# Kids Are Growing Up Too Late

> Source: [Kids Are Growing Up Too Late](https://youtube.com/watch?v=ylj2mYgotwk)

## Summary

The speaker argues that modern parenting often delays maturity, with parents treating adult children as if they were still young. He contrasts this with his own experience of growing up early due to family circumstances.

### Key Points

- **Kids Growing Up Too Late** [00:00] — The speaker identifies a major issue: children are being allowed to mature too late, citing examples like a 26-year-old man whose mother tracks his location and calls him repeatedly.
- **Personal Experience of Growing Up Early** [00:30] — The speaker shares his own background: his mother lost her mother at five, his father lost his father at 15, and as the oldest child born in Russia, he was told at age nine that he would be in charge if something happened to his parents.
- **Early Work and Independence** [01:00] — By 14, he was working in his father's liquor store and earning his own money. He stopped receiving gifts after age 11; if he wanted something like a Sega Genesis, he had to earn it himself.

### Conclusion

The speaker believes that overprotective parenting leads to delayed adulthood, while his own upbringing forced him to become independent early, which he views as beneficial.

## Transcript

I think one of the biggest issues in the world right now is kids are getting grown too late. There's [music] too many parents that are treating their 22-year-old man son like he's nine. I was out at a business meeting with a 26-year-old dude and his mom called him three times. He had to call him back [music] cuz mom saw that he wasn't home yet. I'm like, "You're 26, bro." I literally told him to his face. I'm like, "Disconnect [music] with your mom's location now." So, I think we have an issue of grown late right now. All well-intended. You know this. Like, you have kids. You're like, we all know. Like, we all know. I had grown too early syndrome. My mom lost her mom at five [music] in Russia. It's tough. My dad lost his dad at 15. I was the oldest and the only one that was born in the old country. Now, I got siblings here. My mom, I'm getting goosebumps. [music] My mom from the get was like, "If something happens to me and dad, you're in charge." I'm nine. My mom killed it. I talk often about my [music] mom being the greatest of all time. But like, at 14, I was already working in my dad's liquor store. I was already making my [music] own money. I didn't get a gift after 11. Everything was like, "You want Sega Genesis? Go [music] get it."
