## Summary

In this video, Sadhguru explains the significance of Mahashivratri, a festival rooted in lunar calendar and natural forces. He discusses how the alignment of the sun, moon, and earth affects human physiology, and emphasizes the importance of staying awake and upright during this night to harness the rising energies. He also touches on the role of AI and the shift towards experiential spirituality.

### Key Points

- **Birth, Life, and Death Determined by Us** [00:01] — Sadhguru states that our birth, life, and death are determined by us, and that we are sitting here only because our mothers' bodies were in sync with the cycles of the moon.
- **Mahashivratri and Rising Forces** [00:53] — Mahashivratri is the day when the ocean is trying to rise, and similarly, fluids in our bodies rise due to gravitational forces. Observing these days can reveal certain things happening within us.
- **Celestial Dynamics and Their Impact** [02:01] — The earth is spinning and round, generating dynamic forces. The moon and sun also impact us. Our birth, life, and death are rooted in these forces, so we cannot ignore the moon's influence.
- **Lunar Solar Calendar** [02:45] — A calendar is not just for counting days but a way to structure life. The Indian calendar indicates moon phases, and festivals are based on these days to align with natural forces.
- **What Happens on Shivratri** [03:43] — Due to the moon's position, natural forces rise. Scientists may dismiss it, but the ocean rises on full moon and new moon days. Since our body is over 72% water, our fluids also rise.
- **Mahashivratri Timing** [04:44] — Mahashivratri is the first Shivratri after Makar Sankranti, falling between February and March. This year it's on February 15th, but it varies due to the lunar calendar.
- **Maximum Rise and Posture** [05:24] — Mahashivratri is the day of maximum rise. When things are rising within you, lying down misses the opportunity. Sitting up with a straight spine supports the natural upsurge.
- **Tradition of Keeping Awake** [06:08] — In Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, people used to throw pebbles on tile roofs to wake sleeping people, as keeping them awake was considered a great service. Now, Mahashivratri is an effort to keep millions awake.
- **Subjective Experience** [07:27] — Each individual has body, mind, emotion, and life energies in different combinations. For some, staying awake is an achievement; for others, it's natural. The experience is subjective.
- **Take One Step** [09:05] — The key is to take at least one step towards improvement. We don't define how a person should grow, just as we don't tell a coconut tree to be like a mango tree.
- **AI and Experiential Shift** [10:08] — In the digital and AI age, people want to experience, not just listen. Mahashivratri is a complete experiential and transformative experience, not just a concert.
- **Machines Freeing Humans** [11:19] — Machines have taken away physical work, giving us time for mental and spiritual pursuits. However, some become lazy and sick, leading to more hospitals than educational institutions.
- **AI and Intellectual Coolies** [13:11] — AI will make intellectual coolies feel stupid because a phone carries a million books. Information is no longer a differentiator; now is the greatest time to turn spiritual and evolve consciousness.
- **Growth of Mahashivratri** [14:33] — The first Mahashivratri was in 1993 with 1,400-1,500 people. In 1994, it was here with 70 people. Now, 140 million people participate worldwide. This is the power of Shiva, meaning consciousness.
- **Sanatan and Living Tradition** [16:12] — Sanatan is not run by a book but by living people, adjusting to the times. There is Shruti (absolute) and Smriti (memory). This is the science of well-being.

### Conclusion

Mahashivratri is a day to align with natural forces by staying awake and upright, and it has grown into a global celebration. In the age of AI, the opportunity for spiritual evolution is greater than ever, as information becomes commoditized and experience becomes paramount.

## Transcript

very birth, life and death is determined by us. but I will say it. We are sitting here right now only because our
So mahashiatri is that day when whole ocean is trying to rise. water in the ocean is rising, the fluids in your body are not rising. Is it
Mashuratri night? They're keeping up the tradition. They play cards. They get drunk. They do all these things. If you observe on these days certain things are happening within you. It is related to the forces which our birth is rooted,
our life is rooted, our death will be rooted in us. So probably the modern They want to experience. >> Now is the greatest time for human beings to evolve their consciousness into a tremendous possibility. You are
missing the opportunity. You are also missing the opportunity. So from that 70 people today it's grown to a place where 140 million people are participating around the world. This is not wow for me. This is the power of
not wow for me. This is the power of Shiva. You mentioned Mahashiv for my curiosity.
>> Mhm. >> are by observation what is happening on that day and what is the best way to benefit from those forces. it's a flat? >> It's spinning.
>> It's spinning and round, right? So it is spinning and round. dynamics are happening. Anything that's moving is dynamic. >> Dynamic forces are being generated all the time. And there is also another
object spinning around us which is the moon. And there is this guy the big guy who's burning us down. [laughter] All these three have impacts on us. >> Our very birth, life and death is determined by us.
>> We are sitting here right now only because our mother's bodies were in sync with the cycles of the moon. Isn't it? >> So how come you can ignore the moon and simply conduct your life? That's why we created a looney solar calendar.
>> How the influence of the sun and the influence of the moon what it does to your body to be conscious about it. So a calendar for us is not just about counting days. Calendar is a way to structure our life. So mah shivatri
>> sharatri means that one day before amawasha that is the day when there is no moon. uh because today living in cities where electric lights are there all the time and people are uh they're looking at
your channel maybe [laughter] they don't know when is parami when is amawasha what day but just look at the Indian calorie it's telling you what day the moon >> and the sun all right they're not
telling you 1 2 3 4 5 which is just numbers numericals >> has no relationship so this has relationship ship most of our festival festivals are calendar based on that day what's happening accordingly there is a
culture as to what to do on that day so what is happening on shivatri is the because of the uh position of the moon around the earth in a certain way there are natural forces rising of course there are scientists who say oh rubbish
this is all mumbo jumbo he's trying to talk but go near the ocean and see on the full moon and new moon day whole Ocean is trying to rise. Ocean is trying to rise. >> Your body is over 72% water. If the
water in the ocean is rising, the fluids in your body are not rising. Is it? What to? Because it's not written in the textbook that you read. That's your idea of science. >> You have no observation of life. If you
observe and these days certain things are happening within you. So there are 12 to 13 shivaratri in a day in a year I'm sorry >> but this is mahashvaratri this is something that comes after the
makar sranti is over the first shivatri that comes after that or in that region in this month that comes is mahashvaratri this time it's on February 15th next time it could be in the first week of March it ranges between February
and March >> because it's a lunar calendar imagined >> it is related to the forces which are rooted in which our birth is rooted our
life is rooted our death will be rooted in that whether we understand or not >> so on that day there is a natural upsurge of everything when the ocean is rising all the fluids everywhere must be rising isn't it
>> right right indeed >> so Mahashivatri is that day when the maximum rise is happening >> so when Things are rising within you. erect. >> They're all trying to go this way.
Forces you lie down. You are missing the opportunity. You are also missing the opportunity >> by not supporting the natural. this way, if you are this way, >> yes,
messing with it. >> So we said you must sit up. They said one of the you know in in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh this habit is there at that time all the homes were you know tile roofed homes. So one of the things
supposed to do is they walk around the town carrying pebbles in their hand and throw it on people's uh you know the roof the tile roof tall tall tall it will make noise >> because if you wake up sleeping people
you will be benefited because you're benefiting their life. It's a great service you can do that you keep them up in the night otherwise the fools will in the night otherwise the fools will sleep. So every children and youth used
all concrete roof you throw stones nobody will know unless you break the glass [laughter] unfortunately the situations have changed so we don't have to do the same things but the mahashiatri here is an
effort to keep millions of people awake in the night last year over 140 million people participating from across the world but particularly in the country so
we want to see the whole country stays awake and keeps their spine erect. What will they do on masharatri night? They will many people keeping up the tradition they play cards they get drunk they do all these things
>> instead of that be in a place where you are anyway drunk without alcohol [laughter] >> full of music dance meditation and everything happening. >> So this is the idea because all most of
our festivals are calendar based not imagination. Right. So Sgu, you have explained very well what happens in in terms of planets body terms of planets body that example of waves. Uh experience
wise I mean what I'm trying to understand is subjective. >> Each individual can make their own thing
because you have four aspects to you. You have a body, you have a mind, you have an emotion and you have the life energies in each human being. This is of a different combination. Same four things.
>> In one person the body is dominant, another person mind is dominant, another person emotion is dominant, another person energy is dominant. Based on these things, things will happen. If only body is dominant, you desperately
want to sleep. It will be an achievement. I did not sleep one whole night. It's a big achievement for somebody who all body. >> Someone who's got a little more mind, not sleeping is a very natural thing. If
he has something interesting to to do, he won't sleep. exuberant, >> he is flying away. [laughter] All right? So, it's like this. For somebody who emotional, there is
devotion which keeps them. So it's subjective to each person. >> Mhm. >> This is the beauty of this that we don't define it. This is what must happen. The thing is wherever you are, you must
The thing is wherever you are, you must at least take one step. >> Little better step. >> You must improve little bit. >> How doesn't matter. We won't define that. I never want to define how a
person should grow because it's wrong to tell a coconut tree to be like a mango tree or tell a mango tree grow as tall as a coconut tree. Coconuts can fall
down from that height and still be okay. Mango falls from that height, nothing will be left. All [laughter] right? Everything has been engineered well in this creation. So you don't tell how it should grow.
You never define how it should grow. You nourish you nourish a life so that it >> Right. Right. >> But it must grow. Indeed. [laughter]
So there are lot of uh surveys wherein this is mentioned that concerts are going to be the future but you started it long back. Not just a concert of course it's a complete experiential and transformative experience. Uh but I
think lot of people now in this AI age and digital age are moving towards experiential things. So probably the modern generation just does not want to listen. They want to experience. See uh whatever you calling it as uh
digital age or AI age whatever essentially what it means is there was a muscle. >> Mhm. >> Now you see if you have to carry this whatever these things 100 people have to
it will carry. >> Something has to be dug, the machine will do it. You don't have to stand there with a crowbar and do it. Are you glad or no? >> It's good for for the humans. Yeah.
>> Most comfortable time. >> A whole lot of things that we should have done physically 100 years ago. We don't have to do anything. morning, you had to walk down to the stream, catch it, and bring it. Today
most young men are not fit to carry two buckets of water one mile and come at one time all men and women were doing that. >> So physical thing have been taken away which has allowed us so much time for
mental things and spiritual things or whatever each human being may be using it in their own way. A whole lot of people may be becoming lazy and becoming stupid enough to work against their own life becoming sick when they are very
>> that we need more hospitals than educational institutions. It's beginning educational institutions. It's beginning to happen you know so that's one fallout but best things have happened to us because machines are doing physical work
>> if machines also do the mental job [cough] which I've always been saying this is intellectual coolies you read one stupid book I know this is not a good thing to say
but I will say it I don't say good things only let everybody know things only let everybody know >> [laughter] how do you know so much sguru whatever they ask you saying I say I don't know
nothing >> because see if you have to lie you have to know lot of things lot of intelligence also you need [laughter] if you have to tell the truth what you see you say
integrity >> no talent is needed no intelligence is >> no talent is needed no intelligence is needed isn't it to tell the truth so the truth of life is this If the intellectual coolies are doing so much
things, what are they doing? You read three books, you become a school teacher people. >> You read 10 books, you become a professor and bore the hell out of people. You read just one book, you
become an agent of God. Only one book, right? >> I read nothing. People accuse me that I'm a mystic. [laughter]
So one thing the machine learning and AI will do is suddenly intellectual coolies >> carrying 10 books in their head. They were acting like they are on top of the world. Now they'll feel stupid because my phone carries a million books.
>> Right? Anything that you want information it carries. So all the intellectual coolies see if you had big muscle at one time lot of >> they would make you the king >> right
>> today if you have a lot of muscle will say okay go and watch the gate >> that also machine will do now better than you >> so if you have lot of information in your head
>> it'll be no use because machines will have more information than you have more information than you >> so now is the greatest Time for human beings to turn spiritual, for human beings to evolve their consciousness
beings to evolve their consciousness into a tremendous possibility. huge. It's one of the world's largest spiritual gathering or a celebration or
an experience. I know it's not just a spiritual gathering. It's more than that. uh any memorable uh transformations or experiences you have seen which very close to your heart uh in the people
>> to the people or the event >> to the people. Oh for the people >> or event of course >> event has grown. First mahri we did in 1993 >> was a little
it was in kamur city not here 20 33 years ago in 93 we did a first massive ratri because I wanted to create something at that time >> so I went into weeks silence >> silence and almost unmoving. Uh-huh.
>> Just sitting in one place for nearly a week. So when I came out that day was Mashivatri. So we assembled in a you know chow tree a wedding chow tree kind of place maybe 1 400 500 people. That was the first
one. >> 94 it was here where we just had one hut >> 94 it was here where we just had one hut at that time. Just one hutch hut. We had 70 people for Mahashatri. So from that 70 people today it's grown
to a place where 140 million people are participating >> around the world. This is not wow for me. [laughter] This is the power of Shiva. >> Shiva means consciousness.
>> This is the power of that >> and everything that you call as the civilization essentially is moving towards that. It might have gotten distorted distorted in thousand different ways. That's a different
matter that happens in time. So this is why in this culture there were you know the the what you call as this sanatan was not run by a
book but by run by living people >> delivering it as it is relevant for that generation for the times in which they exist because a book you cannot amend once you say God wrote this you cannot
amend the book not a constitution where a man wrote it and you can amend the book book God wrote the book you cannot amend so we never created such books. We have many books. We never said this is absolute.
>> right? >> Constantly adjusting to the times. >> So there's one reality which needs to adjust. There is another reality which is absolute. >> So we recognize this as shruty and
>> Smriti is something that we learn from memory. That means from our parents, from our grandparents, from generations of people what they did, we don't have to reinvent the wheel. We learn from them. This is memories. Muti means
memory. >> Shri is the tune. This is not set by us. This is set by the creation itself. >> So that you cannot change. >> So sanatan involves these two things. This the science of well-being
that's what it is. So has wellbeing come if it did not come why would they come like this in these numbers in in hundreds of cities they're gathering in every home they're watching in the television why because it makes a
in the television why because it makes a difference isn't
