[0:00] Marvel and Sony just released a series [0:01] of trailers for Spider-Man: Brand New [0:03] Day and we're here to break down all of [0:04] the Easter eggs, references, and little [0:06] things you might have missed in these [0:07] trailers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. [0:09] Welcome back to ScreenCrush. I'm Ryan [0:11] Arey and Brand New Day just released an [0:13] awesome second trailer, but now they're [0:14] also rolling out TV spots with brand new [0:17] footage featuring new villains, the [0:18] Avengers, and even a gray Hulk. In [0:20] previous trailers for the movie, we have [0:22] seen Spider-Man fighting a series of [0:24] low-level villains like Boomerang and [0:26] the Tarantula and also recreating [0:27] classic comic book covers. That theme [0:29] continues here with this show Spider-Man [0:31] fighting Ramrod recreating this cover of [0:33] The Amazing Spider-Man 221 where Ramrod [0:36] is actually crashing into Empire State [0:38] University, which is the school where [0:40] Bruce Banner is now teaching. In the [0:42] comics, Ramrod was the foreman of an oil [0:44] rig and was injured on the job. He [0:45] received cybernetic enhancement from a [0:47] corrupt attorney called Kerwin [0:48] Broderick, essentially turning him into [0:50] a cyborg. Ramrod was then blackmailed [0:52] with a poison inside of his body that [0:54] upon release would kill him, giving him [0:56] no choice but to do as he was told by [0:58] Broderick. This led to Ramrod facing off [1:00] against heroes like Spider-Man before he [1:02] was eventually defeated by Daredevil and [1:04] Black Widow. Now, a character like [1:06] Ramrod who was given cybernetic [1:07] enhancements and is being blackmailed [1:09] and controlled by a corrupt individual [1:11] adds fuel to the fire for the theory [1:12] that Coulson had in this video on the [1:14] channel discussing how the DODC is [1:16] behind all of these new villains [1:18] including the Scorpion. But I thought [1:19] Damage Control was the good guys. Well, [1:21] we think that they are using villains to [1:23] cause damage for Damage Control to, [1:25] well, control and thus it would justify [1:27] the agency's existence. In the show [1:30] One-Man, we saw that Control's biggest [1:32] opponent wasn't super villains, it was [1:34] trying to get government funding. Now, [1:36] in this shot where we see Spider-Man [1:38] jumping off the top of this building, [1:39] which is a slightly different version of [1:41] this scene that we already got in the [1:43] first trailer, you'll notice that Spidey [1:44] is doing a different flip this time. [1:46] Instead of a sideways roll, he's doing a [1:48] bit of a backflip. Now, if you look [1:50] behind him in the skyline, you can see [1:52] Avengers Tower, the brand new fully [1:54] renovated version that has been under [1:56] construction. The construction is now [1:58] complete and according to those who saw [2:00] the Avengers Doomsday trailer at [2:01] CinemaCon, this is what the Avengers [2:03] Tower will look like in that film. Now, [2:05] the last time we saw Avengers Tower was [2:06] here in Daredevil Born Again where we [2:08] saw it sporting this new spike-like arch [2:10] behind it, which can be seen here in [2:12] this shot as well. Here we see Peter in [2:14] a classroom full of young kids showing [2:15] that even superheroes like Spider-Man [2:17] need to get their vaccines and that [2:19] shots are nothing to be scared of. I'm [2:21] sure though that J. Jonah Jameson would [2:23] probably disagree. As the nurse goes to [2:24] give him his shot, the needle bends. It [2:27] can't break through his skin. Now, [2:28] Spider-Man has never been impervious to [2:30] getting stabbed. [2:31] >> I've been stabbed Oh god. [sighs] [2:33] >> So, why is a needle now unable to enter [2:36] his skin? Well, according to this little [2:38] girl, [2:38] >> It's probably spider puberty. [2:40] >> Hey, hey, hey, come on. And she's not [2:42] wrong. Peter is going through some kind [2:44] of mutation where his powers are [2:45] advancing. Tom Holland is even quoted as [2:48] having used the term spider puberty when [2:50] pitching this concept for the film. Now, [2:52] our own Colton Ausburn is currently [2:53] working on a video that will be hitting [2:55] the channel soon where we discuss what [2:56] secret villain Holland could be [2:57] referring to in this recent interview. [2:59] >> The villain that we have in this new [3:01] movie, which is still very much a [3:03] secret. [3:04] >> And without giving it away, we think [3:06] that villain could be responsible for [3:07] Peter's skin becoming impenetrable. Now, [3:10] I [3:11] >> Oh no, a tree fell down and blocked the [3:13] door to the store. No one can get in. [3:15] We're ruined. [3:16] >> Uh-huh, check this out. [3:19] I just got this mini chainsaw for free [3:21] and now I'm going to show you guys how [3:23] to get your own free stuff from Temu, [3:25] the sponsor of this video. So, just click our link in the [4:22] description and save with Temu [4:24] instantly. Now, back to what I was [4:26] saying. Here in Peter's fight with Mac [4:27] Gargan Scorpion, remember Mac Gargan is [4:29] this dude that the Vulture hit with a [4:30] car in Spider-Man: Homecoming, but here [4:33] Gargan blames Spider-Man and wants [4:34] revenge. [4:35] >> You know, take a picture, slice his [4:37] throat, put his head in the dryer. [4:39] >> In this fight with Scorpion, they cut it [4:40] and they attempted to sync Gargan's [4:42] lines to make it seem like he's the one [4:44] who's saying, "What's going on with you, [4:45] Spider-Man?" But this is clearly Tom [4:47] Holland speaking and it's Peter saying [4:49] this to himself as he questions what the [4:51] hell is going on with his body, similar [4:53] to this line from Toby Spidey in [4:55] Spider-Man 2. [4:56] >> Why is this happening to me? [4:58] >> What's going on with you, Spider-Man? [4:59] >> Spider-Man: Brand New Day is borrowing [5:01] heavily from Raimi's Spider-Man 2 and [5:03] hey, that's fine with me because that [5:05] is, I think, the greatest comic book [5:06] movie ever made after Superman: The [5:08] Movie. Peter's physical changes are also [5:10] very cool, but just like in Spider-Man [5:12] 2, they are stemming from or are at [5:14] least meant to be a physical [5:16] representation of Peter's quarter-life [5:18] crisis and the struggles with identity [5:20] he's been facing due to trying to [5:22] balance being Peter Parker and [5:23] Spider-Man. That's a struggle that's [5:25] been dialed to 11 in this movie with the [5:27] world no longer even knowing who Peter [5:29] Parker even is. So, Peter is trying to [5:31] figure out why he's mutating. On this [5:34] screen, we see a graphic that indicates [5:35] Peter's hormones are at 50% human and [5:38] 50% arachnid. We also saw this gene [5:41] chart that will play into the film's [5:42] likely introduction of the mutant gene [5:44] with Jean Grey. Now, we know Peter goes [5:46] to Banner for help and in other trailers [5:49] we have seen Spider-Man doing a body [5:50] scan that I think we can assume Bruce [5:52] Banner is helping with because [5:53] Spider-Man is in his full costume, [5:55] including the mask. I think we're likely [5:57] going to see Peter pulling a Mrs. [5:59] Doubtfire and trying to pretend that [6:00] he's Spider-Man's friend and not [6:02] Spider-Man, just like he does in the [6:03] animated series with Curt Connors. Bruce [6:05] will likely play along, but I think he's [6:07] too smart to not put two and two [6:09] together. Peter still appears to have an [6:10] AI assistant, which makes sense. I mean, [6:12] hey, don't we all? [6:15] >> What? [6:15] >> The voice reads out the following. [6:17] >> Organic webs, heightened senses, [6:19] increased agility. [6:20] >> And we see Spidey on a rooftop [6:21] experimenting with his new organic webs [6:24] and as he presses down on his arm, some [6:25] web shoots out causing him to gag. [6:29] And the scene of Spider-Man being on a [6:30] rooftop to test out his new powers is [6:32] yet another reference to Toby Spider-Man [6:35] who has organic webbing and tested its [6:37] swinging capabilities on a rooftop in [6:39] the first Spider-Man. We see Spidey save [6:41] this kid in the midst of a chase with an [6:42] armored vehicle. [6:43] >> You okay, kid? Yeah, you're okay. [6:45] >> That reminded me of yet another Toby [6:46] moment from Spider-Man 2. [6:47] >> No playing in the streets. [6:49] >> Yes, Mr. Spider-Man. [music] [6:50] >> See you. [6:51] >> Now, in our breakdown of the second [6:52] trailer, we actually missed this small [6:54] detail here where Peter is holding [6:56] Bruce's broken inhibitor wristband and [6:58] you'll see that it reads ASM 14. Amazing [7:00] Spider-Man 14 being Spider-Man's first [7:02] encounter with the Hulk. So, the Hulk is [7:05] unleashed and thunderclaps Spider-Man [7:07] and we see the two falling out of this [7:09] building. Now, what's going on here has [7:10] to be some trailer cutting trickery [7:12] because when the Hulk hulks out, they [7:14] are in Peter's apartment, we think. But, [7:16] this shot of this building they're [7:17] falling from is definitely not Peter's [7:19] apartment building. In fact, this LEGO [7:21] set confirms that it is a Department of [7:23] Damage Control building. So, I'm [7:25] actually not sure about that either. Our [7:26] best guess is that when the Hulk is [7:28] released, he goes on a rampage through [7:29] Manhattan and this building is just one [7:31] of the many that we're going to see him [7:33] crash through. Now, in this shot from [7:35] the second trailer, Hulk is green, but [7:37] in a recently released social media gift [7:39] from Sony, those with a keen eye noticed [7:41] that the Hulk is not green, he is gray. [7:43] Now, with this movie exploring mutations [7:45] and genes and the Hulk being gray, this [7:48] is all the confirmation we need that [7:49] Sadie Sink is playing Shatra. I mean, [7:51] this is all the confirmation we need [7:53] that Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey. [7:55] No, but look, in all seriousness, we are [7:56] likely viewing the gray Hulk here. Rumor [7:58] has it that in Age of Ultron, when the [8:00] Hulk was released by another mind [8:02] manipulator, the initial plans were for [8:03] him to be gray. Now, gray Hulk is a [8:05] split personality of Bruce Banner. [8:07] Unlike the green version of the Hulk, [8:09] gray Hulk can speak English fluently and [8:11] not like a caveman. [8:13] >> Get away! [music] [8:14] Run! [8:15] >> This Hulk actually has control over [8:17] himself. And fun fact for you, when the [8:18] Hulk was first introduced, he was also [8:20] gray. But, following unforeseen printing [8:22] issues, Stan Lee decided to change his [8:24] color to green. Now, for a long time, [8:26] the Hulk has been locked away. The mind [8:28] of the Hulk, I mean. Bruce combined the [8:30] brain and the brawn by suppressing the [8:32] Hulk's mind and taking his hands [8:33] completely off the wheel. But, he's [8:35] still happy to use the Hulk's physical [8:37] form, aka the power of his immense [8:39] strength. Gray Hulk could be a flip of [8:41] the script here, though. The mind of the [8:42] Hulk could retake the wheel, sending [8:44] Banner's consciousness back into exile [8:46] like we saw in Ragnarok. Only this time, [8:48] the same way Banner maintained the power [8:50] of the Hulk while sending his mind into [8:51] darkness, the Hulk could maintain the [8:53] intelligence of Banner while sending [8:55] Banner's mind into the darkness and thus [8:57] creating the gray Hulk. So, another MCU [9:00] alum joining Spider-Man in this movie is [9:02] the Punisher. A recent interview with [9:04] Tom Holland features him talking about [9:05] his friendship with Jon Bernthal and how [9:07] the two of them helped each other with [9:08] their respective auditions for their [9:10] Marvel roles years ago. And how Holland [9:12] has wanted this team-up on screen for a [9:14] long time. Here, at Frank's hideout, [9:17] where Peter takes MJ to be protected, we [9:18] see that Frank is living in a boat [9:20] called The Golden Girl. This is taken [9:22] directly from Spider-Man 141, where we [9:24] see the Punisher living in the same boat [9:26] called The Golden Girl. And our hope is [9:28] that after Peter leaves MJ with Frank [9:30] safe in The Golden Girl, Peter will turn [9:32] around and thank Frank for being a [9:34] friend. [9:34] >> Thank you for being a [9:37] >> [music] [9:38] >> Now, in that same issue featuring the [9:40] Golden Girl issue 141, we also meet the [9:42] villain The Persuader. He is yet another [9:44] Z-list Spider-Man villain, but he does [9:46] have the ability to control minds. So, [9:48] it's possible that we could learn that [9:50] he is the mysterious villain using Jean [9:52] Grey's mind control powers for himself. [9:54] A recent TV spot subtitles indicated [9:56] that the DODC boss played by Tramell [9:58] Tillman is indeed the mutant-hating [10:00] activist from the comics, William [10:02] Metzger. And we could learn that one of [10:03] his underlings at the DODC running the [10:05] lab that is harnessing the power of Jean [10:07] Grey could be Roland Rayburn, aka The [10:10] Persuader. And speaking of persuasion, [10:12] maybe I could persuade some of you to [10:13] check out our merch store [10:14] screenrushmerch.com by showing you some [10:16] of these really cool Marvel-inspired [10:17] designs that we have created for you on [10:19] sale right now, like this Nelson and [10:21] Murdock Law and Order parody shirt, I'm [10:23] a really good lawyer business card, and [10:25] many, many more. Links for these are [10:26] below. So, in the comics, Rayburn is a [10:28] Wall Street trader and a mutant with the [10:31] ability to persuade others to do as he [10:33] wishes. Roland is brainwashed into [10:35] working for the Kingpin, and he is used [10:37] to persuade the Punisher to kill a rival [10:39] gang that were a threat to Wilson Fisk. [10:40] Spider-Man intervenes, and The Persuader [10:42] tells Punisher to kill Spider-Man, but [10:44] The Punisher breaks through his control [10:46] and instead pulls the trigger on [10:48] Rayburn. So, maybe in a movie filled [10:50] with the low-level Spider-Man villains [10:51] that most people have never heard of, it [10:53] would make sense that a villain like The [10:55] Persuader could be yet another villain [10:57] being used by the DODC. Okay, and here [11:00] we have a shot of MJ in a yellow sweater [11:02] at a graveyard. Now, the yellow sweater [11:03] is reminiscent of MJ's sweater from [11:05] Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Now, we [11:07] can assume that MJ is with Peter at Aunt [11:09] May's grave, but what will be [11:11] interesting is to learn whether MJ [11:13] remembers Peter at this point. We saw in [11:15] Spider-Man: No Way Home that Happy Hogan [11:17] remembered May and his relationship with [11:19] her, and how he knew her through [11:20] Spider-Man, but he did not remember [11:22] Peter Parker. So, I would assume that MJ [11:24] would remember May as well, maybe just [11:26] not why she knew her. And this could be [11:28] yet another parallel to the Raimi film. [11:30] In Spider-Man, we saw Peter in a [11:32] cemetery tell MJ the two of them can [11:34] never be together. It would be poetic if [11:36] come the end of this film, Peter decides [11:38] that he can't remind MJ who he is for [11:40] the same reason he opted not to at the [11:42] end of No Way Home. He wants to keep her [11:43] safe. And in No Way Home, even with MJ [11:46] not remembering Peter, he has yet again [11:48] put her in danger. [11:49] >> Put you in danger. You just have to [11:50] trust me. [11:50] >> Well guys, that's everything we caught [11:52] in these videos. Huge shoutout to Colton [11:53] Auburn who wrote this.
