[0:00] There are few names as iconic as Stephen
[0:03] Spielberg in the film industry. For the
[0:05] longest time, his name was synonymous
[0:08] with high quality blockbuster cinema.
[0:11] And his newest film just dropped,
[0:14] Disclosure Day, and there was a lot of
[0:16] hype and mystique around it. A lot of
[0:18] people were really excited as like a
[0:20] return to form for Spielberg.
[0:22] And uh I've just seen it. It's like
[0:28] not great. Like it's I don't think it's
[0:31] like a terrible movie, but it's a let
[0:34] down. Like if Spielberg's name wasn't on
[0:37] this, I think the critics's reception to
[0:40] it would have been far more harsh. Cuz
[0:42] right now it's sitting at a pretty
[0:43] respectable um percentage from critics,
[0:47] but it's not a very inspired film, and
[0:50] it's certainly not the kind of film that
[0:53] it presents itself as in its marketing.
[0:55] It's actually a pretty generic one all
[0:58] things considered, which sucks to say
[1:01] because the ingredients in this stew are
[1:04] solid. Aliens, Spielberg,
[1:08] how can you go wrong? They found a way.
[1:11] It's Let's just Let's just get into the
[1:14] spaghetti meatballs here. Obviously,
[1:16] there's going to be spoilers. Here's
[1:18] your spoiler warning. We follow two
[1:20] characters, Daniel and Margaret. Daniel
[1:22] is part of this secret uh offthebooks
[1:26] huge mega corporation that deals with
[1:31] coverups for the aliens and the alien
[1:33] tech that they have and have interacted
[1:37] with. And he decides to go rogue. He
[1:40] grabs all the archives and he wants to
[1:42] release it to the world because he
[1:43] believes humans have a right to that
[1:46] knowledge. Margaret is a weather woman
[1:50] who out of nowhere has an encounter with
[1:53] a cardinal that awakens something inside
[1:55] of her. And then when she goes on air,
[1:58] she starts speaking the brown note and
[2:01] everyone's pooping and [ __ ] and
[2:02] farting all over the world. And it turns
[2:05] out it bestowed upon her special powers.
[2:08] So she can look at people in their eye
[2:11] and she gets to drop in on their life.
[2:14] She sees everything they've ever
[2:16] experienced or ever felt. So, she has a
[2:20] gift. And Daniel also has a gift. He is
[2:24] a math genius, a real math whiz. So, he
[2:28] is able to speak math. It's the
[2:32] universal language. And the two of them
[2:35] go on a big adventure. Margaret feels
[2:38] Daniel out there in the ether and she's
[2:40] like a [ __ ] like UAV online like it's
[2:44] a Call of Duty killstreak constantly
[2:46] tracking him across the across the
[2:49] world. Daniel is on the run from his ex
[2:52] employer who is trying to hunt him down
[2:54] to prevent him from releasing it because
[2:56] they don't want it out there. They
[2:57] believe it's going to cause a panic cuz
[2:58] the world's already on the brink. And
[3:00] Daniel is avoiding the most incompetent
[3:02] agent you'll ever see. Like the men in
[3:05] black here are really dumb. Like three
[3:08] stooges level silly stupid. And they're
[3:11] supposed to be like the most elite
[3:12] agents ever. Like they can basically be
[3:14] anywhere they need to be like that. They
[3:17] [ __ ] teleport there basically. And uh
[3:20] the head guy
[3:23] whose name I'm blanking on, what's his
[3:24] name? What's his name? Noah. Noah has an
[3:28] alien artifact. It's basically an alien
[3:30] Sharpie and he can bop it, turn it,
[3:33] twist it, and he is able to like jack
[3:36] into the minds of people that he's
[3:39] trying to locate. So he like gets into
[3:41] the mind of Daniel's girlfriend to try
[3:43] and control her and find out where they
[3:46] are. So he can like astral project
[3:48] himself and even control her actions. is
[3:51] like he basically works her like a
[3:52] puppet,
[3:54] which Daniel is well aware of and still
[3:58] takes very minimal precautions to stop
[4:00] that from happening even though Noah is
[4:02] spamming that ability to keep tracking
[4:04] him. So Daniel's also not, you know,
[4:07] super great at this whole escaping
[4:08] thing, but he always finds a way somehow
[4:10] to slip by them. Anyway, Margaret and
[4:12] Daniel eventually meet, and it turns out
[4:14] these two have been blessed by the
[4:15] aliens, and the aliens have been here
[4:17] for a long, long time. and Wardex, that
[4:21] company has been like torturing them,
[4:22] interrogating them and using their
[4:24] technology.
[4:26] And now these two have met and their
[4:29] memories get unlocked. They shared an
[4:31] experience where the aliens chose them.
[4:33] They [ __ ] abducted them. And it's the
[4:36] scene where they're like going through
[4:39] it. They're reliving it is really,
[4:42] really really
[4:44] silly. Like the aliens present
[4:47] themselves as animals to to them while
[4:49] while they're kids and then they go to a
[4:52] ship and then an alien
[4:55] puts stones on their face and that's
[4:57] where they get their powers from which
[4:59] then randomly awaken when visited by a
[5:02] cardinal. And then eventually it ends
[5:05] with them going on air revealing all of
[5:08] the videos and the evidence and proving
[5:11] to the world aliens are real. It's
[5:14] disclosure day. And then they even wheel
[5:16] in one of the aliens. Like there was
[5:19] another detractor from that company. He
[5:21] wheels in an alien. The aliens [ __ ]
[5:23] scenile and kind of stumbles up a little
[5:26] bit and then he grabs Daniel, whispers
[5:30] something, and then delivers a message
[5:32] to the world that we don't get to hear.
[5:34] Left up to interpretation.
[5:36] That's the movie in a nutshell.
[5:40] And it's just I really wanted it to be
[5:44] good. I wanted to like it, but it's just
[5:46] not great. Like I didn't hate it. Like
[5:48] it is a wholesome movie. And there are
[5:50] moments that I think are are stronger
[5:52] than others. Uh but basically it's just
[5:57] like a really standard by the numbers
[6:00] chase film. And the chasing isn't that
[6:04] exciting. Like it never felt tense. And
[6:07] there is really cheesy scenes out the
[6:11] wazoo which have their own certain charm
[6:13] to them but like good heavens there's a
[6:16] scene where she's using her power to
[6:18] break Daniel out. So she feels where he
[6:21] is. He's been captured by Wordex. So she
[6:23] goes in and she starts like you know
[6:25] dropping in on everyone's mind but then
[6:27] also she is changing what they are
[6:30] seeing. So they are seeing their child,
[6:33] their dead grandmother, their, you know,
[6:37] tax agent, like whoever they want to
[6:39] see, they see. And then they're just
[6:41] blown away like
[6:44] and just let her do whatever she wants,
[6:46] including Noah, the main bad guy who
[6:50] you think would not care as much, but
[6:53] she just walks in through all these
[6:55] people. Noah tries to stop her, but she
[6:58] looks him in the eyes and he's seeing
[6:59] his dead wife, and he's just blown away.
[7:02] He's like,
[7:05] So then she gets to just break him out
[7:07] for free. And as people are trying to
[7:10] step in and stop her, she's looking them
[7:12] in the eyes and projecting their loved
[7:14] ones in front of them. And they just go
[7:17] and let her let her by. Like, it's not
[7:19] like she hypnotizes them or anything.
[7:21] just shows them their loved ones and
[7:23] they're just
[7:26] let her through. So then she just walks
[7:29] out of the base. It reminds me of a
[7:30] scene from a Neil Breen movie called I
[7:33] am Here Now. It actually felt straight
[7:36] out of that movie, that whole sequence,
[7:38] cuz it goes on for a while. Like
[7:42] I don't think that power would have
[7:45] allowed her to do that. Especially
[7:48] considering everyone there knows about
[7:51] like you know what the alien powers are
[7:54] capable of and that she is you know one
[7:57] of them or at least has that kind of
[7:59] gift. But I guess they when faced with
[8:02] it directly couldn't couldn't believe it
[8:04] and couldn't you know fight back. And
[8:07] there's even a re to cap off the scene.
[8:10] The uh main guy, Noah, goes, "What is
[8:14] she?" And then the other guy, who hasn't
[8:17] been like seeing anything from her cuz
[8:19] she hasn't looked him in the eye, he
[8:20] says, "Unstoppable." Then he goes and
[8:23] gets a gun and starts chasing them
[8:25] around with a gun. Well, I only just
[8:28] realized my camera was really zoomed in
[8:31] for this whole review
[8:34] and I don't really want to do it all
[8:36] over again. So, I think I'm going to let
[8:39] it ride.
[8:42] Sorry to say, but yeah, there's no need
[8:44] to keep yapping about it. There are some
[8:46] things I liked about it. Like, I think
[8:48] the first half of the film is definitely
[8:49] better than the second half. The second
[8:50] half, I think it gets really, really
[8:53] goofy. But yeah, in the first half I
[8:55] think there is some interesting things
[8:56] that they were toying around with and
[8:58] setting up and
[9:00] didn't didn't really lead to a whole
[9:02] lot, but like there were some
[9:04] interesting moments and some of the
[9:05] scenes were pretty solid. I just don't
[9:07] think any of like the big emotional
[9:09] beats were really hitting and that a lot
[9:12] of it was basically just focused on
[9:15] these chases that were hard to get into.
[9:20] It was just I don't know. It just felt
[9:22] very standard and and safe. Anyway
[9:25] though, I don't think it's like a
[9:26] horrible film. It's just not a very
[9:28] great one. And again, if Steven
[9:32] Spielberg's name wasn't the name on
[9:34] this, I I think that would be pretty
[9:37] unanimous across the board that it's
[9:39] just kind of a eh movie. That's really
[9:43] about it. So, Yep.
