[00:00] Here's 100 details you missed in the final trailer for Vision Quest. Welcome back to New Rock Stars, I'm Eric Boss, and this is a breakdown of the final trailer for Marvel's Vision Quest. It's been a while since I've been this excited for a Marvel TV show, for how it plans to complete the WandaVision trilogy with witchcraft, [00:14] mutant hotcakes on AI, and narrative threads that connect all the dots in the MCU that have led up to it. And still, I really only have the vaguest sense of what this show will be. It's all going to start with a two-episode premiere on October 14th. [00:26] New Rockstars is going to be covering this series with aftershows and next day easter egg breakdowns. We've got some great preview content to catch you up, starting with a complete breakdown of all nine episodes of WandaVisions coming to the channel this Sunday. [00:38] And the best way to support New Rockstars is to grab one of our VisionQuest-inspired designs on our merch store, NerdRide.shop. Like this Vision shirt for our Wanda's fast food design. Both are available at NerdRide.shop. And we love it when our supporters wear our gear out in the world, post selfies, and tag us. [00:52] Like this awesome person rocking our Rio Lady Death design. Vision Quest will tell the story of Vision after leaving the Westview Hex and WandaVision with the new downloaded memories from HexVision in that Sympathesia scene. He has now apparently relocated to Edinburgh to the bar that Vision and Wanda frequented during their years on the run during the Vicious Infinity War. [01:10] And after some scuffle, he's going to retreat inside his own digital mind where he houses the other incarnations of Tony Stark's past AI creations, including Jarvis, Edith, Friday, Gummy, you, and Ultron. All while in the real world, Vision's son Tommy, now living in a real human body thanks to Agatha and Billy's seance in Agatha All Along, [01:28] is trying to reconnect with his last living parent. Also, Vision's being hunted by Paladin. And Tommy's going to be connected with Lisa Molomari, who has a really cool jacket. I mean, we've seen so many promo bits the past week that have just been vibes and flashes of other characters and details [01:40] and just stuff that's going to exist within or tie in somehow. That just seems pretty impossible to jigsaw a symbol into any linear or sequential narrative context. So we're really getting no further idea of what the hell is happening on this show, and I'm here for it. [01:52] I don't need to know exactly what the A to B story will be. I just want to know what the vibes and the themes of the show will be. This trailer opens in this healthcare-looking facility where the wall has a sign that reads, St. Minden is a village in England, not far between Edinburgh and Tottenham, where we think Tommy Shepard was arrested. [02:09] Now that we're in this lobby, the other wall has this quote. The height of your dreams is determined by the depth of your imagination. Vision checks in with reception and says, I'm here for the draft. which seems to really slow down time from his point of view as all the staff just opens fire on him. [02:23] A talk show actually showed an extended version of the scene. Take a look. Everything looks remarkably normal. Let me talk to the boss. But you're clocking these words and being consistent, right? No, Edith. Right now, fashion can be further from my mind. [02:35] Well, someone's speaking from you, right? I suggest you take a closer look. So we see that he's being guided by Emily Hamster playing Edith. Edith was the AI in the glasses that Tony Stark left behind for Peter Parker [02:47] in his will in Spider-Man Far From Home. Actually, there's also a BTS clip from the show where there's a scene where Edith directly references Peter Parker. I'm having a profoundly difficult time navigating teenagers. Tell me that. [02:59] My first boss was a junior in high school. So Edith is in Vision's mind here, telling him to track the wardrobe changes of everyone around him. And I love how for her, her perception kind of comes from an old-school viewfinder toy where the slides pop up from a poster with Vision on it. [03:13] Looking through lenses like this is really the best way that Edith can operate. At first I wondered if this was a kind of simulation in Vision's mind, but later in the trailer it looks like it's a real-world location where Vision might be rescuing his son Tommy. So from this clip I'm guessing that he knows it's a trap laid by Paladin, [03:27] who's hunting him down and using Tommy as bait. The music in this trailer is The Animal's House of the Rising Sun from 1964. It's one of the greatest songs ever. It started as an American folk song with really unknown origins, based on various ballads that were sang all over the American South. [03:41] It's also just the perfect song for this trailer and series. It's about characters all contained in this house and the Rising Sun wordplay of the son, Tommy, rising from obscurity. The lyrics of the song tell the story of a house called the Rising Sun in New Orleans, [03:53] which could refer to a brothel or a gambling den or even a prison, with a warning to the listener to avoid the same destructive path that this house brought him. We see a version of Vision when he was mid-transformation from the projection of his flesh skin and his synthezoid body underneath, [04:06] and zoom into his mental network. This house of the Rising Sun in this show is a mansion that's one half white with Victorian architecture features, with the back house red brick, which I think is meant to represent the ship Ephesians of Vision's very body itself. [04:19] In the August trailer, we saw Ultron steering a big ship steering wheel in his attic. I think they're going to lean into that. And this shot at 44 seconds in makes the back house look like it's gliding forward like a ship. The front door of this house has a window above it that's the same shape as a viewing [04:32] deck opening by Ultron's attic in the back of the house, that's the same shape as the oar pin on Vision's forehead from the area where Thanos ripped out the Mind Stone from his previous form. We see this cool statue of Vision battling with Ultron that seems to be reenacting their fight from Avengers Age of Ultron. [04:46] Remember that movie's closing credits included this very, very cool statue of all the characters fighting together, but I feel like this could have been a part of. Vision watches his past MCU moments in a cinema that's part of this house. The moment he plunges his fingers into Ultron's head in the Age of Ultron final battle, [05:01] and sharing an intimate moment with Wanda and Edinburgh in Infinity War. I broke down some of the nuances of this cinema in our last trailer breakdown, But I really really love how vision is watching past in few moments the same way that Loki would watch a projector of his past [05:13] life from the infinity saga in the first episode of the Loki series in the TVA Ultron says you a ghost hunting their footsteps that dead witch really did a number on you Careful how you talk about Wanda on this show Ultron TV Jeez my mom name out your freaking mouth Here in Ultron [05:28] attic room, we see even more of his paintings. On one of the TV screens on his walls, the screen on the upper right, it seems to be always set on a painting program. Ultron's painting hobby seems to be a big part of his business this season. His character [05:40] poster showed him with the palette in his hand and various paintings around him. I think there could be some interesting commentary on this show of can AI actually create art? Like, what happens when AI tries to create art? It's probably going to be stuck in some uncanny valley. [05:53] When we punch in on Ultron here, the city backdrop behind him, on closer inspection, it seems to incorporate buildings from several cities. I see the Chrysler building from New York City, the Gherkin from London. So, is this another painting from Ultron that he can only use residual architecture to build [06:07] because he's AI? Could this be kind of like the way Hannibal Lecter sketched parts of Florence from memory to line the walls of his prison cell in The Silence of the Lambs? Yeah, let's go with that. We see Ultron trying on a Russian or maybe a Sokovian hat, [06:19] with his android form reflected back to him in the mirror. I love this shot. Kind of like vampires, there's always something screwy about the reflection of an AI. I actually think he might be wearing a different hat every time we see him in this trailer. He's kind of like Kevin Feige. [06:32] And what is the ultimate AI that we've seen in the MCU? Kevin the Robot on the Disney lot. Vision in many of these scenes wears a pinstripe suit. In another video, with the help of some amazing coding experts on our subreddit, we were able to translate the code hidden in the pinstripes of his vest, [06:45] repeated on his coat, to be specific quantum computer code, with terms like eigenvalues, as well as Planck's constant, sense of self, consciousness, and hexadecimal code that translates to who am I or what am I. [06:57] Sarah Young, the show's costume designer who designed this, actually responded to our video and confirmed these as things that she actually hand-fixed into the pinstripe. Since we're talking about Planck's constant and eigenvalues, I've been pretty excited to learn that apparently, [07:09] through Orla Brady's Friday character on the series, we are going to revisit Tony Stark's death scene from Avengers Endgame from her point of view, as Friday was there for it. [07:21] Friday? Nice function for anything. And with that in mind, as I recently broke down Avengers Endgame, Friday was also there when Tony Stark used things like Planck's constant eigenvalues [07:34] to figure out time travel using an inverted Mobius strip and accounting for spectral decomposition and the eigenvalues in his algorithm. So she may be pretty useful for Vision to do a different kind of time travel using just quantum code. [07:46] As Ultron says he's living literally rent-free in Vision's head, the sky outside the window looks a specific shade of reddish-orange with different architecture that I'm trying to make sense of. It's the same color of the sky as what's outside the front door of Vision [07:58] in his classic look later on in the trailer in this shot. This shot of James Darcy as Edwin Jarvis, the humanized form of the original Jarvis AI that Vision came from. It's amazing that they got the actor who played the butler Jarvis from Agent Carter and from that scene in 1970 in Avengers Endgame [08:13] to play the AI form of the mouse. In the side of him, we see this framed print of Rene Magritte's 1964 The Son of Man, but instead of the green apple floating in front of the man's face, it's a huge orange really taking the place of his head. [08:25] Now, some people see this painting as an early example of intentional uncanny valley, because Magritte painted the man's eyes to be peeking out from just behind the apple, and one of his arms seems to bend backwards at the elbow. But Magritte said of this famous painting, [08:37] Everything we see hides another thing. We always want to see what is hidden by what we see. There is an interest in that which is hidden and which the visible does not show us. This interest can take the form of a quite interesting feeling, a sort of conflict, one might say, [08:50] between the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present. I like to think that this might be a painting that's done by Ultron, who, as an AI, would just kind of hallucinate the famous painting as an orange instead of an apple. Obviously, there's some references to the idiom of comparing apples to oranges, [09:02] but I'm sure we'll come up in the tea. Then there's this colorful shot of Jarvis and Friday, it looks like, turning a bunch of knobs and dials as the whole house seems to be going haywire. Again, does this not look like the command bridge of a ship or a submarine? Yes, house equals ship of theseus, I'm convinced of it. [09:15] This long table and the way its diagonal angle intersects with the angle of the chandelier above is just sending me. But on this table is a blueprint map with lots of figurines on it. What are these things? Are they soldiers? Are they avengers? [09:27] Are these the same statues that seem to be lining the exterior location where June's life soared and the other Marvel heroes in the June 3 footage? If you've thought about therapy but haven't given it a try, it might be worth another look. I've been partnering with our sponsor, BetterHelp, for four years, and they've made a big change. [09:41] For eligible members, insurance options may now be available with an average copay of just $23 per session. There once was a point in my life when I felt like therapy would be helpful, but I couldn't afford it. I had just finished school, moved to a new city, and I was navigating being an adult. [09:55] I was overwhelmed, and I didn't have a great set of coping mechanisms in place to help me process how I was feeling in a productive way. BetterHelp's new insurance options would have been so helpful to me back then, and I hope they're helpful for you now. Therapy gives you a safe place to check in, take stock, and deal with things head on so they don't pile up. [10:10] BetterHelp makes starting therapy easy. Some armed security guards look and fly walk out of this fancy estate I was wondering if this could be the Hatfield House in Hepfordshire with its Renaissance statue in front of it that we spotted in the August trailer as the location on this show [10:51] We do see Vision running down an interior corridor that also might be inside the Hatfield House later on in the trailer. But here in this doc, we do see some white paint unfinished on these columns, but I think it could just be the back part of Vision's mansion [11:03] as it's gradually turning from the white Victorian architecture overtaking the red brick. I think I got these two guys' guns on the far side. Are those silencers? And if these two are the salad forks, the meat portion forks on the inside of it both also have matching guns. [11:16] There's just a neat order symmetry to all of this that makes me think this is some type of artificial digital security inside of Vision's mind, like the agents in the Matrix. We see Ruri Malika as Tommy pleading to law enforcement that he has a family. Vision and Ultron watch footage of this, and in the August trailer, the CCCD footage has the watermark of Tottenham Police Station Psych Eval Prisoner Shepard Thomas. [11:36] Thomas Shepard was the boy who was being bullied and nearly drowned when Billy and Agatha's seance, and Agatha all along transported the detached soul of Tommy Maxima from Wanda's hex magic into this nearly dead kid. Like his brother Billy, he would have woken up in the body of another kid, but with his memories from Westview and Hex. [11:52] The last thing he would really remember probably is Wanda telling him this. Boy, thanks for choosing me to be your mom. Tottenham is in North London, so I guess Agatha and Billy transported that soul all the way from New Jersey to the UK. [12:06] We see Tommy on that prisoner transport bus. We think this is going to be where he meets Lauren Morais as Lisa Molinari, a coat of arms. There's a shot of what looks like the dark drones that were confiscated and repurposed by the DODC with their new evil Imperial probe droids, dark pink jobs, [12:21] as they hover over some fence into an area with a construction crane, but that's not made to black. I mean, the way the shot fades out is just going to weird me out. Like, did the trailer just want to show us this awkward shot of drones but give us no context of where they're going? Now Ultron demands freezing. [12:34] And save your time. And we see a big padlock unlatched. Based on how Ultron is dressed here, I think this could be part of this sequence from another promo earlier this week. Who's your other robot? How many fire icons? [12:46] Oh, four. Five. What? Yeah, it seems like Vision's house is a security feature to keep the AI locked in with a caption test. That's so funny. What's hilarious about this is it seems like both of them got it wrong. Maybe I'm an AI, but I'm only seeing three fire hydrants here. [12:59] There's a parking meter that kind of looks like a fire hydrant, but it's so funny to me that Vision, who is the more human of the two between Ultrons, thinks that there are four, and Ultrons, who's even further removed from any manatees, thinks that there are five. [13:11] It seems like the image of Griffith Observatory might have messed up both of them. That's the Los Angeles Observatory in Griffith Park, because that dome roof does seem to be slightly tinted red. We see a cargo plane flying to Majorport, returning to the MCU for the first time since the Falcon and the Winter Soldier. [13:24] I was thinking this might be where Vision finds Tommy, but no, it kind of looks like Vision just finds Tommy in the UK. So why are they going here? Is this going to be where Sharon Carter Power Broker finally returns to the MCU? It looks as though Vision will rescue Tommy from the restraints in this facility, [13:38] but I think it's part of that medical center that we saw him going into the trap in earlier. I think it's going to be here where Paladin blacks him while he's wearing this heavy coat and wipes away some of his flesh to reveal his projected sensivoid form underneath. So yes, I think this is actually the medical facility that Vision identified as a trap in the opening scene, [13:52] which was suggested is happening in the real world. We see a new shot of Tommy who wears a shirt that we know from other shots reads, Get the grip, don't believe the blip. I love this world of detail. There are apparently people in the MCU in 2028 or whenever this is set [14:05] who are conspiracy theorists who do not think the blip happened. I assume these would be people who actually dusted and then jumped ahead to the future and just thought they blinked or blacked out and thought it was all a mass hallucination and then just started to turn on the survivors of the dusting, [14:17] thinking that they're just liars who got ugly overnight and took their homes and trashed the planet. Hey, Tommy Maximoff was a product of Wanda's Hex. The Hex all started in Westview a month after the blip ended. He grew up in a world where no blip happened. Also, I don't know if this is his shirt and something that he truly believes, [14:31] or something he got from like a thrift store, you know, like Todd Flanders' Butthole Surfer shirt. We've got new clothes in the donation bin. I'm a surfer! We see this painting of a man on fire, which flashes to a dude on fire in the library of the mansion [14:44] as Vision looks down on him from above. This is Jim Hammond, the original synthetic human torch from the golden age that we saw all the way back in the first Captain America film at the Expo in Queens. I love this Easter egg. [14:56] I also saw this painting of the combustible synthozoid at D23. On this show, he's going to be known as Jim, J-I-M. And promotional art for the series reveals his schematics and what Jim stands for, Joule Individual Machine, Joule being a unit of energy. [15:09] Actually, a vertical promo last week includes this newspaper with some cute headlines. This is referring to Phineas Thomas Horton, creator of Jim Hammond, a.k.a. Jim. [15:22] I think they're saying that Jim went rogue and murdered his creator. He did so in a pretty grisly manner. Hey, doesn't this remind you of Ultron preying on his creator, Tony Stark? And then on the side, I love this. [15:34] Hey, adamantium, where the fuck it goes? I'm pretty sure it says adamantium there. Now, after Captain America Breaking World established that T-Mut was made out of adamantium, producer Nate Moore at the time said that that was meant to be the birthplace of adamantium in Earth-616. [15:48] It sounds like you just meant that metaphorically in terms of film release order, because if Sadie thinks Jean Grey existed in the history of Earth-616, I'm assuming that Marvel Studios also intends that to be the case for Wolverine whenever we meet him. [16:00] and for that to be true, there must be adamantium in this history. So I choosing to see this headline as a reference to another hero who would have been around in this 1940s golden age history of the MCU having horrible things done to him with adamantium by the weapons plus program as they try to recreate the successful super soldier program of Captain America Dear Brad Winterbaum please use Vision [16:18] Quest to bring back that nameless metal claw spice and bar brawl easter egg from She-Hulk and make it make sense. We see Vision under assault in the Edinburgh bar where he works so I'm thinking Paladins Group or some other bounty hunters will find him there and he's gonna have to retreat into [16:30] storage pantry and then just go into this meditative trance. Then there's a shot of an EMP stockway blasting through a parking lot as all the lights go out. And we hear Ultron saying, now I'm going to fix you, as we see two gloved hands reassembling Vision's broken lens from the [16:44] sword lab in Florida, where Wanda found him in pieces in WandaVision Episode 8, and said that she couldn't feel him. So what Vision now might be having memories of when Tyler Hayward's group reassembled him into this weapon he was intended to be. Ultron promises to finish what he started [16:56] all those years ago, as we see a flashback of him hovering over the Sokovian city in Age of Ultron. I like that they're not even hiding Ultron's evil nature and what he's going to try to do is go rogue and break out. This room where Vision says, Ultron, stop! is the same area where Vision and Tommy are fighting Jocasta. [17:10] More on her in a bit. We see Lisa Molinari in this airplane hair. As these really cool-looking robotic arms extend from an apparatus on her back. This seems like the show's version of The Coach of Arms. In the comics, it's a kind of magical sorcery. Here, it's technology. [17:23] But also, this is a show where all technology is powered by sorcery. So we'll see what they do with it. Behind her is a chair and a crate with the same knightly chess piece logo. I don't know if that's just the logo of the company that gave her the coat of arms or some kind of connection to Paladin. We'll see. [17:36] Part of what Vision does is lock down the mansion and take part in some rituals. He pulls the firewall lever and has Edith sit in front of a TV while he goes into this trance and renovates as his eyes glow red. Why is Edith necessary for whatever this is? Remember, Edith allowed Peter Parker or whoever else wore these glasses [17:51] to throw perceptive access to secrets about people hidden behind privacy firewalls. firewalls. So I'm wondering if Edith will allow Vision to see into buried memories of the Scarlet Witch's hex. Memories buried in Vision's mind, but maybe not memories that he has immediate [18:04] cognitive access to. That's why I think Edith is seated cross-legged in front of the TV here, because so much of Wanda's projected hex came from her relationship with classic television programming. We see a dark shadowy figure staring down Vision and the other AI in front of the [18:16] house. We see the same figure standing on the other side of a tomb in a church and continues to Glitch? I am praying that this is just Billy finding a way to project his wicked self into Vision's mind to find his father and his brother. We see Tommy with [18:28] Vision in the swimming pool, hugging. I don't know the context here, but I am reminded of the fact that Tommy almost died here drowning. I think this is going to be a very emotional moment. We get a very clear shot of Vision's new form, looks so good, embracing the yellow, green, and red of his [18:40] colors in the comics as Ultron manifests behind him as they fight. Clearly, Ultron just wants to rip off this look because it looks so good. And then we see Jocasta's red eyes glowing from under a hood and then her true form. Actually, she gets a close-up where she holds back her hood [18:52] in a promo earlier this week, but since it's all part of this sort of nanotechnology of her body, it's just an unnecessary gesture that just looks cool. I mean, she looks incredible as a visual effect in a costume. Jocasta's played by Tania Miller on this show, [19:05] and she's known as Ultron's wife in the comics, but in Avengers Age of Ultron, one of Tony Stark's other AI drives in that same drawer where he retrieved Friday was labeled Jocasta. So my theory has been that Ultron is planning to print or produce Jocasta [19:17] as a vessel for him to escape Vision's mind. And I do think that we are seeing Jocasta in the outside world, because this promo also shows us our first look at Tommy's speedster powers to save someone from Jocasta. This woman, by the way, is Mary McDonald, [19:29] one of the biggest TV stars to be joining this cast. President Laura Roslin from Battlestar Galactica, playing a still-unknown role on this series. I don't know why Jocasta is lunging at her, or why Tommy feels the need to save her, but when he does, he moves her head out of the way of Jocasta's attack. [19:43] Mary McDonald also appears in another promo shot of Tommy emitting electricity from his hand. He does get tortured with electricity at some point in the trailer, and I don't know if he's going to end up, like, absorbing that electricity to be able to redeploy it. White Vision bites Jocasta as she fires this repulsor beam from her palm. [19:56] There are cases in the background that show either models or statues or holograms of the other robotic or armored forms, and there's a glitching screen showing Vision from some other moment. And then we end in the gnarliest shot, I think, of Vision's flesh form mixed with a synthezoid layer underneath. [20:09] Tagline of the series? Her Vision, His Quest. I love that tagline. Everything's so Wanda-coded. I mean, if she doesn't return in the series, why are we even here? As I pointed out in the first trailer, there was some blackening code on screen that said, [20:22] Vision Wanda 143 or Vision Wanda, I love you. So, Elizabeth Olsen, please make an appearance on this show. So, next week on Thursday, Marvel Studios will be hosting a television panel at New York Comic Con.
