[00:01] make because I think the most important part of my job is making sure you guys to spend in the first place. And budget gear was really a great way to do that as long as it's good budget gear, which
[00:15] good. We've got a brand new budget teleprompter by the company Neewer. And if you're familiar with the Elgato teleprompter, which you probably are, channel, this is a teleprompter with a screen built into it that connects to
[00:29] monitor or third monitor or fourth monitor. It was designed for YouTubers script or your live Twitch chat on the screen right in front of your camera, do anything with it. You can put your Zoom calls right in front of it. I do
[00:43] that 3 days a week for Japanese lessons. It's awesome. But here we have another spelled Neewer, pronounced Neewer. If you're not familiar with Neewer, Neewer is a company that makes a wide variety
[00:56] of high-quality budget devices. I've owned a handful of their stuff. I've camera mounts. I'm actually using one of their tripods right now. This camera actually both cameras are on Neewer tripods right now. And they've released
[01:08] the X11 teleprompter, which is in a lot of ways very, very similar to the Elgato one, but because it's almost a third cheaper going to talk about what those
[01:22] compromises are, how this compares to this, in what ways is it a cheaper version of the Elgato, and in what ways, cuz there are a couple, are there compared to the Elgato. Now, this teleprompter actually came out a couple
[01:35] it until they reached out and emailed me and told me about it and asked if they And because I like paying my employees and I like paying my bills, I checked to I gave them a thumbs up. But also we're going to do what we always do on
[01:48] my opinion out of it. I'm going to showcase to you what is the good, the the the differences, and you're going to come to your own conclusions. And let's starting in the same order that I discovered them opening up this product.
[02:03] difference. The Elgato Prompter is $299. The newer X11 is $219. I've seen that price vary down to like $190 on Amazon. I also think Neewer's going to give me a what it is yet. That will be I'll put that here on the screen and in the
[02:17] When you pull this out of the box, there is a handful of things to assemble. It's fairly simple. Most things are like snap into place, there is a slight difference in build quality that you will see slightly
[02:32] little bit shakier. The screen feels like it's a little more off-the-shelf the things that you kind of expect coming from a well-known budget brand. You also get things like Velcro on the back instead of like a custom-designed
[02:45] plate that screws in. And then, you you know, you get the shrouds like this that stick on like that. Although, the shroud situation is actually kind of really well. For your regular cameras,
[02:58] again, you Velcro it on there, and you put the lens through here instead of a you're using a camera that tends to overheat, this means that you don't have to trap all the heat around the camera, and you still have the flexibility to
[03:11] move the lens in and out. They also have a phone mount here. And in order to do that, you flip around this extra uh smaller hole to cover the light leaks. They give you this little clamp
[03:24] with these two little twisty guys on the side. And then, you stick your phone right over the hole. And you make sure as you can. And there you go. Not quite as fancy, but gets the same job done.
[03:39] with something really cool. It's got its own quick-release mount, which is something that Neewer can do because they already make a bunch of things like quick-release mount, basically you You a little plate that you put on the bottom
[03:51] of your camera, and then it snaps on. You push a little button and it comes right off. No more screwing and unscrewing a camera to the bottom of this. Also, it's a lot easier to set a
[04:03] position every time. This is actually something I bought for about $20 to add to my Elgato Prompter, and ironically it's a newer one. It's got these little tightening screws on the bottom, which I mean, you can hear
[04:17] Yeah, a little plasticky, but allow you to loosen them up and down. this direction. So, you can place your camera wherever it needs to go. similar to an Elgato product, but it has some differences that might be a
[04:30] Elgato Prompter uses something called DisplayLink. It's a separate display instead of the GPU, which means you can plug it into any regular USB port and it'll work just fine. It means you have to have DisplayLink software installed,
[04:45] you're limited to the amount of external screens you can have, it doesn't count debate about whether or not it takes up more CPU resources than a regular noticed a difference in my usage. The newer one has two different options. It
[04:59] regular C-to-C cable, which if you plug into the USB-C port or one of the two it just powers it on using DisplayPort Alt Mode. It actually runs like a normal software installed, it just works. It worked on my Mac mini, it worked on my
[05:14] desktop when I plugged it into the that says DisplayPort on it. If you can't do that on your PC, maybe you have an older computer without that USB 4 port, you can use a second cable that
[05:26] plugs into both HDMI and USB-C and then just goes into USB-A on the computer. drivers, but then it should work the same way. This was a little confusing really well on my Mac and I struggled with it on the PC until I figured out
[05:40] most part, I feel like the differences have been pretty negligible. It's kind of personal preference. The monitor on this is considerably brighter than the Elgato one. Like 50% brighter. I know it's hard to tell looking at it, the
[05:55] it justice. So, you're just going to have to trust me. The specs on both of these claim that the Elgato has 400 nits and the Neewer has 600 nits. But, I've never really known what to trust because Elgato's Prompter XL also says it's 600
[06:08] nits and I find it to be slightly dimmer than the smaller prompter. But, prompter to have much brighter whites and more contrast, which made reading text, which is kind of what these things are for, a lot easier. Another
[06:22] feels like they were made for a slightly different audience. Neewer has made traditional teleprompters before, larger ones made for broadcast TV. They've got write a script and then automatically scrolls through it as you're reading it.
[06:36] specifically live-streamers in mind, which is why it has a dedicated mode for reading live chat of your streams. If you wanted to read your live-stream chat still do that, but you have to pop out the chat into a separate window and then
[06:49] full screen it over it. And it might not be optimized for reading the same way the Elgato one is. But, there is also one more interesting advantage of the Neewer one here. Because it's a standard monitor, it's not just DisplayLink like
[07:01] the Elgato one, you can just plug your phone directly into it and mirror your installed or anything. You just plug it in and it mirrors. But, if you want to do have the teleprompter app as well, which is free. There's no subscription
[07:15] between these two are pretty similar. They both have the exact same size 9-in screen. They've both got little cold shoes up on the top there for need. And most importantly, when you plug them into a computer, they work as
[07:28] separate monitors for that computer, so you can really do whatever you want with either of these. So, ultimately, those are the trade-offs for getting a teleprompter for $80 less. I'd love to know what you think about those
