But Jason give us introduction. Who are you, [14:13] >> I don't even know where to begin. I think part of me is is is an educator, I guess. Um succeed in their in their in their journeys. [14:27] I work at Cisco. I've been at Cisco for 13 years now. And I've been fortunate and blessed to work on writing a lot of the books and videos and training for Cisco Press, Pearson, and O'Reilly over the last uh [14:39] pretty much 13 years or 12 years. Uh and you know, CCNA I am the new is uh it's a it's a tremendous amount but it's it's an honor. And we're we're currently swinging away on that and then [14:55] and working on that new edition. So it's been a lot but it's been a lot of a lot of fun and a great ride and it's kind of cool to see how everybody's growing and evolving over the years and uh I'm just blessed to be here and thank [15:08] >> Absolutely. We appreciate you being here. It's uh it was all Chuck. Chuck is >> So he made it happen. How about that, Chuck? >> Yeah, Jason, he's he's awesome. I've known Jason for years now. He's just a a [15:24] light in a dark place. >> Thank you. >> But no, like when when you told me that, you know, you were taking over for "Oh my gosh, I have to get him on the stream to talk about CCNA. It's going to [15:37] be amazing." Uh networking and I think our topic today is AI and the impact which we're all kind of curious about and we all kind of have a big question mark around. Like we kind of see it happening, but what is actually [15:51] And I think when I say what does Cisco have to say, I think Jason, you can answer for that, right? >> Yeah, absolutely. I I mean and I don't answer right now, but I can tell you for sure that one of the things I will say [16:04] you know, Cisco has done a really good job at listening over the years of what what the customers have been needing and and, network engineers and architects in this industry, especially doing what we do in [16:18] educators, that there's a lot of options out there for customers, right? And the reason being is not every customer is the same and they're they're kind of So, because of that, we have to offer the broadest amount of options for all [16:30] of our customers and sometimes that can be that can look as complexity, right? We try to figure out ways to streamline things and make it easier and need to be able to have folks who can [16:42] grow into what the network's going to do from a business perspective and why beginning, right? And you know, it's kind of funny. I remember in my brain one time and and I think everybody on this call is going to [16:55] the turn. They're going to chuckle and I remember having a conversation about playing Duke Nukem on a LAN party and Doom and Wolfenstein, Castle Wolfenstein way back in the day, right? [17:09] that's what really got me sparked into networking. I know there's a Cisco thing coming out. It was it was amazing. But the fact that we can have games playing across this thing [17:23] uh was something that was just mind-blowing to me. saying, "Well, without the network, right? The literally simply used to carry an application or some user experience over [17:37] it. That's literally all it is, right? But what at the greatest simplification of that as we move on, well, that network also happens to be the piece that is in the dead center of absolutely everything that happens, [17:52] period. So, it's also a great source of information and visibility and security and enforcement and segmentation and all these other things and uh of thinking about networking because it's there for a purpose and that [18:07] and it's always typically an application, right? Well, that application, right? Well, that application now includes security and I code, there's a million different things that we could go on into, but [18:20] I think what Cisco's done a really good job of is saying, you know, we've heard, we've listened, and now, you know, we kind of have that one place to go to rule them all, which was something that we were missing for a long time and and [18:32] that we have this this concept now, you know. And I think that that's really industry and and one of the things that Cisco says that I talk about quite a lot is in in briefings and stuff like that is is an interesting thought, but it's [18:46] it's evident that we're here already and that is that they say by by 2030, the GUI that we know of won't exist anymore. Right? It's going to be an AI interface. [18:59] So, the the idea of every single thing having its own separate GUI, that in itself is monolithic and that in itself is expensive to maintain and areas of the business to have their own GUIs and their own [19:15] infrastructure teams to handle all of that, dev teams, right? you're going to see that probably it follows suit across the industry, right? protocol stuff where I'm sure we're going to get into today uh will be the [19:29] mechanism to allow communications between different areas of the business, different tooling without having to have that many different places to go. you'll be able to see everything that's going on in your network and and we [19:43] Cloud Control, right? And I I just think that that's that's for the entire industry to realize that how we were doing it in the past that that we think it will. So, and I think [19:59] changes that we're seeing. So, hopefully that answers that question in a long >> I think it's just starting to question. We're going to unpack this like crazy. I I love the idea of like the interface we know now will not be the interface of [20:15] And you mentioned the GUI. So, like right now a lot of networking is is very GUI based because we have all these controllers that kind of abstract a lot of the API calls and the CLI that we do. But you're saying even that is going to [20:28] be abstracted. Do you foresee like a a chat interface? Is that what we're bot? Or is it going to produce interfaces for us out of thin air for what we want to see? >> It's both. [20:40] already have the chat capabilities built into it. It's already It's already there generative capabilities of a lot of these tools are what really is what captured the attention of of the industry because anybody and this is so [20:54] funny and this is exactly literally something I did for a demo. And I and I something I did for a demo. And I and I and I kept it PC and I kept it very PC that what is the minimal amount of words I can put into this generative tool that [21:07] on with my network, right? When there's something wrong and I said, "My stuff's broke." But I used a different word uh in in my own internal prompt just to see, right? [21:22] thing down. And it literally goes through and pulls out all the MCP to everything going on through Splunk and ThousandEyes and literally determines all the things that are wrong and tells me what's in into an [21:35] AI canvas and shoves it right in my face. And all I said was three words. correct thing that you would say, but that goes to the show the point that you don't have to anymore. Right? You don't have to anymore. What [21:51] you have to do is focus on why the network is important in in critical to business is going to be. Um and the time that you would have know we we laughingly joke a lot about, you [22:05] automated out of a job and stuff like that. And I I talk about it all the time you know, you can automate failure just as fast as you can automate success. Sometimes even faster, right? But at the same time, [22:19] you have to put in the context that the person who sat there and said config T interface VLAN blah switchport mode access switchport access VLAN is power over Ethernet inline blah blah that probably won't be around too much [22:31] longer, right? And the real the real idea and reason is because it you're going to specify the intent, which if y'all remember back not that long ago, intent-based networking is an industry term. [22:43] We're here. Now we can execute it. And I think AI is the the great equalizer think that it's a positive thing, too. This this is not to scare people away to say you're going to turn into, you know, the T8000, [22:57] like that. It's it's that you You now focus on the things that make you valuable. And if if not anything else, you can sharpen and hone your skill sets with some of these tools that we've never had [23:09] information. How have you get Google, right? We've Googled before, but then Googling and Googling. Now imagine you're Googling. Now imagine you just say one thing or whatever it is you want [23:23] everything and you can probe it like it like a tutor and constantly keep getting information back. My opinion now is that if you don't use that or or have means to try to learn, [23:37] you don't really have an excuse anymore. >> Mhm. So, getting to the question of will AI replace network engineers? and I asked the same question to a CEO of a company who kind of is doing [23:50] >> Sure. >> They're like, yeah, it's going to it can the stuff. It's going to it's going to be a thing where you don't even have to you just it just works. And I'm like, okay. [24:03] engineers going to do? Whatever they want. And I'm like, >> It's not that that much right. >> What what is what is what is left? What >> Yeah, you know, I think and I think that's the that's the other thing that [24:16] especially from a career perspective right now is is cuz a lot of folks are retooling too. Even even still after COVID folks are still in in mid progress of retooling their old careers lives. Uh I've got a lot of a lot of um [24:29] I mean It's not even just students, students candidates, friends, folks I about how to reinvent themselves over the years and progress, right? Um we never really caught up from the automation piece [24:43] and now we're we're using tools to to increase automation and things of that minute ago is you have to know what it does. You have to know what it's doing and you have to know how to architect troubleshoot it [24:56] and use that capability to know that maybe you don't have AI Canvas and it doesn't tell you exactly what's wrong with your network. Now, maybe you're building out that kind of capability. And And the other thing I [25:08] would say equally is we all know this and everybody out there knows this is you're still going to need to know absolutely everything we know for 30 plus years at least. Why? Because how many folks and how many [25:22] think of all the businesses you can just randomly network. And if you think that every single one of them in the entire world is going, "We're going right to AI." you've got another thing coming. They're [25:35] going to be running and sweating this gear for 30 years, still running that on IPv4, still do It's It's It's just It is what it is, right? That's why there's what it is, right? That's why there's still Windows 95 and 98 machines [25:47] attached to five five billion-dollar you know, X-ray machines and and stuff like that because it's cheaper and that is the way. So, the thing that I would think is going to be the big change moving forward is that [26:00] your responsibility's going to be a little bit different now because I don't know, mythos. Right? You know, you can't move And here's the problem. We as humans can't move as fast as we [26:15] So, we need something to help us. And that is where I think AI is going to have a role, everyone's going to have a be You can think You can still like I said, still doing that for for [26:29] said, still doing that for for so many years to come. By then, tell you that I don't think that, you know, carte blanche overnight walking robot or anything because I just I feel that that's [26:44] instinct of this. And let's be frank and honest, right? The capability to do this. If If you want to be successful in this next this next wave, we'll call it, you're going to need to be able to do [26:57] this. You're going to need to be able to articulate value to the folks who care, folks who want to give you the money for the tools and all that, because any AI tool is going to tell them that it's the best, right? [27:10] can actually rationalize that for for a business. And then even at the same time, people buy from people. People buy from people they trust. People buy from people they understand and and have [27:22] empathy with, right? If a walking automaton robot, you know, walked into your place and said, "I'm here to sell you your new said, "I'm here to sell you your new network." [27:35] door. So, I think that there's the type of roles will change. The The knowledge that you're going to need will evolve, but you'll still be necessary. And I think that everybody who's [27:47] a thing to worry about for quite a long time. >> Well, and I I think that um Jason, first off, great to meet you. I've heard your name uh many times. >> We we've met in passing a couple times [28:00] stuff over the years, but it's it was it's never enough time to actually sit >> I know. I know. And that's that's where I It's just I think we're we've been ships in the night passing. Um and I think that the [28:15] And we've had some of this discussion, but that's why it's it's great to have I think I'm going to I'm going to plant a seed of I'd love, you know, knowing that you are stepping into the big shoes of Wendell Oldham Oldham and continuing [28:29] on the CCNA journey. Um I would love to know what you see on the horizon for CCNA or if it's just like there uh you know, for 30 years. We're just [28:43] global configuration mode and we're still going to, you know, etc. etc. etc. it's great, but I want to I want to park that thought for a second because um two two things I want I want to make sure everybody catches [28:58] is when you're in the industry and things start to feel really like, "Okay, I think I got this." You start to forget what it's like to not be in the industry. And I mean I always I I tell this story because it it [29:12] connects with people, but um in Arizona we have no humidity. That's just >> Which is great. >> It's great. It's great. And so so on our houses, uh often times to save a ton in electricity, we put swamp coolers. Uh [29:25] where it's just it's the evaporative cooling uh for for homes where it humidifies it and makes it cool like for a tenth of the cost. And so so anyway, I had I had a swamp cooler in my house and it stopped working. I called I called [29:38] fix it. And like, "I'm climbing up on the roof with him. I just want to see what he's doing." And he literally he goes up to the swamp cooler. He takes the side [29:51] panel off and he's like, "Oh, there you got it." And and literally there's one >> Yeah. >> Really like one rubber belt that's going in a circle and he goes, "That's your problem. Your belt broke." Pulls the [30:04] belt out of the out of his pocket and he's like, "Snap." And he looks at me "That's a $150 trip charge. Sorry, my friend." And I'm like, >> Yeah. >> But but the thing about it is like [30:17] somebody got they I didn't even know to climb on the roof. You know, I I know there's something up there and this is this is 20 years ago. >> But I'm I'm so involved in other areas of So so when it comes to the network [30:30] everything." I think it's I mean, Chuck and I and I know Zach, I know you, of course, have been living in the AI world. So you >> Yeah. >> And you're like, "Oh my gosh." But But [30:45] realizing that right now we on this call and and all of you guys listening right and and all of you guys listening right now are like .001% of the world population that has even stepped into AI. I mean, it's like the [30:58] level that we're at. I mean, So So I'm going to I'm going to park So So I'm going to I'm going to park that out there to to say like I agree. It's going to be decades and decades and decades. Um [31:13] to show something else, but I'm going to I'm going to save that because I don't to come back to um because I just >> [laughter] >> You I mean, and the thing is the thing [31:28] >> Chuck and I were just geeking out on this this yesterday. But But like for a >> careful, Jeremy. >> I know. I know. I'm not going there, but building for probably about 6 months this platform I call Life AI, right? [31:43] >> Um And And the it's configured to where it talking Cisco here, but in a home network, hey, I've got Ubiquiti running. And it's it's to the point where like if [31:56] just go and and click on my my controller. It's like, "Hey, everything's good. You got uh you know, 77 clients in your house, 11 network devices. It's humming along. Life Life is good, right?" But if there ever is an [32:08] issue, I can simply hit this remediate button. It comes up and it's like, "Okay, do you want me to figure out what's going on?" >> Just like you're saying, like there's some stuff broken, right? Um Or [32:21] do you want Do you want to describe it? Cuz maybe And the the the thing that I I found early on is AI is really good about finding things that are by the book. But over time, like I've got WAPs down [32:34] here because they're literally on a light timer. At night, I have labs outside that come online because I'm not I'm not going to be outside in the so they go off and it's like, "Oh, alarm." And so so what I have it do over [32:47] time is I start training it. I'm like, "Oh." And and this is literally I'll use stuff typed in. But oh, yeah, I'm not going to use that one. But this is >> Sure. >> It's like, "I told you." But it's stuff [33:02] that I put in there that's like, "Hey, this is unique. You know, you won't find this on the Synology documentation. You won't find it like in in AI becomes smarter, but we're still training it." You know, there's there's thing right? [33:15] So I'll stop there for a second. >> Well, well, you're right. And the other the other piece of that is is if you think about it, you know, different ways. Like one way is that obviously the the ease of remediating [33:30] issues are going to get better. Now for Cisco, we have our own models. cases, every issue that we've ever had that has ever been with a Cisco network, everything we've ever seen with all of our customers for advanced services and [33:43] And then as any new TAC case gets created or CX gets opened up, statements of work and all this it all gets put into this model to understand and it's incredible, right? Um we have 43 years of stuff that nobody else has. True, get [33:58] it. But the concept of what you just showed and what we're talking about is able to tie different things in together to be able to have guided remediation steps, it's a troubleshooting, just access to the data in one place. Period. [34:13] That part alone makes things so much easier. And now as you start thinking about we can integrate directly with ServiceNow and then there's an issue and all the like if you think about that, it's changing [34:26] our job roles as network engineers, network operators, but that part isn't It's clearing out all the junk that makes us not effective because we don't have time to get to what we need to do to make it work. And and and I think you [34:40] granted, it would be foolish for me to say um especially as as an author and going through all this stuff and and you know, we're all making videos and doing stuff for this this same kind of thing, right? [34:54] It would be foolish to think that at some point that's been there isn't in an AI model. Right? We know it is. I know I keep getting emails about folks wanting free [35:07] stuff's hosted in all these other places for free illegally and all these other things. It's going to happen, right? it's happening. It's already happening really. We're not even It's not once [35:20] be able to ask these questions and sometimes at some point some of that knowledge that's been around for a very long time will become Right? Um at some point you're not going to [35:35] have to ask so many times how to configure OSPF, dude. It's just configure OSPF. And what what we bring to the table, I think when I say we everybody on this call collectively and in the Wendells [35:50] that it's another unique perspective from our experience and stories to help it resonate with who is listening so they can grab onto it and do the same thing. And I think that's going to be the [36:03] difference really because knowledge is knowledge and knowledge knowledge is out right? The videos have been out there. Things have been out there for a very long time. The streamlined access to it all at once is different, right? Before [36:17] this platform or that platform and go here and read this book and have virtual online books here and now you can go to any LLM you want And just say, "I want to learn this." And it'll pull from all of those. [36:31] >> I'm curious >> It's just a different way and mechanism to get to where we need to be to make ourselves successful. But then also we do have to be bright enough to realize that how we're going about it [36:44] It wouldn't be long, I don't think, in my opinion, to say that config T and go to the command line anymore. That I don't think is going to be a far-fetched thing to understand. I will think you'll need to know what all [36:59] and millions of customers who aren't making that step yet and will take that long to transition, but those are the different ways that we have to think about um how we're going to evolve our [37:11] I guess I would say reinvent ourselves to become right? >> So, um just to take a break on that. And I think So, we're talking about coding. >> I think it's even deeper and more niche to use AI to do networking things. So, it's so far from anyone being able to go, "Yeah, AI's going to take over [38:08] >> Yeah. >> Um but yeah, I agree, Jason. I think what I've seen AI do for me has been incredibly powerful. I'm like, switch and tell me what's wrong." That's great. [38:22] >> But Jeremy, to your point, I take for granted that I I knew it I knew what to tell it to do that. I knew I knew the initial knowledge to to to seed it with to for it to understand what I'm wanting. And then getting back to what [38:35] >> The empty >> I'm So, I'm I'd love to grab a couple Uh Chuck, uh Jason, I'd love to hear your Chuck, uh Jason, I'd love to hear your response to this question. AI is great, [38:49] also do it yourself. Do you agree with that? I The answer I would come back with is yo, which is yes and no. [39:03] >> Um and here's why, right? Because if you think about it that way, um you can ask AI medical questions, right? You can ask You can ask AI how to how to build a [39:17] Although I have experience in doing some of these things. You can ask it anything experience with. And at some point, you're going to have to rely on all of the sources and do the research to do do diligence to make sure [39:30] going to have to at some point rely on this It's the same as as Google, right? Because you're kind of going out and trying to find things and answers to before or haven't solved yet. Or there's an issue you've run into in your [39:43] organization or enterprise and you can't fix it and you don't It's too new or something like that. right? That you need to go out and research. think that's the problem is, you know, the human in the loop and the [39:56] these are appropriately correct and accurate that we can go down. What can we trust and what we can't? I think that to Chuck's point, right? Those dots, right? Those red dots That [40:10] back to what we were talking about before, right? It's a train. Right? Now, I've used this analogy so many times. The technology is a train, and it's particular train, I always make this joke and reference cuz he's a dear [40:23] friend of mine, John Capobianco was the conductor of this train, right? He's out You know, and he's a dear friend of mine who's brought me into a lot of this AI stuff, and I love him for it. But, um going through all of that, [40:35] the analogy I use is you're standing there, and you're like, I haven't done watching this train just fly by. I mean, it's like blistering, and you're worried tracks, and you're just watching. Oh man, it's so fast. I can't get onto it. [40:48] I can't I can't I don't know what I'm supposed to do. And then, you open up a prompt, and you type banana bread recipe. Poof, you're on the caboose of the [41:00] You are now moving with that train. Then, you say, "How do I configure a four network EIGRP network? I want to use the 10.0/24 network. I want all the router IDs [41:14] all /32, blah blah blah." Enter. And you have a lab. It could be MPLS. Oh, add MPLS to that. Add quality of service. Add enough to look at it to say, "I know [41:27] that this is accurate, and if I do make a mistake or try to paste this thing into a production environment, that at least I know enough about it to say, use that for teaching classes all the time. I don't have time to go and say [41:40] Config T, like why would I even mess with that when I know that I'm teaching you EIGRP, and I'm teaching you this one section of it? I can have that built up instantly in 1 second, and paste it into the CML and be done. Have it I can have [41:54] it generate the animal file for me, right? So, your I think it's going to make your operations and your daily organization How you organize yourself and go about [42:08] being a network engineer operator or anything like that, it's just going to better for you in that sense. And And Chuck you mentioned the amount of time it saves you. And I'm still finding I'm still finding [42:21] to stick my email and I like I'm I'm starting to use like what is this thing going to turn up and do? Is it going to go email somebody and And And I'm just kind of keeping an eye on [42:34] but there's no doubt you could see the value of the intrinsic value and speed I'm bad at being organized. So this could this helps me considerably. >> Same. I'm I'm the worst. And I'll give you an example of So I that question Is [42:48] question. >> Oh, I I unpinned it. Sorry. That was me throwing it up there. >> Uh So So So but I I I remember it. Um [43:00] uh you can't trust AI unless you know how what AI is telling you. >> So I I will also say yo. Because there are a lot of things I know I could do it. But [43:15] I'm too lazy. For example, I just posted a video of doing a a Raspberry Pi there and making it look nice. And I'm like I got to get this video up. I don't have time to do this. AI, make a beautiful dashboard, log into that Pi, [43:28] make it happen. And go watch that video. That was made with AI. And it looks But I know how to do that. I I know I could do that. And I know exactly what stupid, I'm like, "No, no, no. Yeah, like you need to do this." [43:41] On the other hand, I don't know how to program in Rust. things in Python. But I let my AI do that all the time. The answer might be I know I could do it if I really really [43:55] >> Absolutely. >> And I know enough to be dangerous and I know where to lead the AI. But like the the medical thing you brought up, Jason, I don't I don't trust AI stuff with medical things. I don't. [44:08] Sh- shut your phone off. That doesn't No. It's lying to you. That's not true. know. >> I just don't You don't know. And and and but they're using it to create vaccines. So, it's like to some [44:23] degree you're like unless I went to school for that, would And that's why you have to do enough of the research and know enough to know that everything you get back you have to question. It's so It's so important that [44:36] even if you look at the bottom of any LLM that you use, it says Basically, your mileage may vary. You know, this could be inaccurate. You could you know, just just know that uh [44:49] you have to double-check and verify. >> Let me Let me I want to Jason, this one is for you cuz with you taking on So, I'm stepping into Wendell Odom's shoes. I know Wendell it it's similar to the [45:03] when it was called Cisco Networkers, we chat like once every 5 years on something. Um and so, I know Wendell's role in Cisco Press writing a lot of the curriculum. I Um so, what does your role [45:18] with the CCNA look like moving forward? Cuz cuz I don't I don't know that Cuz cuz I don't I don't know that everybody here knows when we say you're means. >> So, um [45:32] the biggest thing that that that I know of as far as that goes is that I'm taking over the books for him. So, it will be eventually me, right? So, that be um [45:46] as the author for it. But even in addition to that, you you have to think about he's he's I mean, he's been doing this years, 10 editions. Like the guy is incredible. He's helped me learn. He got [46:01] all these things, you know? And it's hard to be when when you think stepping into somebody's shoes like that, you can't, right? So, all I can do is have my my Jason Gooley shoes next to his shoes and try my best [46:16] have my own shoes that, you know, are related to the thing and and do them you you think about how long he's been in this industry, how long he's interacted and and communicated with students from all over [46:29] the world. Uh the the colleges, network academies, high schools, all this stuff. It's going to be fed from the CCNA content that we're doing. And and and you think about how I don't know about you all, but that was [46:41] my first I want to get in the Cisco networking certification. It was the only one that was existing. It was either that NPRIE, right? And you know, and that was my first foray into Cisco into networking, right? Like, well, I [46:53] guess I did I did my CNA in 411B, uh Novell before that. Um and watched the red red snake bounce around screen a few times and then I never touched it again, Uh yeah, this is the one that I wanted to get to prove that I could do it. And [47:09] I don't know that I'll be able to do exactly what Wendell did. Um I know that I'll do the best I can as far as like candidates and I know I do that a lot now as you're probably all aware. [47:22] Um to just try to be the person who's always there for them no matter what. lot of my posts and and things that I do. It's just that know? And uh it's it's interesting as I was going through this studying and all [47:36] where and you know all these names, right? Narbik, Anthony Sequiera, Terry for sure, dude. Like, all these all these folks, right? Brian and I started Shin-Nog together. Right? I mean, the Chicago Network [47:51] Operators Group, but all that we did was just to try to help as many people because we all started in this stuff young and it burnt us up, right? And we had to do everything we could do on our own to try to get to that point. And [48:04] now, like I said, there's no there is none of that. It's all got to be in the same boat together thing and I learning environments and less stress on the mental health, which [48:17] at some point we have to talk about on this podcast. Um there for a second cuz Sorry, go ahead. No, no, no. I I'd love to what I'd love to hear is as you're looking at stepping into uh the Jason [48:31] shoes next to the window shoes. Um this question I think I've seen more often than anything else. And it's not it's not just uh oh, it went away. What'd you do? >> I'll click [snorts] it again. There we [48:46] Um so so um and it's it's not specific to CCNA, but I could see how it applies. I'm a blah, fill in the blank. [48:58] With what you're seeing with AI, should I reconsider career paths? >> Yo. >> If you're a network engineer [49:12] give up or change like because you think you're going to be just displaced by uh if you were really wanting to be a network engineer and you had the passion and love and and wanting to really go through and do that, you would you would [49:25] still be doing it. Absolutely. Um however, this goes back to the yo, right? If if you were whatever, you're delivering packages. What it doesn't matter what it is. [49:38] >> you know, it doesn't matter your your ex job, whatever this job is, and you want to break into something like networking or any other field for that matter, then that would be one of those things that this is the time to reinvent [49:52] yourself and and why I it is the it is the most important inflection time in our careers. And and what's crazy about that is we And and what's crazy about that is we all remember the internet, right? But we [50:05] were we when the internet first first got got started. But I remember at 13 years old dialing up with, you know, AOL and, you know, 300 baud modems and doing, you know, bulletin boards and all the all the all [50:20] Um but now anybody can be anything at any time period whether it's real human or not. And that is that gives you so many endless options [50:34] paralysis. So what I would want you to say what I would want you to do and consider would be to think that it is a good time to consider if you're going to switch your career for sure. [50:46] Because now you have the capabilities of doing all the due diligence and research on it instantly to see if it's something you want to do. But if anything, I would network engineer if you're already a network engineer and you're wondering [50:58] because of AI, go evaluate some of the things that are fantastic and some of them aren't exactly the best. And evaluate that that graph that you just put up with all the gray dots and those two red dots, right? [51:13] you've got so much time you can have a fully functioning career your whole life you you know, so it's dependent on what you want to do like in here. [51:26] would say to that is because I get this question so frequently and it's it's tough because it's not just about the money. a lot of folks to understand swallow. It's not just about how much money can I [51:42] make as a career. I'm going to take this thing and tune me up to be able to make possible, for sure, right? >> 100% >> But you will find yourself burnt out, unhappy, and chasing something that [51:54] All because you can doesn't mean you should. >> Hopefully that helps. What what do you think on that one, Chuck? >> Huh, so I think for many people they [52:08] they come into the choice, the crossroads for what they can do in their career, and they don't know. Like they have no idea. They don't light them up or coding or whatever it [52:20] light them up or coding or whatever it is. you could probably choose anything in IT right now. >> Yeah. >> It would require you to [52:33] move fast. It would require you to adopt AI. But I think if you become a specialist in something and you have AI backing you loop, as we keep saying, you're the human that has to answer for what the AI [52:47] you're going to have a good career. So like networking, I think that even right now, honestly, I think networking it looks a bit more shiny than develop- development and coding. Cuz it's hard It's hard to do [53:00] from an AI perspective than it is coding. >> They're They're developing all these agents for coding, not necessarily for working on that. However, I think networking is a lot [53:14] harder to do with AI. It's going to take more specialization. So I think that is probably the most shiny career out of all the IT stuff right now. That's just Obviously, I I always laugh when I say this, but [53:27] whole thing was was was given to me by DevNet and all this and stuff, and and that, right? You've got somebody here talking about who fully believed in DevNet and fully believed in all of this automation and [53:41] But here's the here's the harsh realism of it and and this is where it really gets to be reflected you have to reflect on this is reflected you have to reflect on this is that AI is built on code. [53:54] AI understands code. AI can code. And AI can code with about 99.7% more efficacy than most humans can. So, [54:08] career of what you can still have a very long career dealing with automation, development, coding, and all this and still great to know it and still great to learn it and I'm not saying it's not it absolutely is. Because you still to [54:21] you're still going to need to know what it's doing. it's doing. But if if you asked me right now, I know you know I do. If you asked me right now [54:35] from somebody who's done all the stuff that I've done with the to development in in automation programmability for the industry and all of these things, career right now, previously I was saying for sure CCNA [54:49] DevNet Associate now CCNA Automation, right? Um I would say CCNA. And you could still evolve into CCNA 80/20 rule right now because as of right now, it's pretty much the DevNet [55:03] Associate still, right? 80% network fundamentals, 20% programmability versus 80% programmability and 20% network And I still think that those two certifications are incredible. [55:19] But so is the AI Technical Practitioner. And so are some of these other certifications that are coming out that will help you utilize the tool set that will help you utilize the tool set that we're talking about. [55:32] about where you want to spend your focus, right? Um and that's just that's just being real. It's it's it's if it's gotten to the point where let's be that was very eye-opening for me and it kind of it saddened me, right? [55:47] Disney laid off their entire Marvel creative staff. All of the artists that created the Marvel and everybody on this call and is listening to knows about go back and Google it. About a month or so ago they [55:59] the entire Marvel creative team that created the entire Marvel universe and >> Wow. >> own it. And that's it. not even This is Disney, right? They were the [56:13] first to come out and smash something big like that, right? And I'm not saying it's it's good for Disney, right? [56:25] But is that good for all those artists? All the fans? It was Marvel's been around since before Disney bought them, right? And And and one >> could add one could add and when Disney [56:40] bought Marvel everything went down at that point anyway. uh man, they were good before the Disney bought it. it's just one of those things, right? >> But it is. The industries are changing, [56:53] but it was um I 100% agree with you, Jason, where if somebody asked me and this is this is why we kicked off Summer of CCNA. One of the reasons is because I was like in today's world if somebody said, "Jeremy, [57:07] I'm starting from scratch." The 23-year-old MD Dakota, right? Is starting from scratch. What would I get? I would go hands down CCNA. Because I >> [laughter] >> I'm such a jerk sometimes. So I I saw on [57:21] social media some college I can't even remember what college it was. Just just on on I think it was LinkedIn. They're like, "Teach your kids to code." I was like, "Do not teach your kids to code." Like I [57:34] I've gotten in front of audiences and I said, "I'm going to like, what are you doing?" Like catch up with Get in the red square College X. That's the >> I'm going to get on a soapbox. I'm going to get on a soapbox right there. But but [57:48] the worst thing that you could do because there are some industries that are impacted. Everybody needs a network. That's that's time. I think I think that we've all probably seen a sign like it when you're [58:02] driving home and you see the sign that says, "Chat GPT build this house." You subtitle it's like some things will take a little more time to replace, right? a home builder, right? >> Yeah. [58:16] long time before somebody says, "Chat GPT, build this network." Or have the confidence to say, "Chat GPT, the network's not working. Please fix it." [58:28] Right? Or Or it seems like we're getting Wi-Fi drops during the student testing experience. Chat GPT, can you can you you know, where it's like, "Oh, nope, sorry. Your your frequencies are jacked. You got to You got to add another whap [58:41] there and adjust." I mean, there's a whole realm in the world of networking and I I know I'm just scratching the surface there. But yeah, I if you were just getting started. Now, I I will say last thing [58:55] I'll I'll add to this is the worst thing I will I cuz we said it earlier and I I I I caught myself. The worst thing we can tell anybody is to say, "Look, when AI is in place, you can do whatever it is you want to do." [59:09] that I have I've because a lot of people are like, "Well, what do I want to do?" >> Right. >> Like coffee? Like like what? >> So, I want to present this to you guys [59:22] cuz we've we've we're talking all around AI here and all the capabilities of it, but what is the impact now going forward for a student's learning journey? And how is that going to change? Like, what are [59:34] going to be the fundamentals, the foundations that somebody really needs to go as we're progressing, especially with the CCNA and Cisco adapting more and more AI, are you guys still going to be looking [59:46] at teaching and making laying down the fundamentals, these foundations that the be successful, or is it going to lean more into AI and utilizing that to help with their learning? How How is that going to look going forward, Jason? [01:00:00] both. Let's just be honest, right? Um all these education platforms are breeding AI platforms to be able to do some of these things, right? Um create talking head videos and all of these [01:00:13] other things that are based on on on data that's already existing. for to to kind of to Jeremy's point a second ago, right? For the most part, there's it's like So, it's interesting. So, [01:00:27] to go from a chat GPT to say I wanted to do all this stuff that that might take a we're doing that today with Cisco. We have it all. It's We announced it at Cisco Live. We've been doing it, right? So, [01:00:39] that's going to be one of the things. There's going to be vendors and stuff all this, and then there's going to be everybody else just like Some folks might be doing it manually, right? It's might have a wireless LAN [01:00:54] there's all of these things that I think that that's going to be kind of that that juxtaposition between the tools and where everybody's at. There there's a Gentex capability and stuff will be there. It is there, right? Um it's just [01:01:07] there's all this this other area of it is kind of like the command line of And but they're going back to what I said earlier, I think that [01:01:19] everybody on this call is an educator, right? Everybody who's who I've worked you we've all worked with we're there because we have a passion to And I I still think that that is going to be 100% necessary because to your [01:01:32] point, to Jeremy's point even, right? Was where do I start? everything. It might give you some suggestions and the suggestions if you ask it cuz trust me I have cuz I teach this stuff [01:01:47] and so do you it's CCNA. now. I mean we're in the middle of it, right? And we're I'm taking over volume two as it as we speak. Wendell's doing volume one. We're we're working on this [01:02:00] all seen them. We know what's going in it. AI's in it, right? certain things have changed where maybe some of the coding, but now we went from for example, right? Configuration management approaches. [01:02:16] cuz that's fitting more into the CCNA automation. configure and use Ansible, which was a CCNP task. It's now in the CCNA. And the the descriptors changed. So you [01:02:30] need to know Ansible, right? So we're writing it so I'm writing right now I actually just finished it on how to without cooking any brains, how do you download this and use it without making you feel like it's such a big lift and [01:02:43] learn this stuff now when I'm still trying to learn how to how to enable, you know, security or BFD on an interface or something, right? Or or or what how how does extended traceroute and ping help me troubleshoot [01:02:57] So like there's is there such a dichotomy? That's the best word I can think of. There's such a dichotomy of of what was and is kind of simultaneously happening at the same time. And I and I [01:03:11] way of answering what you're saying, but I I think it's going to be a matter of both and it's going to be this rolling kind of Morpheus thing because just like CLI, a lot of folks are like I'm a CLI person. I don't want to If I go into [01:03:23] this GUI, I want to be able to go into the drop into CLI and configure from there because I still know this and I still need to know things, right? And I think that capability will for sure be there, right? But it's this Morpheus [01:03:35] it's trying to merge in. It's trying to The new thing is trying to eat the old happening and I think there's going to be a balance of both over time. And as this continuously evolves, right? Who knows, you know, we'll probably have [01:03:49] to put on the VR headsets and enhance our calm and all this other good stuff, >> Was that a Demolition Man reference? >> That sure was, man. I had to do it. I had to I had to drop it. Absolutely. [01:04:03] >> Um I I want to ask you to predict the future real quick. Shouldn't be too >> Um So let's say 30 years from now, a lot of what we're predicting happens. So AI has abstracted a lot of things. So [01:04:15] the the way we interact with the network is probably through just talking with an AI. When you write that book for the CCNA, What do they need to know to interact with the AI? [01:04:29] >> Well, provided there's still a book. >> Right, right. Assuming it's a book, what's going to be in the laser disc I I neuron transplant that we're going to have in our holiday? >> As as crazy as it sounds, right? [01:04:44] >> Technically I'm in sales, but I'm I my mind, you're in sales in the sense that you're working for a sales company, right? But I do a lot of the education obviously, [01:04:57] you know, in my my day job I'm I'm evangelizing to customers about how all benefit them and make your lives easier and streamline things and processes and And I think depending on what your role is going to be as this network whatever [01:05:11] it may be, engineer, architect, you know, it's going to come down to you're going to still need to be able to things. I think the why becomes more relevant almost 100% and it sounds it it [01:05:24] sounds, you know, the Simon Sinek why thing and everybody's like, oh, I've heard that my whole life, you know, but the truth is you're going to have to articulate the why because [01:05:36] the network is going to to some degree, 30 years from now, I don't know that >> Mhm. >> I mean, I I really I have 30 years from catching up. What we'll be worrying about will be [01:05:50] right? It'll be what is the application of the network supposed to be and do for we're going to use it to construct our business outflow and in operations and you know, for manufacturer, how much this we can get out by then and and all [01:06:05] of that, but I think it's it's going to be more humanized to the what you want it to be and it's going to do it. and it's going to do it. And and I think that at that point, [01:06:19] that'll evolve and then what the skill set of a network engineer will truly you're not going to be doing this by then. If we're doing this by then, I am shocked. I mean, I'm shocked. I am I'm shocked if I mean, just let's be I mean, [01:06:32] just me and I shouldn't I shouldn't even protest [laughter] too far, but I'll be shocked if this as much as we have been doing it will be >> Just because, you know, when I mentioned [01:06:44] where GUIs as we know it will be gone by 2030, I We did it. It came out in '26. Right? We've been working on it since '24. It's done. It's here. So, [01:06:58] '24. It's done. It's here. So, >> um I I I will I will uh say I have been surprised. Chuck, I don't know if if if you got this upgrade, but my Tesla ago where you can at any point as you're driving, you can say, "Hey Grok." And [01:07:12] you can just have a have a quick conversation with with AI. >> initially I was like, "Ah, so gimmicky." And like from the minute I sit down in talking to my wife. And and she said this and I said I mean like it it's like [01:07:29] I don't I don't really do that. But, that's it's like it it it it it gives you a sense of the future. I mean it's now integrated into the the you take me to this destination? Can you adjust my speed to whatever like and I'm [01:07:43] adjust my speed to whatever like and I'm like, "Wow, what a sneak peek of Hey, blah, whatever it is. Uh you know, can you can you adjust the Wi-Fi so that we've got a stronger signal in in that area over there you know or or or just [01:07:57] or it just does it. But, one of the one of the comments I I saw um that uh showed up there. I don't know if anybody has seen this book. It's an old book. Um uh but uh it's it's called it's actually [01:08:09] one of the best books. I I don't buy this book, by the way. I stuff like AppleTalk and things like Uh but, this is back when [01:08:22] certified like in the you know >> Cisco Rock. >> Yeah, and and uh it's essentially network warrior everything you need to subtitle. Um and uh [01:08:35] the the the thought I had is the reason I think that book was so uh compelling is because it was so real world. Like I know when I first started doing the stuff that I teach, I had a window of [01:08:49] like, "Oh my gosh, this is really hard." And this is like like a complete shock to the system. Um and I think that's a lot of the knowledge that's that's a lot of the knowledge that's needed in the new AI world. Is [01:09:02] I mean you guys were talking about books. I mean I've I've written a number of books and I've already gotten the I've gotten two now I've gotten two now Claude and chat GPT were both sued and [01:09:14] both settled for billions of dollars to all the authors because they literally fed pirated copies of all the books into their into their system. So if you've written a book it's in there and don't worry you'll get a few dollars [01:09:28] settlements that that >> Maybe maybe that'll be it for me then. >> Yeah no it's trust me it's spread across so many authors and like it's like oh anyway but but the but the point is it's no [01:09:44] like can you do it? But do you know it? Not >> Exactly. >> Like we we've been talking about coding all this time. [01:09:56] I haven't coded since I went to ASU for computer science. Like I that was that was my degree. I I learned to code back in my teens and twenties, right? >> that journey? >> Long ago. [01:10:09] back then and and and the thing is is as I'm see Claude code is like generate generate doing. >> Yeah. [01:10:24] how to create a development environment and staging and production and it like that's where the the network warrior if you will seems to come out. Do you have any any sense of that? For Cisco? [01:10:38] >> I I I I I do to to a degree, right? Because if you think about it um that's also going to be our jobs. Is the to articulate the things that you need to know because AI is not going to have the human [01:10:52] AI is not going to understand the politics of when a CIO wants DSCPEF for everything in his everything that he does because he's a CEO, right? know, I want home VPN in my house or this and that's a security risk that I [01:11:08] here, right? There's all of these things, you know, even even as far as through as far as, okay, guess what? You're responsible for a data center, an entire blade center system sets, the whole rack, right? Breaking EPOs and [01:11:24] cutting fingers on glass and using using shop vacs to suck out water underneath you know, there are things that aren't explained. I don't recommend doing any things that I just said, but that's why I made all [01:11:37] these jokes in some of the video courses I did because it's it's real. What is written. It's not. It's what we talk about. It's what we try to the to mentor and then guide you through because [01:11:51] there there comes a time when you're going to walk into something a situation prepared for at all. Let me tell you what, still happens every day. Everybody. You're going to walk into a customer that hits you with something [01:12:05] you're like, "Whoa." And then you're going to walk into something else. And how you react to that is literally going to be the the definition or delineation of how much longer of a career you're going to [01:12:17] Um and and I I just think that how you conduct yourself and how you can comes from understanding truly what these things are doing. joke about, you know, jumping on the train and all these things, but [01:12:33] comfortable with, and this is something I there How many out there hate change? people? Right? [01:12:48] You're going to have to. And it is the hardest thing to learn. It is the hardest thing to learn. Um, it's how to work with others. And and and because it's not all about individuals anymore, it's almost more [01:13:00] about the broader collective uh to make all of us work together to make this whole spinning rock do things better for for everybody who's on it. And it's crazy to think that we've gotten to a point where [01:13:12] everything that we've seen on TV and in the internet, we don't know we we Is it real? Is it fake? Deep fake started with the deep fake Tom Cruise videos. You know what's up. You know what I'm saying? [01:13:26] side of the Burj Khalifa with nothing on my hands. Wait a minute. That's AI. You things because as as silly as it is, you have the ability to find ways to keep constantly making yourself relevant. And I think [01:13:42] on as educators in in this industry because and and foster through the next generation because like you said, CCNA, right? You're still going to have to know what the OSI model is and all [01:13:55] these good things. There's so much flying at you at all times. You almost need a filter to kind of figure out what you need to allow in and what might be noise anymore. So, um very [clears throat] [01:14:09] one. That was great. >> Yeah, I um I heard this thing uh it's kind of like a a a recent trend on uh social media, but it was like if you like anybody right now, anybody [01:14:23] can [clears throat] code anything. Like if you get access to the the most basic you can write something and that's pretty cool. >> But if you if you take someone with coding skills who has a history in [01:14:36] development and they understand that and you give them the same AI tooling, >> Absolutely. >> Things that you've never even like how did you do that? And that's what I see. I think and kind of just bringing home a [01:14:50] It's the people who have the knowledge of what's actually happening. It's the people who have that expertise they can wield AI in a way that no one people can jump in and probably do networking with AI. [01:15:04] Not the way a not the way a networking admin can. No, no, no. And that's what people are going to pay for. It's the expertise with AI, not someone who has through a network configuration. Mhm. That's not going to happen. [01:15:16] and the knowledge. >> And you know that chart that you you shared earlier with all the like 3.5 million all the blocks, right? >> I would love to see that same chart just for Google. Like how many people utilize [01:15:29] Google to like the full ability that that Google has because I guarantee you not everybody is you know Google dorking, right? And that has been like a huge skill for an IT professional for years [01:15:42] upon years. And you know still people don't know or utilize Google to at the best of its ability. And chat GPT and all the other thing. Just [01:15:55] >> You know what got me a few weeks ago and when you put that chart up there it kind of smacked me in the head a little there is also a chart out there that looks just like that. [01:16:09] That tells you how many years you have to live. And how that there's only this amount of blocks in your entire life, in your entire career. This much is taken up by sleep. This much is taken up by work. [01:16:23] the car all day, right? There's all of this stuff and it really just lays out this stuff and it really just lays out for you that when you really look at it And so when you think about how you apply yourself, you have to try to do [01:16:39] is successful and have the longevity to to take care of yourself, your family, your loved ones, and all this. And, you know, just just as easy as you you could learn doing these things is just as easy as [01:16:53] you can get lost doing these things. So, I think that's just another thing to to keep in mind that it's great to do all of these things and automate all and educating, but it's also good to get up and go outside. Spend some time with [01:17:06] friends and family, too, right? Um balance it, because what I'm saying generative Well, it doesn't matter which one. I use Perplexity all the time. It has the absolute best voice. It's fantastic, you know. And to to put a to [01:17:22] put a point in that would be something to kind of open your mind a little bit is there's an article out there that Perplexity um I'm I'm sorry, not Perplexity, Gemini. Gemini [01:17:35] >> Mhm. >> That Apple and Google got together and did. It's going to be the new Siri. And I And I will tell you your career in your career mind here is that [01:17:48] if two of the biggest phone manufacturers in the world came together for for voice yeah, the phones don't mean anything. [01:18:03] yeah, the phones don't mean anything. Data is gold. Data is the new oil. Data, everything that everybody out there has is the new commodity. That's the new thing that is for sale. [01:18:15] going through and doing all of these things, because the bottom line is things that can't be connected, the better and more beneficial it could be. [01:18:29] there's other aspects of AI and and and and this that might not be at so much on a positive side. So, just just keep that balance, okay? >> That's why we got to go all local AI, get a phone, shut off all the stuff. [01:18:43] >> Yeah. I I'm I'm digging the basement. You're all invited. We'll start stockpiling rice and everything else. Um so >> [laughter] [01:18:56] >> [laughter] >> Uh bring COVID back again. Um so we got >> I want to I want to actually throw a question up there that I know sounds funny. Um but but um so first first comment on the question [01:19:11] below is no, I did not use punch card. That was a few years before my time. But just like Jason, I did get into the world of technology uh in BBSs. I had a Commodore Amiga 1000 [01:19:25] and I actually at 10 years old, I know that sounds stupid. It sounds stupid to me. Uh I actually ran my own BBS. I took over my my parents bought me my own back then. I had a Practical Peripherals 14.4k [01:19:40] people were dialing into my house at night. Why? Cuz I wanted I had I I BBS. It's a bulletin board system, pre-internet, right? Uh called Amie Exchange. And why? Oh oh oh oh I was like I thought I was [01:19:56] just I was like I got cut off. Uh it was it was a pirate BBS. I mean back in I was a 10-year-old software pirate. I was after getting more games and that was the fastest way that I could get games for my Commodore Amiga computer. [01:20:11] Um and so the funny thing is I learned technology because I was trying to solve problems. I'm like, okay. Like and and and that's where I wanted I want to use Shelby's no, I didn't do punch cards. But but um [01:20:26] I'm I want to bridge it right into uh lost lost losted runner their question. What is the road map from CCNA to getting a job? And I would I would say can you solve problems? Like [01:20:41] at the end of the the the funny what I we haven't announced this yet, but I'm going to I'm going to do a soft announce right now. Right after summer of CCNA, announced it, but it's it's going to be something to the perspective of uh [01:20:57] getting a job. Yeah, like there'll be a fun way what do you name it? But but the that like the whole series we've already started recording the videos. Um the whole series starts off with do you know what a job is? [01:21:11] A job is a company which is just a whole bunch of people that are like >> [laughter] >> Like like we've got problems. There's so many so many problems. Will somebody please help us? And I'm going to like [01:21:25] when when you quote unquote get a job I mean from from from got a job. From a company's perspective like they're kind of making a bet. They're like, I just got someone I hope [01:21:39] can solve my problems. Right? Like I sure hope. And so so the road map from CCNA from learning to getting a job I would answer it and and I Zach Chuck, Jason, I'd love to hear your perspective. I would say [01:21:55] can you now use the knowledge you gained in the CCNA to start solving some of the problems that companies have? And do you even know the problems yet? And that's CCNA. Is we're like, there's problems. There's [01:22:08] that, right? >> Okay, the floor is yours, please. I'd love to hear your thoughts. >> You know you hit it 100% on the nail on the head, right? Is and and and here's this is the perfect analogy for this and [01:22:20] this is why why the why is so important, right? Um customers have with software subscriptions? It's adoption. It's adoption, right? New features, new [01:22:35] have an EA to incorporate take on new technologies because they the business needs these technologies to run more it can solve for the business, right? >> Mhm. [01:22:48] have the the time, staff, or skill set to adopt it. never fully gets realized. So you're kind of behind. Similarly, in what what [01:23:00] thing is if you go through the We we've heard that we've heard the you hear this out there is paper just basically go through and get the certifications, right? [01:23:14] right? You can still probably go through, get the certification, and have a paper certification, and not necessarily know how to apply any of it or what the problems could be, and it's asking those technical probing discovery [01:23:26] questions. This is sales 101 kind of thing, right? Um but at the same time it's it's it's not even sales. If you're an engineer and you're going to try to solve a problem, you have to ask the stakeholders technical probing discovery [01:23:39] are the issues you're trying to solve? That's how you understand what the relevancy is of the impact that's happening from the issue that solve for them, to take the pressure off of them. And how it impacts their [01:23:53] Because frankly, I mean let's be honest. The business only cares about the business. Every business only cares about the business, right? Because every other business is a competitor. And to some degree you have to make sure [01:24:06] that you have route to market faster than everybody. AI could potentially cause a lot of Kodaks out there. And when I say not Kodak, Kodaks, Kodak, like, right? The camera company that's gone [01:24:19] that quick because somebody innovates something faster. And I think to your what the problems are, how to apply them to a business, understanding the vertical that that business is, and maybe you want to do health care, maybe [01:24:32] talk to the customers and your management and your team and your leaders or whatever it is in the customers or businesses Otherwise, you're not going to be successful. You almost become a generic [01:24:47] CCNA versus one that can know how to apply to the business and skill set, why they would pick you over the next CCNA that applied for the job. So, I think that is an incredible segue to let let these other two good [01:25:00] comment on that. >> [laughter] >> Well, I think Jason and Jeremy, you guys hit such a a cool idea. we've been trying to answer, like do we have a future? Is there a future [01:25:13] for network engineers? What's the job market going to be like for IT people? >> Question is, are there still going to be problems to solve? >> Yep. >> And it doesn't like right now the CCNA [01:25:29] those problems. Will that always be the thing we need to learn to solve the problems? I don't know. Maybe not. It doesn't matter. When that time comes, we will learn the next thing we need to solve the new problems. That's it. We're [01:25:42] problem solvers. We're providing value. That's as simple as it is. So, I'm not >> No, I'm not worried either. >> That's the thing is like you got to think it's just every if you jumped into [01:25:54] this career, you better be supportive of change. career you could possibly join. It's going to change frequently. like to be able to reinvent yourself and learn different things and maneuver with [01:26:09] technology, let's be honest, right? Before I was I was at Cisco for, oh gosh, 12 11 and 1/2 12 years. I was gone for a brief period of time. There was a for a brief period of time. There was a rounding error. It came back, right? [01:26:21] My role even changed. I went from I was just doing world I was just doing enterprise networking, right? For 9 years. And of course, all education, training, teaching out of it as well internally and and externally. [01:26:34] But now, yeah, I got to know data center, AI, you know, campus collab like it's it's just because there is no lines anymore. There's no more silos anymore. You can't have silos anymore and expect [01:26:46] AI speeds security threats. things fixed when you're trying to troubleshoot stuff. That doesn't exist You can't. The time will not allow you [01:26:59] to do that. Especially and we didn't double click too far into Mythos and but like Anthropic come out with models like Mythos and there's Daybreak by, you know, um open AI and all these things. [01:27:11] These are tools and models to find vulnerabilities in software. intentions. Absolutely. To help us solve and harden our our our devices, our environments, [01:27:24] we don't we don't run into too many of the nefarious, right? If it's built, it's getting out. If it exists, it will get it it is life has a way. It is Jurassic Park, right? So, what did that do for us? And that [01:27:40] basically told us that you don't have any time to waste to patch anymore. You can't wait 5 years to update your switching and your routing environments instantaneously. And it's not a matter of if, [01:27:54] happen. If you don't think that an AI model can go out there and scan the entire internet and every single IP address that's publicly available and vulnerability instantly, you're wrong. [01:28:08] protect against that? Well, that's where we start learning these school skills and and and tool sets that we get in in school or in classes and and whatnot to things like systems. It's a little bit different, [01:28:22] OSI model and how these threats get attacked, but you also need to know that cycle to fix some of these things and upgrade those switches or get onto those latest CVEs and get those all patched or vulnerabilities, I should say, so [01:28:36] everybody knows what it means, right? You're at risk. And you're at risk because it's spy versus spy forever now. access to the same tools that we have to try to thwart them. Luckily, we have 43 [01:28:50] us a little unique leg up on stopping and solving for AI and security instances and issues, but it's forever going to be this. fight it or hack anymore. It's just going to be this forever. [01:29:04] So, you have to understand how that works. It's it's the new organized >> Mhm. >> It's not a joke. So, think about that help you build yourself up to understand that [01:29:19] you just need to know how these things work and you can be very very very valuable in this industry. right? Like that's what we always hear. It's going to fix it all. It's going to [01:29:31] do it all for us. But at the end of the day, like what's the biggest challenge that an organization faces? It's the end user. And AI is still not going to be user is going to have. Like you mentioned kind of earlier, you're going [01:29:44] and they're going to present you with a problem and that you've never seen before. And more than likely, AI probably never seen that before either. But you're never going to account for, and I mean this in in the most kindest [01:29:56] way possible, but like the stupidity of humans, right? Like AI cannot account for it because AI is constantly thinking in ones and zeros and not accounting for the just craziness that us as human beings can implement into an [01:30:10] organization, into these these technical issues that we're running across. And at the end of the day, with AI coming into this, at the other side of that prompt prompt, who's putting it together. [01:30:23] I mean, it it it that's that's the greatest that's it's a really good way think about it, I mean, automation was supposed to take away human error or you could have repeatable code, move a lot faster. It's basically with scale, [01:30:37] speed, and reducing human risk human error risk. That's that's automation. AI right? But, the thing to the thing to think about and consider to your point you still have to know why you're using it and what you're trying to do. And you [01:30:52] otherwise, you just you're you're You could be At that point, if you don't know why you're doing something and you going to impact something, and you don't know the back drop on it [01:31:06] functionally at that point, you're not even doing the bare minimum of what you perspective, right? So, you will probably be replaced with AI at this is the thing that you need to kind of keep in mind. It's it's an evolution. [01:31:20] it's a This is so weird. It is a very fast evolution, but also a very slow drawn out evolution And it that's that's so the whole CLI versus GUI thing, right? Um but, [01:31:36] it is that we're we're all limited by our imaginations at this point. Um and then once we get to the point where these things have taken on just to the point where the efficacy is so good and it it [01:31:48] it can't it can't make the mistakes. And it does that, well, that's that's a different conversation, right? Cuz then I think it's it's folks might evolve to the folks who learn about how to sell these systems [01:32:00] to folks who need them, right? I mean, there's always a job and a role and a something out there for you. And and and I do want to tell you this because and but I want to make sure that I double click on it just a little bit is [01:32:12] if you try to just on your hand it just randomly name businesses. Just just I be whatever. You're just randomly naming these businesses. that are out there. It's impossible. Right? [01:32:26] Every one of those has a network. Now, the level of complexity in that word is totally varied, right? Cuz everything's unique. But, how many CCIEs are there out there in the world? [01:32:38] a number perspective. There's not There's roughly probably half half and a half of that for like what? 35,000 40,000 certified technically active Give or take cuz folks age out, folks retire, [01:32:51] folks do different things, right? They go emeritus, whatever it may be. out there? A lot more than that. There's going to be a demand forever for that level, that skill set, those those [01:33:05] who can do it. There's always going to be a demand for it. currently. So, if you're thinking about being you're going to be programmed out of a job or you're not sure if this is the [01:33:18] right career for you, it's all BS and you should do it. >> [laughter] >> from the perspective of like, you know, I'm a business owner, I hire people, and I'm I wouldn't consider myself pretty [01:33:31] pretty on the edge of the cutting edge of AI. I would I would much rather hire someone who knows AI to do something than just >> Yep. >> That that's the dream situation is to [01:33:44] have like hire someone like, "Okay, I I need a network engineer. Do you use AI you automate a lot of this? Awesome. I'll probably keep you forever cuz the AI agents. I don't have have worry about it." People want people, they also [01:33:58] want to benefit from AI. Be the person that can be the person for them that Yeah. And one of the things that I say all the time is the same exact concept but was was with programmability, right? Let's be honest. Let's be truly honest [01:34:11] right? It's all two or three of us out there, right? If you could automate yourself out of a job, you will never need to find another Cuz every business in the world wants you to go and do the same thing for them [01:34:25] next, the next one next, to the next one next. Because job to to truly be not necessary anymore, you will never need to look for to hire you to do the same thing over and over again because [01:34:38] there's not enough of you out there. So, get up you got to relish in the fact that there there is very stable ground in this in this industry to stand on. And obviously, even Cisco had to reinvent ourselves, right? [01:34:51] But at the same time it was we've been you know, we've been doing necessary. It's going to be necessary for for a very long time if not forever. you going to get the You know, I guess at some point maybe AI will figure out [01:35:06] how to telepathically transport photons, you know, from from from LA to Hong Kong or something like that so we can That's our new WAN, light WAN or something. I have no idea, but highly highly doubtful in [01:35:20] >> Don't you guys have quantum networking at Cisco already? already? >> We do. We actually have our first >> Yeah, there you go. >> It's insane. And every switch that we've [01:35:32] made, even all the 9300s and everything, all these different even the I and the say IE switches, but the the manufacturing plant floor switches and uh industrial switches, they have uh post-quantum [01:35:45] uh cryptography to block quantum threats, come out with that. And and and it's just if that's out, it just makes you think that that is an issue, right? That's an [01:35:57] You don't just come up with this for no reason like I'm going to put post That means you take AI and quantum computing and you jam those two things together, you're going to have a whole lot of a [01:36:11] whole lot of capabilities in the good and bad realm uh at the same time, coming down to. Um it's exciting. It really is probably Let's be honest. It's the freaking most [01:36:23] been for a long time. I mean, a long long time. Software defined WAN and software defined campus and software defined anything was like another big bump like [01:36:35] controllers. But if you think about this and we can all probably agree. Jeremy's know, like we've all Shelby's been around. We've all been doing this for a It seems like every 5 10 years. It's typically about every 10 years, but [01:36:48] about every 5 10 years centralized, distributed, on prem, cloud. Automation, AI. It It It's AI. AI in the cloud. Agentic. Oh, dude, cloud. What happens? I'm going to [01:37:02] tell you a story what happens. I met with a customer back. Cannot name the customers obviously, Um but a legitimate thing was they're needing AI to to advance and evolve and [01:37:17] every other customer is and they're taking they're taking strides. They have full AI teams and stuff to take a really good swing at this, right? workflows. And then for everybody on the call or on the call on the on this. Um [01:37:33] agentic is just a mechanism of saying I want other areas of softwares and connect with other ones. It's basically a list of context of what I want it to do and API calls, right? At the most simple [01:37:45] basicest form, right? Most basic form you can see is basic. I'm an educator. No, um but but if you think about that, right? It's It's to be weren't possible before without involving the need of having to have [01:37:58] somebody physically in all those locations and doing it for you. value. How many How many outputs am I putting out on my manufacturing plant floor on this shift versus this shift? And I need [01:38:11] that to be put into planning and automation and strategy teams and Because is that going to warrant us opening, you know, expansive or elastic plant plant floors or lines during [01:38:25] build up a whole new plant floor? There's all of these things. your imagination to be able to connect them now with the Gentex AI. So, what happened was they started that process on prem. It worked amazing. [01:38:39] move faster. We're going to put some of that up in that I don't want anybody to to But there's a cloud provider we're going to put this up and then it's one of the big three three letters, right? Okay? [01:38:52] >> Oh, I know who it is. >> you all to tell me randomly. I'm going to ask each one of you. No kidding. the first year? >> Oh, first year for a a plant? [01:39:05] customer, right? Um knowing they're doing a Gentex and it's now a connecting their cloud to their on prem. And and I'll I'll I'll I'll I'll I'll tell you if you're high or low. [01:39:19] 7 million? >> 7. >> I That was Zach. That was Zach. >> Okay. Who else? want to go 3 million. >> Okay. Okay. [01:39:33] >> Three. >> Just 3 million, huh? 230 million dollars. >> [laughter] >> 30 million dollars. >> 2 years in a row already. [01:39:50] That's half a billion dollars. Luckily, large company. You're bankrupt. >> And that's the I think I think that's So [01:40:04] >> Sure. Sure. >> But that's I think what you're bringing is So I want to I want to hit these last two questions >> Sure. >> like that. Um so uh [01:40:17] Ridge Ridge uh is saying, "Do you not think the young engineer coming through will lack the troubleshooting skills as AI I would say the young engineer coming through can [01:40:30] learn to use AI. I wouldn't call it a crutch. I mean, it's the same thing like >> Google it. >> Like if we could rewind maybe 15 years uh and we were doing a live stream, I I bet you we'd be asking, you know, uh [01:40:45] Rich, don't take this wrong way, but but you might be asking, "Do you think that will will have Google be a crutch for them?" >> And and I I'd be you know, and if I were to answer that back then, I'd be like [01:40:58] uh actually, yeah. And I think it'll be a great crutch. I think being able to Google things keeps you from having to keep all that stuff like to to memorize all like I can I can And And And what has happened over the years is Google [01:41:11] it. Come on, Google Like it's become a verb. That's become normal. >> Absolutely. >> I think AI it is is like Well, didn't you bounce that off of AI? What did you try two engines or one? Like Like [01:41:24] Google it Like to Google something, you have to have a direction that you know you're going. And And some knowledge there. So But will it be a crutch? We We we could argue crutch for a long time, but but [01:41:37] I've been I've been sitting on this question for so long. And like where where they're saying, "Do you want to solve problems or create what people really want?" This So, going back to the question before where it's [01:41:49] like, "Well, what am I going to do?" And somebody saying, "Well, you can do >> I don't have anything if I don't have any direction. >> Right. Here's the cool reality though of what's coming. [01:42:02] what's coming. IT has always been seen as overhead to a >> It's not You don't want to be that, but we are because we're just a cost. Like, we don't really create anything. We just make sure that, you know, things get [01:42:18] something new is coming out. Oh, the network's down. I can fix that. But But we're not producing something the company needs. We're just keeping them >> Like, you know, if you work for a corporate environment, at the Christmas [01:42:32] bonuses. You guys like, "Good job, IT department. You helped us >> Yeah. >> I was making a sale and you brought my connection back up so that I could like like you're just like Yeah, I mean, [01:42:46] booth. >> [laughter] nobody even cares that we're there until they hear the squeal, right? >> What's that guy do anyway?" Like that's you, but until now. And that's where I [01:43:01] want to like we'll end on this is like now with AI in your back pocket, you can move from I'm a cost to like, "Hey, I just created something. I couldn't do this before." But the window from [01:43:14] creation to reality has been shh closed with AI. >> To where you can move from I have a cool idea to literally I can execute on that idea really fast. And that that's where I'm coming back to you, Jason, where [01:43:28] you're like, "What a time to to alive." You know, it's a like this is we are in >> You know, and and if you were to ask me to answer that question just at face value, right? It's the latter of the question. [01:43:44] Because if you think about it, if that those those people are a business and they want you to come and alleviate them from troubleshooting, help you make IT instead of the cost center the innovator, it shows that we [01:43:58] Look at all these cool things you can do now, but we never had the capability of doing before. That is where your your career's going articulate that. That's kind of what I was saying is you're going to have to [01:44:10] that uh it's exciting. I'm super excited to see where it's going to go because I believe that we're all we're all on this it's time you hop on if you haven't hopped on already to start doing [01:44:25] know, once you jump in and you start doing anything, ask one it ask it any Once you do, you're on, right? And then what you do is you keep evolving yourself and learning things and then you're doing [01:44:39] learning how do you build training and and context and and agents and all this, It's all you're doing is you're you're you're moving and then guess what? people are just because this train because this train, [01:44:54] >> [laughter] >> Right. The theme of this this whole call you know what? We're living in the best time ever. And you're going to hear You're going to hear like all the job market's going like IT guys are going [01:45:08] away, network engineering, don't even look at that. No, no, no, no. Now it's >> Yep. >> I might be over optimistic, sure. I >> You need to be. >> And the more you adopt the attitude, the [01:45:20] doesn't I don't care what they think.
