[00:02] I have been a long time professor of exercise and sports science, competitive bodybuilder, way back in the day competitive powerlifter, and competitive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu grappler, and a huge lifelong fan of Dragon Ball Z. And for [00:16] today's episode, we're going to review Dragon Ball Z clips to see if they're scientific and make sense in the training context, but something's missing. Hold on. [00:43] >> Human fools. Now we review Dragon Ball Z. is the shit that got us all into lifting weights, right? [00:56] >> Brilliant. Even Goku knows training science. I love that. >> I got to make it to 10,000. Then I can up the gravity level to 60. up the gravity level to 60. >> His reward is that he gets to increase [01:09] the gravity. If someone is happy that they get [music] to train harder, they get [music] to train harder, they're fucking unstoppable. [01:22] >> Before we continue, [music] I need to shed some of these clothes. >> NOW LIGHTER than a feather. It's great. >> [laughter] [01:40] lifting weights, right? Like Piccolo's body armor, Goku's heavy shit. They're always trying to make stuff harder in DBZ so they could get stronger. One of the things in Dragon Ball Z that just completely blew me away [01:56] and made me a lifelong fan was that it was so different from almost every Western style of action cartoon where like I'm sure Superman trained here and there or whatever. But he like [02:10] the Justice League characters, the DC Universe, there's there's not like a known training culture where it's like, "Oh, you start out like whatever and then you train and you put in tons of work and then you can just ascend to [02:22] these next levels. People who used to beat you half to death now have to cower kind of the power levels are more or less pretty set in in most of the kind of Western tradition of action cartoons. [02:34] the first time I ever saw it I was like, "Whoa, these people train. It's a giant training cartoon." And so a huge fraction of lifters I know got mega mega inspiration from Dragon Ball Z precisely because that ability to [02:49] train for a year and no one sees you hashtag monk mode. The stuff is all so works well with so many other sports, especially lifting weights and combat sport. Amazing. Now so kind of technical level, is it a good idea to wear [03:04] overweighted training clothes? It can be an advantage to getting you body weight and then you're just much weight. There is a problem with that though. [03:17] to your ability to move your body, they're going to alter your movement patterns and you're going to become less fast and you're going to start to think more slowly now. And then if you take the clothes off, [03:31] you'll actually be a bit more spastic because you won't have had practice with movements and the higher speed movements now that body. So it's kind of a bit of a specificity problem. So the best thing [03:44] in reality to do is lift weights like crazy like Vegeta himself in the time chamber. Your time chamber is the weight room. You come out of the weight room, or kickboxing or something like that, and you go on the courts to train [03:56] tennis, whatever it is. Train in your best outfits that are replicate as close [music] So, in jiu-jitsu, you do ghee, you wear the ghee, no ghee, wear no ghee stuff, just like it's going to be on the day the of the event, and you're going [04:10] idea than trying to get your clothes and the weights all mixed together because of that specificity problem. You're not training for a different thing, not the though, >> Unbelievable, Kakarot. I'd recommend it. [04:26] >> Unbelievable, Kakarot. I'd recommend it. >> 49,995. somehow managed to create more grueling resistance than the artificial gravity [04:40] TRAINING ROOM. >> That's got under an immense amount of >> It really is. >> He's like, "I'm going to be very here with this sentence." >> Damn, THIS IS REALLY TOUGH. [04:54] >> NICE WORK. >> SO, they're so strong at this point, >> SO, they're so strong at this point, they can do 50,000 handstand push-ups with a thumb only, but they have to have special clothes on to magnify the effect [05:11] of resistance and the gravity many, many fold. a mountain into just sand if you were that strong. My question as asshole sport scientist [05:23] is, but what training quality are we going for if we're doing 50,000 reps? That's endurance right there, and it is, you know, doesn't convert to maximum punching power if you can do that many of anything. And so, persnickety Mike [05:41] >> I trained at 10 times gravity on King Kai's planet, [music] so I should probably start higher than that. that. 20 [05:53] from a training perspective. Folks, if you're used to lifting 100 lb in the bench press in your old training facility, I wouldn't start your next meso cycle in the RP Hypertrophy app. It comes with dozens of pre-made programs [06:07] way up to 6 [music] days of training with specialized programs included for with specialized programs included for shoulders, arms, chest, back, legs, abs, description of this video to get started. [06:20] Actually, the man. I wouldn't start that with uh 200 lb. That's not a good idea. Something reasonable would be like, "Oh, on King Kai's planet, I used to train with 10 times normal gravity. Maybe on day one, [06:33] I'll start with eight or nine times normal gravity, and then every few days increase by one until eventually I get to 20." I know I'm being reasonable on anime, but I'm also wearing the world's cheapest Temu Goku shirt ever, so [06:47] whole outfit. >> You got ripped off. >> [laughter] >> Should have tried 11. science. I love that. [06:59] >> 9,999 >> [music] [07:12] nothing of value. You can get everything you need out of ab training between five and 30 repetitions. Done with resistance. Get you Get you an Done with resistance. Get you Get you an ab wheel, pimp. Get you an ab crunch [07:25] have a bunch. And increase the resistance in the five to 30 rep range. If you want to do some sets of 50 or 60 ab stuff for endurance, >> You're not going to get big and strong. You're not going to be able to punch [07:38] crunches. It's just not going to happen. So, on vibes, again, this is amazing. On real training science, go heavier, for [music] sure. [07:56] >> Yeah, I love it. >> Train hard and then eat as much grub as you can and repeat and like challenge yourself. Man, DBZ really did teach us yourself. Man, DBZ really did teach us all the basics. [08:18] is like goated. Not only is he strong, he's flexible, too. Goku's really got it he's flexible, too. Goku's really got it all. eccentric more. Scott, do I Why do I feel bad critiquing Goku's training? [08:33] with all due respect. You know what I'm saying? Frieza's out half rep shitty bullshits. >> [music] [08:54] lot. Vegeta is an incredible inspiration in the sense of his struggle from being the underdog who wasn't supposed to be the underdog. Promised greatness, Prince Vegeta, underdog to a shitload of people, Goku, [09:10] Frieza, et cetera, and then the rise back to supremacy is just glorious, but that. But as much as it pains me to say this, But as much as it pains me to say this, Goku's philosophy on training and life [09:24] is superior. Goku is the role model. His reward for doing 10,000 inverted sit-ups or whatever is that he gets to increase the gravity. [09:36] If someone is happy that they get to train harder, they're fucking unstoppable. Goku's optimism, his high energy, and his desire to make things as [09:48] challenging for himself as possible continuously, and his practice of good recovery practices in between of lots of food and lots of sleep, and the fact that he doesn't seem to worry much, he's just super chill, Goku, attitude-wise, [10:01] athlete possible. He loves a good challenge. He can't wait to work harder, and he's also good at resting. Goku's got it all. I used to hate that Goku won all the fights cuz he's annoying, you guys, and Vegeta is the only one true [10:14] Saiyan prince. But like, man, Goku deserves it. I told you it was going to be tough for me TO SAY THAT. >> [screaming] >> IF I DON'T CUT OFF THAT GRAVITRON, I'LL [10:28] DIE. >> LIKE A squat day goes wrong, how Scott? the belt squat at the bottom position and you can't get up. You're like, uh-oh. [10:48] And now that I've experienced 100 times gravity, I know that that's what I have to train in. It's the only way I'll stand a chance on Namek. This is a reflection of a common myth [11:03] in weight training. If, for example, you're training for hypertrophy, I remember I did this with the four-plate squat myself, and you do five sets of 20 that at home on the first time, you'll get rhabdo. Even if you've squatted 405 [11:16] to do a few squat sets to really hammer in the quads, you can do two plates on a side for sets of like 10, and it'll cook your ass because you're so So, the idea that once you reach a high water mark, anything below that is not a [11:31] results that you want or your best results is just wrong. What's true is harder over time and every time you do train it should be relatively So really it's less like one crest and then you go up from there, it's a crest [11:45] and then a wave back down and then eventually, weeks later, maybe days, weeks, months, even years later, you come up and hit another higher crest That's how it works in the real world. Otherwise powerlifters would just add 2 [11:58] eventually everyone would be as strong as Goku, which would be awesome, but as Goku, which would be awesome, but it's not reality. >> Senzu beans. I'll have to thank Yajirobe for these next time I see him. [12:23] Senzu bean after every hour of training and training for 8 hours a day? some scarcity to these? Is there unlimited amounts? Like right? You can't just get them. He's got them. He's got some like [12:36] interdimensional dealer or some shit. Exactly. Is there a scarcity? Is it one you take three Senzu beans in one day, like your liver's done, bro." >> God, how many how many guys would just still do that if we had real Senzu [12:51] still do that if we had real Senzu beans? A lot. The answer is a lot. having enough resistance, Scott. He's at least taking massive hits to the face [13:03] from energy balls. Uh yeah, you know, I hate the saying in physiology is like, "Just fuck yourself up somehow and you're good. You're going to get stronger." Which is true cuz later Vegeta had like uh [13:15] beat him up. You guys want to see something? You guys want to see something? Vegeta, Goku, Vegeta. Krillin. I didn't like that joke. Shut up, Scott. [13:29] >> Every time people tell me that I'm Krillin, a part of me dies. >> And because they told me I'm Krillin, I'm happy it dies. [13:44] I guess there really is such a [music] thing as training too hard. about training I learned from Dragon Ball Z. Also, I would say like launching spaceship that's keeping you alive, Scott, slightly irresponsible. [13:58] can't one just like pop out the side? >> Isn't that [laughter] going to Huh? >> Won't do anyone any good if I end up dead. I've got to be more careful. >> I want every one of you that goes too [14:11] time before you go to the gym. You don't want to end up dead. You don't want to worst thing is dead, whatever. Your family have a cool funeral. Rabdo's a baller way to go. You get to flirt with a nurse at the hospital. [14:24] Overreaching constantly and just getting like weird nagging joint pains and getting weaker over the course of 4 weeks before you pull yourself back and of rest. That's really the lamest one, you guys. Don't do that. [14:37] When you're no longer getting stronger for reps for two consecutive workouts in >> [music] >> to deload, take a week of way easier training, eat plenty of food, get plenty of sleep, relax a ton, come back, start [14:51] a little lighter, start with less volume, and start threading that needle needles up, but the analogy sort of works. you, I would never have dreamed of exerting myself as I have. While such [15:04] inflicted indescribable damage to my pride. >> I knew you'd love that one. >> Frieza is the man. It's so awesome what they were like, you know, believe it or not, Frieza came up to basically Super [15:19] Saiyan standard and never trained. And I love the fact that he considers training like insulting, [music] which is so sweet. Wow, vibes out of 10. Scott, uh trillionaire man character. He can't be bothered. [15:33] >> [laughter] >> I hate training cuz it questions my my Unreal. >> EFFORT IS A HUMILIATION. NO SUPERIOR [15:45] BEING SHOULD HAVE to toil and sweat and STINK LIKE SOME LOWLY BEAST. TRAINING IS MEANT FOR THE MONKEY AND NOT FOR THE MASTER. >> THAT'S SO GOOD. >> YEAH, NOT A very pro-gym attitude from [15:57] Frieza, I suppose. That one of the main reasons why beat. Folks, there are still more video to come, but lots of this video is in the member section. It's expanded. We say crazier shit in there, and [16:13] there's tons of awesome educational content. I do member Q&A in there. My Get at the member section, check it out. It's awesome. Click around, buy stuff. It's super cheap, amazing value. All right, BACK TO VIDEO. [16:32] [bell] >> SOLID UNITLESS REFERENCE of 137 something units, which is cool. Good. Remember Mr. Satan, aka Hercule, is like the strongest human or something like that. Uh dope. [16:54] >> It's so funny to me that Android 18 can just like flick it and get 700 whatever She could have totally got under the radar and just like touched it and got less than Mr. Satan. Cuz like otherwise, like how can she pick up a cell phone [17:10] without crushing it or like drive a car? So she's clearly she's capable of exerting less power than that, but even just a flick. Yeah, there's levels to this, FOLKS. NOW STAND [music] ASIDE. You've seen this one, right, Scott? [17:24] Dragon Ball Z. This is exactly what Vegeta should do. They did him so right Vegeta should do. They did him so right in this scene. God. [17:43] >> Oh, well. So much for restraining. >> Why restrain when you can just flex? Folks, I haven't had this much fun in minutes. Fine, hours. Okay, my entire [17:57] life. This was amazing. I will always love Dragon Ball Z as much as the next person. Probably more. I know we didn't have any up. You can get at me in the comments. Dragon Ball Z is the best show about [18:12] training to inspire to lift weights. 8 out of 10. You can have all sorts of trouble with that in the comments. Yeah, but Dr. that in the comments. Yeah, but Dr. Mike, Baki Hanma. I beg it. I'm too old. [18:26] We're going to check out all that other stuff as well. I just I just don't like One Punch Man. The fact that he's just reason. Dragon Ball Z is superior. [18:40] And I'll see you next time. >> [music] >> to entertain yourself pathetically one [18:54] more time, well, this video right here will probably do. You fool.
