[00:00] Blizzard actually did it, and I was there. Guys, we saw Gbay at BlizzCon. We did. If you guys didn't hear, we met him. He is, in fact, very tall. He's like 6'5", or something. [00:14] He did wear the shirt. Actually, the first night I met him, he wasn't wearing his cool shirt. I called him out on it. I was like, bro, you're wearing a regular shirt. But apparently, he came straight from the airport, so I'll have to come to Slack. Gbay, very nice dude. [00:27] Very nice meeting you. It was like the exact same as like watching his YouTube videos in person. You can just like, it's just like contagious positivity. I love it. [00:39] Well, yeah, I saw him again in the other shirt. And yeah, I mean, it was a very busy weekend, but it was solid. Did he even know you? Yeah, he actually did know. He actually did know. He was like, we were talking about the react and how much I like the content. [00:52] and I told them I was not just a fan, but I told them I was a super fan of the content and that was pretty much it. That was pretty much it. So I went to BlizzCon this year as perhaps the newest Warcraft fan there is [01:05] because I had heard that Blizzard were about to announce something really exciting, the long-rumored and much-anticipated Classic Plus. Well, it's been out for ages by now and while there are original classic versions of the game [01:18] that are frozen in time available to play, as well as a retail version that could be a whole new game with all the changes it's had over the years, people have been asking for a new version of Classic for a really long time. [01:30] An old-school Rainscape-style server where the original game world is preserved, but gets fresh new content added in the spirit of its initial design. It has been rumored for a while that Classic Plus was in the works, [01:42] and if this BlizzCon would be where it was announced, this would be the place that fans first got their hands on an idea where we would all be able to hear in person from the developers about what this new game was going to be. [01:55] So I wanted to be there. I've been having so much fun playing through all the Warcraft games for the very first time this past year, and I wanted to be there to see a classic plus be announced in person. So naturally, I got on a plane to Los Angeles, took the long drive to Anaheim, and got a quick night's rest in my hotel before the following day, [02:13] where I shuffled into the main event hall alongside hundreds, if not thousands, of other fans eagerly awaiting whatever thing. What he didn't say is his plane was delayed. There was a party that first night, and he showed up late in a t-shirt and not his nice button-up. [02:31] I was asking him, everyone else's plane was delayed. Peekaboo's plane was delayed. Peekaboo wasn't even there. My plane was delayed, but I somehow got there in time. Every single person's plane was delayed that day. [02:43] somehow. Anyway. Anyway. If Blizzard had to announce, and oh my god, it turned out they had so many exciting things in the works. There's a new StarCraft game coming that looks dark. [02:55] 2035? Hell, Diablo 5 was revealed with its own horrifying trailer. Not to mention, there's a new Warcraft 3 campaign. The first in over 20 years. I can't wait to play this. [03:07] I can't even say it's amazing like it's a return to Golden Age Blurred. I can't wait to play it. The pinnacle of it all was still the last announcement that Holly Longdale was so clearly excited to share with us all. [03:21] Time to talk about something new. Maybe address some of the rumors out there. Because we know a lot of you love that nostalgic flavor of vanilla. [03:35] So what if we take vanilla and really plus it up? Yeah. I got chills again, dude. I got chills again. [03:47] You know, like five times. You know, I mean, I can't believe it. I can't believe it. I can't believe it. [03:59] Yo, Viper 50, give yourself one of the, you know, re-announcement of the announcement of the announcement. Viper, legendary, thank you. Okay, we'll get to the Blue Elves in a moment. [04:13] But honestly, this trailer, I'm curious what Jeeva thinks, because he's such a nice, positive guy, but he's still like, okay, we'll talk about that. It was so dope, especially to see live. [04:26] I'm still a new fan to WoW and Blizzard at large, so I don't have a lot of the negativity and frustration that so many others share from their history. So to me, sitting in that crowd, watching this trailer of the dork hunter from the first ever trailer going off in a new direction, leading to the Undead Paladin reveal, the City of Dalaran opening, we even had a gathering perfection highlighted. [04:50] It was actually so cool to see in person. I can only imagine that the chills that I felt watching, even getting teared up a little bit, I imagine that's the same series of feelings that all the other fans got to experience over the years [05:03] with the original announcement trailers for the first ever expansions back in the day. Oddly enough, this trailer was maybe the least exciting part of it. I actually love, like, these, like, IRL footage, like, selfie cam style footage of BlizzCon. [05:19] part of it is because I actually wasn't in the crowd this year I was on like streaming stations because I was live streaming it normally I'm in the crowd on opening ceremony like actually watching it like this I get to like relive the crowd experience [05:32] which is quite magical if you've ever been there because the crowd just like erupts and roars or boos Diablo Immortal depending on what's announced so it's pretty cool [05:45] in retrospect because most of us all but knew that Classic Plus was going to be announced. What we didn't know were some of the details of how the game would look, what would be different from all the other versions of WoW, [05:57] and how Blizzard were approaching this project compared to all the others. So the panels they did across the rest of BlizzCon where they actually revealed all the details and said all the right things just left me floored. [06:10] So what exactly is WoW Forever? For us, it begins with the simple belief there are still adventures worth telling in the original world of Azeroth. We're revisiting mysteries that were never fully explored, [06:24] stories that were never fully told, regions that existed on the map but never had the chance to become adventures of their own. I'm going to pause this real quick because someone in the chat asked, I think, a very misleading question. [06:38] But a lot of people have been asking this. Someone says, why is Guzu acting shocked? Y'all literally got flown out to test the thing prior. [06:51] I'm sure you're trolling. I hope you're trolling. But if you're not, guys, we haven't seen the trailer. We didn't know the name. Seeing, even if we did see that already and know the name, which we didn't, [07:06] the fact that it's now being announced is an incredibly exciting thing to feel and be emotional about. Why is Holly acting excited? Because she's announcing it to the rest of the world. [07:19] Come on, guys. Come on. Don't know why that needs to be said. We're not planning around future level cap increases that invalidate your accomplishments. [07:33] The professions you invest in matter. The routes you choose matter. And the gear you earn matters. The experiences that you share with friends matter. Our catch-up system is quite simple. [07:46] Play the game True Level up Run dungeons Make friends Explore the world. [07:58] Earn your rewards. I don't know what the reaction was on the internet with all the live streams that were watching the reveal, I'm sure, and the myriad of news articles that I bet were written, but I can say in the arena, it was electric. [08:10] Because this is something that WoW fans have been asking for for a really long time. Not just a version of classic with new content added, but a version of World of Warcraft that promises not to invalidate [08:24] all the work you put into a grind. Frankly, as somebody who's still a bit of an outsider to this game, this feels like the biggest flaw that has always plagued WoW. With the expansion model that Blizzard has adopted over the years, [08:36] every time a new expansion drops, the level cap goes up, tons of new gear is added, and all the players are funneled into a new zone or island or something that just grows the map further. [08:48] And while that would have been so cool for me as a kid if I got to go to Outland or Northrend or explore Kul Tiras for the first time, it also means that when a new expansion drops, the rest of the regular world is emptied out. Everybody has to leave to go do the new content. [09:02] All the old grinds that people had put hundreds of hours into have been made irrelevant with the new boxes, new gear, and new grinds they have to do instead. So it was well worth the hype and the trip to go out and hear in person that Blizzard are making a version of World of Warcraft that prioritizes horizontal progression, not increasing the level cap, and doing so much because they listened to their community who was asking for it. [09:27] If you are someone who found your way to this video and you've either never played WoW or you quit years ago and are only hearing about all this hype of people freaking out about WoW forever and wondering what it's all about, that's the reason. That's the main reason that this is such an exciting time for anybody who likes this MMO. [09:43] It feels like Blizzard is not only listening to their community, but they are having a bit of a return to form of their glory years with a darker tone that all their games seem to be taking. But let's not get carried away here. I don't want to lie and pretend like everything is perfect. [09:56] There is still some stuff that we could and should be criticized. For example, I personally hate the name Wow Forever. That sounds so anime-ing, and I mean that in the most derogatory way. I think that's a complete fair criticism. [10:10] At the end of the day, it's just a name and whatever, but I agree. When I heard a Wow Forever, because I was curious. I was like, what are they going to call it? Like, I don't know. And when they announced Wow Forever, I was like, oh, okay. [10:24] uh, you know, pretty much possible. I also feel kind of sad that for all the new content that they announced that is coming to WoW Forever, it sounds like there are so many dungeons and raids and all sorts of PvE experience, [10:38] but where's the PvP? There's only one new battleground? I mean, come on, Blizzard, you should add an equal amount of PvE and PvP content for players. But more than anything, there's also one very big blue fly in the suit. [10:50] By far the most contentious part of this reveal is the Skyborn, A new neutral race being added to Azeroth that people already have conflicting feelings over, to put it mildly. Since most of the calls for a classic plus a version of the game have come from the classic community, [11:05] many are pretty worried about how retail this new race feels, both in their looks as well as their whole starting zone. I've heard that they not only feel a bit more bouncy and a bit more like a retail character, but... [11:18] I'm glad she's been talking about this, because it gives even more credit to the conversation, because there's some people out there, as we discovered yesterday, that are like, dude, stop complaining, which brings me to another tangent, which maybe we'll get to in a second, [11:33] but I think there is place for valid criticism, and the reason I say it's cool that Jube's bringing it up is Jube is such a positive guy. He's not ever the guy to complain to complain. I would like to think, I would like to think [11:48] that I try my best to put that same foot forward, where I don't just complain to complain. I like to be positive. But yes, if there's something that needs to be said, I want to say it as well. [12:00] And that's why I've been pretty vocal about this one, right? It just needs to. So there it is. The side note tangent I was going to talk about is [12:12] it feels like I've noticed a trend. And the trend being it's not okay to complain when there's something new. It's not okay to critique when there's something new. [12:25] For example, every time there's a new retail expansion that comes out, and there's good things and bad things, whenever you come out and say, I like this, but I dislike that, people say, no, your dislikes are not valid. [12:40] You can't hate on this. It's too new. And it's just this kind of weird mindset of, like, wait, you can definitely give a positive and negative critique to something. Like, you can give a critique to something even though it's new. [12:52] Like, it's just such a weird mindset. Anyway, I think that same thing is happening with this. And it's not a new concept. It's happened for the last 20 years, every two years on a new expansion. But it's happening in forever where, like, if you give a critique, [13:04] all of a sudden you're shunned because, oh, you can't critique something. Like, what? I don't know. So anyway, I appreciate G-Bay critiquing. Of course there's a lot of good things. I think the critiques do need to be called out in a positive and constructive manner. [13:20] Because if not, who else is going to say something? Right? Right? It needs to be said. It needs to be said. So anyway, to those people that don't get that, maybe that makes a bit more sense. [13:33] Their quests in their starting zone that people have seen in the beta so far kind of involve some retail-esque narratives telling players to go and destroy a world-ending boss, or some grand storytelling like that compared to the more small and grounded narratives that Classic is known for. [13:48] There's also quite a few players who say that if Blizzard were going to add a new race to WoW, they should have added a race that either already existed in vanilla or the RTS games like Goblins, Ogres, or High Elves. [14:00] The Skyborn are a completely new invention. They have no previous connection or story threads that have ever been mentioned before this game, In fact, they may be the very first piece of original content that players experience [14:12] when they log into this game and create a character for the first time on November 4th when WoW Forever releases. I think that is why they are under a lot of scrutiny on the internet. But I have what I think is an... [14:25] Well, this is a Sony tweet. This tagline, or maybe not the best edition at the start of Classic Plus, there'd be no better way to show the World of Warcraft Forever community that you guys are truly listening and willing to adapt than by putting it up to a community poll of thoughts. Yeah. Yeah, I might be too late for that, but yeah, totally feel that. [14:41] They are under a lot of scrutiny on the internet, but I have what I think is an interesting take on them, especially after my experience going to BlizzCon, playing the demo, and this is kind of why I wanted to make this entire video. [14:54] On their initial reveal at the end of the trailer, I and most others in the crowd were fairly confused, And you could tell that Blizzard knew exactly how we would all react, because they were quick to direct us to the various panels that would explain the lore, purpose, and reason for the inclusion of the Skyborn in the vanilla world. [15:12] I would just like to call out, this is our first of four WoW Forever panels today. If you're looking to hear more about Wild Trevor lore, things like our Skyborn elves and how they fit into classic vanilla lore, I urge you to make it to the deep dive panel [15:29] on this very stage this afternoon. More specifically, the panel they had called Sound Photographs that spoke to how they're approaching all the new storytelling content that they adding to Forever did a lot to answer many questions This panel laid out how Blizzard are trying to deliver on three design pillars [15:46] when it comes to any of the new content that they add to WoW Forever. They're trying to add anticipated content people have been asking for, they want to expand familiar faces that existed but weren't properly fleshed out in previous games, [15:59] and only sparingly they would take some big swings to add some completely unexpected new content like the Skyborn. Now, the Skyborn, even though they are pretty new, are a fairly fleshed-out race [16:11] that is connected to the existing vanilla world and lore in a, I would say, solid way. Apparently, there were some Highborn elves in an ancient kingdom known as Eldrith Alas, who were forced to flee westward from Prince Tortheldrin after a failed rebellion, [16:26] where they found some wind spirits who agreed to aid them in their escape, raising some islands into the elemental plain where they had been hiding ever since. I'm still pretty new to the Warcraft lore, so I might be getting some of this wrong. [16:38] Sounds alright. From what I heard, both at BlizzCon and from other lore nerds, there isn't anything necessarily wrong here. Like, this story all works pretty well in the existing lore and history of Azeroth [16:52] without retconning anything. Yeah, so like theory-wise, we watched theory-wise this video yesterday, and I think he encapsulated how a lot of people were feeling. [17:04] It's like, yeah, you're allowed to make stuff up. The whole ground lore is made up. This is not retconning anything because it's not part of the original Warcraft 3 storyline. It's its own new unique story. [17:18] Like, fine. it's more about that it feels like it's a copy paste from retail or it's more about the visual and the look, less about the story. Like the lore, I think for a lot of people are like, oh, okay. [17:31] You know, that kind of, yeah, sure. Okay, that kind of works. But it doesn't look like they've been, you know, taken from a classic world. I think that is more the issue. If that's the case, I can already get behind the idea of the Skyborn pretty well. [17:46] And then when I heard that Chris Metzen was involved in fleshing out their story and history, and that he even drew a map of their starting zone, which just looks like it could have been plucked right out of the Warcraft 2 manual, [17:59] that had me breathing a big sigh of relief. I think, though, this, I will give this critique. There is time to add in new stories, because if you just do the old stories, you'll run out. [18:15] You have to add new stories at some point. You have to. This might not have been that time. For the first new race, for the first grand reveal, [18:27] it was probably a smarter choice to go with something safer, to go with something that had pre-established lore, like a true high elf or an ogre, even though I don't like ogres, but it was still, you know, [18:40] something that was pre-established lore this time, and then saving adding in more new stories, because you have to at some point, like this is fine, for the second new race or whatever down the line. [18:54] But for the first one, it was pretty jarring, I think. Not only that, it kind of sounds like the Skyborn were entirely Chris's idea. It all kind of started with a lot of questions with Chris Metzen. [19:06] We were talking about WoW Forever early on, and we knew we wanted to add some sort of elves. Everyone on the team is a big fan of elves. We all love elves. They're very popular. I like that one. I don't know what, who knew, right? And we knew we wanted to do something, [19:20] and, you know, we came to them with a bunch of ideas and pitches and different types of variants of elves, and, you know, in Midnight we just went to Quothalos and did that whole thing, and so I think we all just kind of knew, like, like, Metzen was really like, yeah, we should do something, [19:33] we should get a little crazy with it, right? I may be misreading this, but that interview specifically makes it sound like the team was considering adding either Blood Elves or High Elves to Warcraft Forever, but Chris encouraged them to go in an even more original direction, [19:48] which is a really interesting take, if true, because I don't know if this guy... I think that is generally true. I think I was listening to that interview, another one, I think people have kind of pieced together, [20:00] that was kind of the general idea, is that it was like, you could do a High Elf, or you could do something brand new, and kind of shock everyone. I think the literal, like, the models being HD only, [20:16] and then the blue skin paired with the art assets, I think is more of the issue than the novelty, though. Whether they're going to work or not, like, maybe they'll fit into the world perfectly, or maybe they're going to end up being too retail, and I'm just going to try to PK anyone I see on a PvP server, [20:30] no questions asked. But regardless, I actually think that the attempt at a new original race like this is exactly what a game like WoW Forever needs. As many of you guys already know, [20:42] I came to WoW after playing RuneScape off and on ever since 2006. And as someone who has been playing that MMO for ages, including through its own series of classic servers that were released, the one thing that title taught me over the years [20:55] was that you have to add truly new stuff eventually to keep a classic-style MMO alive. Yep, that's true. I completely agree, because a lot of people say, oh, there should be Rath servers forever or TBC servers forever. [21:12] And what I generally say is despite Rath being incredible and TBC being incredible, you just look at the player numbers. This was the last time TBC came out. [21:26] Sorry, Rath. 623,000 weekly raiders at the start, and by the end of Rath, 50,000. Right? If you never add new content to RAS, this 50,000 just keeps going down until it's almost zero. [21:39] Right? There will be, you know, people that play forever, but if you don't have new content, the game dies. Look, like, this is start a RAS, end a RAS. Start a Kata, end a Kata. Start a MOP, end a MOP. [21:52] This is start a TDC. That there's, like, pre-patch stuff, but, you know, end of TDC is still, like, half. TDC actually, surprisingly, a little flatter than the rest. But still, the point is, no new content, game dies, right? [22:06] RuneScape, same thing. Game died with old-school RuneScape, add in new content, back up, right? So anyway, that's what forever makes sense to do, Classic WoW. But yeah, I hear this argument time and time again. [22:18] Like, oh, let's just put Rats out, let's never do anything. It's like, well, you can't really do that. I mean, you can, but it's not going to be crazy successful when you leave the numbers, right? More history to Classic WoW in that it started as servers [22:31] that were identical to an earlier version of the game from its golden era. But when the player base shrunk because players actually wanted genuinely new content that they hadn't seen before, and they were kind of tired of running through [22:43] the exact same experience over and over, Jagex was forced to suggest and eventually add quite a lot of stuff that never was even referenced in the original game's world, story, or lore. [22:55] We got a whole new skill that was just a meme from 2010. we got new bosses that nobody from 2007 would ever be able to beat, we got new continents with their own storylines, histories, and lore that had zero connection whatsoever to the original established world. [23:11] And there's been quite a bit of debate ever since these things were added about whether or not this stuff belongs in old school, or if any of it feels out of place for the tone of the rest of the game. I myself refused to set foot on Greater Curran for like two years after that expansion launched because I felt like it didn fit with the original world I was very much a traditionalist no changes type of person But as time has gone on and I and many others [23:36] eventually started going through the new content, I came to love a lot of what was introduced as most players have. In fact, a ton of this content has turned into some of the most celebrated and favorite content [23:48] for many in the entire game. Endgames like Raids and Zot and even the collection log have done such a good job of providing new goals to grind for without invalidating previous grinds for players. [24:00] And I think a lot of these additions are the things that kept players coming back, that keep them playing the game, because if Jagex only ever tried to remix old existing content, stuff that had already existed [24:12] and been backported into the game, I don't know if the game would be as healthy with its player base as it is today. And you can probably see where I'm going with this. Through that lens, I don't hate the Skyborn at all. [24:24] And in fact, I kind of think that they're exciting. Because sure, Blizzard could have added high elves instead, or goblins, or ogres, or murlocs. Something from the original RTS titles and vanilla. But that's a world you can only draw on for so long. [24:38] That's right, that is true. If the game is going to live up to its name and last literally forever, it can't just add missing zones and content that people were already asking for. A lot of that will be nice and well-received, and it may kick off a lot of hype for one, two, five, ten years, [24:54] but eventually, you're going to run out of existing things. So, like, that is true, right? We've already touched on that. That is so true. Personally, I think saving something like this until a little bit later, but I think, once again, the biggest issue is just how it looks. [25:10] Literally just the art. But it's true. Like, for people that are like, you can't make up lore, it's like, how do you think all lore is made up, bro? You know? Like, it's literal. You do, right? [25:23] At some point, you do. Right? Metzen drew this stuff. That is literally how it works. You have to at some point. So it's true. You're going to have to add something new. And I think and kind of hope that's why Chris pushed the team to go in such a completely fresh direction, [25:39] to add something that never existed before, because you're going to have to take that leap sooner or later, and you might as well get it out of the way now. I mean, could you imagine the reaction if the Skyborn were the first thing that Blizzard added, but it wasn't until five years from now? [25:53] People would be losing their minds and saying, oh god, Forever is turning into retail. Just to reiterate, I don't know if it's going to work well or not. Like, maybe the Skyborn really are a mistake, and they're going to be an eyesore on an otherwise great game, [26:06] But I'm personally pretty glad to see that there's already been an attempt to spin some fresh content out of the old world that this game's meant to be built on. And there's also so much new content they're already adding from the original vanilla and RTS games. [26:21] Like, they're adding Sunnyglade! I can't wait to see Sunnyglade in World of Warcraft! I am so glad I went back and played through that mission in Orcs and Humans. Although, if I'm going to be honest, you know, I might be giving the devs a little bit too much grace here just because they were all so unbelievably cool when I got to meet them at BlizzCon. [26:39] Like, okay, so when I went to BlizzCon on day one and I was waiting around my seat for the main event to start, I got the chance to meet a ton of the Classic Team devs who all came up to say hi to me beforehand. [26:51] Because it turned out so many of them watched my videos. That's sick. During my series going through Classic Arrow Wow around their office, every time I drop a new episode, which is so flattering, that already floored me. [27:04] But then, almost every one of the devs who told me they watched my videos, those were the guys who went off. Live on stage. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Forever on stage. My job was on the floor. [27:16] I had no idea such important people were paying attention to anything I was doing on my YouTube channel. I mean, I guess it kind of makes sense in hindsight. these guys live and breathe classic WoW. Some of these have been working at Blizzard for over 20 years, [27:30] ever since the start of WoW's first release, and they've been spending every waking moment of their lives discussing and debating and figuring out not only what makes a great classic MMO experience, but how to recreate those experiences for new generations of players. [27:45] And everything I saw from the demo and what others have since shared from the beta sounds like they have already succeeded on such a great level, recreating the magic of the visuals, the social elements with the camping, [27:58] adding new content and reworking items to make a fresh, unsolved game. That's not to say that I think this game is going to be flawless. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if Blizzard's executive suite still thinks that WoW Forever is just a weird offshoot [28:11] of the main version of their massively profitable game and don't give them nearly as much resources as they probably should. But I think this is the most exciting version of World of Warcraft right now. I think it has the most potential, and whether you have been playing WoW for decades [28:24] or you're a completely new player like me, it is the version I think everyone should try when it releases on November 4th. The beta is already out, and I'm trying not to play it myself so I can go in blind on launch. [28:36] I'll definitely make a series out of my stories and whatever experiences I have in the new game. Probably lots of series. So let me know what you guys want to see most. Should I do a four-star through, even though the Alliance are the superior faction? [28:48] And if I do, should I do an undead? Or should I go and play one of the races on Kalimdor? And what class? I don't have a lot of time to think about it, because, oh my god, I have to hit 50 in Era and run at least one raid before it's launched. [29:01] My main theory is... I was thinking about that. So, Chibe is, like, level, what, 40-something on Era. This launches in November 4th. [29:13] Is he going to be able to hit 60, finish up his series, and hit a raid in the next... I mean, if he has no life that he could, it's going to be a lot. It's going to be close. [29:26] If he knows... He's going to have to go crazy. We'll see. We'll see. It wrapped up a lot faster than I thought. Not to mention, I also have to play through that new Warcraft 3 campaign. I can't wait. But I am so excited. I think there is room to critique, especially with some of the Skyborn stuff. But overall, I think he makes a really good point. On old school RuneScape, you add new stuff, [30:22] and it's jarring at first. And then over time, people come to really like it. I think I was talking to Josh Greenfield during the podcast, and he said that... [30:34] I don't know if this was in the podcast or on the pre-show. I can't remember. It might have been on pre-show. But he said that back in the day, he played PBC, so like in 2006 or whatever. And he was one of the players that hated Draenei. [30:49] He was like, this doesn't belong. He hated it. He refused to make a Draenei. And then like, it wasn't until like years later, he's like, oh, okay. Yeah, Draenei's are pretty cool. So it took him like, it was kind of the same experience that T-Big talked about with old school, [31:02] with Moon's, I think the Moon's content, where it's like, this doesn't really fit. And then it's like, oh, years later, okay, yeah. It kind of does. I don't know if I feel the same way about Skyborn, but I'm saying that early on. [31:14] Maybe I will down the road. But I think with Skyborn, it's really just an art thing, you know?
