[00:06] Renaissance? Welcome back to screen. Is Disney ruining Darth Vader or are we Welcome back to Screen Crush. I'm Ryan Vader's appearance in the finale of Maul Shadow Lord and some comments that Dave [00:18] controversial with some fans. I know Star Wars fans thinking something's next? A little later, I'm going to talk to a panel of friends to get their take super chats. We're going to be taking your questions. As always, super chats [00:32] your questions. As always, super chats are encouraged but not required. Thank you. But first, let's run through Vader's complicated history with fans. So, like from the moment Vader entered the Tant 4, he has been one of the most [00:44] iconic villains ever put on screen. In literally just 12 minutes of screen time, Vader was mysterious and scary. He had a backstory that made us want more. And when Obi-Wan said, >> "A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was [00:58] a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, he betrayed and murdered your father." >> This was setting the saga up as a revenge story for Luke Skywalker. And great. >> I am your father. [01:11] >> With just four words, the saga was no longer about Luke. It was now about the redemption of Anakin Skywalker. Return of the Jedi. In a single scene, it they almost made you feel bad for this guy. It is too late for me, son. [01:26] >> And of course, his final turn to the good side is also an inspiration for any younger generation. We can all redeem the mistakes of our parents. >> Now, there have always been hot takes on Vader, including this hilarious [01:39] Amy. >> And then you got Darth Vader, the blackest brother in the galaxy. Nubian god. >> Shut the [ __ ] up. And over the years, Vader went from being a fearsome monster [01:52] to being a mascot for Star Wars. He was on cereal boxes and blankets and even hawkked batteries. But for the most part, everybody agreed that the arc that Vader had in the original trilogy was great. But then, of [02:06] fans off. Fanboys expected young Vader to be a Damianike evil monster, but find in a serial commercial. Mom, you say the biggest problem in this universe >> And Hayden Christensen's performance as an older Anakin also drew criticism for [02:22] >> I don't like sand. >> But he brought vague darker moments with >> They're like animals, and I slaughtered them like animals. >> Now, Revenge of the Sith, for the most part, brought us all together as we [02:36] finally saw the fall of Anakin Skywalker and the rise of Lord Vader. fans wanted a darker story and then we got the first PG-13 Star Wars. [02:50] hokey moment, and then of course he reused it in a revision of Return of the Jedi, but look, for the most part, that's where Vader's story was meant to end until Disney bought Lucasfilm and had [03:03] one driving philosophy. >> No one's ever really gone. Vader is the rare original character that actually could have returned to Star Wars in any story of the further adventures of Luke Skywalker, they would have to either [03:15] recast the character or tell the story in a different medium like animation or comics. But Vader could continue on in live action. But instead, Marvel Comics gave us the brilliant series Darth Vader by Karen Gillan and Salvador Laroka. [03:28] This book picks up immediately after the events of A New Hope. It shows how Vader discovered that Luke Skywalker blew up the Death Star and then his rage at Padme. >> It seems in your anger, you killed her. [03:43] >> The book also details why he wanted to overthrow the Emperor in Empire Strikes Back. >> Join me and together we can rule the galaxy as father and son. Then the 2017 Darth Vader series by Charles Soul picks [03:56] up after the events of Revenge of the Sith and shows Vader's early days as he struggles to purge Anakin from his mind. And finally, the third Darth Vader comic by Greg Pack bridges Empire and Return of the Jedi. And then it lays the [04:08] is a great trilogy of books that gave us characters like Dr. AFA and lines like, "I am surrounded by nothing but dead men and fear." And Disney also gave Vader a totally badass one scene cameo in Rogue One. In the finale of the film, as the [04:22] rebels are struggling to escape with the Death Star plans, we see a single red lightsaber and Darth Vader appears on screen for the first time in 30 years. This is the definitive uh person. Yeah, buddy. Vader was actually earlier in the [04:34] that? >> Be careful not to choke on your director. >> Oh god, I hate that scene. But this movie does show the two ways that the corporation has used Darth Vader. One as [04:49] this badass, unstoppable, impregnable force and the other as a jokey mascot force and the other as a jokey mascot for Star Wars. >> In animation, Vader remained an antagonist. In the show Rebels, he [05:03] against his former Padawan, Ahsokaano. Vader was also the final boss in games like Fall in Order and made a cool cameo in the game Star Wars Outlaws. But he this unknowable, frightening force of nature. Vader's return to live action [05:17] finally came in the TV show Obi-Wan Kenobi, which great premise for a story. Oon McGregor returns to rescue young Leia and has to face up to his traumatic past and find hope again. But the look of the TV series turned off a lot of [05:29] fans cuz it doesn't look highbudget. It looks kind of cheap, like I'm sure However, the show also features one of these seminal Darth Vader moments when he tells Obi-Wan, >> "You didn't kill Anakin Skywalk. I did." [05:43] The show does a great job of laying the groundwork for their duel in A New Hope. But did Lucasfilm mishandle this opportunity? Like the show came at a live action TV shows because of the pandemic, but we'll talk about that in [05:56] about Vader's appearance on the show Maul Shadow Lord. He is once again a force of nature. He never speaks. He only fights. He sees Darth Maul, and to him, he only sees a dead man in fear. Lucasfilm president Dave Fona this week [06:10] explained at an event he's not Anakin. He doesn't recognize that. He can't. he's going to destroy. When he sees a Jedi, he's going to destroy the Jedi because the Jedi would remind him unconsciously or consciously that he [06:24] everything he knew in the life he grew up with, but for nothing. I personally think that's a great take for Anakin Skywalker, but not everyone agrees. Ryan Ary and uh we're trying something new here on Screen Crush Rewind. We [06:38] intro. Eventually, we're going to do that kind of thing live with me reading off a teleprompter and adding in assets, but we ran out of time. So, we had conflicts today and we wanted to make sure everybody got to be here. So, we [06:51] We're taking your super chats. We've already got a $500 super chat that I can't wait to address here in just a second. So, thank you for that. And like encouraged, but not required. But let me bring on our Star Wars fans here to tell [07:05] us what they like and don't like about Star Wars. If you were with us on May nothing that Star Wars fans like more than complaining about Star Wars. But Wars in this case. Let me know your thoughts on Disney's Vader. The good, [07:19] arrive in the future. And let's start with my good friend. You know him. He's trapped in a television but doesn't know it. So please don't tell him. Mr. Colton Agburn. What's up, Colton? >> Hey, buddy. I I love talking [ __ ] about [07:31] much I love it. I'm I'm looking forward to it. Yeah. >> You especially love talking [ __ ] It's why, you know, you've done this before. video on it. But that Obi-Wan Kenobi show, I think, has a special dark place [07:45] >> Yeah. >> And uh especially somebody here who's familiar with the animated Darth Vader, uh big f big friend of the channel, Miss Whitney Van Lanningham from the channel Whitney Vision. What's up, Whitney? [08:00] >> Hi. I'm so excited to talk about Darth Vader, you guys. This is going to be great. >> And you know, with an intro like that, uh, I I cannot be more excited either to hear your thoughts. And of course, you [08:12] know her from her work on screen rant and here at Screen Crush, all the screens. Liz Dean, what's going on, Liz? >> Hi. I'm also excited to talk about Vader. He's my favorite character. >> Is he real? Okay, so moment of [08:25] clarification. Is Vader your favorite character or Anakin or both? >> So, I have them together. I have a signed Funko of Anakin and then I have Vader head on top. So, both, which is what I want to talk about. [08:39] >> Signed by Darth Vader. >> Signed by Hayden himself. >> Oh, okay. Yeah, that's an easier autograph to get, I think. >> All right. So, uh let's let's get right into it before we get into like the [08:51] Whitney, you haven't seen Maul episode 10. Um, >> Yeah, that's all good. That's all good. We will spoil some of that for you. So, job. >> Yeah. And I guess that that goes for [09:05] like everybody out there. We got some spoilers coming up for Maul Shadow Lord and every other appearance of Darth Vader. So, Liz, what did you think about what Dave Fona said? He kind of went on after that quote that I read. Um, he [09:17] said, "Anakin is trapped somewhere within Vader and Darth Vader won't let him surface." uh what replaces Anakin is essentially a void. And he says the key is not actually to give him a character. It's the same feeling you get in Rogue [09:32] doesn't talk to those guys. He's going to destroy them. Uh and he went on and is George's character. This is the backbone of the whole thing, and you interrupts that. What are your thoughts on on Fileon's take on Vader? [09:46] >> The only part I had an issue with is that first part where he said that's not Anakin. I think it's an interesting argument to say that Vader is repressing the human side of Anakin, but I don't like the idea that it's not Anakin [09:58] >> What do you think the difference is? Because Luke did tell him, "I believe you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father." And he says, "That name has no meaning for me." So, how do I mean, what do you clarify, please? I think with [10:12] what Fona said, it just sounded so much more literal to me to say that's not Anakin Skywalker as opposed to when Luke's feels more like, you know, he he like I was saying like he squashed that side of [10:26] himself, like that's been repressed. But the idea that >> I mean, I think it's really important to his character that he's both, right? And we see that with Anakin. I mean, he chopped up the Tuscan raiders long [10:38] before he officially fell to the dark side. So, I think funny. >> It's a It's a strict dichotomy like here's Anakin and here's Vader. I just think that that that's not my read on the character. [10:51] do with the binary view of the Force that the Jedi have? You know, because I George Lucas, he always stayed away from drugs, right? He lived through the 1960s and went to college in California and didn't do drugs, which is a pretty [11:05] With all due respect, that's [ __ ] insane. No, >> it really is. and and that alone is an achievement almost on par with creating >> true. >> I think I always looked at the at the [11:17] dark side as his metaphor for addiction. Like once you take that first bit of H, you are locked in for life. Um and so I think that's where the binary of well no once you start down the dark path it forever dominates your destiny. And [11:31] all the way. Do you think that's got anything to do with it? that's something that Star Wars has struggled to address before is whether it really is this binary or whether there is more complexity there. And so I [11:47] think about really interesting characters like Balen Skull, right, who I would say doesn't doesn't sit on firmly on either side of that binary. deep you want to get into the lore. You know, people like to throw the ter the [12:03] term gray Jedi around, which I hate because the whole point of a Jedi is you're the light side. There can be gray force users. There are u the Bendu, creatures uh that we we met in the show, rebels who don't associate with either [12:19] side of the force. There's also um in the novels there's Quinnland Voss and um uh Elzar man who delve with the dark side but come back. I don't know. I Liz guys think about this idea that Anakin and Vader is a dichotomy or that you [12:36] know period like do you agree with what Fona said? Fona said? I have a very specific take on this uh I have a very specific take on this uh which is that I'm a person who uh I have [12:50] borderline personality disorder BPD and there is a very very strong correlation between Anakin Skywalker Vader and that personality disorder. Um, and actually a [13:03] group of a group of mental health professionals actually published a paper proving that Anakin Skywalker has BPD. Like absolutely. >> Uh, yeah. Are you serious? She has she has all of the same symptoms as I do. [13:18] Uh, we both have what I like to call basically Palpatine disorder. Um, and >> hold on, Whitney. My mind I'm literally world rocked by this. I had no idea this existed. Yeah, this is going to be a very special Vader episode about mental [13:33] health. Um, so get ready, guys. I have so much to tell you. Uh, so the force so much to tell you. Uh, so the force itself is a huge part of having BPD. Uh, itself is a huge part of having BPD. Uh, we're all force wielders. Uh, because [13:45] the light side and the dark side is exactly how your brain works when you have BPD. You think completely in black and white. You think everything in Sith and Jedi, there's no gray area for your emotions. you're either 100% this or [14:00] emotions. you're either 100% this or you're 100% that. And a huge part of like treatment for BPD is having to learn to develop the skill of seeing the gray area and seeing the in between. And building the and and the or instead or [14:16] sorry, building the and instead of the or like it doesn't have to be black or white. It can be somewhere in the middle. There can be nuance to situations. And so that's first and foremost believing in the force is [14:28] basically believing in BPD. Like you are giving me agency. You make my brain correct when you when you talk about the force. Uh which I love. Um but that's a huge part of Anakin is that he and other Jedi and other Sith really see the world [14:43] one of two ways. You can either be the light side or you can be the dark side. And because Anakin, I believe, has BPD, he cannot see >> the gray area. He cannot see the nuance. He cannot see any of that. So, in his [14:58] He cannot see any of that. So, in his mind, he was once Anakin Skywalker, but that you can convince him that Anakin Skywalker still exists because his brain already decided, nope, that's it. And uh so that's something that I find very [15:14] very interesting because basically the this entire character is just a person with BPD who doesn't have Lexapro or a therapist. Um a lot of the other things he does like the the intense rage, the fear of abandonment because of the way [15:30] that he grew up. He has that really big fear of Padme leaving him. Um, he has obviously tied into like the way that his mother died and the way that he was enslaved and they were tortured when he was a kid. Uh, that's kind of how BPD [15:46] manifests is when you have a lot of abandonment early on in your life, it starts affecting every other relationship in your existence. And so, a lot of Anakin's extreme anger comes from these feelings of extreme loss that [16:01] he has. and he does not have the capability in his brain to be able to say, "Yes, I experienced all of this loss, but that doesn't mean that Padme that this is going to change. That doesn't mean I need to go to the dark [16:16] side. That doesn't mean I need to kill a bunch of younglings." No, in his brain, those are the only options. He's like, "My wife died and my kids are gone and this is my only choice now. I I am on the dark side." So when I hear stuff [16:31] like, "Oh, he doesn't he doesn't associate with Anakin anymore." I'm thousand times. Sometimes I don't associate with Whitney, you know." Uh, associate with Whitney, you know." Uh, so to me, it makes it makes sense, but [16:45] it but it doesn't because at the same time, as a person with BPD, I know that I'm actually a whole person. I'm not actually split into two the two camps. I'm not a a Jedi or a Sith Lord. I am a person and I can have [16:59] >> and your name is Anakin. And my name is Anakin Skywalker and I hate sand. I hate it. It's coarse, rough, irritating, gets everywhere. Sick of it. That's a total BPD crash out, by the way. Uh, >> now what I love about what I love about [17:13] >> now what I love about what I love about what you just said is a big problem, you as a film is that Anakin goes from, you know, being best friends with Obi-Wan and all this to I'm going to murder children on camera. That's a big point [17:28] of contention that you're I and what Fona said too about he is or is not. Jedi. >> I think is really aligns what you're saying. But that's truly a thing with BPD. I've had friendship breakups and [17:43] crashes. I' I've never killed children. But in the same way that it's like, wait, why did he go from like loving Obi-Wan and them having this bromance to and Obi-Wan is standing over him with his legs cut off? How did we get there? [17:57] BPD. BPD is how we got there. Uh I have had so many friendship breakups in the had so many friendship breakups in the same vein as Anakin Skywalker. Uh, and I I really I connect with this character on such a deep level. And that's why I [18:10] guy. I think he just needs medication and therapy, baby. That's what I needed. I forgot to ask you before we started. What's your thoughts? >> I haven't seen it. Well, I'm starting with with Maul Shadow Lord. Yeah. [18:24] with with Maul Shadow Lord. Yeah. >> Yeah. on on Tuesday. I thought it was a new Inquisitor, but then Maul said, "You're no Inquisitor." And I was like, "Oh, okay. Who is he?" [18:37] Yeah. Oh, sorry, Whitney. Spoilers. Um, >> I made an Alexa Pro run this morning, actually. Uh, as far Look, I I think Whitney's answer. [18:52] that. And I have someone in my life with BPD as well. And so, yeah, I mean, not Vader, but Darth Vader is kind of a Yeah. an exaggerated example of kind of >> I'm doing it. So, I'm technically giving you permission just this once. It's [19:05] >> You can say it right now. I'm giving you that per You can say it about me. How >> Okay, got it. Um, >> so just don't go near Whitney near a >> I never do it because it won't end well for me. It just won't. I'm I'm sorry. [19:20] Protect your local Whitney and don't bring me near lava. >> I don't know. I I find the the conversation of not to insult your question, Ryan, but it oh, are Anakin and Darth Vader the same person or not? [19:33] I I feel like that's just like an exhausting philosophical question that is that of course they're the same person. Yes, they're very different. They have different, you know, moments in their life where they Vader is a very [19:47] different person who is very, you know, he becomes the shadow. He But yes, he's still the the same person. I I guess it's what do you mean by who is Anakin? God, I feel like my philosophy professor. What do you mean by Anakin? [20:01] they're literally like bifrocated personalities. That's not what I think >> I definitely >> I definitely think that when the Emperor he had to say, [20:14] >> okay, you know, like I'm now this like the dark side empowered that part of him. Like he says in Jedi, you don't understand the power of the dark side. I >> right? >> And I believe that it feels real to him [20:26] really strong emotions that aren't necessarily correct, they feel real to me. That's my word. Like that's it's happening to me. It's happening inside my head. So to me, when like Anakin does a similar thing, when he says, "Oh, [20:41] Anakin, I killed Anakin Skywalker." He might really believe that, but that doesn't make it true. Well, like it. God, I feel like we're going down a of himself, right? Like he would never Yeah. I Yeah. I don't know. I don't want [20:57] Yeah. I Yeah. I don't know. I don't want to go too. What is it? Go deep. Go deep. do you think when you think Darth Black cape? All right. Hel scars. All right. Got it. Red lightsaber. Yeah. What do you think when [21:10] you think Anakin? Psychotic. Okay. Well, we could put that on the Vader side, too, right? I don't know. psychotic and super sexy like all people with BPD. >> Yeah. And and we also have to remember that he's obsessed with Padme. Vader is [21:23] Anakin was. So that kind of answers it there. see that which I guess kind of brings Go ahead. Well, I was just and what is really cool and what they have not explored with Vader too much and that I [21:36] wish they would in the Disney era is I think the Darth Vader that we saw in the think the Darth Vader that we saw in the original trilogy is way more Anakin Skywalker than the Vader that exists in those 20 years between episode 3 and [21:50] four that we got a little bit of a glimpse of in Kenobi. He's a far more >> I think five and six for sure >> in general empire Hope. Yeah. Um >> that that's why I think um if you you [22:03] know earlier we talked about the Vader comics, right? And that's I I just I because my friend Heather Antos like edited them and got this off to a good start, but the um those Vader comics always said, "Okay, so where does Vader [22:18] does he end at the start of Empire and how do we fill that in?" So the fact that like after he has this encounter with Luke and I am your, you know, and tries to get him to join him, Luke rejects him and then he spends the next [22:31] year like he meets up with Padme's old handmaidaidens who look like her and he has to really like he suppressed these memories of Padme for years. Like when he first became Darth Vader, he spent all this time trying to reach her in the [22:44] other realm and to raise the dead like the emperor said they could, right? And keep people living forever. And then becau and then you get all this leadup where you understand like you said uh Colton he is becoming more Anakin. It's [22:58] >> Yeah. >> That that comic where he meets Padme's didn't he like invite them back to like you want to see my >> girls want to see where my legs got cut [23:10] off? Awesome babe. Let's go. >> So if you stand here on the balcony like right over there that's uh that's where the separatist headquarters was. side hub. You know, I get a lot of power. Why do you have I built a temple [23:23] work, but I stayed here. It's nice. >> Why do you have all these pictures of you and McGregor with knives stabbed in them? Oh, >> do you just really hate Mulan Rouge that much? [23:37] >> No, he hates Christopher Robin. So going back right when you look at like the way Disney's handled Darth Vader for one thing you can look at the Force Awakens and you say okay so they had Kylo Ren obsessed with Vader and we brought back [23:51] the mask which is part of the sequel trilogy's whole thing about building on original trilogy nostalgia to tell a new story and it's really a series of movies about other movies and even how Kylo Ren always celebrates the legacy of Vader. I [24:04] always kind of felt like the way that Disney was perceiving the original characters was kind of embodied by how Kylo Ren deified him. What were your starting point? >> I just think it's hilarious that anyone [24:18] is that obsessed with their grandpa. That's just so funny to me. Like pick anyone and like you can worship I mean he feels the way about his grandpa that most women feel about Taylor Swift and that's [ __ ] hilarious to me. [24:33] his OWN LITTLE COSPLAY. >> I KNOW. HE HAS HIS own little Vader little helmet. If Vader didn't If he wasn't smart, he would have never worn it. And [24:46] Kylo Ren's like, "Yeah, but okay, the mask is good, but the voice isn't deep enough. Can you do something? I want to make it like when I breathe, I want it >> Such a dork. He's such a dork. Like Vader had to have [24:59] >> Yeah. Yes. He's a grandpa fanboy. That's all honest. I was good friends with my grandpa, too. My grandpa, I loved him. >> I keep identifying with the villains in this saga. [25:13] >> Yeah. >> Let me Let me love them. Let me love the Sith Lords. I them, man. >> I have a shrine to my grandfather. >> You can fix him. Let me get him with my therapist. [25:27] Shout out Dr. Bas. And let me get him on some Lexapro. And I could fix him. I >> Whitney definitely transitioned into a better help ad. I appreciate that. >> Yeah, >> very well done. Um, Liz, I'm sorry. [25:40] Whenever you want, >> Liz, feel free to watch. just talking so much. I'm so interested in what you have to say, Liz. I promise. >> No, just it's great. It's great. I was just gonna say I think it's an [25:53] especially regarding the dark side and the Sith because I think it's a it's something that the Sith want the apprentices to do, right? Uh Palpatine immediately gives Anakin a new name and he's supposed to take on that new [26:07] >> I think it's it's probably in part Anakin's personality and then it's also like by nature of what of how the Sith system works, right? is that they are supposed to because Kylo Ren although Kylo is not a Sith but but he says the [26:22] same thing right when he's talking to Han Solo um he says you know your son is gone right he he says the same thing and so it's like a mentality that they're get too far off the rails but one thing I think is really interesting about the [26:36] Jedi is that they're not supposed to sorry I don't know why that's happening um they're not supposed to >> we it's an emotional time for us all >> you're you're morphing into the Darth Vader voice pretty soon it's going to [26:49] >> Would you like some Lexapro? >> Yeah. Would you like some Lexapro? It up a little bit. >> Colton and I have a full supply right L. >> I HAVE TOO. YES. YOU'RE ON BOTH OF MY [27:05] MIDS, BABY. LET'S GO. Am >> I here who's only on finasteride? >> Crazy. >> Ryan drinks. [27:19] upstairs with different colors in it and I just go for the ones I feel. talking about the Jedi and um and that's where he got like after Tyler choose the [27:31] >> So, this is something I've always wondered about the Jedi and I've never gotten an answer. Why do they keep their last names? Because the entire thing is They're not supposed to have attachment, right? So, so why do they keep their [27:44] interesting when you compare it to something like the Sith where they're supposed to have a Sith name. >> Um, so maybe that's neither here nor there. But yeah, I think it's an interesting function of the way that the [27:58] Sith operate. And I think it's probably even more important for a Sith apprentice to do that than, you know, a Jedi because there's just the one. >> Well, and and they're severing from their humanity. And I think the Jedi are [28:12] way, just not like for their own personal benefit. But you're right, they themselves off, you know, they're like the Vulcans of the Star Wars universe. >> don't listen to your feelings and stay in this lane and don't obey your [28:27] >> Yeah. It's almost kind of backwards because then the Sith who >> you they have this like we we cut off but also you're supposed to embrace like passions and all that with the Sith. So yeah, great Jedi. [28:41] >> At least at least the Sith can get laid, dude. Again, why I can relate. I couldn't be a Jedi baby. I >> um actually Elar man was able to Okay, Republic. All right, so going back to >> a green baby. [28:56] >> Kanan Jerus has a green baby. >> Oh yeah, that's true. But by that point, the Jedi dogma was just kind of, you know, all over the place. They could look what happened to poor Devon and Shadow Lord. Anyways, [29:10] >> just Jedi are weird virgins and that that's okay. It's okay to be a weird little virgin. It's interesting how >> Yeah. So are their fans. >> I don't think Obi-Wan was I definitely think he and Satine smash. That's just [29:23] >> Obi-Wan absolutely [ __ ] hard. >> You cannot look like Ewan McGregor and not [ __ ] Like I'm sorry. He's too sexy. >> Yeah, he helloed there. Yeah, for sure. >> Oh, he helloed there for sure. He was in the club hall in there all night long. [29:39] >> All right. So, regarding this though, right? So, I don't think Vader hoed the last time he hoed there was definitely the night he had the dream penis after Mustafar. Did his dick get I don't think he has a penis. I don't [29:55] to. >> No, I doubt it. >> I want to ask you guys this. >> Go ahead. I keep we keep interrupting you. I'm sorry. That's okay. That's okay. Crucified for doing a video [30:08] offspring and everybody's like, "He got cut in half, [ __ ] idiot." And I'm like, "Um, he's got magic legs," to quote Pors Gump, so he could if he could >> I mean, he could have had a kid before that build himself his own cybernetic [30:25] penis and he could fill it with cybernetic. It would have been through Colton. people were right to criticize you for this. That's the dumbest take form of logic at all. >> Let's talk about Disney Star Wars [30:37] because it's on the thumbnail and the title and if people chime into this video live and they hear us talking about Darth Maul's weird robot penis, then they're going to click off the video and none of us get to keep our [30:49] Star Wars, right? Just going back going back 2015. Okay, we've we've talked about Kylo Ren, Vader, Fanboy, the comics. I mean, I've I hope you guys do you think that was the right way to go or were they like squandering this [31:03] character? Like I they could have easily turned those comics into a trilogy. What do you guys think about that? >> I making the comics canon. I I don't I I think that was a bad idea. I I think they should have kept the comics like [31:17] legends type stuff or, you know, just fun stories or at least you can say it's canon, but please, for the love of God, don't shackle yourself to that and make it to where, oh, well, we can't do this movie now because we covered the entire [31:30] 20 years between this episode and this episode all in this comic line. >> Come on, man. He just They keep putting Vader in comics and video games and Disney Plus shows. It's like, put him in a movie. What is wrong with you? That's [31:44] like buying Marvel and not using Spider-Man. Like, how do you buy Star Wars and not put Darth Vader in a movie for the last 10 years? >> Especially Christinson's down. He's so down to clown. He would come back in a [31:58] heartbeat, dude. Like, I [ __ ] love that guy. And he's so came back for this role >> for this. Like, he Rick Morannised all >> Liz, what does he smell like? >> Yeah. What does he smell like? [32:16] that what you >> He smells good. So there's good in him. >> On him. On him. >> On him. On him. On him. You're right. >> I I've been my entire existence. And I used to have my entire bedroom just [32:33] plastered in Anakin and Padme. Just plastered. Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, shout out because you awakened so many bisexuals together as a couple. >> That's really sweet. And I don't want to go any further down that pathway. [32:49] go any further down that pathway. >> So, no, no, only because um you know, >> So, no, no, only because um you know, family show. I don't bisexuality, but just because I don't want to hear about YOUR SEXUAL [33:03] AWAKENING. THAT'S YOU DON'T HAVE TO HEAR ABOUT THAT. You don't have to hear about >> Oh, fantastic. Fantastic. >> There's been an awakening. Have you felt >> Have you felt it? >> I'm sorry. Go right. Like, you don't [33:16] talking about that. You can >> Oh, I will be talking about it no matter >> No, no, no. We don't have to keep up with the comics. It's fine. I'm not trying to like own the conversation here. It's a It's a We're banding things [33:29] around. But I will say those comics are great. And Star Wars has done a thing like there was this Ahsoka audio novel narrated by Ashley Xeen. Shout out Ashley Xeen who also gave a lot of Star Wars fans their sexual awakening. Um [33:42] >> and she also smells good. >> You Oh my gosh. You all you smell the >> Holy [ __ ] >> Jesus Christ. >> You're just you're sniffing the whole crew, man. I'm jelly as hell. I want to [33:54] >> I'd like to see Liz in a press junket just kind of going up behind them. Who's going up? >> Love Rosario Dawson, but uh Ashley >> Yeah. [34:08] >> if I say she also smells good because I did meet her as well, >> And now I got to make sure that if we ever meet in person, I'm like so clean. I have the best perfume on. I do research about what your what your [34:23] aromatic tastes are in advance to make sure you think the same of me. Holy [ __ ] Now, is that the BPD or is that just how you are with people? You want >> No, that's the BPD. I have a deep need to please others. Uh, and another thing [34:37] I was going to say about the Anakin thing is very similarly to that, the way that he kind of uh [ __ ] What was I just going to say? [ __ ] Sorry. >> Oh, man. We're going to watch you until [34:52] >> You have to. No, you have to wait. >> I'll transition as soon as you remember. of stuff to talk about. All right. So, yes, it would have been really cool to the comics did great is it would be really hard to have a Darth Vader film [35:06] where he just goes around murdering people because Vader like we saw in Maul Shadow Lord not an interesting character by himself. He is an evil guy and until the events of A New Hope like Colton you were so on the money he he was a static [35:20] character. He fully committed himself to this and then when he realizes he has a son, it kind of reawakens his love for Padme after all these years, which is >> Yeah. >> So, the thing the comic that was really [35:32] smart was giving him a counter with Dr. Afra with Ochi and all these other side characters who he was talking to. >> I that could have worked as a movie, but slaughtering Jedi would have um kind of gotten old quick. Go ahead, Whitney. [35:44] >> It would have been really cool though. It would have been really cool. >> It would have been cool. >> Yeah. Uh, I just remembered what it was. Okay, so another symptom of BPD which definitely could explain Anakin's shift [35:57] in characteristics and behavior is this is interestingly not something I've ever had a problem with because uh I really like my own personality a lot. But uh a lot of people with BPD, another huge symptom is an unstable sense of self [36:13] where you go around and when you meet new people, you mirror them because you want so badly for them to like you in the same way that I would totally make sure I smelled really really good before I met Liz. Uh like that's a that's an [36:29] example of it. like I will go so far out of my way to like make sure that I'm a version of myself that other people enjoy. And I think that that's what [36:41] happens with Anakin when he starts hanging out with Palpatine is that when he was hanging out with his Jedi friends, he was mirroring them and he was like, "Oh yeah, no, I'm I'm doing these things for you so that you'll like [36:53] me because I'm un unsure about my own personality. So I'm going to follow I'm going to follow the rules." >> He wants to prove that he is the the Jedi Council. He has all the he and he even says, I think it's in part two. [37:10] I I'm not right. I I shouldn't want things like I do. Like he says, go >> He's also And I swear to God, this is not supposed to be a pun, but he's also masking. Vader totally is masking when he's out at like talking to other like, [37:24] you know, Imperial admirals and stuff. He is totally putting on a show. Like I think he is like way more like, >> you know, emo sad Anakin guy when he's just in his chambers like thinking about that or whatever. you know, in New Hope, [37:37] it's interesting because he isn't the boss, right? Like he's treated just like as the muscle and and he probably was at that point. I don't know how much Lucas Vader wasn't even Luke's dad till the second draft of Jedi or till the second [37:50] second draft of Jedi or till the second draft of Empire. But there is a a thing with Vader where especially in the Disney era, I don't we showed this clip earlier from Rogue One, right? And the everyone talks [38:05] One they mean they love the hallway fight because it's incredible. It's what >> exactly what I mean. >> Yeah. And and it's great and you know hallway and the way he fights in Maul Shadow Lord. There's no wasted energy. [38:18] Every sword is ex every saber is exactly where it needs to be. But man, I hate that scene with him and Orson Krennic earlier. I think that really takes away from that later scene in the hallway fight where he's talking to him and [38:31] gives him orders and makes a joke. That to me is Anakin shining through. I don't know, Liz. What do you think? We've been >> I know people people hate that line. I mean, I think this is an interesting thing about Anakin, too, is he kind of [38:46] always has that duality to him, right? I mean, he says really goofball things. Like I I'm re-watching the Clone Wars right now. Um, and obviously that's, you right now. Um, and obviously that's, you know, but I I think he has that same [39:01] duality to him where he'll be, you know, kind of corny honestly at times and then he'll turn around and beat Rush Clovis almost to death. Um, and so that is that's kind of his where he where he lives emotionally. And I think that's an [39:16] trying to mirror Palpatine when he's with Palpatine and mirror the Jedi when he's with the Jedi, the undercurrent of that to in my view is like Anakin's always angry. Um and I think like that is his underlying like feeling is it's [39:32] anger always underneath. So he fails to appease the Jedi because he's angry. Um, and even with Palpatine, I mean, his knee-jerk reaction when Palpatines's like, "I'm a Sith." is to whip out his lightsaber and be like, "Okay, well, you [39:48] know, probably he wants to kill him because that's kind of Anakin's MMO." >> Whipping out my lightsaber is always my first instinct, baby. >> All right. Hey, >> well done. I think that Anakin, the [40:01] and I love Hayden Christensen and what he did with the character, but I I think, and you guys can tell me who who's his voice actor in Clone Wars, but >> he I think that that version of Anakin, >> I can much more easily see being Vader. [40:17] Like, I can watch that character and then be like, "Oh, you're Darth Vader." >> he kills people from behind. He Yeah, he's pretty much >> But even just the way that Anakin kind of carries himself and like the the base [40:30] and his voice like it's all just more like oh I can see that being Vader. original trilogy like if I'm watching it I'll think could I see Hayden Christensen like saying that it's like they are to write to like go back to [40:43] what we were saying it is like they're two different characters but Clommore's >> I think kind of merges them a little more. Yeah. Well, and Dave Fon at this point spent way more time with Anakin, like hours-wise, than George Lucas did. [40:55] I mean, that's why I kind of go by what he said. And just real quick, I want to just let you guys know, I want to remind you that we are having our May the 4th now through the end of the month to celebrate Mandalorian and Grou, we have [41:08] Galaxy collection. These are shirts like, give me just a second. Good soldiers follow orders, which is one of my favorites. I have friends everywhere. Robert Downey Jr. Doom. This is a new one. Docking Bay 94. Scum and villain. [41:23] Welcome. The apprentice lives. The hello there. Colton designed this one. The shirt, which I love. >> Uh, we also have a second. >> This one is so killer. The Darth Maul [41:36] Japanese inspired shirt. I love that design. No one's ever really gone with Jedi. Of course, classics like original trilogy and many, many more. So, right Crush store member, we have lots of benefits that are going to kick in this [41:51] month, including we're going to do a live stream to uh next week. It's going to be for everybody, not just members to start us off where we do like a live rewatch of X-Men. And if you're on our $5 tier, you also [42:03] that you can get 30% off all Farway Galaxy merchandise. And there's other store perks and memberships. Uh, some of you guys have already joined and some of are part of our $100 tier, which is awesome. We're going to do a Q&A live [42:17] stream with you soon. We got to figure out how to set that up. But speaking of before we even started. Christian Ford gave us a $500 super chat, which is just >> That's so great. It [42:31] >> really nice. And he said, "Hey guys, rocking out here in Daytona at Rockville. Guns and Roses are headlining tonight. So jealous. I've wanted to see DNR my whole life. That is awesome. >> That's amazing. [42:44] someone he who would mosh with him. Is right now. He can't be on >> Tommy. Oh, Tommy would mosh with youn >> And he won't be able to watch our episode live, but he wanted to say hey. [42:57] And Vader should be given a miniseries where we see him relentless and possibly where we see him relentless and possibly uh the four. >> He just wants a movie, baby. But they could take those Vader stories. [43:11] audio novel about Ahsoka, they did just kind of ignore it when they did the that series and just I think they should do this anyways. Just take all these the the Star Wars stories and give Vader his movies. [43:24] More. >> And Joe Bart alone gave us 20 bucks, also generous. Thank you. said, "I'll die on this hill." If Star Wars had the courage, edited to make an R-rated adaptation of the novel Red Harvest, it [43:38] would be an instant billion dollar. Forest Zombies and Sith Academy plus set thousands of years before the Skywalker saga equals gold. I've never heard of >> No. >> Red Harvest. [43:50] >> No. Tell me the story. Papa >> for Oh, I don't know it. Liz, are you know Red Harvest. >> Yeah, Blue Harvest is different. It would make sense. um to do anything set in the distant past. I mean, apparently [44:03] James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi movie is probably not going to happen, but uh Kathleen Kennedy seemed to like it along with all the other stuff she had light >> to I I feel bad [44:15] >> eye rolling at the Oh, okay. >> No, it's okay. Jordan Freeman gave us while the Sith are Romulans. Couldn't agree more. Go ahead, Cole. >> I I want to say the the idea for the Vader miniseries, great idea, just not [44:27] as a miniser. Do that movie, man. I mean, that would be awesome. Like, seeing Vader like being dispatched on missions by Palpatine and he's having to >> slaughter innocent people and rebels and track down a Jedi and you could [44:44] >> The hero is going to go slaughtering innocent people that >> No, but he's not the hero. He's just the main character of the film. And you can see him like struggling and having dreams about Padme and visiting her [44:59] tomb. And you can tell an interesting sto like they did with Joker. Like you just make him like a somewhat sympathetic character, which I think is to be a good guy and we know he turns to the light side. So I think that's [45:13] totally something you could do with the Darth Vader character. need that other character with him. You're Dr. Afra. or somebody else exception here I think is that time between the trilogies sorry the time [45:28] between the films of the trilogy and right after the 2017 series did a great job like Vader's first mission was to kill a Jedi who had quit the order and steal his saber so he could turn the kyber crystal red right that era to me [45:41] is really interesting in fact there's a another novel it's not canon that takes think it's called Dark Lord Rising which is also great because it shows like robot legs and stuff like that. Like he's trying to learn. [45:55] Maul's just like, >> right? >> Yeah. Just kind of walking away like Homer. And then Oh, but what if Maul and Kenobi had to like team up to fight? >> Oh, that'd be sick. [46:09] fun. >> I don't know. I I at this point I wouldn't like that just because we've already had our pre-new Hope Vader and Kenobi fight. And if it turns out these [ __ ] were fighting like once a year. [46:22] do it now. Exactly. They can't do That's because now you just really can't do it because it's too much. >> They they squandered it. >> Let me ask you guys this just to bring [46:35] it all back home to the thumbnail and the title of the video when the prequels This is way better than the title and thumbnail of the video. This is great. I mean, I've learned so much about Vader and it's not done yet. and Lexrobe [46:47] >> Lexoprobe and lots of other, you know, drugs and you guys have learned about my Tupperware full of full of me ask you this and Liz, we'll start with you because I know you have to [46:59] leave like here in a few minutes. Um, when the prequels came out, a lot of fans who didn't like the prequels said, "Well, it ruined my childhood. I can't look at Vader. When I look at Vader, I'll see this whiny teenager." you know, [47:13] um, that's that was their take on it. I think it's aged a lot better than that prequels. But given everything that Disney has added to the cannon, and I'm everything we talked about in the pre-recorded part at the start of the [47:28] video. Do you think that Disney has made Vader better or worse, >> Liz? I mean, I would definitely say that Disney has not ruined Vader. And I I will admit [47:43] not ruined Vader. And I I will admit that I it would take a lot for me to feel like, oh, Vader is ruined or Vader has become like a disappointing character or a bad character because I just love Anakin. Um, and Vader um any [47:58] iteration of Anakin I love. So, iteration of Anakin I love. So, has it made it better? about Clone Wars, right? And that predates obviously Disney's acquisition [48:12] season. >> Um, and I feel like Clone Wars is the >> Um, and I feel like Clone Wars is the the peak of exploring that character. [48:24] Um, so has it made it I mean I wouldn't say I look at Disney Star Wars and I'm say I look at Disney Star Wars and I'm like wow it has totally improved Anakin as a character. >> Well they definitely didn't ruin him in [48:37] of the Jedi because now when you see these teenagers celebrating with teddy you dumb asses messed this up. We know what's going to happen in 30 years." But right? Uh Colton or Whitney, whoever wants to answer the question next. [48:51] >> Have they Mine's quick. Have they ruined V? How could they have ruined him? They haven't done anything with him that worth mentioning. I They They put him in a bunch of cartoons and comic books and a Disney Plus show that nobody watch. [49:03] >> He's so dismissive of these other media though. Like I love these comic books. The shows he's been in are f like Rebels and stuff like they're fine, but he's >> I love comic books. I love watching Rebels. I don't like the idea of doing [49:19] an animated show of James Bond. James Bond belongs on the big screen. Darth Vader belongs on the big screen. You don't like James Bond Jr. >> Fine. James Bond Jun Bond babies and like Muppet Babies, but they're all [49:33] >> He wasn't even James Bond's son. James Bond was his uncle, but for some reason Anyway, sorry. I >> That's a great point. Whitney, what do >> I'm going to answer it uh the way that my therapist would really want me to and [49:46] say that it's not black and white. It's not that they ruined him or that they made him amazing. It's something in between. There's nuance to the situation and I can see that because I'm in treatment. [50:01] >> Thank you. Thank you. >> You're still Oh my god, you're so healthy and I bet you SMELL AMAZING RIGHT NOW. >> I don't think they did anything to hurt the character though. I think everything [50:14] >> like even Okay, Colton, let's just pretend like we're in a land where Obi-Wan Kenobi, you take what's in the show, you cut it down to two hours, worse character. In fact, >> no, it was awesome. [50:27] he says, "Look, you don't need to feel bad. I killed Anakin Skywalker." Right up there. I mean, that's one of the best moments in any Star Wars TV show >> when he says, "Dude, I I was on the verge of tears." Cuz I mean I I was a [50:42] years old when Revenge of the Sith came out. And when he goes, "I am not your failure, Obi-Wan." I was like, "Oh [ __ ] I love that line." Disney and I know I'm being an ass about [50:56] Disney in in terms of what they've done with everything they have done with Vader has been awesome. Like what they do with him in Rebels, awesome. What shows in Kenobi has been awesome. And [51:08] that's what makes it sting even more is that I'm Dude, when I talk about Star Wars with like family members and stuff that I used to watch the original six that I used to watch the original six movies with as a kid, they are so like [51:22] not tapped in to what's happening right now in Star Wars because it's when you now in Star Wars because it's when you make it a movie that is where the masses are. Everybody goes to see the movie. >> Let's see about that. Yeah. [51:36] >> Like like I was talking to my my grandma on my dad's side like she's who showed me Star Wars for the first time and we you know she can talk those first six movies all damn day. But then if I bring up the Kenobi series she's like and what [51:51] that's on Netflix. No it's not on well how do I watch that? But I don't have What channel is that? You know, it's just like and I know their their their target audience isn't grandmothers, but >> it's just it should be [52:04] start that movement. >> They're telling so many cool stories that they're just >> Hold on real quick. Liz, do you have to >> It was so fun. >> Great. We're gonna wrap up in a second [52:17] coming. >> Bye. back again. Oh my gosh. Oh, I TOOK ONE NOW. HITTING BUTTONS LIKE CRAZY. COLTON, out. >> No, it was it was bad. I was going to [52:32] leg, but I I shouldn't say >> nowful. I uh nothing nothing makes me feel older than hearing the sentence, the original six movies. [52:46] >> As I said it, I was like, God, I'm going to get for that. your perception and your time. That's absolutely fine. >> I felt old here. You were eight when Revenge of the Sith came out. I was [52:58] eight when The Phantom Menace came out. >> Oh my god. I was 19. Shut up both of you. I I'll show you a little age. I I remember having on my shelf and it drove my OCD crazy. We're covering all the mental illnesses today. I had the VHS [53:13] Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and I was just waiting so I could put in my my Revenge of the Sith. And then they never released Revenge of the Sith on VHS. Then I had to buy all [53:25] >> No. Well, it I think it had >> Wow. release. >> I remember um I remember waiting though "Well, I'll wait until the third one's out and I'll get all six, right, of the [53:39] DVDs." And then what happened is the cool big long box sets were no longer in fashion and they were like designed like in smaller clamshell cases and stuff. >> We have another chat real quick. Joe Barton gave us 20 [53:52] bucks. Just a second. Red Harvest, he clarified, is a novel by Joe Shrieber, a mature horror novel about the origin of force zombies, which is a strain at the Slytherin Force users having to deal with an evil dead style zombie break. [54:07] >> dude, that sounds cool as hell. I'm going to check that book. >> Have to give us another 20 bucks to tell us that, but thank you. And Phil Rumba gave us three Australian dollars. Said, "Thanks for another fantastic show. Love [54:20] >> Dude, your point. >> A Star Wars zombie movie with a bunch of zombie stormtroopers, which we kind of saw in uh Ahsoka, by the way. that >> be so cool. And like that go in their [54:34] >> Yeah. >> Wait, was that in Rebels 2? Didn't the yes, it's been in the animated. >> But imagine that like a kid finds a through like the these zombie stormtroopers. That would be awesome. [54:49] >> But for all we know, that's what the Taoiti movie was about. And we'll never >> And we'll never For all we know, the Hunt for Ben Solo was actually a zombie. >> How could he be alive? How could he be alive? [55:03] >> That's how we have to find out. Where's your whimsy? Come on. We have to hunt for him first and then we'll get the answer. That's cause and effect. Come >> Whitney, I got Whitney, I got an important question for you. Um, we're [55:17] We have to wrap up. I didn't mean to cut you off. I'm sorry. >> Here. Wait. Okay. Ready? One, two, >> Damn it, Ryan. >> You went the wrong way.
