[00:11] probably well aware at this point that the manual sports car, particularly in species. More and more brands are turning their backs on the three-pedal layout. The Corvette, for example, is currently an only two pedal affair for [00:24] the foreseeable future. And if you move in the exotic car space, you have to be for three pedals. However, there is a high-end sports car manufacturer that still believes in that level of connection. Whether you hate them or [00:38] this video is going to be a celebration of that. Be driving both their more affordable entry in that space, the Carrera T and the manual GT3. We'll be We'll be setting lap times in both cars. So, if [music] you love the manual [00:52] gearbox, you like Porsches, or you just like seeing two idiots drive a car on a racetrack, you will probably really enjoy this video. [02:28] It's cool. [music] [02:59] quick lap times. In fact, you broke the manual record for a track twice in a row with two different Porsches. You first went out in the Carrera T while it was went out in the Carrera T while it was cooler out and you ran a 132 96 or [03:12] somewhere around that that point which made it the fastest manual car you'd ever driven. Faster than a Darkhorse. And then literally 30 minutes later, >> smoke that one. >> Yeah. You ran a 125. Was it 95? 95, [03:26] >> which is not only a second and change faster than when you first ran a 992.1 faster than when you first ran a 992.1 GT3 with a PDK under much, much cooler conditions, it's also faster than the Z06 by over a second. Again, and this [03:39] was not the fastest version of a current generation GT3 you can buy. Did not have carbon ceramics, did not have weak package. It was a manual. And uh isn't sticks? >> Yeah, it was really cool. I think uh it [03:53] was in also another thing to flex on the the GT3 was that it's half within half a >> Yes. >> With a manual transmission. So, >> Yeah. True. Yeah. Way better. >> GTD had way better conditions. And this [04:06] is within half a second. The current generation GT3 with less power than it used to make. Just some gearing changes, arrow and suspension tuning changes is a >> Yes. >> Versus the Carrera T. Not that this is a [04:18] compete in any way. The way you're faster is you're faster everywhere. like two, sorry, seven and nine miles an hour. You're seven to nine miles an hour faster in every single corner. So, yes, the GT3 is faster. But dynamically, [04:33] drive? What are they like balance-wise? How do they feel? >> Um, I think the GT3 is is obviously more refined and sharper on the nose, whereas talk about is just track. So, [laughter] yeah. So, the Carrera T um going into [04:48] the test I didn't I didn't even know it was a strut front suspension. After driving both and they told me it totally made sense because there is just overall basic on the Carrera T more traditional. >> The way the car feels though, I think [05:01] would tend to agree with me it communicates to you very very well. If >> Yep. I think I mean they're both both those cars you can react to slides and normal 911. That's nothing different. But again, the GT3 just cranks up the [05:17] speed um and the capability a little bit further. Uh I like both for different reasons. You know, they're both good for the track. Um one is more budget friendly, the other one is more like if you really wanted Right. And [laughter] [05:30] know anything about these cars is because I'm simply not in the market for bracket. >> I just want to drive them fast. So these. And >> my question for you, and this is sort of [05:42] everyone's like, "Oh, manuals are slower on track." Do you really feel like the all? >> No. Cuz it No. So, there's there are a paddle shift, you have the luxury of kind of dropping that last downshift on [05:56] corner entry to help the balance of the car on corner entry. Whereas in a done in a straight line before you turn in. Um, the big catch though is a manual fun. >> Yeah. More fun. More fun. [06:10] >> Well, with that, you're gonna watch two very untalented people drive these cars around Ottabon South. >> Oh, you guys are tough on yourselves. >> And that brings us to the sponsor of this video, Open Track. Open Track is a [06:25] track [music] day insurance company, and they are exactly what they sound like. may not realize your personal insurance policy that you have in your car to you in the case of an accident. And they're called accidents for a reason. [06:38] Yes, plenty of us think we are amazing drivers. And sadly, not all accidents on issue. You can have a mechanical failure. You can hit oil on the track. You get hit by another driver. And [music] sadly, your current policy will [06:53] not cover you. That's where Open Track comes in. Open Track is a track day insurance company. [music] You can set your policy limits, your deductible are looking for. Do you want a per event? Do you want a per weekend or an [07:05] annual policy so that you're planning to drive on a racetrack and you want to keep yourself financially covered? Please take a look at Open Track. [07:18] >> Thank you for [music] calling Open Track. How can we make your day amazing? segment, I'm going to do my best to walk you through briefly what both of these [07:32] Let's start with the Carrera T, the more affordable of the two. The car starts, let's call it mid low 100s, well equipped, 150, 160, 170 depending on how cheap. They are well aware of that. And this is the same formula that has [07:47] existed since the 991.2 generation. They take the base engine, they throw enthusiast bits at it, they give you an optional manual gearbox, or in this case, manual only, which is a great thing. The engine makes 388. It does 0 [07:59] to 60 in just over 4 seconds, though honestly probably less than that in the honestly probably less than that in the real world. And it has the old gearbox, the seven-speed with seventh gear deleted. So now it is a six-speed. It [08:11] You get a mechanical limited slip differential in the back and rear steer as standard. And the suspension tuning and brakes off of the Carrera S with some nicities on the inside that are Carrer only like the wood shift knob. [08:24] perspective, it is strut front like all the regular 911 nonGT cars are. And it has a electronic brake booster versus a vacuum assisted brake system like you wire versus a more traditional hydraulic system, which means brake feel isn't [08:40] motorsports products. What about the GT3? This is the 992.2 generation. It starts in the 200s and realistically it's high 200s to over 300 depending on [08:52] how you option this car. It is a evolution of the prior car honestly carrying over most of it. The suspension tuning gets updated now has the geometry of the old GT3 RS in the front for less dive and squat. It has the suspension [09:07] tuning and software off the 911 ST. Obviously, it still has rear steer and the car to change the balance of the vehicle to make it honestly just better that performs very very shortly. They've also changed the gear ratio in the back [09:22] to make it a little bit shorter and more aggressive so the gears don't have to be thing out. Also, it improves the car on the racetrack when it comes to about the 4 L flat 6 in this case is it's largely a carryover with some [09:35] internal changes from the GT3 RS and also changes to the emission system. compliant. Porsche is trying to keep this naturally aspirated flat 6 alive. This 4 L flat 6 still makes 52 horsepower. However, due to the [09:50] torque. They've lost about 10 footbs. You're looking at like 330ish, which not that noticeable. However, it does sound different than it used to. It's vacuum assisted brakes. You can get optional carbon ceramic brakes as well, [10:06] get the optional Y-sock package, which adds a bunch of carbon fiber light into the car, which this car does not have. Despite the fun livery, this is still a Despite the fun livery, this is still a relatively base model GT3. So, with [10:19] that, we're going to go set some laptops. [music] [10:35] It's called rowing some gears, Mark. That means that we're in the Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. [screaming] Hey, [laughter] Tony. [10:48] horsepower, Mark. Some amount of torque, but most importantly, I have to do things while I'm driving. Look at this big brake zone. >> Heel toe, Mark. I have to downshift. And this Carrera T [11:03] was the lap record holder for manual cars around Autobond South for about 30 minutes till the GT3 went out. But, you know, I love this car. I drove its know, I love this car. I drove its launch program on the street in the [11:17] area around the Porsche headquarters in Atlanta. You drove this car. I know this is just the base Carrera team. Walk me through how this car drives, Tony. >> What do you like? >> I like that you can you have to figure [11:32] >> Like, it doesn't do everything for you. You have to manage some under steer, then you have to manage some over steer. It's it's very engaging car to drive and It's it's very engaging car to drive and learn with it. It's to me the limits are [11:45] learn with it. It's to me the limits are low enough where you don't feel like you have to drive it so hard to enjoy it, right? Like it's not as precise as like a GT3. It's just fun. And the fact that you have the manual gearbox like this, [11:58] right? Like you overcook the corner. It's correctable. It's easy to work with. It's easy to learn on. It's super super fun in that regard. And it's not I mean it's slow compared to a GT3, but this was basically fractions of a second [12:13] slower than a C8Z51, which was run on a much stickier tire than this car has because that tire is a bridge stone. A bridge stone. >> Oh yeah. Oh, [laughter] the seat's definitely uh [12:25] of alignment, bro. >> Oh jeez. Let me fix that in the straight >> I'm going to have to see my doctor after this visit. >> Oh, Mark, you ready? You ready? You ready, dude? Oh. [12:37] >> Jesus. >> Um, the one thing I will talk about though before we get into the GT3, a complaint you had about all 911s in the past, which >> pro or con pro in that you have to do [12:49] more communicating with your car, but the front of this vehicle because it's >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Doesn't work anywhere as well as a GT3 Mark. But with that, it's called vehicle and driver management. Jack, you have to [13:02] understand that you can't just ram rod the front end in this car. Otherwise, Oh, Tony. Oh, I'm going to lose my smackful. [13:23] You're driving with too much gusto, sir. Too much too much gusto. I can't stop myself from breaking and turning and GT3 next revision manual gearbox. [13:38] How does she feel? This is the business. Mark, if you if you've never been in a GT Porsche before, manual or [13:50] PDK, it's like that Danny Deino meme. I get it now cuz this car is [laughter] get it now cuz this car is [laughter] Oh, no. I can't drift like you, Tony. I can't drift like you. But you know what? car is the business, sir. Dude, [14:05] it's so businessy. You know, the funny part about this thing is when you get out of the other car specifically, uh, you realize that the limitation isn't the machine here. It's just you. >> You know, you look at yourself in the [14:20] mirror after your third divorce. You're like, dude, maybe I'm the problem. this. It's like, >> no, this is uh this is a driving tool. This is a very fast driving tool. this whole argument that manuals are slow. [14:35] Dude, this car is over a second faster now as a 2 versus both the old 992.1 [music] GT3 and the current generation C8 Z06. You got to mention Corvettes, >> Oh, of course. And this is only4 of a [14:50] >> Oh, of course. And this is only4 of a second off a brand new GTD in better conditions. This thing is so fast. And why do you drive cars other than he's freaking out? Um, it's because you [15:05] feel something. And you feel everything in this car. [laughter] Like everything. As I as I fear for my death holding on to the roof. I wish this thing had the buckets. Good lord. Yeah. I I know. Every time we drive [15:17] this, it's it's the same story. Like it's the best driver's car, modern driver's car, and you add the manual and it's like, dude, >> The chassis communicates. You know [15:30] exactly where you are. Over steer, under steer. The double wishbone turns in. The rear steer helps it turn in at stability at high speeds. And the manual gearbox with the the revisions to gearing to make it shorter gears [15:46] [singing and music] the torque deficiencies with the modern emissions compliance the 4 ler has to have. It's basically a perfect car other than the >> I'm sorry >> dude. This is revenge for 5 years of [16:00] >> Yeah, I know. I'm trying to make it easy on you pal. You know you made me lose my swag ball. [laughter] [16:15] >> I can't get in a second. I want >> Is there anything else you want to do, dude? Yeah, I want to hit 9,000 RPM. All right, do it, Tony. [music] [16:31] First off, huge thanks to our title sponsor, Bridgestone. Without them, So, if you're looking for track day tires of your very own, please take a look at the brand new RE71RZ. A very longlasting and frankly the [16:46] fastest 200 treadware or quickest 200 treadware tire currently sold. We ran these tires at One Lab of America. They lasted more than 4,000 mi of pure track abuse. If you have a regular tire need, please take a look at Bridgestone's [16:58] thanks to Autobon Country Club for giving us a home to shoot videos like school where you can become a better driver and learn from drivers like Britt Casey, attend their new GR Academy where you get to drive the GR car and learn [17:12] from professional coaches. Also, if you want to attend a track day or become a member or host a corporate event or rent the track, also hit them up for that. Now, what about the cars themselves? Well, very clearly Mark and I like [17:25] gearbox is a dying thing in this [music] space, at least the traditional manual gearbox. And the driving experiences are made more special by them. A lot of cars allow you to do this, including my beloved Corvettes. That said, you lose [17:40] street and on the track. And after all, these cars are toys. They aren't real race cars. Who cares what the ultimate lap time is? Cars are about driving experience, not a spec sheet or a generic lap time. It's about how you [17:54] engage yourself with the vehicle. That's what Porsche still has allowed you to do. I do think you're going to see a lot more automated manwells or manuals in the future like the new Ferrari Manuel, which is a Digi manual or what you've [18:07] seen in the Konazg. And as much as I like that and sadly think that's there's something a lot less honest about that. And to be like to genuinely live with an experience. In regards to the cars [18:21] themselves, both the Carrera T and the GT3 are excellent driving cars at the two price points they exist at. There's sadly nothing else really like them disappointing. The con of both of these cars is, as much as I love the GT3 and [18:34] the Carrera T is the price point now. They have ballooned so much in the last couple years. The 992.1 when we first reviewed it was like $160ome thousand well equipped sub200. That same car today is like 260 270 and you know fully [18:50] loaded they're over $300,000. The Carrera T was like 1301 140 well equipped one is 170. I've seen some listed for 180 and at that price point you're asking a lot and you've effectively priced out so many people [19:04] who actually want to buy these cars. The same job 5 years ago is not making 40% more money than they are you know today. that becomes a problem. I think Cayman comes back, it has a manual gearbox at a more affordable price point [19:20] for let's call it more regular people. But with that, thanks for watching. Hope But with that, thanks for watching. Hope to see you again soon. [music] [singing]
