> Source: [The TRUTH About WoW M+ Meta Comps (12.0.5)](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Py8sHVxRpvA)

## Summary

This video follows a World of Warcraft Mythic+ group as they intentionally play a meta composition for the season, exploring the real-world challenges and trade-offs of chasing the meta. The group discusses their experiences with survivability, class balance, and the pressure to swap specs, offering insights into whether playing meta is worth it for enjoyment and performance.

### Key Points

- **Intentional Meta Play** [00:57] — The group deliberately chose to play a meta composition for Mythic+ this season, despite not initially maining meta specs, to experience the benefits and drawbacks firsthand.
- **Meta Comp Composition** [01:37] — The chosen comp includes Brewmaster, Resto Druid, Frost Mage, Unholy Death Knight, and Demonology Warlock, based on popularity and synergy, with abilities to handle curses and remove impairing effects.
- **Risk of Nerfs** [03:44] — The group anticipated nerfs to Demonology, the new spec, and prepared for a potential swap, but the actual nerfs hit Frost Mage's survivability instead, highlighting the unpredictability of meta shifts.
- **Frost Mage Squishiness** [04:24] — Frost Mage proved to be too squishy in high keys, with Marceline dying frequently despite using defensives, leading to discussions about swapping specs.
- **Weakest Link Reality** [05:34] — In any comp, one spec is statistically the weakest; the issue is not damage but survivability and quality of life, as seen with the Frost Mage versus Warlock or Death Knight.
- **Synergy and Compensation** [06:15] — Group composition should cover each other's weaknesses, like Frost Mage excelling at cleave while others struggle with spread AoE, emphasizing the importance of synergy over raw meta strength.
- **Personal Experience with Weakness** [06:30] — The narrator recalls playing Brewmaster when it was behind the meta, needing extra attention and feeling like a burden, illustrating the downside of off-meta play.
- **Experience vs Meta** [07:13] — Experience and practice can outweigh meta advantages; the group is pushing higher keys for the first time, and skill matters more than class choice.
- **Contingency Plan** [07:40] — Marceline plans to switch to Augmentation Evoker if Frost Mage becomes unplayable, but will stick with Frost until around 18-19 keys, acknowledging the limits.
- **Meta Isn't Everything** [10:12] — Meta specs have advantages, but they aren't sufficient for top performance; experience and practice are crucial, and players should play what they enjoy.

### Conclusion

Playing a meta comp in Mythic+ comes with real trade-offs, including survivability issues and the constant threat of nerfs. Ultimately, meta isn't a substitute for skill and experience, and players should prioritize enjoyment while being aware of the risks.

some meta specs. Hell yeah, man. Going to be fun. We just need to pick some that works well together. You are saying frost mage though, right? Oh yeah, I love it and it's finally a meta spec. Going to be sweet.
Man, I used everything on that pool. Had nothing left. I thought that was defensive zone. Dude, what did they do to mage man? >> [laughter]
>> Yeah, I think I have to swap to something else. everyone thinks, people keep asking it. It's not a discussion of play what you want or have fun. Don't worry about the meta. We say this all the time and this
time it's not about that. Our Mythic Plus group has made its goal to deliberately play meta. None of us actually started to main specs that were meta when the patch started at least in our rating guilds, but we had a chat
early on about doing something different for this season of Mythic Plus. We wanted to intentionally play a meta comp to see how it is knowing full well it has its risks when it gets nerfed. This is that story and how playing meta
affects your overall enjoyment of the game and whether you should do it as game and whether you should do it as well.
raider.io teams, brewmaster, resto druid, frost mage, unholy, and demonology are definitely at the top here. That's based on popularity, right? Right and they seem to work real well. Well, yeah. Between mage and druid you
have to curse the spells for stuff like windrunner spire abomination boss and bit of sorrow and mister name here spell. I think this comp is great because we also all have a way to remove impairing effects. What do you mean?
Ascended you need to make those subjugator pulls with more than one at a time? Those will just destroy me if I have to heal all five of us with a debuff. And these happen back to back. I think we wipe if that happens. There's
also the gargoyle in Halls of Atonement, a bit more finicky, but with Tiger's Lust from the monk, we can always [music] get one person out. And so on and so forth. Our conversations went on in trying to understand the pros and
cons of the comp we would eventually end up on. Furo became our resident drunkard, with him being an experienced brewmaster and all. Absole wanted to heal with resto druid for the first time, and we all quietly nodded to
ourselves appreciating the generous sacrifice. Vantzy would be our unholy death knight, and if you look at his transmog choices, you can tell he's the biggest weeaboo of our group. I ended up playing demonology warlock because
finally I've been waiting for this for 10,000 years. And it looked like demo was on its way out, potentially be replaced by
devourer. With my raid main being devourer, I was the best candidate to do this and swap if the nerfs to demo would have been too harsh. Lastly, Marcelian discovered the taste of mage. Hey man, [laughter]
give me more of that shima, man. I got these cheeseburgers, man. So onwards we went, the five musketeers, clearing key after key in glorious fashion until
would be threatened first and foremost by nerfs to the most obvious broken spec by nerfs to the most obvious broken spec at the time, which was demonology. That was one of main reasons why I ended up on it because it was going to be very
unlikely the warlock would be nerfed or at the very least nerfed hard seeing as how it was the new spec of the expansion. This would leave the door open for us to keep on playing with me just easily swapping to my very geared
other character. But in reality, that's not what happened. And this is the first reason you should either avoid playing a meta class or at the very least be super aware of the potential risks if your goal is to push as high as you can.
Marceline was squishy. Well, frost mage was and we knew going into midnight that mages have had their defensives nerfed. But without pushing keys on beta before the season started, we didn't really know how it actually feels in very
demanding content. This couldn't go on, so we convened the council of the geeks. I'm tired of this [ __ ] man. Of your [ __ ] damage? No, of the international
economic forum. They ain't behind me anymore. I think he means the deaths. Yeah, man. I die through the god damn ice colds and all that. Like, I know but you bastards don't go through this [ __ ] Yeah, no, I'm good. I just immune
[ __ ] I got Heisenberg to cook me some juicy hellstones. I'm also good. Yeah, we need to figure something out. We're losing Marceline in more ways than one. Nobody knows the one shots I've seen and taken.
We are using our own examples here, but this can apply to any spec in any comp during any seasons of mythic plus and to some extent rating as well. It's not like we wouldn't be able to keep pushing with our comp and for now we still are,
but the discrepancy between the quality of life of the mage versus the warlock or death knight is very evident. You'll always have one spec in your group that is the weakest of them all. That's just how statistics work. No five specs are
always equal on all fronts. And I have to stress this. It's not the damage that's the problem. You can look at demonology and unholy and devour and think they do good. And by comparison, the frost mage is way behind. But there
are fights like the third boss in Magister's Terrace where both me and Vantus struggle with spread AoE while the frost mage can just naturally cleave two targets really, really well, compensating our weakness.
Which is really what a group composition and synergy should accomplish, covering each other's asses. I for one know what it's like to be the one that always needs the extra hand. In The War Within season two, I was playing brewmaster in
our group. Marceline was the discipline and discipline was meta. While our DPS friends were playing some versions of A tier or above specs. I constantly needed extra attention, extra externals, extra healing, different routes from what the
good tanks were doing. This all made me feel like I was dragging the group back. Of course, I was [ __ ] And this can be a lesson to a lot more people holding their friends hostage to play a meta spec instead of what people want. It's
Brewmasters back then were one key behind the top tanks and frost mages now behind the top tanks and frost mages now are already over 4K IO pushing into 22s. I'm saying this to play a bit of a devil's advocate. I think all of us are
first time while also pushing more aggressively for the first time. Experience makes a big difference whether it is a meta thing or just your one trick pony class you play every
season. So, what now? mage still? Yeah. Well, you say that, but I've seen
you and leveled with you on your augmentation. What's that about? Listen, I'm playing Frost Mage up until the point where I have no more options. I will die constantly. I cannot do damage. I hate that I'm capped and I want to
feel like I want to contribute to stuff. I always loved the concept of lizard, we talked about this I think too much. So no point on beating that hit that horse again. But augmentation as a
concept is really fun and I like how it works, how it plays and what it provides to the party. So in case we get to a point where I just have had it, I will bite the bullet and take the augmentation mantle. But still Frost
Mage up until, you know, I I would say we can go up until 18s, 19s. You know what's the funny part is I was looking at the top Frost Mage keys they're doing >> [laughter] >> That comp That comp is with an
power, right? So So maybe we can make that play the played with an augmentation. I think it was a bug or something. My damage was crazy good. Yeah, it was pretty Only on the DPS meters cuz on the logs it's not
Well, it is what it is, right? You need to get some ego feed from somewhere. But yeah, we're going to keep on Frost Maging for mean people are doing it. We just need to figure out exactly how we bypass the
moments where oh my god, your ice cold is not enough. Cuz I I know I know your way with a warlock and I'm not as squishy. I'm like, oh, I I my defense is we're all kind of trying to figure out exactly I think the prime example,
the most recent example would be from Skyreach when I died and I had the the bleed. I had I I got focused by the solar beam and then another bleed. The >> Yeah, yeah. So there was two bleeds on me plus the solar thingy. I didn't have
>> [music] >> I didn't have my invis, so it was like two bleeds and the solar thingy. You cannot live that I don't care I don't >> [laughter] >> Nothing will save you from that. But
that was just, you know, bad luck. So, yeah, play frost mage up until, you know, the the the limits are stretched to the max and then we can give it a try with augmentation. It's still level 83 or four, so I'm I'm not rushing it.
These are the woes of people trying to play meta specs. play meta specs. Yeah.
give people one side of the arguments for playing meta specs. I am sure every group and every player has their own thing that they need to sort out. But as video, we started from a point where frost mage was a clear meta spec to
where now it starts to not hold up to the others. Demonology was like that before the devouring nerfs and who knows if I will join Marceline on the swap The reality is that these things start
to matter at a point where we all know when to use our big defensives, the healer is fully prepped to heal the mechanic, and despite us playing more or less perfectly, it still isn't enough. And this is only in the defensive
talking point. Most people decide on meta long before this even becomes an issue and we mentioned this talking point in the past. Now we just have personal examples to give you to maybe relate to. Obviously, play what
you like and have fun with. And that can still be a meta spec and meta specs will always have an advantage over the rest. That's what being meta means. However, meta definitely isn't enough if you want to always be on your A game. You need
experience and practice and hopefully this gives that raid leader of yours this gives that raid leader of yours some insight as to why it doesn't matter if your group has unholy death knights for that weekly plus 10. And if you
really want more details into why I ended up on demonology in the first place, check out this video out. It goes a bit more in detail about my choice, are, and so on.
