[0:00] Today we'll look how to compress video [0:01] files. This can be a very important step [0:03] when uploading your video to a social [0:05] media platform with a file size limit. [0:07] The tool we'll use is called Handbreak. [0:09] I'm here on the website. It's [0:10] Handbreak.fr. I'll leave a link in the [0:12] description below. It's a free and open [0:14] source tool with a great reputation. And [0:16] best of all, it's available on all major [0:18] platforms, Windows, Mac, and Linux. I'm [0:20] on Windows, so let's install it for [0:22] that. Here, I'll click download [0:23] Handbreak 1.92 installer, and I'll click [0:26] on the file name here. I'll save it to [0:27] my computer. Now to install it, I'll [0:30] just double click on the executable [0:31] here. I'll give it permission to install [0:33] and I'll click finish. Now to run [0:35] Handbreak, I'll just click the icon [0:37] here. And you can see on Windows I get [0:39] this message about installing thenet [0:40] runtime. So I'll press a button that [0:42] says download it now. And what I found [0:44] is that you have to install the version [0:45] 8 runtime of.net even if you have a [0:48] later version. So I'm going to download [0:49] this installer. I can see it's from [0:50] microsoft.com. I'll press save and let's [0:53] install the net 8. I'll press install. [0:57] And when it's all done, I'll press [0:58] close. Now, if I go back to Handbreak [1:00] and run it, it actually starts. So, [1:03] let's open up the file we want to [1:04] convert. We can open up a batch of files [1:06] here, but I just want to do one. I could [1:08] drag it onto this middle area, but I'll [1:09] just click open video files here, and [1:11] I'll go to my temp folder. Now, I have [1:13] this movie file here that I want to [1:14] compress, and it's actually 1.39 GB. So, [1:17] let's see how small we can get this. [1:19] I'll press open. [1:21] And now, we have the different settings [1:22] we can use to compress it. Now, the good [1:24] news is we can pretty much just use the [1:26] default settings. The main preset here [1:28] is fast 1080p 30, but you can choose [1:30] other ones if you want, but I'm just [1:32] going to leave it like that. You can see [1:33] the format will be MP4. I'm going to [1:35] click web optimized. That means the MP4 [1:37] file can be streamed immediately when [1:39] someone views it on the web. There's [1:41] other options here on the tabs you can [1:42] choose to adjust if you like. Under [1:44] video for frame rate, I just like to [1:46] choose the top option, same as source, [1:48] but you can make it lower if you want. [1:50] Let's go back to the summary. Down here [1:51] under save as, we can choose the [1:53] destination. Let me click browse. I'll [1:55] put it in the same folder here. I'll [1:57] call it astronauts compressed. [1:59] I'll press save. One cool feature is [2:01] that you can choose what Handbreak will [2:02] do after it's finished running. You can [2:04] make it close itself or even log off [2:06] your computer, but I'm just going to [2:07] have it do nothing. And now I'm going to [2:08] press start encode. So it's going to [2:11] start compressing our file. You can see [2:13] the elapse time down here. And now we [2:16] have our compressed file output here. [2:17] And you can see it's only 25.9 [2:19] megabytes. And when we run it, the [2:22] quality looks great. [2:24] This would be perfect for posting [2:25] online. So check out this tool at [2:27] handbreak.fr.
