executive producer and vice president of World of Warcraft, Holly Longdale herself. Holly, let's test your sound now. Hey everybody, can you hear me? Yes. Ooh.
Great. Good good morning, good day. Um thank you so much for being here. Um to all the ambassadors that have signed up for this. Uh You're changing the way we do things and
we're super proud. Thank you so much. Uh so over to you, Varya. Thanks, Holly. Uh I also wanted to give a shout-out to two WoW ambassadors and community partners who are helping us with moderation today. It's Wachi from
the Rings. Um as you all know, uh the questions Holly will be answering today have come directly from you, from the community. So, thank you so very much for submitting them through your community
discords. I feel like we are ready to start. What audio, guys? >> Let's go. Question number one. I'll read it out for you. Whilst there have been connections and related story
threads between past expansions, the World Soul Sorry, the World Soul Saga is the first full arc in World of Warcraft. After the last Titan, do you see this becoming the new storytelling model for WoW or could
expansion stories in the >> Hello. future? Uh thanks, Varya. Uh great question. Um I'll give you a bit of background on Um I think it was two and a half years uh
time is a Yeah. Uh it was a while ago. Uh and I was talking with Metzen. It was sort of early when I would became executive producer. And we were talking about what What we
And we were talking about what What we going to do for 20th anniversary? And he thought about it for a while and he thought this is 20 years, 20 years of World of Warcraft. And so from that he came back with a story line
and said we can't we can't do this justice in one expansion. And then the conversation was like, okay, well, let's consider two expansions. And then he was breaking that down. He's like, no, it won't it
won't work in two either. So he's had a lot of these things in his head for quite some time. So really this arc is a culmination of 20 years.
And I think after that um we're going. I think we're going to see how you all feel, how the players feel, what resonates or not. Um but again, this was a 20 years
capstone uh for a while and so we may uh move on be different than what we used to do, but anytime I say something like that, we will always focus on what our players have loved about World of Warcraft since
the beginning. So uh while some things may change, many things will always stay Yeah, surely they already know. >> so much, Holinka. Thank you for the insights. Uh I think it's a new information for quite a few people
around here. Let's move on to the next question. We have plenty of them today. Um so the next question is, as World of Warcraft moves further into its third decade, what does future-proofing the
game looks like for you? Both in terms of keeping long-time players invested and also making the game easier for new or returning players to join. Uh these are awesome questions. Um Surely she would have seen the
So, when we think about the future, it's a we are all thinking alike. So, when we talk about, you know, we were the 20th anniversary and um where we're headed with the World Soul Saga
um it's a big task, you know, we are not resting on our laurels, as it were. Um we want to modernize in a lot of ways.
However, you know, again, I know you know, at the risk of myself, which may questions that are happening, we'll always stay true to what our players want and what they expect. Um that will never change. However,
we do want to add dazzle to it. Um we do want to add what might resonate. Um And that's part of future-proofing. We're also looking at where gaming is going, the gaming audience itself, not
gaming as an industry. Um and seeing how we behave. You know, the world's a lot different now uh than it was in 2004. Um we didn't have mobile phones the way we do now. We weren't competing with
streaming services, etc. So, it's really important for us that we deliver the value that you would expect um in the way that you would expect. And this other idea of WoW's always been sort of a third place,
out, and you can see that we're building on that. Uh for some of our audience for with things like housing, um and we'll some other things like that as well as support our competitive players as well.
We're sort of looking across the board. But also, I think we can do a better job But also, I think we can do a better job of giving you the tools to role-play and live in the the and, you know, have an impact on the
in a meaningful way. Um I did give this really challenging task to our team. And part of this was after watching the life of Evelyn documentary.
What a simple thing it is for two characters to hold hands or hug or high five or, you know, And that's what if that's just part of the vision, not necessarily that in and of itself.
But something where you can really reflect your character's emotions, um how you want to look and who you want to be, etc. So we sort of want to build that out for every player type we have.
Um be it casual, be it we call it mid-core, people that kind of dabble in everything. That's me. Um and then of course our hardcore/competitive course our hardcore/competitive group.
I was listening to the answer about, you know, especially about the part about hand holding and like more ways to express yourself as a role player, and just somebody who found safe space and wants to show their emotions, like I
literally got got goosebumps and started crying a little bit. So thank you for Thank you for that specifically. I'm pretty sure like based on the questions that have been submitted for this Q&A, um I'm sure quite a few people are very
happy to hear this answer. Um Let's move on. Hopefully the next one won't make us cry.
space, about WoW Ambassadors. Uh WoW Ambassadors program has clearly resonated with the community and sparked a lot of interest. Were you expecting Were you expecting this level of response? And how do you see Blizzard
continuing to strengthen its relationship with player communities Uh I love this question. Thank you. Uh I had I had strong conviction as Varya knows
and our social team. Um Um I am a die-hard believer in connections with the community and you know, I've been in MMOs for quite a long time uh as
a player. Um And this idea that, you know, connections with the community is where it all started and that's where it all matters. Um and how we, you know, achieve things together and, you know,
this isn't sort of a casual reference. This is some That's the reason why World has. Um And so, I'm very grateful for this program. I am excited um and
really grateful to all of you um because I think this is where we need listening, where we need to be participating more with you and our Um It's really important uh and I've been
saying that since I, you know, was got the gift of this incredible job. That we only succeed by our communities we only succeed by our communities alone. Um everything we make
uh always. And it I hope that doesn't sound like, you know, executive speech because I you know, executive speech because I honestly truly do believe it. I've had
some of the best moments and memories in my life are things I did in a game that just absolutely blew my mind. The first time I killed a dragon in EverQuest, the first time I was in a raid with Rag,
falling off a bridge and dying, running alongside some another night elf trying Um you know, and just incidentally grouping up and making a friend. It's just all that kind of stuff. Um
and you have to listen to what broadly too, you know, and I think this is a great avenue, the Ambassador program, to do that. You know, we do our best. It's It's almost we do our best to sort of, you
know, understand the way groups of players play, but and we can see trending ways people play, you know, whether it's casual, mid-core, or hardcore. But everyone is unique and different. Um
and to make sure the world feels vibrant for as many people as possible is essentially the goal here. And having this program is really going to help us because you're sort of the front line for what what's happening, what's the
conversation. How can we jump into that conversation as we move forward? And my goal is that this program gets bigger. and I think we'll be working towards that uh
dare I mention uh BlizzCon. But I think uh um I really want to invest in this and invest in you. That's what matters. That's why we're here.
so much like I I will I will uh just double this to everyone on this server and to all our partners community Discord and wow ambassadors. Since last month we launched a month ago. It's been a journey, but how incredible journey.
we're all very grateful to to you, Holly, and to the community as well because without them it wouldn't be possible. Hello, Shawn. I saw you. Um staying on the subject of uh social interactions and so on, this question
interactions and so on, this question has been very popular. It's been asked in so many different ways by so many different people. This is the best way we could summarize it. It's a good one. So, our social systems like guilds and
some point. Whether that's a better management tools, larger capacity, stronger in-game community features, or more or more ways to help players build lasting groups. Um
That's a great question. Uh I'm only laughing because um that's a nice way to phrase uh it's not what it should be. >> true. You did great, Raya.
Uh and we talk about that a lot uh and you can expect to see some uh future changes here. Um forgive me if you hear my dog. I don't know if he's dreaming or
Um Yeah, I think, you know, it's it sort of I can recognize how it might uh that Oh, my dog's name is Gimli, by the
that Oh, my dog's name is Gimli, by the way. Um So, uh Oh, what was I saying? Oh, yeah.
about, you know, community is everything and connections we make uh and then we have challenges with some of our systems, be it friends uh or guild and guild management. So, I think uh you can definitely expect to see us improve
Brilliant. Didn't they already announce that? That's a good origin. Thank you so much. Um and yeah, as I said, that was a very, very popular question, so it had to be added.
Uh the next one is uh from our communities that mostly work with people with accessibility issues. So, for players with hearing, visual, or physical accessibility needs, especially in group
accessibility needs, especially in group content, what areas of the default UI or communication tools does the team feel still need most improvement? And hi, still need most improvement? And hi, Gimli.
he he gets his words in every now and then. now. Uh, he He burnt his paws walking outside. He burnt his paws walking outside. He's delicate for a dwarf. Um,
Um, on uh, accessibility and even approachability in the game, very important. We have some work to do there and I wouldn't even say I can single one out. I think we can do better in all
out. I think we can do better in all areas. We do have a team that is focused areas. We do have a team that is focused on um, accessibility as an initiative. Uh, and we definitely have some work to do there. Um,
I I can't call one thing out because I do think we can do better in several areas and our team is looking at that. like um, you know, doing our work for guild
management, guild systems, et cetera. Um, Um, in game development, UI is quite often um, one of the one of the longer tasks outside of some of the longer tail
technical work that we have to do. Um, so, you know, we try and balance as best we can, but there's definitely more to do.
chat really appreciates like little remarks that Gimli is making. Uh just to please. I will I'm going to I'm going to ask an informal question. Um whether it's for accessibility
reasons or not, how many of you would experiment with World of Warcraft on a experiment with World of Warcraft on a controller? Ugh. With a new UI like best-in-class kind of UI. That's a huge question.
>> a no in there. Go see PC Hardcore. I I I I see mostly yes in the chat, but we will review the answers after this Q&A. And also I know we're being just streamed by uh quite a few content creators. Uh so
Where are they? >> Chat, if you are listening, if you could let your content creator know your opinion on this one so we can get >> at? That will absolutely
That's how it will be. You can you can imagine. It's a big job. Uh there's thousands of unit frames to convert. Um games. I'm
at times after spending all day at my PC. I do play on my laptop as well. Um which presents its own challenges on the couch. Uh to insult somebody by saying that's why I play a warlock. I didn't say I'm not
saying I'm a great warlock just that I'm a warlock. back to you with feedback on the the subject of playing WoW on controller and
like willing to try it. I personally would add a Steam Deck uh cuz it's uh This is the true couch style. Yeah, that's that's the true couch style gameplay. Um It's so good on Steam Deck.
>> Right. So, uh next question. We are slowly moving into more of a like class game and game features questions. So, the next question is what has the team learned from more experiment experimental class design in
recent years, such as support style gameplay, hero talents, and season of discovery? And how might those lessons shape future of class design in modern Um you guys ask really great questions.
Um we've learned a lot. Classic, as you know, you know, since it launched, um was a real eye-opener for the team. Um for any of you that don't know, uh I was
for any of you that don't know, uh I was a player, but I joined WoW in 2020. Um and I started to see some shifts um Of course, she was she was going to swear. >> Um particularly within Classic, you
know, this idea of forever moving forward, um and then, you know, even with Ion talking about, you know, some of the things that we left behind, um of the things that we left behind, um that we may consider returning to. On
the other side of that, um it's really hard to quantify how much Um you know, we collect a lot of data on player behavior and what people are doing even within classes, obviously.
I'm sure you're aware. We have uh mountains of data there as well. And then we look at the sentiment side of things, which is obviously very important. Um and you know,
I would say everything we've learned from both games, um you know, potentially had can have an impact on one or the other. Um even if it's quality of life. Uh so,
really marching ahead with our eyes wide open. We are also willing to question everything, um, be pretty transparent when, you know, maybe things didn't work the way we
wanted them to. Um, I can say there's, you know, that's always going to be on the table, um, but I think it will shape future class design, um,
you know, I hear things on the team. Uh, and they're definitely talking about, you know, where we're going in the future. Uh, but again, you know, we don't want to risk, you know, what players have come to love.
Um, but we also want to be mindful of the things that they may not love, and that changes depending on how you play. Again, you know, we talk about a more casual player versus a mid-core player that does dabble in everything to
a highly competitive player. Um, they all have different desires and needs, and so trying to bridge that, uh, as you can imagine, is a big challenge. 100,000 views. Crazy. >> challenge. Uh, we have another question,
uh, about classes and class identity, which is hopefully a little bit easier. Um, many players love seeing class fantasy reflected in the world throughout class-specific dialogues, or their whole style identity, or NPC
reactions. Uh, is that something the team wants to keep expanding in the future content? Um, yes. So, uh, and I'm
happy to sort of broaden it a bit farther. So, you know, when I mentioned, uh, watching Life of Eblan and just watching Life of Eblan and just interaction between characters, and
I do know how meaningful it is, not just to be Horde or Alliance, um, I'm I'm a Belf right now. Um and we know how popular the Order Halls
uh were and are um for people that still go through them. And identity is important. So, even, you know, the the race you pick, all the way back to, you know, when Classic launched, you
you understood and learned who you were um from where you started the game, and it gave you context, which I think, you know, in an RPG is important, and we talk about that a lot, you know, it just gives you
for some people, maybe not everyone, but certainly, you know, some of our players a sense of, you know, connection to who you are, like a little bit of immersion on what's meaningful, um and what the background and story is, um where you
come from. And then taking that into your classes, And then taking that into your classes, um and your faction. Um I think all that uh is important. And the team is thinking about it, um and how we
approach that in the future. Um and things are going to get a little uh challenging for us in Azeroth uh over the next while. Mhm. And those connections to who we are and why we fight um
are important. They can be personal for a lot of players. Um I I certainly recognize not for everyone, um but for some, definitely. Uh so, you mind and and we're working toward as best we can. What does that even mean?
Thank you for this answer, Holly. I propose we skip next question. If we have time, we will come back to it. Uh we we you somewhat answered it. It's uh about the balance between uh serving highly competitive players and players
who are there for housing, for example. I feel like you touched on it, so if you comfortable, I propose we skip it and if we have answer if we have time, we'll come back to it. Sure. Cool. The next one is a big question
and it's about revisiting old content. >> Okay. Are there plans to continue modernizing older content and legacy systems, whether that's out date achievements, old reputations, collectibles, multiplayer requirements
for them or older progression systems that no longer feel aligned with modern And more broadly, are there plans to make past expansions expansions feel more meaningful meaningfully integrated into the current game rather than only
revisited in smaller ways such as we do in Argentinian, for example. Again, another good question. It's really interesting to me how these questions reflect like we're all thinking similar things.
thinking similar things. Um so obviously, you know, um we are going to be moving into Northrend for last Titan. and again, you know, a lot of this was an experiment. It It could have been
that you wouldn't have been excited about what we did to Silvermoon and Eversong and so on. Uh in Midnight and so we're going to keep eyes on that to see if if that's something players
want sort of a different lens or how we use you know, we we use the real estate we have and when you think about MMOs in the entertainment space, it's an absolutely
massive world. Like absolutely staggeringly huge. staggeringly huge. Um and so we do want to find reasons to to make the world meaningful for everyone.
Um Older progression systems, I think Ian might go cross-eyed if I mention that, but I don't think it's necessarily we're in a space where nothing is off
the table as we think about not just Last Titan, but where we might Um I think we've learned a lot about what it means to make the world feel meaningful and alive,
um and that's on our mind. Um we also know in areas where we've given players agency to have an effect on the world. that's created a lot of memories, and all this is around memories and moments
Um And I think being able to go back to, storied areas, um where you might see some changes. Um and
in some areas where you don't, where it's reliably what you remember. Um We're evaluating all that. Like, where where are we going in the future? Um Teasing. A lot of discussion about, you know,
it's been really interesting for our team to be able to sort of explore within, you know, so to speak, in Midnight, for example, and then adding some, you know, some new because storylines always advance the
world in some way. But we're thinking about all these Um And I do think, you know, some of the past systems, should they be integrated,
possibly, yeah. I mean, I'm not I can't speak for Ian. Uh that would be a big speak for Ian. Uh that would be a big mistake on my part.
obviously came from the Collector's Community, and there's another one from Uh So, collection-based gameplay is a huge part of World of Warcraft for many people. Are there plans to continue
expanding support for collections through more achievements, returning legacy rewards, collectible collectible-focused events, and renewed support for older systems like archaeology?
one. It's a bit of a leading You guys are asking great questions. I will say I saw in the chat I saw some people mention like if you know, if we what you had access to. That's kind of We don't Again,
we don't want to do that. We want the world to feel reliable um and what you world to feel reliable um and what you remember. Collectors, uh
we're working on a lot of stuff. Uh but I will say collectors, we see you. Um and we you know, we understand how important that is
um and how we can tie achievements, um collections, etc. uniquely to your characters as we've um And when we talk about you know, some
And when we talk about you know, some systems um like archaeology uh systems um like archaeology uh and some others, um are have not been um you know, broadly successful.
Um I won't take anything off the table. Um but again, this is about learning and trying to figure out what does work. And I would love to see you know, what collectors really want. Like, what is
Um How do you want the world to feel, you know, as a collector? Well. What are those achievements, you know, those achievement dreams and goals that you have? I think that would
be really meaningful for us. Would it be helpful if we run another feedback round similar as for the visibility of a control? Okay. You you got it. It's coming. We have plenty collectors on the server
and we have plenty collectors partners with us. So, I'm pretty sure we can find you a a wish list very very fast. Uh thank you for that and thank you for being so open to feedback and suggestions and I guess the wish list.
Um the next question is from the collectors again and I again propose skipping this. Uh We will come back if we have more time, but it's about the same. It's about um
finding balance between something that has been exceptionally uh prestigious in the past and no longer available and newer players. So, let's park this question uh and if we have time, we'll come back to it to it, but
yeah, it feels like on the same page of like wish list and where is the balance? like wish list and where is the balance? How do we keep it, you know, as precious as it used to be, but at the same time don't exclude new players? Mhm.
Uh next question uh and I feel I feel like you touched on it and I cried. So, like you touched on it and I cried. So, let's be careful this time. play and immersion, uh what really brings the world to life
are features like social spaces, libraries, class and faction identities, neighborhood style hubs, and rich environmental storytelling. Also, Uh in this area, is this an area the team is looking to
invest more going forward. Yes, absolutely yes. Um as I mentioned before, you know,
that for that segment of our player base, like role-playing is the original user-generated content. Um
and that's really important for the world to feel vibrant for people who really enjoy that. And you know, people quite often tangentially, like anybody quite often tangentially, like anybody who, you know,
cries out for the Horde or for the Alliance. You've chosen something and you know, you're emotionally attached to something. You've picked a side. Um so I do think, you know,
things like social spaces and some of those social spaces that are You know, and I often talk about, you know, with the team, all the people who we hear from who met in World of Warcraft, got
married or lifelong friendships or at least, you know, 20 plus year friendships. Um and people who really want a place to celebrate, you know,
big wins, you know, amongst their communities, guilds, etc. Even, you know, people who want to come together to memorialize an event, you know, that's so meaningful and I think
we want to do a better job on that front. so I do think, you know, in the future, you can expect to see you can expect to see some focus there for everyone.
>> Thank you, Holly. And again from me personally, the pet cafe in Silvermoon. personally, the pet cafe in Silvermoon. Oh my god, that was incredible. Whoever came up with this, thank you. Um
now we are slowly moving into the housing territory. Our wild housing team has been praised for being very responsive to players feedback. That has has that changed how the broader wild
team thinks about iterations, community collaboration, or launch? yeah, I it's really interesting. So,
on the classic side of things, that team is also, you know, monitoring um and reacting to the community as fairly quickly. Um On the modern side, the the housing team
is very much and this is, you know, a space Um Um and, you know, it's
um in intentional um towards those players who, you know, and honestly, I'm sort of mid um I'm sort of mid um mid-core and mid myself.
so, we want to be able to, you know, reach a broad segment, you know, across all player types, um something to enjoy. And player types, um something to enjoy. And this is something very new for us.
Um so, it demanded we react as quickly as possible and monitor uh the situation um uniquely for a feature, much like our, you know,
our combat team does, our systems teams do, um but they're very heads down uh on doing that work. Can we do better um and be more transparent? I think we took a stab at that this time. Um
more so in the blog patch notes space, but I think, you know, that's one of the reasons why I really like this program of the Ambassadors program uh and getting a little closer to players so we can actually see and hear you
um rather than um you know, trying to sift through social media and all of its various forms. Um Most of all I I do want us to be in touch with players who are playing um
Um So, yeah, great question yet again. >> Thank you so much, Holly. Uh and as you noticed, the WildStar room population
and our partner community discords are very keen to provide feedback on any very keen to provide feedback on any subject you may want, so Next question is about housing. It's very short and very sweet, but very
important as well. Can we expect to see a housing road map? Um as you can imagine, uh the entire team is heads down trying to react to feedback um and prioritizing that
feedback um and what to get in the game as soon as possible. Um we did in the state of Azeroth talk a little bit about what you can expect to see in the year. Um but hopefully soon here and you know,
soon in Blizzard terms probably um more than a couple weeks. >> Um yeah, we'll take a crack at uh getting at least, you know, an earlier road map together. Um but again, a lot of this is
being driven by the absolutely magical stuff that's being made, the incredibly surprising stuff that's being made. Um and looking to see how we build the future of housing. Thank you. Uh again, this this this
question has been uh very popular. Quite a few people asked it in many different ways. So, I I guess it is in a demand, so thank you. Uh the next question is uh on a fun side. I'm not sure how fun it's going to
be, but if you can put all practical limitations aside for a moment, uh if there is one thing that you could personally change about World of Warcraft by just waving a magic wand,
approach it? Huh. Huh. Um some a lot of the areas of the game are
pretty vibrant. Um and we are working very hard to try and sustain that over time, you know, uh with our patches. Um and we're looking
more closely at, you know, what we understand about the content, you know, past and present. And sort of looking at, you know, how we flow through, you know, content um and activities for all of our
content um and activities for all of our player segments. Um but as you can tell from me, and that that was my first goal um when I got um with our getting a live team going
Blizzard really worked hard today. >> the eight-week patches or around eight-week patches. Um but you can probably tell from me that I think >> cross region >> is, you know, personalization
and interaction. Um and I often use the example of, you know, these are some of these are very difficult. Like, you know, if you wanted
to high five someone, well, you that means you got to make sure a gnome can high five a tauren. Uh so, there's obviously some challenges there, but I think it's worth it.
Um more dances, more celebratory stuff, you know, when people are standing around, when you're interacting with your guild, you know, the high five, the celebratory things, um
beards, you know, Uh-huh. all that stuff, um mogs, like how do we take that and evolve that in the future. Trophies. You know, for all the characters, etc. Um you know, rock your style.
Uh or rock your onesie, whatever it is. Um our future. When we say we want to sort of move into a third space where, you if you did just want to focus on professions, um or if you did just want
to focus on role play, or if you know you're waiting for your guild to get their act together, um you know, to be able to have some activity uh for those moments.
Um That's really important uh as well as maintaining everything that we do well and aiming to do it better. Um and I think that idea of
personalization, customization, really making your character your own, is important for our future. Uh and so, the team is definitely going
digging into that um as we move into the future. Um you know, I ask pretty frequently why when I put on a hat my hair doesn't show. So, just know you have an advocate in me.
Although I feel like it's an ongoing pain for quite a few people. I'm I'll be honest, I dabble in everything.
I have a lot of fun uh on the role play side. That's so funny. Probably insufferable to the community around me. But um I do like
I like playing dress-up and I want it to go farther, you know? Um and I I've read a lot from you as well that we're just looking for, you know, more options.
That sounds exciting and hopefully uh your no practical limitations uh wishes will come true. I think quite a few people will appreciate it. Um Holly, thank you
so much for your time. Before we finish, I I I promised to ask this question and there is a little bit of lore behind it. So, a couple of years ago Ian joined our content creators for a live Q&A just like this one.
And somehow, despite having like all kinds of questions about class design all all all all the all the very important and serious stuff, the most popular question that people still remember and refer to was what is his
favorite uh topping on pizza? And I promised to ask you what is your And I promised to ask you what is your go-to pizza topping and also why.
This is very polarized. Uh yeah, I can't Oh god. Here it comes. Oh god, it's yeah. It's pineapple. I'm so sorry. Unbelievable. But there's nothing wrong with pineapple
on pizza. It's fresh. It's It's for a sunny day. It's like your cake. program. >> I mean, yeah. I can't. And I you know, family never wants pineapple. Specifically ham and pineapple. Um
