29:35] if Hermione was just giving this Ron [29:37] kisses that would fix everything [29:38] that's probably why years later people [29:40] meme on this part of the movie they're [29:42] watching this thinking that he looks [29:43] like a guy who's having no fun on this [29:45] camping trip there's something really [29:47] ironic to me about Ron a character who's [29:50] supposed to be overcoming these feelings [29:52] of inadequacy because he's overshadowed [29:54] in life by his exceptional brothers and [29:56] by his exceptional friends being [29:58] overshadowed by the movies writing [30:02] anyway I'd like to announce my patreon [30:04] which brings me to my second [30:06] announcement a special thanks to Jake [30:08] Colburn my first patron who found my [30:10] patreon before I announced it I made my [30:12] patreon when the website announced that [30:14] if you wanted to get in on the whole [30:15] founders fee rate you had to make an [30:17] account that day [30:18] so I was like oh I might need that [30:20] someday I guess I should make one so [30:22] then my first patron showed up and it [30:23] was sort of like being attacked by a [30:25] ninja but instead of hitting you the [30:26] ninja wanted to be supportive have you [30:28] guys ever gotten attacked by money [30:29] ninjas if you joined my patreon as a [30:31] reward you'll get behind-the-scenes [30:33] stuff you'll find out what I'm working [30:34] on before anyone else I upload videos of [30:37] me playing video games unscripted just [30:39] like you know chill bonus content [30:40] basically I tried to think of the kind [30:42] of stuff I would want from video si si [30:44] like I have a Twitter Tumblr and [30:46] Instagram linked below and that's it [30:49] do you canoe
