[00:02] demon pops up, I must give my hottest take on. I've been waiting for this moment. Kaigaku is very misunderstood. And is he
[00:14] Kaigaku is very misunderstood. And is he still a jerk? Yes. Is he someone who I still a jerk? Yes. Is he someone who I hate? Yes. But I think that people are just super unwilling to look beneath the surface, but I think he was written in
[00:28] that way. So, let me explain. I think Kaigaku represents what most people would end up doing because his entire story is about survival and his focus on
[00:40] survival becomes so important to him that he is willing to put others at risk in order to survive and then that turns into a disdain for people who don't recognize him
[00:55] by himself, right? Kaigaku is incredibly selfish. He's incredibly self-centered. However, we very specifically as an audience don't know his backstory. All we know is
[01:08] that he is an orphan, right? He is at Gyomei's orphanage. So, personally, I think Gotouge purposefully didn't show us everything because they don't want us
[01:20] us everything because they don't want us to feel empathy. An An author can't tell us how to feel. They can't put in their book right here, feel this way towards this character. They can only guide us in the way they want us to feel based
[01:35] off of how they write the story. And in a story where so many of the characters, especially the demons, have these kind of big moments where we feel for them because we've seen that they have this messed up past, we don't see that with
[01:49] Kaigaku. We only see him through the eyes of two people that he hurt, which is Sanemi and Gyomei. So, we don't get to hear from him and what his story [music] is. Zenitsu gets very close to the point he's talks about
[02:04] Kaigaku's box of happiness always having a hole, and that [music] is likely because of the childhood that he had. He suffered, and it is very clearly,
[02:17] in my opinion, shown that [music] he was likely being kind of singled out at the orphanage, and he was being accused of stealing money. We don't know
[02:29] if he actually did it. That's what led him to running away that night, and that's what led him to being okay with letting the demon come back and kill everyone. Is that correct? No, that's obviously the wrong thing to do, but
[02:42] [music] if we had the context of his story, I think most of us would view him incredibly different, and this is the hill I will die on. He is written in a way where he is supposed to be a jerk, and we are supposed to hate him,
[02:55] more context, I don't think we would feel the same way.
