[0:00] Hello friends. You wanted to go play [0:01] Dota, but what? You have to play off [0:04] lane now, but you're not an offlane [0:06] player. [0:08] What do we do? Don't worry. Whether you [0:10] are an experienced Dota player who needs [0:12] to brush up on how to play off lane or [0:13] you're a new player getting into the [0:15] role, we're going to cover all the [0:16] basics you need to not feed to be an [0:18] acceptable off laner, at least have some [0:20] impact every game. Down the line, we'll [0:22] do a more advanced guide to become like [0:23] a real off laner. But for now, let's [0:25] cover the basics. Keep in mind, you [0:26] don't have to become an actual offlane [0:28] player. theoretically the the best for [0:30] the given bracket. We just need to be [0:32] better than the other panicked roll Q [0:35] offlane players or support players. The [0:36] concepts the same. If you're doing a [0:38] different role than usual just to earn [0:40] the tokens, you just need to be in the [0:41] middle of the pack doing your best as [0:43] long as we are better than the other [0:45] clueless people who aren't bothering to [0:46] learn the new role and they're just [0:48] tanking the losses. You just need to win [0:50] some. 50% would be great, but if you're [0:53] like 30 to 40% win rate on an off [0:57] offlane role and then you earn your [0:59] tokens to go play your main role and I [1:01] assume have a positive win rate there, [1:03] it'll work out. You can climb. But of [1:05] course, the better you become an offlane [1:07] so that you can win more games, that'll [1:08] make the MMR games easier. And because [1:10] the off link got added as a high demand [1:12] role, that means in a lot of games, you [1:14] versus the enemy off laner. Sometimes [1:16] you're going to play versus actual off [1:17] laners and they're going to be better [1:18] than us. But actually, there's a pretty [1:20] good chance you are just playing versus [1:22] someone else who also does not play that [1:24] role. They're just having to do it [1:25] because no one is playing the role. [1:27] That's why it's high demand. So, we just [1:28] need to be better than them. And we are [1:31] going to have our team is going to have [1:32] the better off laner. It's us. First, [1:34] we'll need to decide on a hero pool. And [1:36] you want to hit a couple of things here. [1:38] First, pick a simple game plan. You want [1:40] to do you don't want have to do anything [1:41] complex. As you get further into the [1:43] role, you can do all that stuff later. [1:45] For now, just something easy so you [1:46] don't have to think that hard on it. And [1:48] then you want a hero who can be useful [1:50] ahead or behind. If you're watching this [1:52] video, you're getting into the offlane [1:54] role. You're not that good at it. So, [1:55] we're actually likely to lose a lot of [1:57] our lanes to start. Now, if you win, [1:59] fantastic. Then, you know, do whatever [2:02] you're doing as a winning hero. But [2:04] realistically, as we start off on the [2:06] back foot because we're bad at off lane, [2:08] we need to still be useful. Certain [2:10] heroes are better at that than others. [2:12] Some people have to win their lane or [2:14] they're useless. I don't want to play [2:16] those heroes even though they might be [2:17] strong laners. Uh so you could do it if [2:19] you really want to, but my advice be [2:21] useful whether you are ahead or behind. [2:23] With that said, I don't actually want to [2:25] lose all my lanes. So pick strong laners [2:29] rather than weak laners just to make it [2:30] easier on yourself. But if you do lose [2:33] the lane, people who can jungle early to [2:36] recover are very nice. With this in [2:38] mind, there's a certain type of offlaner [2:40] that is best to start with in my [2:42] opinion, and that is going to be [2:44] initiators and or aura builders. They [2:47] usually they frequently overlap, not [2:49] always. If you pick one or both of [2:52] these, you're going to be in a good [2:53] spot. If you need a new off laner to [2:54] learn, these are my go-to [2:56] recommendations. They all are fairly [2:58] tanky in the lane. You know, starting at [3:00] the beginning, we got Centaur and Axe. [3:02] Very high strength, some of the highest [3:03] in the game, and then some of the [3:05] highest HP regen in the game. So even as [3:07] you get harassed, you'll just heal up [3:09] naturally. You've got the retaliate [3:11] build on centaur and then spin on axe. [3:14] So in the lane, the first few levels can [3:16] be a little awkward, but once you get [3:18] past that, you walk into the creep wave, [3:20] you farm it. You walk into the jungle [3:22] camps, you farm it. The enemies hit you [3:24] and you don't know how to harass, they [3:25] take some damage back, right? So it's [3:27] it's not that hard to do. And you just [3:29] focused on last hitting as you are new [3:31] and then eventually hitting your item [3:33] timings later. you will then be a fairly [3:35] low cooldown playmaker with like blink [3:37] hoof stomp or blink call and that is [3:39] useful no matter what every single game. [3:42] Tide hunter and underlord they're more [3:44] aura builders but also very tanky in the [3:47] lane. Tide hunter has the anchor smash [3:49] to reduce enemy damage when he hits them [3:51] with it and then he has kraken shell for [3:53] guaranteed damage block whereas [3:55] underlord has the atrophy aura which [3:57] reduces enemies attack damage so he just [4:00] takes less damage when they hit him. [4:03] Then in fights, uh, Tide Hunter, you [4:05] know, the big AoE ravage, build auras. [4:06] Underlord, build auras. Fiends gate in. [4:09] That part's a little bit more complex, [4:10] but you can also just be with your team. [4:12] Uh, fiends gate people into you. And [4:14] then just, okay, giant AoE pit, giant [4:17] AoE firestorm, press my auras, I'm [4:20] contributing. It's very straightforward. [4:22] The last three are more honorable [4:24] mentions. Uh, I don't like them as much, [4:26] but I still think they're fairly [4:27] straightforward. Dragonite has high [4:29] armor and HP regen in the lane, so it's [4:32] hard to bully him out. You can get a [4:34] blink so you can initiate for your team. [4:35] You push towers with your ultimate. Then [4:38] you kind of scale for damage, which is [4:40] why I'm like, you know, not as uh not as [4:44] good of an offlane pick for keeping [4:46] things simple, but uh at least the lane [4:48] I think is straightforward. Abdon kind [4:51] of similar cuz his main build right now [4:52] is to go for radiance, but throughout [4:54] the game you're just hard to kill. [4:56] Aphotic shield is a great utility uh [4:59] spell for your team because it's a [5:00] strong dispel and then you can kind of [5:03] build some auras, but you also kind of [5:05] build for damage. And then that's also [5:07] true for Viper where you crush certain [5:10] people in the lane and you often build [5:14] towards being very tanky but also kind [5:17] of doing damage, which is fine. I'm [5:19] giving you guys the options. But the [5:21] downside of these types of heroes, [5:22] especially Abdon and Viper, if you don't [5:26] do well in the lane, you can fall off [5:28] pretty hard because uh these three [5:30] heroes do not have farming mechanics as [5:33] easy as these four heroes. Uh Viper has [5:36] like a Nether toxin build that kind of [5:38] bumps him up there. So, he's a little [5:39] safer and I did want to give a ranged [5:41] off laner. Uh, so you guys have options. [5:43] But he is meant to win the lane. And if [5:45] you don't win the lane cuz your like [5:47] mechanics are a little iffy, then I feel [5:49] like these three can be a little shaky. [5:52] For the other positions who need to [5:53] learn some off lane, a different [5:55] approach you can take is to just play a [5:57] hero you already play as a carry, as a [5:59] support. And hey, they can work as a mid [6:01] laner. So then you just do that. And [6:03] you're already comfortable with the [6:04] hero. You might be doing a new build. [6:06] you're going to be higher level and more [6:07] money, especially for like supports than [6:09] maybe you're used to, but you kind of [6:11] already know like roughly your matchups [6:13] and how your abilities work. So, you [6:14] make it a little easier for yourself and [6:15] now you just have to play in a new lane [6:18] and a new role. Uh, but then that's [6:20] easier than just like completely brand [6:21] new stuff. The downside is there's only [6:24] so many heroes that overlap multiple [6:27] roles, like truly overlap multiple [6:29] roles. So, I tried to put those heroes [6:31] closer to the front here. So, for [6:33] example, you see like if you happen to [6:34] play any of these guys as carries, [6:36] they're like actual offlaners. Same down [6:39] here. Like you can run these as actual [6:41] offlanes. [6:43] The further you go, I admit especially [6:45] the experienced Dota players, you're [6:46] probably like, "Zack, that one seems [6:47] kind of griefy." And I, you know, kind [6:50] of agree. But if, for example, a carry [6:53] player is like stuck in the off lane, [6:54] it's like, "Look, I can play D or I can [6:56] play Wind Ranger. God, please pick Wind [6:58] Ranger off lane over Draw, dude. Don't [7:01] no D off lane. Please Win Ranger, right? [7:04] That's what that tier of off laners are [7:06] like. It's like the real C to D to lower [7:08] tier heroes, but they aren't the [7:10] absolute garbage worst pick you could go [7:13] and you've seen it in your pubs. Like it [7:15] does happen. The reason they're a little [7:17] griefy is cuz many of them just build [7:19] towards damage. So like the Wind [7:20] Rangers, the Weavers, Terblade offline, [7:22] I know you could do like the pipe, but [7:23] then it's like it's into damage, you [7:25] know? So like, oh damage, you know? So [7:28] it is a little but it works. And if [7:31] you're a more experienced Dota player, [7:33] you can kind of understand certain [7:34] matchups when these heroes would be [7:35] better uh and then go towards it. I [7:38] think a newer player, you know, you [7:39] wouldn't really know why this is kind of [7:40] griefy or when it's good. So then I [7:42] would wouldn't recommend it as much. Uh [7:44] but for the off lane, like I just need [7:47] to off lane and I'm just going to play [7:48] heroes that are good enough, then these [7:50] are some that I think are they're [7:52] acceptable. They're not the worst out [7:54] there. I know these three are actually [7:55] more offlaners than carries. This is for [7:58] people who want to try to pick up [8:00] semicaries. uh carry players [8:01] specifically and then you can play it in [8:03] off lane or in the safe lane depending [8:05] on the lineup. Especially when you have [8:06] like sniper mids, TA mids, things that [8:08] are actual carries and you don't need a [8:10] second carry. You actually need to bring [8:12] a bit more utility upfront value to your [8:14] team. Then you can learn one of these [8:16] guys and then flex that in between your [8:17] roles. I've got a cheat sheet for you to [8:19] help you understand what to prioritize [8:20] at different times of the game here. [8:22] Starting with the lane at 0 minutes, get [8:25] the lane to come back. back. I know this [8:27] sounds obvious, but as soon as the [8:28] bounty is grabbed, we're going to run to [8:30] the lane, and we're going to do a [8:31] variety of tricks to bring the lane [8:34] towards our offlane tower to make laning [8:36] safer for us, but it might also open up [8:39] some kill options on your opponents. I'm [8:41] going to talk through uh some examples [8:43] of this later, so we're just going to [8:44] brush over it for now. And uh more [8:46] details to come. 7 minutes, the wisdom [8:49] shrine activates. You have to make sure [8:51] your team gets at least one wisdom [8:54] shrine. If you lose both, the game is [8:56] very hard. If you can secure both, [8:57] great. But you're not usually involved [8:59] in stealing the enemy wisdom shrine, [9:01] unless you have like some global [9:02] ability. Most of the time, the off lane [9:04] is part of securing the wisdom shrine [9:06] that is right by the lane. You don't [9:08] strictly need to be the one to get it. [9:10] If your four supports headed over and [9:12] you can see the enemy heroes in the lane [9:14] still, you're fine. Just stay where you [9:15] are. But if you think the enemy is [9:17] invading, then you need to go get it. [9:19] And if the support is busy, you need to [9:21] make sure you head over to the wisdom [9:22] shrine to get it. Along that topic, when [9:25] the support is busy, because they're [9:26] going to go get the wisdom shrine, you [9:28] can't die. You just have to be patient. [9:30] You will lose a little bit in the lane, [9:31] but that's okay. That also applies when [9:33] the lane is coming towards you. If you [9:35] can count to five, you can figure out [9:38] which way the wave is going. I recommend [9:40] you practice this for yourself. So, come [9:42] over to play Dota. Don't actually play [9:43] Dota. Create a custom lobby. Come over [9:45] to these settings. Make sure we are [9:47] filling in the empty slots with bots. [9:49] Uh, make it all pick and then whichever [9:51] team you're going to be on, we'll do [9:52] radiant first. Give yourself passive [9:54] bots or new player bots. That'll [9:56] simulate your teammates. And on the [9:58] enemy side, give them whichever [10:00] difficulty you feel comfortable with. [10:02] But the higher you can go and manage, [10:04] the the more prepared you will be. We're [10:06] going to walk out to lane, and I'm just [10:07] going to give you a couple tips here [10:09] while we wait for the creeps. First, I [10:11] really recommend you buy a safety salve [10:13] just as a default. The Salve is very [10:15] forgiving. When you mess up, inevitably [10:17] playing a new role, new hero, the Salve [10:19] will heal you back up. You want to do a [10:21] little bit of backpack efficiency, go [10:22] for it. But the the Salve just as your [10:24] starting purchase off the bounty runes [10:27] will just cover your ass. And then as [10:29] you get more comfortable, then you can [10:30] start skipping it if you don't think you [10:31] need it. Uh at least until later when [10:33] you like end up do needing it. Bounty [10:35] runes, don't go crazy, guys. We're bad [10:38] at the off lane. Go there safely. So [10:41] take a very defensive posture. If your [10:42] team is with you for this rune, just do [10:44] it. You get one bounty rune, it's no [10:46] problem. If your team wants to be here, [10:48] that's fine. You can come over as well [10:49] and then TP to lane. If you don't want [10:51] to go and you just want to like do [10:52] something safe, also wouldn't mind. And [10:54] if you see enemy heroes and you're by [10:56] yourself, just give up on it. And if [10:58] they aren't there, then oh my god, get [11:00] out of here. I might die. Actually, I [11:02] think we're okay. We're pretty fast. So [11:04] we're going to come over here. And then [11:06] because I just walked a lane, you maybe [11:09] take this angle too if you need to. You [11:10] could also end up tping like if you went [11:12] bottom. I'll just t to show you. We'll [11:13] do a, you know, somewhere up front. [11:15] We're going to head to our creeps and [11:16] we're going to body block the first or [11:18] we're going to body block the back [11:20] three. This is a very safe trick to do [11:23] because you can just TP to your tower. [11:24] Like this is always doable if you're [11:26] being safe at the bounty runes. Now, I'm [11:28] not going to do too much here. I'm going [11:30] to turn on the XP range indicator. If [11:33] you come over to the settings, it's [11:34] under Dotal Labs interface persistent [11:37] range indicators. Alt rightclick your [11:38] XP. And I'm going to pretend I have a [11:40] useless support. So, because I have done [11:43] this trick, the first creep walked up [11:46] and started fighting the enemy four [11:48] creeps first. So, you can see as the [11:50] rest of the creeps get here, my creep is [11:53] already half dead. So, it's going to [11:56] quickly become four versus three. And [11:58] because I can count, I know four is more [12:01] than three. I could do extra tricks [12:04] here. And which doctor might try to [12:06] grief me, but I'm not going to right [12:08] now. I'm just going to show you that [12:09] this block alone is enough. Look, the [12:11] enemy is even doing some damage. This [12:12] actually going to happen. I'm going to [12:13] try to get No, I didn't get him killed. [12:15] Uh the enemy will do this kind of stuff [12:16] actually surprisingly a lot if you are [12:18] crusader and lower. The bots don't [12:20] usually go this aggressive. That was a [12:22] little weird. But you can see depending [12:24] on a little bit of a mistake, it is [12:25] shoved in the lane now. And look where [12:27] I'm laning. I am set for the rest of the [12:29] game actually because it's now up to [12:31] these guys to fix the lane. These creeps [12:34] that are just spawned at 1 minute, [12:36] they're walking into the lane. They're [12:38] supposed to meet the wave here. This [12:41] wave right here, they're supposed to [12:42] meet here. Any amount of delay from [12:46] these creeps that affect these creeps [12:49] bring the equilibrium from here to here. [12:53] Now, you don't need to fully understand [12:54] this. All you need to know is that once [12:57] you get a wave here, what will [12:58] frequently happen is it will keep doing [13:00] this. Even as you bring it under tower, [13:02] the wave will just keep bouncing back [13:05] and forth. This was maybe the most [13:07] dangerous. [13:09] This actually a strong combo right here. [13:11] And here is going to be the safest. So, [13:14] you just evaluate on the lane where can [13:16] you get last hits. And anytime you're [13:18] scared, just default to a safer tier. [13:21] So, right now, I'm I'm too scared. I'm [13:23] just going to be back here. my witch AFK [13:25] witch doctor feeding. Who knows, right? [13:27] I don't need to die for that deny. Look, [13:29] the creeps are coming in. I'm going to [13:31] start being pretty safe. I have the [13:32] tower behind me and I'm going to go for [13:34] last. So, I'm going to miss them cuz I'm [13:35] bad, but at least I can try to get some [13:37] and I can get the XP. And you can see [13:40] because this creep wave is interacting [13:41] with the next one. It has delayed them [13:43] and they're now meeting this creep wave [13:45] that was supposed to meet here, we're [13:47] now meeting here. And once again, pushed [13:49] up. It's going to push back down. My [13:52] creep wave shoves up. Where's the next [13:54] creep wave? This time, um, my tower did [13:57] a good amount of damage, but it still [13:59] delayed a little bit. Once again, three [14:02] creeps versus four creeps. I'm gonna [14:03] come. Look, they're being weird. I get [14:05] to last it, right? Sometimes, okay, [14:07] these bots are being wacky, but what [14:09] will happen more often in your pub [14:10] games, like someone will try to do a [14:12] pull and they'll leave. Maybe they [14:13] don't. They keep sitting here, then you [14:14] just see what I'm doing. I just keep [14:16] sitting in this area and pull them back. [14:19] Get my last hits. Uh-oh, the carry's [14:20] here. I'm scared. Hit your own creeps as [14:22] much you can. This is the extra tip. Hit [14:24] your own creeps to kill them off faster. [14:26] This one gets low, kill it. If you miss [14:28] a last hit, you actually shouldn't. You [14:30] should prioritize last hits. But if [14:32] you're scared, that's okay. Then just go [14:33] for N. Look at my feeding support. Let [14:35] him die. I don't care. The creep wave is [14:37] pushing in. I'm going to drag it here. [14:40] By the way, what will frequently happen [14:41] is that the melee creep that tanks the [14:43] tower first will die and then, okay, [14:45] well, in this case, it just went to [14:46] another melee creep. It often goes to [14:48] the range creep in the back. And so as [14:51] you drag the creep wave back, make sure [14:52] you kind of turn around in time to [14:54] attempt this creep. If you miss it, it's [14:56] not the end of the world. If you have a [14:58] ranged ability, you can use that to get [14:59] it. Um, but it's just a little bonus tip [15:01] to help you get CS under the tower. [15:03] Ranged creeps are often let the tower [15:05] hit it three times and then you hit it [15:07] once or you hit it once, the tower hits [15:09] twice, then you hit it once if you have [15:10] higher damage. For melee creeps, hit it [15:12] once if they're full health. Hit it [15:14] once, let the tower do all the shots, [15:16] and then you hit it again at the end. [15:17] That is a very rough guideline cuz it [15:20] does depend on your damage, what the [15:21] creep's focusing. Don't worry if you [15:22] miss last hits for now, guys. Just do [15:24] your best. We're all learning off lane. [15:25] Again, if you weren't playing off lane [15:27] before, let's say your team goes for an [15:28] aggressive play. I would generally [15:30] follow them. You end up here. So, we are [15:32] going to grab the rune and then we are [15:35] going to aggressively body block the [15:37] enemy's creep wave. If you're not sure [15:38] where they are, look at your own side. [15:40] It's going to be mirrored. So, they're [15:41] by this tower. It's going to be here. [15:43] The timing is about 13 to 15 seconds [15:45] where you need to be here. So, I'm just [15:47] going to stand here. And now I'm going [15:48] to head over and I'm just going to start [15:50] body blocking because they're supposed [15:52] to meet just outside the tower. Just a [15:55] little bit of body blocking on my part [15:57] means that my creep wave will now go [15:59] under the tower and I get scared so I'd [16:00] run away. You don't have to do the full [16:02] block. Like honestly, just blocking like [16:03] from here to here is likely to be [16:05] enough. Uh, this can be a little bit [16:07] dangerous. You see, I'm like passing [16:08] some enemy heroes. As you get better at [16:10] the game, you keep an eye on the map, [16:11] you see them showing other places, then [16:13] you will realize that this is actually [16:14] surprisingly safe. [16:16] because it went under tower. Look how [16:18] hard this pushed out compared to the [16:20] other trick we did where I let the one [16:21] creep go through and I mentioned if they [16:23] hit their own creeps, they could fix it. [16:25] There's actually nothing you can do to [16:26] fix this. Like once the tower starts [16:28] hitting creeps, you're cooked. You have [16:30] to they have to come out and body block [16:33] our creep wave and most pubs are simply [16:35] not going to do that. So right away on [16:37] the very first wave, the wave has shoved [16:39] in and now I'm laning here. Maybe it's a [16:41] little further up than I like. So I'm [16:42] just going to keep being safe and I'm [16:43] going to wait for it to come in. You [16:44] don't have to be this is overly passive, [16:46] but let's just say you're really scared [16:47] cuz this guy's gone. Then don't lose [16:49] your health for one creep. Just wait. [16:51] And now here it is. And even if I bring [16:54] this under tower, it will just do what [16:56] we talked about. It'll push out, push [16:58] back in. You come to the lane late. [17:00] We're not able to do the body blocking [17:02] trick. So the creeps are going to meet [17:03] normally. Actually, even if you block [17:05] the back three and let the first one go [17:07] through, you can still do this trick. So [17:08] because the creep wave meets here, we're [17:10] going to immediately draw aggro. And if [17:13] you can time it with the range creep [17:14] attacking like now it works out because [17:16] like you pull it back and then these [17:18] guys get aggroed by the range creep. [17:19] It's a little messy sometimes. Um but [17:22] you can attempt that. And then I hit [17:24] their creeps. I mean I should get this [17:25] lasted I guess because I aggroed my [17:28] creeps went under the tower right away. [17:30] And then here we are. And then I just [17:31] hit my own creeps. Maybe I don't get the [17:33] deny. No big deal. But I help kill the [17:36] creeps faster. And look at that. The [17:37] very first wave already up here again. [17:40] And it's going to do what? It's going to [17:42] push in. It's going to push back out. [17:43] Going to push in. Going to push back [17:45] out. I'm just in a good spot [17:47] immediately. Why not just block every [17:49] creep? There are reasons to do this, but [17:52] as a newer off laner, I don't recommend [17:54] this because it requires more [17:55] participation from you to get the lane [17:58] to actually come back. So, I do the body [17:59] block. Let's just stop there. And now it [18:01] meets. I can count. So, I know that this [18:04] is four creeps versus four creeps, which [18:07] means this is actually at equilibrium [18:10] even though it's a little further here. [18:12] And I did the air quotes cuz actually [18:14] it's going to push slightly this way [18:15] because my creeps are going to meet here [18:17] first. It's getting advanced. Don't [18:18] worry about that. So, this is like fake [18:21] equilibrium where for one wave it's a [18:23] little better than here. And if I did a [18:25] better block, you know, maybe it's like [18:26] here, whatever. From then on, it's going [18:30] to be moving this way and then sit here [18:33] again unless I do more work. And if I [18:37] can, then it's okay. And that's part of [18:39] the reason you would do this, cuz you [18:40] feel you can play the lane. But if we [18:43] are taking the safest default route and [18:46] my support, who knows what they're [18:47] doing? Oh, I swear they're going to be [18:49] smurfs on the enemy team and I'm I I'm [18:51] just going to get destroyed. then I [18:52] can't actively participate here and I [18:55] need to be running in the trees while [18:56] the other tricks I did the body block [18:58] here instant creep aggrager to get to go [19:00] into the tower blocking one creep [19:01] forward. All of those work themselves [19:04] out without me needing to do anything [19:06] else here. Once this happens, which can [19:08] happen like even if you were trying to [19:10] do the other stuff, sometimes it doesn't [19:11] pan out. What we're going to do is [19:12] instantly hit our own creeps as soon as [19:15] they drop below 50%. [19:17] And now look at that count. Four creeps [19:19] versus three creeps. Even if I don't do [19:21] much here, I'm not going to use too many [19:23] other tricks right now. I'm just going [19:24] to hit my own creeps as much as [19:26] possible. And if the enemies don't do [19:28] the same thing, look what's happening. [19:30] They should, you can see the creeps were [19:32] below 50, but they aren't hitting it. [19:35] And until you get to immortal, people [19:38] are not going to consistently hit their [19:39] own creeps even as they see you do it. [19:42] So from here, you just have better [19:44] equilibrium, right? We're still kind of [19:46] here for now. I'm still having to work [19:47] for it, you see? And that's why this [19:49] isn't as great. You see how close I am [19:51] to the enemy heroes frequently, but [19:52] we're getting there. I am pulling it [19:54] back over time. And again, you can do [19:57] more tricks. I'm just trying to show you [19:58] the basics right here why you have to be [20:00] involved in this. Okay. And now here I [20:02] am. It takes about 30 seconds to a [20:05] minute longer. And it could take a lot [20:06] longer depending what the enemy does. [20:08] The other tricks were pretty instant [20:10] that very quickly the lane came back out [20:12] to me and I was good to go. But let's [20:15] just mess things up. I start attacking [20:17] too much. I get involved in a fight, my [20:19] four support is terrible, and we start [20:21] shoving the lane. It might take a little [20:22] bit to do, [20:25] but at this point here, you can see we [20:27] have two range creeps and four creeps. [20:29] The lane is shoving. So, at this point, [20:32] just commit cuz it's actually really [20:34] hard to fix it with any of the tricks we [20:36] talked about. So, we're just going to [20:38] shove the lane. Don't use spells that [20:39] early. That was actually bad. Bad [20:41] example. You should use the spells to [20:42] secure the creeps, not to lower them. So [20:44] lower the creeps with auto attacks and [20:45] then use spells and then come do your [20:48] own pull. Shove the lane in. Look, they [20:50] have to deal with this. They can't stop [20:52] me. I was like, this the support's [20:54] supposed to do this. It doesn't matter, [20:55] guys. Someone's got to do it and we're [20:57] going to be self-sufficient. So once the [20:59] lane starts shoving in cuz the support [21:01] tried to grief you, just commit. Do your [21:03] own pull. Zach, it's blocked and the [21:05] support hasn't. So then buy your own [21:07] sentry and then shove it in and then do [21:09] your own pull. It's just how it's got to [21:12] be. if uh your rank is like a little [21:14] lower and people are doing this kind of [21:15] thing to you. Now, you'll notice because [21:17] I was doing the pull, this creep wave [21:18] walked into the tower, that's where you [21:20] mess up. You do not want to allow that [21:21] to happen. So, I did a pull. I can come [21:24] over, grab this creep wave, and if I'm [21:25] feeling strong, I just bring it over [21:27] here. This will get my creeps killed off [21:30] cuz they're finding the neutral camp. [21:31] And then these all die. Now, here you [21:33] may enter a weird spot where now their [21:34] camps fight the neutral camp. And this [21:36] is where things are a little bizarre. U [21:39] it can be okay. It's just, as you see, [21:41] very chaotic. Um, but it will still lead [21:44] to your equilibrium overall because now [21:47] we have these creeps. Then we can even [21:49] reconnect them into here. And then I [21:51] have the ability to count. And so now I [21:53] know the enemy has more creeps than I [21:56] do. I hit my own creeps a little bit. [21:58] And then here we are. You only do this [22:00] if you feel strong enough to fight over [22:03] this camp. This time we're going to [22:04] pretend we're a weak lane. So I did the [22:06] pull. The wave is coming in. And the [22:07] enemy carries going to be coming up. Oh, [22:09] I'm scared. So, I've run away. Now, the [22:11] downside of this is that I'm going to [22:12] give the enemy the creep camp. So, he's [22:14] going to get more gold. But, if I was [22:16] losing the lane the whole time, he's [22:18] getting a lot of money. I need to get [22:19] something. So, then we are giving him [22:21] short-term value for long-term [22:23] equilibrium for us. So, I bring the [22:24] creeps around like this. And then I [22:26] start laning. Now, for him, he was [22:28] killing my creeps. And so, you actually [22:30] see there's not a lot alive. They could [22:32] have done a better job. Let's say the [22:33] carry just focused on killing the [22:34] creeps. They then bring it in and now [22:36] they're kind of matching what we're [22:38] doing. Um, but a lot of carries will [22:39] also just bring it under the tower and [22:41] then their creeps will die. So depending [22:44] what they do, it may still work out in [22:47] their favor and we have to try again. [22:49] But if they mess up at all, we're back [22:51] in this situation where because I kept [22:53] the creep wave alive by running it in [22:55] circles, I'm laning here. You've seen [22:58] this. I won't repeat it too much, but [23:00] now we are happy again and they have to [23:02] go do a pull. And you have seen many [23:05] times where people try to do a small [23:06] pull and it it temporarily brings the [23:08] lane up and then it ends up under the [23:10] tower and then shoves back out. So once [23:12] you identify that, you know, ah, this is [23:14] where I have to be patient. I don't take [23:16] crazy risks cuz I know in 30 seconds the [23:18] lane's going to be right back here once [23:20] again. I'm going to be happy to last it [23:22] and do my best and so I don't have to do [23:24] anything insane. If you're strong [23:26] enough, sure, go for it. But you don't [23:28] have to. The last thing you can try is [23:30] to just constantly draw creep aggro. I [23:33] don't. This is the last thing you should [23:34] try because there is a much more refined [23:38] way to do this. It goes beyond the scope [23:40] of this guide. I have a creep aggro [23:41] guide kind of covers a bit of it. There [23:44] could actually be even more detail [23:45] beyond that. So, it's too much to talk [23:47] about in this one video, but essentially [23:52] if you draw no creep aggro and the enemy [23:55] is stronger than you, they can do all [23:57] the tricks I have told you as well. And [23:59] so they can keep the lane here forever [24:02] if it just is a standard lane. I'm too [24:04] scared to go in. I'm too scared to do [24:05] anything. So just start drawing aggro [24:08] nonstop even though you may not [24:10] understand what's happening. So first [24:12] the creeps walked back to me and you [24:14] saw, oh, it came closer to me than the [24:16] enemies. So then it was easier to get [24:18] elastited. You know, kind of like that. [24:20] You could try for denies like this if [24:22] you want, but one of two things is going [24:25] to happen is either the creeps are going [24:26] to split up like this, which makes [24:28] things easier on you, right? Rather than [24:30] all the creeps here and we're constantly [24:32] losing cuz the enemy is stronger than us [24:34] and I can't even approach this area. Now [24:36] it's split like this and it's up to the [24:37] enemy to be like, how do I how do I [24:39] manage both? Do I get this one and this [24:41] one? Like where do I stand? Right? We're [24:43] creating chaos as the off lane. And if [24:46] we're losing non-stop, then we want the [24:49] chaos. We want the wave to get split up. [24:51] We want builds to uh develop. So you see [24:54] now my creep wave is pushing because I [24:56] drew so much creep aggro. And I'm going [24:58] to keep doing it, right? Rather than [24:59] lane here, I'm laning a little further [25:01] back. Rather than lane here, I'm coming [25:03] back even a little further. You can do [25:05] more advanced stuff. I just don't want [25:06] to talk about it right now. Like I said, [25:07] trying to keep it simple. We may miss [25:09] some creeps during this, but we will [25:11] skill check the enemy. I keep two creep [25:14] waves like this. I was losing every [25:16] single creep trying to lane up here. But [25:17] now I've actually secured two creeps for [25:20] myself. And if I was XP range of the [25:22] others, then I at least got that. And [25:24] now my lane is shoving in. Did the enemy [25:26] keep the creeps out of the tower? Did [25:28] they know to do that or did they let [25:30] something like this happen where they [25:31] died? Okay, time to resume. Like start [25:33] drawing creep a like non-stop crazy. [25:36] Hope like that creep goes under tower. [25:37] Hope the enemies are like drawing creep [25:39] aggro and messing things up as well. I'm [25:41] just going to make things chaotic. You [25:43] again, you can do this in a much more [25:45] refined manner, but for a beginner who [25:47] is lost, just keep doing this. Watch the [25:50] creep aggro video so you know how to [25:52] creep aggro and then just keep a [25:54] clicking the enemy and stepping back and [25:56] things like this are going to happen [25:58] where it builds up large creep waves one [26:00] way or the other just cuz like things [26:02] are getting so weird and you will be [26:04] able to find some CS rather than the [26:08] lane being static and you lose [26:10] everything. One of your first big [26:11] objectives as the laning stage starts to [26:13] end is to take the enemy safe lane [26:15] tower. This is just a very safe first [26:18] play to go towards. It's not going to be [26:20] like a oneanddone type thing. Most [26:21] likely you're probably just going to [26:22] have to like keep pushing for it. You [26:24] might have to get a couple fights. But [26:25] anytime you're feeling lost and you see [26:27] that tower is up, okay, let me head down [26:29] there. Let me try to take that tower. [26:31] And once you do take that tower, try to [26:33] occupy the enemy safe lane jungle until [26:36] you hit some kind of power spike. This [26:38] will depend on the hero you play, but [26:40] it's usually something like a blink [26:41] dagger or an aura item. And then it is [26:45] easier to join fights around the map. [26:48] That doesn't mean literally never leave [26:50] until you have those items, but if [26:52] you're feeling unsure, this is a good [26:54] default move. And when you have your [26:56] abilities available, you could probably [26:58] head over somewhere else, make the play, [27:00] and then, oh, what do I do? Oh, let me [27:02] head back to the enemy safe lane jungle. [27:05] Now, if you're really not sure what your [27:06] power spikes are because you're a new [27:07] player, around 20 minutes, it's a little [27:10] on the later side, but if you're new, [27:11] then it's going to actually happen [27:13] around this time naturally, you're going [27:14] to see people start moving together and [27:17] just go. You may not understand why, but [27:19] like, oh, my team's all there. I guess [27:21] I'll head over it. It's not always the [27:23] right thing to do, but for now, it's [27:25] it's going to be a safe uh a safe move. [27:28] This is going to be part of an effective [27:29] farming video in the near future. So, [27:31] I'm only going to do the quick version [27:33] here to help you understand why we're [27:34] doing certain stuff as the off lane. [27:37] First of all, a lane creep wave at the [27:39] start is about 160 gold, 240 XP. Over [27:41] time, these ramp up, but don't worry [27:43] about that for now. So, we both have [27:45] creep wave spawning. So, there's 320 [27:47] gold and 480 XP every minute cuz there's [27:50] two creep waves a minute. And we fight [27:52] over this at the start of the game [27:53] because we're too weak to do anything [27:54] else. Now, you might use the pole camps [27:56] or you eventually get strong enough to [27:58] start farming these camps and then you [28:00] can add in an extra 160 gold and 250 XP [28:03] that we fight over. This is usually [28:05] about the first 5 minutes because then [28:07] you have enough levels and enough items [28:09] that you can start opening up more of [28:11] the jungle and you can farm it without [28:12] just dying and wasting your time. So, [28:14] those jungles can be like anywhere on [28:16] the map where you go is very game [28:18] dependent. But for example, say you're [28:20] having an off lane, having a rough time, [28:22] then you might fall back to these camps [28:23] or to this camp. And yeah, you can see [28:25] like, okay, if I just completely abandon [28:27] the lane, I'm getting none of this, but [28:30] I'm getting about half of it over here, [28:32] which is better than losing everything [28:33] in the lane and feeding. So, if you're [28:35] having a really bad time, try to fall [28:36] back to one of these. Uh, some of the [28:38] off laners I recommended can do the [28:39] ancients relatively early. They often [28:41] need an item to do it, but it is at [28:44] least doable um relatively early. You [28:47] will notice though that if we add up [28:48] these values, if I'm the off lane and I [28:51] keep falling back here, sure, maybe I'm [28:53] getting all the creep wave money and [28:54] then farming 500 gold. But if I leave [28:56] the carry alone, they're getting the [28:58] creep wave and then there's 360 gold [29:00] here and then 400 over here. So the [29:03] longer they're left in this area, [29:05] they're actually going to out farm me as [29:06] the off laner. Now you might be saying, [29:08] Zach, I mean, is some of this not there? [29:10] Like the mid laner might get this. Yeah, [29:12] but like the mid laner might get some of [29:13] this that I'm stealing from them, too. [29:15] So, however it's split, the enemy has a [29:18] lot more money available to them here [29:20] than we do here. And I don't want them [29:22] to have that money before the safe lane [29:24] tower falls. The split is something like [29:26] this where the off lane can play the [29:27] lane and then feel comfortable falling [29:29] back to their own jungle and then maybe [29:30] fight over this stuff and then the safe [29:32] lane does the same, right? They push the [29:33] lane and then they feel comfortable [29:35] fighting over this potentially and then [29:36] the rest is where they feel a little bit [29:38] safer. So, a very common safe lane [29:40] farming pattern is to push the lane and [29:42] then go this way and then you [29:44] re-evaluate. Oh, the off lane has shoved [29:45] the lane back. Okay, I I'm like right by [29:47] my tower. I push it back again. And then [29:49] maybe I like I come down here if I can [29:51] farm ancients early enough. And then I [29:53] look again. Oh, the off laner shoved it [29:54] back. Okay, I just come back to the lane [29:56] once again. What if the off laner isn't [29:58] pushing the lane and they're just [29:59] holding it here? Well, okay, maybe I'm [30:01] over here. Let me just head over here. [30:03] Are they pushing it back? Sure, I'll [30:05] come back to the lane like right away. [30:07] Oh, they're still not doing it. Well, [30:08] let me just keep going. Have they pushed [30:10] it back? Okay. Oh, they haven't. Okay, [30:12] maybe over here. and then push back [30:14] here. I could do this number of arrows [30:17] any which way. You can increase the [30:19] efficiency by like timing it with things [30:21] respawning, stacking a little bit [30:22] advanced for this. The point is the safe [30:24] lane has a million options here of how [30:26] they path and come back to the lane and [30:29] get more gold as you saw from the [30:30] previous slide compared to us as the off [30:33] lane. When we take the enemy safe lane [30:34] tower, we open up more options for [30:36] ourselves as the off lane while [30:38] restricting the safe lane because this [30:39] is now the new split where they feel [30:41] safe up to their tower. They push the [30:42] lane out and then h I don't feel so good [30:44] because the off laner is playing it here [30:46] and I can't see in that jungle. So, is [30:48] he waiting to kill me or is he gone? I [30:51] don't know. So, let me just play it [30:53] safe. They shove the lane and they only [30:54] have access to these jungle camps now, [30:56] which is a lot less as the off lane. [30:59] What can we do? Well, we're playing this [31:00] area. Anywhere along this lane, we can [31:04] kill the enemy creeps and shove it back [31:06] in. Let's say we're just doing it like [31:07] right here, right? And then we Okay, I [31:09] don't actually want to push the tower, [31:10] so let me just come back in here. Or [31:12] maybe I come back bottom. Right now, I [31:14] can farm this stuff. Oh, from this mid [31:16] lane, they think or from the safe lane [31:18] jungle, they think I'm farming. I'm [31:20] actually moving to the mid lane to gank [31:22] that guy and then take his tower. Oh, [31:25] I'm actually feeling scared. So, I'm [31:26] actually already falling back to my own [31:29] half of the map. Oh, maybe I want to go [31:31] surprise the enemy safe lane or set the [31:33] enemy off lane. I'm going to twing gate. [31:35] And at any point, you could also just [31:36] teleport out, right? You don't have to [31:38] walk any of these paths. You could be [31:39] farming, see a fight happen, and then [31:41] just immediately teleport over. So, you [31:43] can see that as the off lane, when we're [31:45] defaulting to this area, one, we have [31:48] way more access to farm than we did [31:50] before when the split was over here, and [31:52] we have restricted the enemy's carri's [31:53] farm. And then two, we can make a bunch [31:56] of plays. Whichever we end up picking, I [31:58] don't know. That depends on the game. [32:00] But I'm in a good position to move to [32:02] any of those. Compare that to being over [32:04] here or back here. There's not as many. [32:06] Like you're farming here. That's usually [32:08] cuz you're losing. Like where do I go [32:09] from here? I got to walk all the way [32:10] here to the mid lane. And this isn't [32:12] even a good angle. Like he's going to [32:13] see me coming. Like this surprises him [32:15] from the back. This is just the front [32:17] just like the end our own mid laner. [32:19] That's not surprising at all. I want to [32:20] go to the safe lane. I got to go all the [32:21] way over here. And there's not a whole [32:23] lot of farm in this area. So, I can't [32:25] even like farm along the way to get [32:27] money. When you're back here by default, [32:29] you also aren't stealing any gold away [32:32] from the enemy. So, maybe you get [32:33] farmed. And then you get to the game and [32:34] you're like, "Hey, he's got the same [32:35] amount of items as me." Yeah, cuz you [32:37] didn't take any of his money. You got to [32:39] come here and take the money. That's the [32:40] off lane. We steal their money. From the [32:43] Midame onwards, it becomes difficult to [32:44] say exactly what you should be doing [32:46] because every hero is unique. Every game [32:47] is unique. If you're an experienced Dota [32:49] player, this part's a little easier [32:50] because it's like, oh, I used to play [32:51] support and I know Roshan into towers is [32:54] good, but now I'm in off lane. Is that [32:56] still true? Yeah, it's still true, guys. [32:57] So, for experienced players, this [32:59] shouldn't be as hard of a transition at [33:01] this point. For newer players, there's a [33:04] late game flowchart video. I would [33:05] recommend checking that out for a little [33:07] bit more detail here. But the long story [33:08] short is that you want to try to create [33:10] situations where you have the numbers [33:12] advantage. Dota is a fiveon-ive game, [33:14] but if you can take a fiveon two fight, [33:15] that's a lot easier, especially if [33:17] you're losing. This is the way you come [33:19] back is that you find like three of us, [33:21] kill that one guy, and now we have the [33:23] numbers advantage cuz now five of us can [33:24] fight those four heroes. So, you just [33:26] try to do this. If you don't have your [33:28] abilities or your items on uh available [33:31] to you, try to farm the enemies half the [33:33] map. Whoever is the most survivable [33:35] heroes or the most sacrificable heroes, [33:38] they are the ones who take this risk. [33:40] Rather than stay safe defensively on [33:42] your own half of the map, you take the [33:44] risk to push the enemy's side of the [33:46] map, steal their farm, and offlane is [33:48] one of the roles that would try to do [33:50] this. Then when you either have the [33:52] numbers advantage because someone has [33:53] come back to react to that, or because [33:55] your items and spells are ready, so I'm [33:58] feeling pretty strong, go fight. You do [34:01] the fight, push the objectives a little [34:02] bit. Okay, back to farming. And you just [34:05] kind of like repeat this cycle and keep [34:07] looking for opportunities where you can [34:09] kill the enemies. And now that they're [34:10] dead, you can push their uh buildings [34:12] down. Once you get to these fights, [34:13] enable your best damage dealer. This is [34:16] often the carry, but sometimes it could [34:17] be someone else. It's up to you to like [34:19] figure that out in the game. But we are [34:22] playing initiators and aura builders. At [34:23] least that's what I recommended. So, we [34:25] want to combo with the damage dealer. [34:28] And when I initiate, I want to make sure [34:30] my damage dealer can hit the target I am [34:32] stunning or my carry is attacking. When [34:35] they try to get my carry, okay, I go [34:37] help them. I apply the auras. I try to [34:39] keep them safe so that they can live and [34:41] keep doing damage. Alternatively, you [34:44] can target enemy saves and their damage [34:46] dealers, especially if you are an [34:48] offlander who has a little bit more [34:50] damage yourself. So rather than helping [34:52] your carry, okay, the enemy has a save [34:54] hero like Dazzle. Anyone we try to kill, [34:57] Dazzle's going to save them, which means [34:59] my carry can't actually do damage. So I [35:01] will go run at Dazzle. And even though [35:03] I'm not meant to be a damage dealer, I'm [35:05] an off lane with some items. Dazzle is a [35:08] support. I can probably kill Dazzle or [35:10] at least scare him out of the fight. So, [35:11] you go distract Dazzle so he can't save [35:13] whoever your carry is hitting. Uh, now, [35:15] if you're going to line these two things [35:17] together, fantastic. It won't always [35:18] happen, but typically, do I help my [35:21] carry or do I stop the enemy save or do [35:23] I absorb all the damage from the enemy [35:25] carry cuz we're a tanky initiator who's [35:27] built auras, right? We are hard to kill. [35:29] So, the carry keeps focusing us and that [35:32] means our carry is free to kill the [35:33] other people. Some random tips to close [35:35] out this video. you're going to face a [35:37] lot of pressure to be active from your [35:39] teammates. Like, oh, you got to go like [35:41] do things, you got to make space and all [35:42] that. And it's true. You you need to to [35:45] some degree. Of all the core roles, the [35:47] off lane and the mid are the ones who [35:49] need to be making the most plays. And [35:50] because I recommended you guys play [35:52] initiators and aura builders, part of [35:54] the reason I recommend that is because [35:56] frequently people do not draft any of [35:58] that. So, you'll be the only playmaker [36:00] on your team. So truly, you will have to [36:03] find time to be active, but you still [36:06] got to set your boundaries of your power [36:09] spikes. And you may not know these power [36:10] spikes right now because you're learning [36:11] the heroes and you're learning the role, [36:12] but eventually you will start to feel [36:14] it. And you will realize everyone is [36:16] telling me to join fights, but I know I [36:19] need the blink dagger. Otherwise, I am [36:22] just walking in and wasting my time and [36:25] I never get anybody. We're we're [36:27] feeding. We're we're wasting time. It's [36:29] no good. I need two more minutes to [36:32] finish this blink dagger and then I can [36:34] do stuff. And as you learn more, you [36:36] will realize, oh, I don't need the blink [36:38] dagger. I can go sooner. Oh, I did need [36:40] the blink and another item on top of [36:42] that. Right? That's learning the heroes [36:44] and the roles. But especially for the [36:46] support players coming in to play off [36:49] lane, you need to feel comfortable with [36:51] this because it's like ingrained the [36:53] guilt of like I'm not allowed to farm [36:55] and like I got to go do things as a [36:57] support. No, it is truly part of playing [37:01] core to AFK farm. I know there's a bad [37:04] connotation around that, but genuinely [37:06] it is part of the game. There's an eb [37:09] and flow to the action and it's going to [37:11] be hard to know as you start, but I just [37:14] want to advise you that it is there. [37:17] Like you are supposed to have that [37:19] downtime that is part of the role. For [37:22] the newer players and the support [37:23] players, just try to stay calm about the [37:25] last hitting and mechanics overall. I [37:28] know it can be a lot to take in at once [37:29] when you didn't have to do this before, [37:31] but you will just get the hang of it. I [37:34] know there's not like better advice for [37:35] it, but as you practice it, as you just [37:36] play games and do it more, it's not that [37:39] big of a deal. It's just part of the [37:40] game, but being really nervous about it [37:42] is only going to make you play worse. [37:44] So, I know it's easier said than done, [37:45] but try not to get too freaked about it. [37:47] It's just a video game. It's okay. [37:49] You're going to feed. That's part of [37:51] learning it. Uh, and everyone is going [37:53] to go through this right now. If I had [37:55] to generalize, my theory craft is that [37:59] in the short term coming up here, a lot [38:02] of support players are going to drop in [38:04] MMR and a lot of core players are going [38:06] to increase to some degree because [38:08] support players never had to play core [38:10] if they didn't want to, right? So, we [38:12] were only 100% playing support and yes, [38:15] there was four and five yet to play, but [38:16] a lot of people could do both to some [38:18] degree. So we have been like in our own [38:21] space and then core players their MMR [38:23] was the core roles and then having to [38:26] play support sometimes. So they were [38:28] losing more than usual. Now it switched [38:32] where supports are going to have to [38:33] start playing off lane and we're not [38:34] good at it. So we're going to drop a [38:36] little bit until we get used to it. And [38:37] core players have to play support a [38:39] little less often. Maybe they're still [38:41] bad at off lane. So I don't know. [38:43] Offlane players are truly the ones who [38:44] should be going up right now. But core [38:46] across the board, I think it's easier to [38:48] go between different core roles than [38:50] core to support and support to core. So [38:52] the core players MMR likely to increase [38:54] in the short term. Don't let this freak [38:57] you out. It is just it's just going to [38:59] take some time, but eventually the [39:00] system will balance again and you'll be [39:02] wherever you need to be. Thank you for [39:04] watching. I will try to make some hero [39:05] guide soon for different off laners, but [39:08] I too must go through this process. It's [39:10] one thing to conceptually know all the [39:12] stuff, but now we have to actually do [39:13] it. So, I will also be going through the [39:15] learning curve with all of you. You can [39:16] catch me on stream if you want to see me [39:18] struggling in real time. But once I get [39:20] the hang of it, I will make some guides [39:22] if you guys want to check that out as [39:23] well. I'll see you in one of those.
