## Summary

This video explores seven effective ways to monetize a podcast, emphasizing that while advertising remains the primary model, diversification is crucial for sustainability. The host, Bárbara Falcão, shares insights from the 2023 Podcast Movement event and highlights strategies like crowdfunding, YouTube monetization, and affiliate sales.

### Key Points

- **Monetization Challenges** [00:03] — Monetization remains a key challenge in podcasting, with little progress since 2016, as discussed at the Podcast Movement event.
- **Advertising** [02:09] — Advertising is the most obvious monetization method, but it requires an established audience or public figure status. It can include audio ads, testimonials, or branded content.
- **Crowdfunding** [04:00] — Crowdfunding or subscription models offer exclusive benefits like early access, bonus episodes, or community access. Example: 'Não Invibilizate' by Deia Freitas.
- **YouTube Monetization** [04:56] — YouTube is recommended for its algorithm that helps reach audiences. Once criteria are met, YouTube pays creators directly.
- **Self-Promotion** [05:50] — Use the podcast to promote your own company or services, attracting clients through quality content and a loyal audience.
- **Selling Products** [06:28] — Sell courses, e-books, or mentorships to engaged listeners who want deeper connection. Example: host sells an e-book on the channel.
- **Affiliate Sales** [06:54] — Promote third-party products (digital or physical) and earn commissions. Example: affiliate links for equipment used in recording.
- **Platform-Specific Monetization** [07:34] — Aurelo, a Brazilian podcast platform, allows listeners to allocate part of their subscription fee to chosen podcasts. Requires scale and marketing effort.
- **Listener Trust** [10:09] — 65% of podcast listeners tend to buy products recommended by hosts, highlighting the importance of quality over volume when partnering with brands.

### Conclusion

Monetizing a podcast requires building a community and producing quality content before expecting returns. Diversifying income streams beyond advertising is essential for long-term sustainability.

monetize your podcast... If you had asked me this question a short time ago, my answer would have been completely different, but things have changed a lot in recent years, in recent months. I think
we can already have a more consistent idea of how to make money with podcasts. We've moved beyond that discovery phase, when people didn't yet know what podcasts were, to a phase where podcasts have become popular.
So we can have a much better understanding of these more effective ways to monetize. In this video, I'm going to tell you five ways to make money with your podcast. Come with me! Welcome
to the Reverbera channel! My name is Bárbara Falcão, I'm a journalist with a master's degree in communication, and I've been working with radio podcasts for over 10 years. Feel free to subscribe to the channel, like this video, comment
suggesting topics you'd like me to talk about, and also to check out the podcast manual, our e-book that teaches you step-by-step from zero to a successful podcast. The link is in the video description. Let's go, folks! Before we get into the
actual subject... Monetization... I just wanted to highlight one thing: this point we have today regarding podcasts. Every year we have an event, the largest event in the world, that brings together creators and enthusiasts from all over the world, called
Podcast Movement, and this year, in 2023, it was held in Denver, Colorado. Some perceptions from creators and people who participate in this event every year are that things haven't evolved much since 2016, so it's been 7 years since the
event started. Some points, some challenges, continue to be discussed and debated, but without much progress, and monetization is the main one because we need something sustainable. It's not worth it to
simply keep producing content without a financial return. So, let's be want is to be able to pay the bills, to make money, and this is still a big challenge when we talk about podcasts. That said, let's get to the seven ways
I promised in today's video. The first way is the most obvious of all, which is advertising. So you have sponsors who will sponsor your this? Generally, sponsors... They want results, they're not going to sponsor
a program that just started and does n't yet have an audience. Unless you're already a public figure, a digital influencer. kit to the brand that's relevant to your podcast and say, "Look, my
is this, the location is this, I have so many listeners, are you interested in say yes or no. I'm not going to go into the details of the forms of advertising that exist in podcasts because there are countless. So, for
completely independent ad from your podcast or your content, an audio you play at the beginning or in the middle of the video, or it can be a testimonial, something you, as the presenter, will read during the presentation, thanking
the sponsor personally. There are many ways. We could even record talking about sponsors, you can also think about branded content, which would be the partnership with a brand. So sometimes you don't yet have a podcast, but you say, "Wow, this
brand would be perfect for this project." Look for Marc and talk to her, and then we'll do a podcast together. She would come in not only as a supporter but as a co-creator, participating in all the processes. It's
worth remembering that advertising is today the main business model of journalism, the main source of revenue, and for me, this lack of diversification of income, of revenue, is one of the reasons for the crisis in
journalism today. Don't bet all your chips on advertising. Don't bet everything on companies, on sponsors, because that may not be the best path. Of course, it can work, but if you bet everything on that, it could go very wrong. The
second way, which is also super conventional, is crowdfunding. Subscription, whatever you want to call it, this system works as follows: the listener of your podcast, the person who watches your podcast, will support you
in some way, usually with a monthly amount, and you will offer this person exclusive benefits. So you can offer early access to episodes, exclusive episodes for subscribers, access to a WhatsApp group, the
possibility for this person to suggest topics for future episodes, and so on. This, for me, is a great way to maintain your podcast, provided you have... People interested in your content, and an example of success that
I give is Deia Freitas's "Não Invibilizate" (Don't Make It Unviable), which survives on this; she has people pay to have access to this exclusive content. The third way, which for me is one of the best, one of the fastest and most efficient nowadays,
I always say your podcast has to be on YouTube because when we look at all the platforms, YouTube is the only one that is actually looking at creators and has an algorithm that
helps you, that makes your podcast reach interested people. So, if you were to ask me today what the big bet in terms of revenue is for creating a project, I would tell you to invest in YouTube strategies because
we know that if you meet the criteria, YouTube will start paying the criteria, YouTube will start paying
fourth way to make money is a somewhat indirect way, but it also works, which is to use the podcast to promote your company or to... Self-promotion means promoting your image and thereby increasing your income.
So, you have a podcast for your company, an interesting podcast that ends up attracting new clients, whether for services or products. But this podcast will give you a return, which is subjective because it's
not so certain. It's not like I'll put it on TV and suddenly my clients will increase. No, your podcast has to have good quality content, even if your audience isn't that high or large. If it's a loyal audience that
identifies strongly with your content, that audience will certainly be a potential client for your company. Fifth way: sell courses, mentoring, whatever is interesting to you, whatever you have. So, for example, here on the
YouTube channel, it's not a podcast, but I sell an e-book here. So have a product so that people who are interested, who like it, who identify with you, a person likes you so much and says, "Wow, I'd like to connect
more deeply with this person," you'll have a product there for that person who is interested and wants to delve even deeper. So use the podcast as a lever to sell your courses, your... E-books and mentorships are a sixth
method that works for YouTube and also for podcasts, which is affiliate sales. So you don't have a product, but you take a third-party product, sell it, and earn a commission. This works for both
digital products, like courses, e-books, and everything else, as well as physical products. So, for example, I'll put this using to record this video in the link in the description. If you buy through the link I put, I'll
but I'll earn a small commission. This doesn't increase the price amount, and as an affiliate, I'll still earn a percentage. So this is also a way to make money with your
podcast. And to finish, I left this for last because it's a method that's not so popular but can also work for you, which is through platforms. Actually, a specific platform called Aurelo is a
Brazilian podcast streaming platform. So it's a competitor of Spotify, Apple, and Google; it's a platform where you listen to podcasts, and it has monthly subscription options. Like the
other ones I mentioned, you pay a monthly fee, you, the listener, pay a monthly fee to have access to all the platform's features, to all the platform's features, and within that monthly fee, I can allocate
part of what I pay each month to a specific podcast of my choice. So let's suppose I pay R$1 per month, and of that R$1, R$2.50 goes to the podcast creator I chose. " I want this podcast, it's my favorite,"
of my subscription. Why did I allocate that percentage? And lastly, because it's not very popular, because to get results you need scale. In other words, you need a lot of people paying R$2.50 per month for it to actually make a difference in your
need to direct your audience to that specific platform. This, for me, sometimes ends up being detrimental, because when you limit yourself to a specific platform, you end up limiting your audience as well. So you
also need a marketing effort to say, "Hey guys, go to Aurelo, listen to my podcast on Aurelo, and if you subscribe, send me a portion of that subscription and choose my podcast." To receive even a little bit of that money,
I think it's a huge effort and the return isn't that great. Well, you noticed there are many ways, right? Here I listed seven. But if we go further, we'll still come across other ways to make
money. These are the main ones. One thing that needs to be clear when we talk about podcasts is that making money isn't immediate; you need to work, you need to build a community, you need to create
quality content before even thinking about making money. So, the other day there was someone who said, "Oh, I'm wanting to start a videocast, give me some tips for you need to put your videocast together, first your project needs to be
running, you need to have an audience, even if it's not a very large audience, but before it's off the ground, it's very difficult to get sponsors, except in cases where you're already a digital influencer, a
public figure, and have some relevance in your field. In those cases, you can actually look for a brand before the project is even off the ground." And an to mention is that when we... This is a discussion about podcast advertising. Podcasts
have a significant advantage because listeners generally give a lot of credibility to what the producer or presenter says. There's even research that says 65% of podcast listeners tend to buy
a product recommended by the podcast host. In other words, even if there are 10 people listening to a podcast, more than six of them will be likely to buy a product advertised by the host.
responsible when you associate with a brand. When showing your numbers to the brand you want to partner with, you shouldn't just focus on volume, but on quality.
a loyal audience that will listen attentively and accept your recommendations. This should be used product. That's all for today. I hope you enjoyed it. Comment below what
