[0:01] you want the job or not how's the pay [0:04] not great but the hours are worse hello [0:08] everyone today I want to rent a little [0:10] bit about problems surrounding mappa [0:12] Studios who in recent years were getting [0:14] a lot of attention sometimes for the [0:16] good reasons such as production on many [0:19] popular animes and sometimes for bad [0:21] reasons since for a lot of people this [0:23] animated Studio became pretty much the [0:25] worst example of the industry currently [0:27] the studio got into his scandle because [0:29] a lot of animators expressed their [0:31] unhappiness with the way Studio treats [0:33] its workers they aren't getting paid [0:36] enough and not given enough time to [0:37] finish the work meanwhile Studio gets a [0:39] [ __ ] ton of money and Praises in social [0:41] media and oh boy let me tell you mappa [0:44] doesn't deserve any of the Praises [0:46] definitely not after working conditions [0:48] they made for their animators and [0:50] apparently it was so bad a couple of [0:52] them even had a meltdown on social media [0:54] which we'll discuss today and try to [0:56] figure out what led to all of that hope [0:58] you enjoy so mappa Studios Japanese [1:02] animated Studio that was founded 12 [1:04] years ago on June 14th for those who [1:06] don't know by the way mapa is an acronym [1:08] morama animation produce project [1:10] association yes I know shocker right [1:12] it's not just some random word [1:14] established by Masa mama I hope I [1:17] pronounce his name correctly co-founder [1:18] of mad house by the way ever since being [1:21] founded in 2011 Studio worked on many [1:24] projects such as yurio nice zombie lens [1:27] Saga dororo Attack on Titan God of high [1:29] school juuk kaisen Vin Lans Saga [1:31] chainsaw man and hell's paradise wait [1:35] really they work on this crap you're [1:36] right it's hers and it's [ __ ] a little [1:40] bit about how Studio was founded I swear [1:42] it's going to be important later [1:44] basically back in day Masa maryama was [1:46] working on the anime this corner of the [1:48] world which basically due to financial [1:51] difficulties was stuck in production [1:52] Hill in order to somehow fix those [1:54] troubles and get this movie going Mas [1:57] establishes mppa and hopes to finally [1:59] released this film however spoiler alert [2:02] that didn't really help anime still was [2:04] released only 5 years later still [2:07] because of difficulties to raise funds [2:09] unfortunately in 2016 Masa Mama resigned [2:13] and Studio CEO became manabu otsuka who [2:16] technically did fix the financial [2:18] problem but not in the way that is best [2:20] for his workers this guy is anti [2:22] Charisma he is the exact opposite of Riz [2:26] like this dude legitimately has less [2:29] game than someone that is asleep because [2:31] starting somewhere here studio will face [2:33] multiple allegations after multiple [2:36] allegations of not being able to paid [2:38] enough to their workers or forcing them [2:40] to work extra because of the obscenely [2:42] stupid deadlines and not letting them to [2:44] see their family yes this joke is pretty [2:46] popular right now but as you know every [2:48] joke has a little bit of Truth in it and [2:51] now we cut to the present day and [2:53] current boycott of mappa animators by [2:55] the way little note I'm going to use the [2:56] word boycott even though technically [2:58] it's not always boycot because [3:00] occasionally those protests are pretty [3:02] quickly resolved but this is one of the [3:04] few boycots that are actually impacting [3:06] the viewers the last episode of anime [3:08] Juju du kaisen that recently came out [3:10] had some issue in it basically episode [3:13] 17 of season 2 came out and caused a lot [3:15] of controversy sure a lot of people said [3:17] it's a masterpiece and a lot of people [3:19] said it's ugly and it's not of been [3:20] worth watching I'm here of course not [3:22] going to voice my very important opinion [3:25] that everybody wants to hear of course [3:27] I'm just going to say that this episode [3:28] cut my attention because the animators [3:30] themselves said that this episode is [3:32] going to be released unfinished so [3:35] imagine faces of all the people who [3:37] liked it who now know that it might have [3:39] been even better especially when it's [3:42] supposedly only 30% that made it to the [3:44] final cut it could have looked so much [3:47] better but apparently there was just no [3:49] time because of the pouring schedule so [3:52] basically animators who went on strike [3:54] complained that the working conditions [3:55] in studio are far from being good I [3:58] can't work here for a penny under 65 I'm [4:00] sorry the thing is that is not even the [4:02] first time animators complain about [4:05] their job and not only in Twitter but [4:07] also in interviews yes last time was [4:09] when mappa worked on project for Netflix [4:12] when animators were paid only [4:15] 3,800 Yen per cut that is [4:19] $34 and keep in mind that people who [4:21] complain are people who also works on [4:24] the Cinematic Masterpiece we all love [4:26] like people who should be cherished for [4:29] making such amazing scenes now complain [4:32] that they're forced to work over time [4:33] and not getting paid enough for their [4:34] work it's especially weird to hear [4:36] considering budgets of most anime you [4:39] watch are pretty much the same like [4:41] occasionally their exceptions were [4:42] they're a little bit bigger but mostly [4:44] they're stay within the same field [4:47] others Anime Studio don't seem to face [4:49] such a huge backlash that is by the way [4:51] statement from one punchman character [4:53] design so I'm pretty sure he knows what [4:55] he's talking about it is important to [4:57] mention that not all animators are [4:59] complaining some people are saying that [5:01] the work in J kaisen has been like the [5:02] best experience of their life but [5:05] there's still a lot of irrefutable proof [5:07] that a lot of people are unhappy on the [5:10] other hand this is probably possibly due [5:11] to animators working in groups so a lot [5:14] of animators basically work on different [5:15] parts of the anime and they kind of have [5:18] different schedules and occasionally [5:20] possibly even having different working [5:22] conditions you know the [ __ ] was just [5:24] business right still some of those [5:26] situations from a side view look awful [5:28] because for example director of the [5:30] mentioned episode of juu kaisen pretty [5:33] much had a meltdown on Twitter mostly [5:35] blaming himself for how bad the episode [5:37] was mapa of course occasionally does [5:40] give him something in return you know to [5:41] stop the complaints like for example [5:43] when they started working in chainsaw [5:45] man they had to build a whole different [5:47] Studio to like cancel the allegations [5:49] however despite opinions of many people [5:52] protests aren't always effective for [5:54] example after a group of animators that [5:56] worked on the tack on Titan complain too [5:58] much the the next group that was [6:00] starting to work in juken season got [6:03] updated contracts one of the new aspects [6:05] of which basically prevented animators [6:08] from ever complaining outside the studio [6:10] nice logic right your animators are [6:12] complaining that they aren't getting [6:14] paid enough why do you cry what should [6:16] you do fix those issues just force them [6:19] not to speak about it so none of this [6:20] will be leaked to the public it's just [6:23] business the thing is what people don't [6:24] realize about the animation it not only [6:26] costs money but also time and talent the [6:29] thing is because of that some scenes [6:31] literally come out of out of the expense [6:33] of some workers thing is we to kaisen [6:36] especially that's kind of looks like [6:38] what's happening because many animators [6:40] stated that they're practically begged [6:42] to give him not only time to relax but [6:44] to actually finish the job because [6:46] apparently many episodes have been made [6:49] practically minutes before being aired I [6:51] guess it is pointless to say that all [6:53] their request were denied by production [6:55] committee like always the issue is it's [6:57] all could have been prevented the price [6:59] CH Studio don't start working on anime [7:01] out of nowhere they always not only [7:03] schedule plan the due dates and stuff [7:06] but also plan how many people are going [7:07] to work on a certain anime in mappa they [7:09] have about 300 animators and [7:11] occasionally they work on several anime [7:12] at the same time which is I guess [7:14] another weird decision because for [7:16] example the animators that work on [7:18] Attack on Titan and animators that work [7:20] on jjuu kaisen are two different [7:21] animation teams so I'm not entirely sure [7:24] how nobody saw those issues coming [7:26] especially when something like this [7:27] already appeared in m or maybe like [7:30] always nobody cared [7:33] because business as usual on top of that [7:36] manabu Uka in in a recent interview [7:38] explained that the reason why studio is [7:40] working on so many anime at the same [7:41] time is because they're planning to get [7:44] a bigger name this way like the plan is [7:47] to gain popularity by working on as any [7:49] animation as possible and apparently [7:52] complaining animators were not exactly [7:54] part of this plan which explains the [7:57] whole story with updated contracts [7:59] however if you're wondering how things [8:01] got that far well there might be two [8:03] reasons that is money and money those [8:07] issues even though sound pretty simple [8:08] are actually a little more complex for [8:10] example I can see when problems may [8:12] appear when Studio decides to work on [8:14] four anime at the same time this way [8:16] while running for money and fame greedy [8:19] Studio forgets that the animators are [8:21] people too actually but I mean after all [8:23] what's the problem I mean they're going [8:25] to rent full a little bit just quit and [8:28] we're going to hire new and Ator slick [8:30] but the fame from animation stays oh [8:33] yeah by the way about new animators in [8:36] addition some animators complained that [8:38] upon arriving into mappa for first time [8:40] they haven't received proper training [8:41] and pretty much just other people they [8:43] worked with taught them how to do it all [8:46] again I don't have an animation studio [8:49] but I feel like that's not how it's [8:50] supposed to be let me tell you something [8:53] kid I made more [ __ ] money for these [8:56] [ __ ] than you could make in a [8:58] Million [ __ ] years actually one of [9:01] the animators even also said that MAA [9:03] pretty much is interested in pulling new [9:05] ambitious young animators into the [9:07] industry but upon arriving to the studio [9:10] they have to face an incredibly stupid [9:12] scheduling system not only killing their [9:14] talent but also Ambitions in the process [9:17] I mean it's not very good when animators [9:19] decline the job as soon as they hear [9:20] about scheduling right but also the [9:23] issue is how Japanese industry of [9:25] Animation even works basically when the [9:27] animation studio needs a budget for [9:29] certain anime or film or Etc they work [9:32] with production committee I'm really [9:34] oversimplifying it but basically that's [9:36] a bunch of different companies or people [9:38] who give them money so they can start [9:39] working on the anime in order to receive [9:41] this money back multiply by a thousand [9:43] not only from money goed from airing [9:45] this anime but also from Toys figurines [9:47] pretty much everything that people buy [9:49] that is related to this anime on paper [9:51] that does sound smart a lot of people [9:52] throw in money so a studio can start [9:54] working in the anime viewers are happy [9:56] and the investors get their money back [9:58] multiplied from their success however in [10:00] reality as a result you got to deal with [10:02] a bunch of investors demanding certain [10:04] quality time of release and everything [10:07] you once knew including yourself they [10:09] mold you basically it can become a whole [10:11] complicated mess since each of the [10:13] investor can now influence production in [10:16] some instances it can be avoided of [10:18] course for example during production of [10:19] chain so man mappa decided to cover the [10:22] whole funding themselves however I'm not [10:24] sure they're going to do it too often [10:26] since it kind of backfired because even [10:28] mapa executive admitted that even though [10:30] chainsaw man made a lot of money they [10:32] expected it to be a little bit more [10:34] profitable in the end they went back to [10:36] the usual system with production [10:38] committee which again set in a realistic [10:41] due date which again push animators to [10:43] work beyond their limits and in overtime [10:45] which is really really sad you know [10:50] Joseph Stalin once said there are no [10:53] Irreplaceable people and I feel like [10:55] even though a lot of people are going to [10:57] deny it I pretty sure they're all [10:59] agreeing with him and I guess that is it [11:01] for today tell me in the comments if you [11:02] like this video and if you would like to [11:04] see more content like
