[00:00] Eric, did you finish the E2 the games yet? Relax, that's how we've gotten moved in 50 years. I really love Washington. [00:14] Kyle? Kyle. As a Lonely Island fan and a member of the Quaid Army, I always loved seeing George O'Connor in this film, even if it's just a cameo. But he directed an episode of the Knuckles show, so I'll allow it. Also, his character is named Kyle Lantzbottom. [00:26] Even without knowing all the specifics, this montage puts us on Team Shadow. Badass bad guy. Maybe modern kid movies aren't as scary as they were in the 80s and 90s, [00:38] but what they do have is top-tier action. This whole set piece is a genuinely dope prison break scene where Shadow Pigs set 11 guards, and it's the opening to Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I'm not into scary puppets of the 80s, but this ain't too bad either. [00:50] We need more guys. That is all the guys. Amazing timing on the body drop. Also, he's 100% dead. Up until now, Sonic has been the coolest loose-eater on our screens. [01:06] But teleporting? Skating over water? Sorry, bro. Also, the second movie leading into the Sonic titles from the current daddy, let's just note what's important in this one. You're going down! It is my destiny to claim the throne of family champion, Hedgehog. [01:20] Aw, family. I love how much they're selling it so their buddy gets a surprise. The Goldfinger's 99 red balloons cover is always a win. Why are you guys acting like... [01:33] Holograms. Yay! And the ground goes wild! But also, what's going on? Of course, Doc needs to celebrate the win before he finds out if his friends are okay. What is all this? Happy B. Arthur Day? [01:45] Would celebrate, although I was more of an Estelle Getty fan myself. Today's the anniversary of the day you came to Earth, bud. It's your Earth Day birthday. Although, B Earth Day is... that's genius, and I'm annoyed that no one pronounced it the way it should be pronounced, which is just birth. [01:58] I appreciate the consistency of animal talking. Is that Sonic? Actually, I think it's more like the pre-bullying version of Sonic. I don't know what I'd do without you. Probably be a totally different headshot. Perfect transition to shadow. He's so... Keanu. [02:12] Although that's bad guy. I have dishonored my marshmallow. Correct. No respect. It's really just a question of temperature and distance. It's not a competition. LOL. [02:24] LMAO, even. You have kids now. It's never not a competition. You wouldn't believe the number of things that are competition. I mean, I say those exact words 50 times a day, so she probably knows. Mr. and Mrs. Lacoste, aliens. Aliens? [02:36] It's not like we're from different planets. Oh, yeah, we are. I guess we are aliens. I like how he's realizing it himself for the first time. I often forget that they are, in fact, aliens. Although the way she said it did sound mean. Remember, this is my day! [02:51] They're so wholesome, and always a fun thing to say to your grown-up friends instead of see you later. How they keep coming up with ways to make Tails even cuter, they can't keep getting away with this! [03:05] Neon by Japanese rock band 1OK Rock, or 1 O'clock, is the perfect anthem for heading into battle in Tokyo. Unique superhero landing! Wow, Shadow Neo just got the Matrix trill, didn't he? [03:22] Sometimes I don't realize how unstoppable teleporting would make someone. It's not just dodging attacks, it's getting there before Knuckles even fully pulls his arm back for the punch. [03:34] And really shows you how out of their league they are, that Shadow just takes all three out so quick. Don't try to follow me. So, Shadow is the coolest, right? Everyone agree? [03:46] Okay, cool. Badass bad guy. Going after him is a bad idea. When is that a stop? At least he knows himself. I never get tired of seeing the blue ball in live action. The more you talk, the harder I want to hit you. [03:58] Honesty. Another gorgeous set piece. Shadow's power is going through the motorcycle so it can go up Skytree, and when we cut to the wide, it's just blue and orange electricity blurring up the building. Bro got an idea to slide up a building in Tokyo? Calm down, Knuckles. [04:11] This is a Chao Garden. I'm sure huge Sonic fans got a chuckle at this, and as more of a filthy cash, I had no idea Chao Gardens are locations in several of the Sonic games. However, they are actually peaceful garden areas filled with creatures called Chaos and not restaurants, [04:23] meaning this is essentially a meta and inside joke, so obviously I love this. Are you the catfish, Pika-Pika? Yes, he is. He does look like a Pokemon. Pika-Pika! I love the whole bit, but Knuckles knowing what Pokemon are [04:35] to the point of saying Pika Pika is incredible. The project leader was blamed for the incident and imprisoned. Walter's being coy at all about this is already a problem, but honestly it's in line with how Gunn has operated from day one. Pertinent info like Robotnik's grants and he killed a little girl [04:48] and she wished that was best friends would probably be how I start the conversation. Also, it's just obvious enough that he's bought the stash. Great bait and switch. [05:02] Never change, Dale. Konichi, whaaaaat? I wanna hate it, but it made me actually laugh and say good lord, so I get to win. Again, I don't make the rules. I like to say let Stone be a badass sometimes. He's often the only competent character in the series. [05:16] Killing comedic characters is always interesting, cause I do sorta feel bad, but also, he's probably fine, right? Like, you just have that vibe that he could pop up at any time again. Knuckles removing the head in the only way he knows how, punching. [05:30] It's the goat milker! It's the goat milker! A plus impression, but who's stone is, is the man with the most perfectly shaped beard of all time. Danny Rojas. Danny Rojas's. The things you abandoned. [05:42] The dreams. Farts out. It's supposed to look gross, but can I say something? Does that work with food? It's like I want to have sex. You know what? Just never mind. Those who know, know that this is actually spectacularly fun. [05:56] Their faces are all perfect. Knuckles is confused and a tad disgusted. Tails is just shocked and surprised And Sonic looks almost sad as if seeing his ultimate nemesis in his most private moment has both made Sonic feel empathy and disappointment I will soon exact my revenge [06:13] You see what I did there? You know we're always going to win a fight. Stone gets it. You're not suggesting we team up with Dr. Robust, you think, are you? Yeah, he could have just gone with butt or stink. But he went butt stink and the world is a better place for it. [06:25] You have serious issues. Get out! Hey! Addiction is a disease, Sonic. Always here for a needle drop featuring the prodigy. [06:37] His own branded Occupy sign. Kind of hard to argue with his necessity. Tom-Tom. He rips so cleanly. I knew Walters was too good to be true. [06:49] Don't try to hurt Blyden and Groovin'. Even back then, he was all angsty. Character continuity. But, aw, that's a smile. Look, did this album come out in 1988 and is it currently 1974? Sure. [07:04] But the fact that someone her age is rocking out to the Traveling Wilburys is a win regardless of your patented dick wines about decades or whatever. We don't know if it's Godzilla or Hello Kitty down there. Sonic mentioned it earlier, which really has nothing to do with Shadow's past, but Godzilla is pretty much always a win. [07:17] You can definitely go back through every video I've ever mentioned Godzilla and I guarantee that Godzilla always gets a win. Pretty much. Plus, then from the shadows, Shadow even looked Godzilla's size. Oh, well, that's not Godzilla at all. Too late, it's already in the video now, too bad there's nothing we can do to edit that. [07:32] But Alien Freak works for this movie too. I'm right shy. Even though the stars are gone. And this is when I became totally cool with Keanu voicing Shadow. Because they let him act to his strengths. He does almost seem like he's from a different movie at times, but that's why it works, because he doesn't belong. [07:48] My friends, and you can do or be anything you want. Not because of your powers, but because of who you are. In here. In the lungs. In my lungs. Oof, that's a heartbreaking but fantastic cut, so abrupt [08:05] I need a moment for prevention, Alex I am looking I'll never disappoint on timing Nothing scares an echidna warrior Uh, yeah Do you remember what happened last movie night? [08:21] Tails clearly remembers it Jet, baby, grip Boo. That's the implication that if Shadow hadn't said boo, not much thought he would have been fine. I'm just going to come right out in his favor. [08:34] You're adorable. Huh. That was insane. I just don't get that. Any other villain I'd be creeped out, but it works with Stone. Of course. Yes. Me and the doctor. Best of friends. That's definitely what we are. The way he doesn't even try to sell it at the end, [08:47] all while not having a shirt because Robotnik literally ripped it off his body. Shadow's eyes glowing red in the dark is scary anyway, but also he's just floating there. There's no way I'm not screaming. And now that's all three of the groups that Shadow has made scream. Where'd you go, Hedgehog? [09:00] I wasn't finished trauma-dumping. Respect to Robotnik for knowing what that is, even if he's doing it to Sonic without asking. Yes, I know French. Sound callback. Two minutes earlier. [09:12] Yes, I know French. We're two characters in a movie, being played by the same actor. It's not quite up to Deadpool's mouth, but I'll allow it. the speed of light divided by the speed of sound divided by the speed of the pulse of [09:25] the movie speed. Even more folklore stuff referencing the movie an actor in this movie is actually in. Sometimes the real Jim Carrey sneaks through the window. Someone tell me this is some kind of concussion-induced nightmare? It's not, but kudos to the makers of Sonic for putting at least a hint of realism around [09:40] getting out of tow. Sick transition, and it's giving drones some opening of the Empire. Holy crap! Legally, I cannot not win a dad joke over that awfulness. This is who I am inside. [09:53] A killer line from a badass bad guy. Even my teeth are muscle! And a great line from a good guy with a horrible visual when I really think about it. Poltergeist vibes, but on a grander scale that might leave you feeling uneasy. [10:07] Timing robot makes elbows to sell his gut with the open drum hit in Wouldn't It Be Nice is the stuff we live for. Alright, they got me on that one. Well, that explains the weird green screen, which I do appreciate. Like someone just said, screw it, let's throw an acid trip building memories montage [10:20] and this is why art is the best. Also, an acid trip building memories montage is the fastest way to break Stone's heart and waste beautiful latte art. The Muzak version of Green Hill Zone is lovely. [10:34] I'm not saying I want one, but I will say I wouldn't be opposed to having an all-or-muffin apron. Right, but first things first, what is that? This is... Lil' Tom! Lil' Tom is the first thing I noticed and I couldn't be happier that they address it. [10:47] Their faces again. Tails is shocked. Sonic is confused. He's been a little angry, and Knuckles is fuming mad at that thing. They made a hat for Knuckles? Well, that is what we are. I'm going to stand up and kiss. You've got to love these two. Pretty good movie. Great show. [10:59] Can't we just get Tom Cruise to do this? It's a fair ask. Because not even he should break into the vault. King Crouch of the Hotel, that's like one of his main things. Langley, biopsy pharmaceuticals, Shanghai skyscraper, the Kremlin, the underwater one in Morocco, I think. [11:14] The Sevastopol. I'm sure there are others. So for the last night of this hike, we're going. and Blurred. Funny, for the third Sonic film in a row, mentioned how underrated James Marsden is. Also, that's fire. [11:26] That's gotta be pretty close to the original character selection sprite. Eggman emerging to London Town by Mr. Easy and Craig's I'm Sorry, but Sonic 3 has no business dropping so many good tracks. [11:40] Got fresh avocados in the crab. We'll make guac. Revenge guac. On one hand, I'll probably say revenge guac anytime guacamole is my change for the rest of my life. But on the other hand, I might start saying revenge before other things, though. [11:53] Let's order some pizza. Revenge pizza. We're going to a pool party. A revenge pool party. Or Lee, you've been adding revenge to everything and it's driving me nuts, so I think you might need to start therapy. Revenge therapy. Dang. The fits. How do I refer in the anthropomorphized animals and get suctioned to their silly plans so I can be all Oh okay I guess I wear this perfectly crafted costume so I can do a fig check for my napalm era Am I doing that right Above this is just a cameo but I take all the Natasha Rothwell they give us [12:17] Do you have a gun, Samson? Of course. Guardian Union. Get in. Ultra. Left. Also, Natasha Rothwell pretending to be Pika Sumter playing Maddie pretending to be Rachel is top quality. She's making fun of herself playing this character. It's very deep. [12:31] That's what I... Did it work? Yeah. Yeah, probably not the best reaction to your wife turning into Jessica Jones, but I still can't blame him. [12:43] I think I see the little Tom make another appearance. As the time comes, you'll break the glass. Or at least break something. Same, Knuckles. Same. Ow. Can you have a little more? Yes. There's absolutely no sign of any evidence to support me. [12:57] Yeah, we millennials and Gen Xers know that, but it still actually worked. There are benefits and flaws to branded flash drives, but every good hacker clearly needs one. Their suits only go up to their necks, so it points for ingenuity for hiding by the portrait. [13:09] Gabriella's killed a bullock. She's not a prize to be won. In fact, Shadow, more like Chad-ow. That is dark. Even for you. Sounds the best, right? Like, I want to know so much more about him. [13:24] So, like, that running man while sliding back is pretty impressive, and based on the way it's shot and given that the mask exists, I think a lot of this is too scary. And obviously it would be illegal to not have Robotnik do the robots. [13:37] Plus, that's a dirty dancing swan list and maybe a Blaze of Glory move? Also, the 20-year-old track from the Chemical Brothers featuring Q-Tips still goes way hard. Hear ye, hear ye! Sonic the Hedgehog wants a cup of tea! [13:49] Got him. Sick burn. So that Queen's Guard is definitely going to trip. Sonic is too fast for anyone to see, and that guy just has the crown jewels now. Also, we all know that it's a myth that they can't move, right? They can move. And if you touch them, they can punch you. [14:01] Ask me how I know. Take it, Jacob. Teamwork? Funky changing gravity is always a great idea for a set piece. Plenty of physical humor mixed with actual stakes and danger. [14:17] Saving all your buddies. Sir, you're still alive? See? He's back and I genuinely forgot about this scene, so I meant it. Nice match cut that reminds us that holy crap a kid died. Asher's film has the biggest important character body count of the Sonic films. [14:30] Let's just take a moment to praise the makeup for Gerald. It's extremely realistic, yet somehow has an absurdly almost Muppet quality to it. It feels real enough that you could see this guy on the street, but you'd be like, is this real? [14:45] Honestly, I feel the same way about those suits. Robotniks feel just right. The sincerity with which Limog's dude plays Agent Stone is thoroughly impressive. This is a genuine moment of pain and heartache in the middle of, [14:57] you know, it's a Pass the Blue Hedgehog video game movie. Hats off, fellow Lee. All the way to times just opens up and then the slow takeoff. It really kind of sits there for a bit, making sure everyone is scared. [15:11] I would be. Tom is fighting for his life and you think it'll be okay? The folks here simply tried to comfort you. Big guy Knuckles stepping in. [15:24] And seeing Knuckles back down because he's trying to grow and learn is way more powerful than I expected it to be. I will do whatever it takes. Well, I tried. Classic Niax. My fashion over panels. [15:37] I do love that all the robotnic inventions look like them or have their features, and it's never mentioned, even though it's nuts. I can imagine if every Tesla was shaped like Elon Musk's body, or if the Amazon Smile logo thing was instead just a picture of Jeffrey. What are you doing? [15:49] You're a children! You're a children! Fantastic humanizing moment for Walters. Honestly, Gerald is definitely manipulating Shadow, but he doesn't have some ulterior motive. Dude just saw his granddaughter die right in front of him. Might be pretty pissed, too. [16:04] And a sick match cut to bring us right into Shaddo's mindset as he starts doing something we can only assume is going to be bad. The eclipse cannon is about to turn this planet into a flaming pile of rubble, wiping out everything. [16:17] There's a 25,000-mile radius. He's fusing us. Okay, yeah, that's pretty hardcore. What? I didn't see it coming. [16:29] You have nothing down there. No one who cares about you. Someone clearly didn't see fellow Lee's performance. That man cares. But I have you now. We're family. [16:41] We have each other. Oh, Ivo. You're no more real. Outdone by a dead cousin. Brutal. I know he's ignoring logic, putting the universe at risk by using the Chaos Emerald, [16:54] and letting his rage guide him, but that was pretty dope. I did not know that was possible. This score is flexing its epicness just as hard as Sonic and Shadow right now. [17:09] Did he just eat a Snit, Sonic? Guys, that scene is bad. I don't think you should be shifting TikTok's place with your fighting. Where are they? Up there. Where? Higher. There it is! Don't let yourself open. [17:21] Unexpected isn't welcome. A nano-fish. I haven't seen that since I hate-watched Queen Lantern in 2011. Heh, got him. But I'll never really understand the hate, and now that Ryan has agreed, he's made it even more acceptable. [17:34] You just wait. There's a show coming. What kind of hero abandons his friends to pursue revenge? Sonic's yellow glow reflecting in Shadow's pupils really lands that accusation. Especially the one. [17:46] What's his name? Tom? Deciding you're gonna be mad? I'm not condoning what Sonic did, but if you can't keep people's loved ones' names out [18:01] your mouth, you should probably learn how to block. Did your pain eventually go away? No. But in time, I learned there's something even more powerful than pain. The love we felt for each other Sonic 3 just casually throwing in some life lessons about love while not ignoring the hard truths about pain The lights shine even though the stars are untouchable and heartbreaking [18:24] callbacks. Stop again. Gotta go fast. Don't tell me you've got a catchphrase. That's right, new hedgehog. And everyone loves him. [18:37] And now just casually dropping the hardest possible version of live and learn, the main theme of Sonic Adventure 2? It goes so much harder than it has any business to. And that is why you shouldn't spank. Seriously, a drill for the foot is horror movie stuff. Nails? Child's play. Even [18:51] a knife. Eh, seen it. Looks like a 3 16th inch bit. Tied into one of your toes? Are we watching hospital? Playtime is over. From everywhere I've looked and all the sound effects I've listened to, and from what I remember from the cartoons and games, I believe that Power Glove sound effect [19:05] is original. But it has the distinct aura of being vintage, and that's a skill. Now he's just and Scorpius. This guy. Defense! Again, legally I will get in trouble if I don't win a dab joke of that level of cringe. [19:18] You don't expect to get a frenetically awesome space battle in a Sonic movie, but you don't complain about it when it happens. You just smile. In a solid neck battle hero pose. Any last words? [19:31] Just one thing that I never thought I'd say. What is it? I love you. There was something even better, but I'm not going to say that that's the way you're going to be. [19:44] Steve, I... Gerald really is a jerk. Oh, sorry, I went. Um, Gerald makes Ivo a somewhat sympathetic character, which considering Ivo's role in the first two films is quite a feat. Also, Gerald is a jerk. [20:01] You know what you want to love my granddad? You need one hell of a bug zapper. Perfect bug zapper sound. I'll flick him up and... What? You can do that this whole time? [20:14] I did it! I did it! You're at your continuity. Uh-oh, now the AI swarm at the core of the moon will try to destroy humanity. Get it? You know, the moon ball? Come on, guys, you know it. [20:27] Look what you did! You're at your continuity. Really? The poor guy was just trying to contemplate all his decisions, and Shadow Jump scared him. I have a good deal. [20:40] Any so, I've been so so. Watching that fellow novella paid off. Somehow Robotnik got one of the most killer hero shots. If I can't rule the world, I might as well save it. I'm the only person who ever cared about me. [20:53] Didn't think I was going to get choked up at Sonic 3, but here we are. But I'm also getting nostalgia feels from him standing on that floating platform in the middle of the crazy orange electrical storm. I love that it's friendship that's driving shadow and not romantic love. [21:11] I mean, I like when it's romance too, but it's always great to be reminded how much friends can mean to us. And Knuckles is able to stay awake both because he's Knuckles, pure badass, but also because his knuckles seem to be acting as a heat shield for him. It's been a real drag! [21:24] Thanks for the time. Incredible last line for the character. Sort of jokey, pretty sardonic, and definitely a smidge of misanthropy. Nailed it. And while I doubt that Jim Carrey has actually retired, if this did end up as his last film, it's a heck of a quote to go out on, [21:37] considering his open feelings about fame and showbiz. Self-sacrifice. There's a whole pile of cute right there. You're right. Sounds alive. It's the Bluebird. Welcome to the dirty, rubber-duplicated... [21:50] Let's do this. Alright, boys. Try and keep up. I love that he said I'd get a little hero shot. Ooh, fun low-poly 3D models that kinda remind me of Sonic Jam. [22:02] Who are you? I'm all in for Metal Sonic and Amy Rhodes. Take my millennial money. Shadow's alive! Still counts as self-sacrifice, though. [22:14] Like I pointed out, a lot of important characters died in this one, and while Shadow is definitely a large part of why this movie has a darker feel to it at times, really, it's Sonic's decision to go after Shadow that's the real surprise. I think it's fantastic, because it allows him to be a real person who has uncontrolled emotions [22:28] and he doesn't always make the right choice. It also creates this moment between Shadow and Sonic where they both accept some hard truths. That yes, love is more powerful than pain, but the pain is still there. I can't really think of a better guy to deliver that message than Keanu. [22:41] But Keanu and Ben crush the scene. That's what makes this movie special for me. It's a big move for what is ostensibly a kid's movie. I know, I've been getting some pushback on that lately because is K-Pop Demon Hunter really a kid's movie? Not in a way that means I don't love it, that's for sure. [22:53] But both it and Sonic have zero curse words unless you count one damn. The violence is minimal and never has any blood, and they both earned a PG rating. But neither movie shies away from dealing with some heavy themes. Ones that even move me. And along those same lines, I've been thinking a lot lately about kids' movies and why they're made the way they are. [23:08] And if that's interesting to you, you'll probably love my Nebula exclusive video about four kids' movies, K-Pop Demon Hunters, Coraline, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Nisha. Specifically about the inclusion of demons in all of those movies. And you can watch it right now by signing up with my link and get 40% off an annual plan. [23:22] But that's not all, I have a bunch more exclusive videos on Nebula as well as every single one of my other videos, some even extended versions, ad-free, uncensored, and without ad reads. But, surprisingly, I'm not the only creator there. [23:34] Honestly, the best creator on Nebula is no AI slot. Okay, so maybe not a creator so much as a feature that other platforms are severely lacking right now, but Jetlag is in South Korea, which is always a phenomenal time. Amy's Dead End Dreamhouse is out now. [23:47] It's a brand new kids show for adults from Maggie New Fish that is absolutely hilarious. And there's so much more to check out, especially if, again, can't stress this enough, you won't get tricked into watching something that's pretending to be like a real movie trailer, [24:00] but it's just low-effort AI garbage. So sign up with my link or click the little box over here or in the description and come watch my dang-in-case video. [24:14] 1.21 gigawatts. 1.21 gigawatts! some points where it wants me to watch
