Hey, welcome back to Screen Crush. I'm Colton Oakburn, and did you know that when you leave your room, your toys come to life? >> Okay, everybody, coast is clear. >> So, Sheriff Woody, he is a pull string cowboy doll and the undisputed leader of Andy's room of sentient toys. There's Slinky, Ham, Rex, Mr. Potato Head, the bucket of soldiers, and Woody's love interest, who actually lives across the hall in Andy's younger sister's room, Bo >> I'm just a couple of blocks away. >> So, Woody is about to have his life as Andy's favorite toy turned completely upside down. On the day of Andy's 6th birthday party, the toys anxiously await the arrival of any new toys to Andy's room. After every gift is opened, no new toys, or sentient toys that is, were received. That is until a mystery gift is presented by Andy's mom. Enter Buzz Lightyear of Star Command. >> To infinity and beyond! >> Buzz is newer, cooler, flashier, and loaded with features that Woody could never compete with. Almost overnight, Buzz becomes Andy's new favorite toy, and Woody falls deeper and deeper into a depression of no longer being Andy's number one, or so he incorrectly thinks. Now, at first, Woody and Buzz, they can't stand each other, and Buzz, he genuinely believes that he is a real galaxy. >> And there seems to be no sign of intelligent life anywhere. >> Now, Woody, he sees Buzz as an arrogant replacement, and Woody's jealousy leads to a series of mistakes that result in both Woody and Buzz becoming stranded away from home and actually winding up next door at a kid named Sid's house. Sid, well, he's an 11-year-old boy who likes to strap toys to fireworks, because, well, of course he does. He's an 11-year-old boy. But, in a world where toys are sentient, this can be quite concerning. Now, eventually, we see Buzz accept that he isn't actually a space hero, he's a toy. He falls into a deep depression, but Woody helps him out of it and helps him realize that being loved by a child is more meaningful than >> Over in that house is a kid who thinks [music] you are the greatest, and it's not because you're a space ranger, pal. You are his toy. >> Now, after surviving their stint at Sid's house by traumatizing a child for life, Woody and Buzz do return to Andy by falling with style as Andy and his mom and his sister make the big move to a new house. Woody and Buzz develop a genuine friendship, and they become co-leaders of Andy's new room. One day accidentally torn right before leaving for cowboy camp with Andy. He is instead left behind and thrown on this dusty shelf until he can be repaired. That is where Woody re-encounters an old toy named Wheezy. Now, while Andy is gone, Andy's mom has a yard sale, and we see Wheezy chosen to be sold. Woody jumps into action to save him, and he succeeds, but Woody is then stolen by a Barn. >> You, my little cowboy friend, are going to make me big. >> Now, Woody isn't going to be going on sale at the toy barn. No, because he isn't just an ordinary toy. He is a collector's item, the star of a vintage television show called Woody's Roundup. >> He meets Bullseye the horse, Stinky Pete the Prospector, and Jessie the yodeling cowgirl. Now, Jessie's story becomes one of the most emotional in the entire franchise. We learn that years earlier, Jessie belonged to a little girl named Emily. Emily loved Jessie deeply and took her everywhere. But, as Emily grew older, she slowly stopped playing with her doll. Eventually, Jessie was left under a bed, forgotten, and abandoned before finally being donated. The heartbreak of losing Emily left Jessie terrified of ever trusting another child again. Unlike Woody, Jessie has experienced what happens when a child grows up and moves on. So, Woody does consider staying with Jessie and the others and becoming part of a museum in Japan because it would guarantee that they would never be abandoned and would be admired forever. But Woody ultimately realizes that a toy's purpose is not to sit behind glass. It's to be loved and played with even if that relationship eventually comes to an end. Stinky Pete, who throughout the film has been an obstacle to Woody's return home, he ultimately gets nabbed by a little girl and he joins a collection of Barbies. Woody and Buzz and they become part of Andy's toy family. Now, several years later after many, many great years of playtime and love, the toys do ultimately find themselves confined to a toy box because Andy is all grown up and mom has been on him about deciding what donate. When he opens up his toy box, he puts the family of toys that we've been following for all of these years into a trash bag that he intends to then go into the attic for safekeeping, which is exactly where Woody and Buzz and the spend the rest of their days and they were perfectly fine with that. But there's a misunderstanding and some of the toys believe that Andy meant to mom thinks that the toys were meant to be donated. So, she takes them to Sunnyside Daycare. Now, at first, Sunnyside appears to be a paradise. There's a revolving door of kids for years to come and endless opportunities to be played with. But the toys soon discover that the daycare is actually being controlled by Lotso Huggin Bear, a teddy bear who became bitter after being replaced by another version of himself when he was lost. Here at the daycare, Lotso has built a toy dictatorship where newcomers are forced into the rough toddler room while he and his inner circle enjoy the easy life of the old Andy's toys. They decide they are going home, but their adventure culminates at a landfill where the toys find themselves trapped on a conveyor belt Realizing that they may not survive, they join hands and face their fate together. The toys, however, are ultimately saved by the alien toys using >> they make it back home ready to go in the attic. But Andy decides that rather he wants them to bring joy to another child like they did him. He then donates them to a little girl named Bonnie. One by one, Andy introduces the toys to Bonnie and he spends one final afternoon playing with them before driving away to >> No, Dr. Porkchop's attacking the haunted bakery. Woody, you got to stop them. >> Buzz Lightyear to the rescue. [music] >> For Andy, this is the end of childhood and he's starting a new chapter and so of the toys that she inherited from Andy, but Woody struggles to find his place as not the favorite. Unlike Andy, Bonnie rarely chooses Woody during playtime. Woody's importance has faded, yet still he remains devoted to Bonnie's happiness. Now while in kindergarten orientation, Bonnie creates a new toy named Forky out of a plastic spork. Now Woody becomes determined to protect Forky, but the problem is that Forky, he doesn't believe he's a toy at all. He sees himself as trash and he repeatedly tries to throw himself away. >> No, no, you're a toy now, Forky. Come on, stop. Stop it. Hey, no, no, no. Come Well, I guess I'll just babysit. >> So as Woody helps Forky discover his Bo Peep. >> Bo >> I never thought I'd see you again. >> Now Bo, she had been sold years earlier. In fact, she's not in Toy Story 3. She has spent years living independently as a lost toy. Rather than belonging to a single child, she now travels from place to place helping toys find new homes. Now seeing Bo again forces Woody to re-evaluate everything that he believes about being a toy. For decades, Woody defined himself through serving a child, but now he begins to wonder whether purpose can exist beyond that relationship. This adventure eventually others to an antique store where they face off against Gabby Gabby, a doll desperate to obtain Woody's voice box so she can finally be loved by a child. Gabby, she's not evil. She's just lonely. Now, after helping Gabby find a the biggest decision of his life. He can where he is rarely played with, and where in a few years he'll once again be faced with his kid going off to college. Or he can instead stay with Bo Peep and help lost toys find children who need them. For the first time, Woody chooses a path that isn't defined by the child's needs, but instead his own. And Buzz, he recognizes that Woody has earned this right to follow his heart, and the two emotional goodbye after decades of adventures together. And as Woody leaves, Jessie effectively becomes the senior leader of Bonnie's toys. The cowgirl who once feared abandonment more than anything has become one of the most trusted members of the family. And by the end of Toy Story 4, Woody and Bo Peep, they travel together as lost toys, helping others find loving homes.
