[00:01] Toyota, Land Rover, or Mercedes? Well, we're gonna find out by thrashing them until they die. FIRE. FIRE. >> Did some just break my car? [00:14] >> Did some just break my car? >> Which one will last the longest? on the toughest off-road course I've ever attempted. And at this point, none or put back on the road. This is their last chance to go out in a blaze of [00:30] glory. So, what we've done is tethered each of these cars to this huge pole. in them, start their engines, put them in gear, make sure the traction control then we're going to thrash them and keep on thrashing them until something [00:44] breaks is to do with the transmission, what we'll do then is put them into neutral and just hammer the throttle and keep the engine on the red line to see how long it can live for. The car that dies last wins. It's as simple as that. [00:57] dies last wins. It's as simple as that. Okay, guys. Can you start your engines? Okay, guys. Can you start your engines? Drivers, take up the strain. Go. [01:11] A lot of spinning. Yeah, I'm seeing smoke. doing. Oh, that doesn't smell good. Whatever that is. Oh, that's a lot of [01:23] Whatever that is. Oh, that's a lot of smoke. [laughter] [01:40] >> What's this? What's going on? Oh, transmission is overheating. Oh, Matt's got some wheel spin going now. Reset suspension height. No, I can't. torque converter. I'm not even sure the wheels are turning. Something's [01:54] wheels are turning. Something's happening to mine, guys. Can I get into third? >> Transmission oil temp warning. Are my [02:08] in smoke. >> WHAT IS HAPPENING TO YOUR CAR? ARE you even in gear, Nick? lights come on now? >> My engine's not overheating. I'm sort of [02:21] on the rev limiter. Sam's one tire is turning very slowly. I think mine's blown up by now. It's had problems with its prop shaft AND EVERYTHING. OH, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, FIRE. >> Don't panic. Don't panic. [02:41] getting out. Toyota has left the chat. >> The Toyota's died for No, this is not >> The Toyota's died for No, this is not true. [02:59] starts again. My car is shaking quite a lot, and I've got frequent transmission redlinining? >> No, it's at 2 half th000. Sitting then. I think we need to be pinging off the limiter, my friend. [03:14] my engine temps now, if I'm honest. >> Oh god, you're just smoking me out. I >> Oh, it's really climbing now. My temps have gone way up at 120. [03:29] >> Something broke on my car. It's still wanting to go, but it's broken. neutral. Put it in neutral. >> Right. And so, should we just pin the accelerators and see what happens then? >> Hold on. My car has died. Oh. [03:53] >> I'm going to get my car back into position and then I'm going to put a position and then I'm going to put a rock on the throttle pedal. [04:18] >> So mine it was I think it was gearbox oil coming out of the dipstick that go and start it again. L. >> Yeah. [04:40] like we need to start the Land Cruiser like we need to start the Land Cruiser again. All right, I'll do it. [04:53] YOUR LIFE. >> SO, it's running. >> Is that a red line? >> Yeah. >> See, I knew it wasn't the engine. >> What a beautiful sound this is. [05:05] could do with a nice picnic now. >> Yeah. I'm only at 80 um degrees. >> Is the disco still going? >> Disco's dying. >> Disco's dying. >> The disco's dying. Oh. Oh, [05:26] >> Is it still running? Sam, can you check the throttle pedal? Make sure it's down enough. [05:40] >> Is the Land Cruisers are still running? >> Yeah, it's doing a very funny noise. Oh >> Yeah, it's doing a very funny noise. Oh dear. >> Hey. Yeah. Sir, do you reckon mine will start [05:54] Yeah. Sir, do you reckon mine will start again? I'll try now. the Land Rover is out. I thought it was winning. Then in the end, it's out [06:07] first. Although the Land Cruiser was off for a long time. >> It was on fire. >> Land Rover actually pulled through. So strong. It snapped with a scrub. Also, I noticed some coolant shoot out of it at [06:20] one point. Do you know what? I think cuz you're still on the post. I think you go you're still on the post. I think you go for it. [06:35] It'd be terrible if you crashed into the side of my car, Sam. So, don't do that. No, don't. Don't. No. Oh, you gave me a little kiss. I don't think your torque converter is very happy. Is that in gear? [06:50] >> Oh, here we go. >> Yes. What's happening with the Land running. >> Nothing's moving. Your torque converter >> Nothing's moving. Your torque converter is just getting hot. Oh, temps are up. [07:11] >> Yes. There we go. >> It'll be fine. Oh, it smells bad. >> M. That's coolant, isn't it? >> I've never smelt that before. >> Is a Land Cruiser still going? Yeah, >> but not like the Mercedes. [07:26] >> How long do I reckon we can stand around just looking at this for >> an eternity later? [music] >> If you want a reliable engine, get >> If you want a reliable engine, get yourself a 2.7 from an old Mercedes ML. [07:39] yourself a 2.7 from an old Mercedes ML. >> If you want a reliable car, full stop. >> A million owners, >> been written off. Dodgy car vertical >> Yeah, perfect. The Discovery lasted way longer than I thought and it had some [07:53] serious abuse. Surprised at the Toyota not even turning its wheels. >> Yeah, I think that gearbox is worse than we thought. >> Yeah. >> Sue in many ways. [08:06] well. Actually, >> don't really want to breathe too much of >> I feel like we need more revs from that Toyota cuz it's just cheated. >> It's gone back down to 80°. I reckon this is the exact same test [08:20] that Mercedes engineers did. Oh, >> I think I've lost drive. >> Yeah, that that's indeed. >> Oh, wait, wait, wait. There's smoke happening now. >> I mean, my temps are still solid at 85°. [08:33] >> I mean, my temps are still solid at 85°. >> I don't believe that therma the >> I don't believe that therma the >> Is this the end? LOOK AT THAT. LOOK AT THAT SMOKE. OH, [08:48] >> how does it do it? I hate to say it, but I think you have bought the best car. >> Yeah, >> definitely is a road car. Nicest to >> Yeah, >> most reliable. That is unstoppable. [09:00] >> Yeah, >> but the engine's good. genuinely just hot. >> You reckon it'll cool down and be fine? >> I think the Land Cruiser might as well, you know. The Land Cruiser though, [09:12] >> it didn't have enough torque to spin the wheels. So, it was just straining against that torque converter the whole time. That's maximum load on the engine. And it just got so hot it caught fire. >> ML didn't [music] I can hear the Land [09:24] Cruiser. It's in the background. >> That's a different smell again. aren't we? >> It is. It's different components smoke. It's burning through different things. [09:37] >> Yeah. To tell you the truth, the Land Cruiser, the transmission on that wasn't they say? >> If you want to get somewhere, take a again, get a Land Cruiser, >> which is not true, is it? You can't even [09:50] So, I wonder if your transmission's cooled down a bit. Have a look. [10:08] So, see if you can start my car cuz you see the magic touch. >> Matt, we're running. Oh, did Sam just break my car? [10:27] does it not work anymore? Yours does. Yeah. So, it's running >> Land Rover has entered the chat. >> I can't believe the Discovery is going >> Well, it's had a 2hour nap. That's why. Are these cars actually going to die? [10:41] >> An eternity later. >> Do you know what we should do now? off-roading. >> Yeah, that's a great idea. >> So, the challenge now is can we actually drive these cars? [10:56] drive these cars? Oh my god. >> That's incredible. >> How tough is this? [11:16] does it have reverse? >> No. >> No. >> I have no gearbox. [11:35] >> Does anyone need a lift? I'll recover you with my discovery. The Land Rover's >> It did have a rest, but the Toyota had a rest for a long time as well. tow you out. >> Matt, you're going to have to help it [11:48] >> Matt, you're going to have to help it backwards. >> I haven't got long because I got an oil warning light. I don't know why. [12:03] >> Oh dear. >> Oh. >> I'll do it. I'm not scared. Oh. [12:28] >> it'll start again. >> We'll find out if Les is right. This will start in a bit. And it drives. If I had to go home in it, I could. drive that home. [laughter] We've got engine oil temperature sensor, [12:43] crankshaft position sensor, clutch temperature too high. It's all fine. temperature too high. It's all fine. >> A few moments later's going to have no >> I don't know if this is going to work. [12:59] >> Right. Are you ready, Nick? >> Yeah. >> I'm going to try and drive on THE RUTS. COME ON, [screaming] MATT. [13:17] >> AH, that's a problem with having no steering. I guess the Toyota was veering towards a huge ditch. If my poor Land Rover didn't have enough power to drag Nick across safely, he could fall in and possibly roll. So, rather [music] than [13:29] our rescue vehicle so they could try to pull it free instead. But this meant my way out was [music] completely blocked. If I wanted to tow some stricken Mercedes back to base, I'd have to take an even more [music] challenging route. [13:49] It's worth a try. I think I might get stuck in these ruts. [14:07] >> Is Matt stuck? You had one job. >> Oh no. What did you do? >> I think I got it stuck. >> Brilliant. This was not the best way to come, was it? [14:43] the Toyota back to base. So, they moved on to dragging Sam's knackered Mercedes out of my way, which meant I had one final chance to rub salt into the wound. I love doing that. Right then, Sam, let's see if I can tell you out of here [14:57] with my legendary discovery. Keep Keep it going. Keep it going. [15:15] Got to stay on the ruts, not in them. Otherwise, we'll be in trouble. [15:31] these cars did incredibly well. I was amazed by the Mercedes' engine to just keep on redlinining like that. But overall, you can't fault this Discovery cuz it's the only one that can get itself and the others out of here. [15:46] Forget what everyone says about Land Rover reliability. In this particular Rover reliability. In this particular instance, I've managed to bag myself an instance, I've managed to bag myself an absolute belter. [15:58] [laughter] Consider yourself rescued. did, give it a like. There is one question though. That Mercedes engine was so strong. Does that mean that Mercedes actually builds the strongest [16:10] engines? To find out, you need to watch that video there because I answer that very question. Thanks for watching and I'll see you next
