seriously no don't get me wrong i
understand why there's a lot of appeal
for it one of the biggest being that
it's kind of a wish fulfillment fantasy
where you get to be the self-insert
who's surrounded by pretty girls and has
cool powers and gets to go on quests and
the like there's nothing wrong with that
i'm not saying that all isakai's are bad
in fact i've even watched some
shows that are isikai like konasuba and
re zero
and love them but what kind of confuses
me is the sheer
volume of it it honestly feels like
every new anime
season there's like another 50 isakai
shows just
there and people keep watching it and
that's fine
i'm not judging you watch as much as you
want but the thing that confuses me
about all of this
is the fact that it's so popular despite
the fact that on
a purely conceptual level isakai
is kind of boring to me
now what do i mean by that now usually
when you think of anisakai they have
several qualities
in common there's an overpowered hero
who's ridiculously strong from the start
he's also ridiculously generic
in both his looks and personality he's
quickly surrounded by a harem of girls
and he gets transported to this world to
just
do stuff maybe maybe there's a demon
lord in the end he needs to defeat i
don't know
i have many problems with these a lot
first off why are the main characters
always overpowered
yes i get it it's a power fantasy but
having characters who are ridiculously
powerful from the start
are a lot harder to make interesting
than if they were underpowered
stories need conflict characters
and conflict are the two main driving
forces behind stories behind
all stories and if you don't have those
things you
don't have a story and yet isakai seems
to love
not doing those things having an
overpowered character
can very easily drain the conflict and
in most cases in isakai this
is exactly what it does if every time
he's going to fight we know he's going
to win
then what's the point of the fight in
the first place
i'm not saying there's something wrong
with creating overpowered characters
there are plenty of them that are done
well i'm just saying that it takes a lot
more effort to create
interesting and lasting conflicts with
overpowered characters
it's a lot easier for me to lose
interest in these characters because i
feel like they don't have any stakes
whatsoever seriously there are so many
isakai premises out there that i read
and it and all it is is just wow
look how overpowered this character is
and that's it what's the story where's
the plot do they have any actual goals
here i just don't see what's so
interesting about a character being
crazy powerful for no reason
uh i mean maybe it's a comedy but
so far i don't really see what the joke
is now you'd think it'd be more
interesting for both the writer and the
audience to have an underpowered main
character instead
one who starts off weak but through hard
work and training gets stronger
and eventually is able to defeat the
demon king
and save the day in a satisfying way
you know like most video games but nah
we need that instant gratification don't
we boys
i mean seriously could you imagine if
video games work the same way
like you start the game only to be given
the most powerful item straight away
like
what's even the point of playing the
game anymore okay but
it's not just the fact that they're
super powerful there are ways to make
overpowered characters interesting which
i
talked about in my mary sue video which
i will link up in the corner but a lot
of the time isakai's don't do this
all they do is that they just kind of
get this huge and powerful monster
and have the main character defeat them
in a cool way
also the writer can show off how cool
they are from an ability that was
given to them i don't get it another
thing that the main characters always
seem to have
is the exact same personality the
personality of none
now in theory it's supposed to be that
they're as generic as possible so that a
wider range of audience members could
relate to them they're supposed to be as
relatable to as many people
as possible but that's not how stories
work
i don't really relate to a character's
personality in fact if i saw myself as
an anime character i'd probably hate him
what i do relate to are situations
if i see a character go through a
situation even in a fantasy world
that i feel like i can relate to that
makes me connect with them because i
feel like
yes i totally get that i understand what
you're going through and this still
applies
even if they have a completely different
personality to me sato kazma has a very
different personality to me
if i went to an isakai world suddenly i
would not have the guts to do any of the
things that he does
and yet he's one of the most relatable
protagonists
i've ever seen wanna know why it's
because he suffers
he is constantly landed with tons of
debt and bills he needs to pay he needs
to work his butt off just to be able to
start adventuring he has to live at the
stables in the beginning he has trouble
making companions who are basically
problem children who he constantly needs
to keep in line he feels and dies
constantly he has no real skills or
advantages
and he has a terrible reputation to be i
don't care
if kazuma is exactly like me or not but
when i see him have to go
through these mundane yet painful parts
of life
i can't help but feel like i get him so
knowing this there really is no excuse
to not give isakai protagonists real
personalities
now they obviously don't need to be as
exaggerated or as cultured as cosma is
but you can still make them feel more
like an actual person
than a cardboard cutout there is no
excuse for lazy characterization
the last thing that i wanted to mention
was about the entire reason they were
transported here in the first place
what are they supposed to do like they
get
reincarnated into this new world
now what i mean you could fight monsters
and get stronger
but there's no point because you're
already an overpowered badass so
most of the time all the main character
has in mind is i don't know
i guess i'll just explore and then they
do until they
stumble upon some kind of plot if the
main character doesn't have
any real goals from the beginning then
how can you expect me to care
like how is that interesting to anyone i
mean in many cases yeah sure there's
like
also a demon lord or whatever or
something like that who
has an army who's causing trouble
throughout the world
and that's who we need to stop but the
thing about that is that there's no real
motivation or reason for why the main
character would want to do that
in the first place other than just it's
the right thing to do
which in itself just makes them feel
even less relatable since
what teenager would ever actually have
those kinds of goals now in some older
shows with similar premises
yes you've got the entire transported
another world thing but the main
character has a clear goal
from the start to get back to their
original world to get back home
ready that's way more interesting
because they have a solid goal
with an understandable motivation and
you can already picture how as they go
throughout the story they get closer and
closer to that goal
even sword art online gets this step
right there is a reason why so many
people were intrigued by its original
premise
and it's for this reason i mean yeah it
still falls into the other pitfalls i
mentioned before but
at least the idea is good all stories
need conflict of some kind it doesn't
matter what genre it is
and yes that includes slice of life
might make a video about that if i feel
like it
but when it comes to isakai as a whole
not individual shows
for some reason all the tropes that it's
known for
seem to do nothing but drain the
conflict and a story without conflict
is kind of boring to me that's why it
confuses me that despite all of this
isakai is still so popular now i haven't
really watched a whole lot of izakaya at
this point and the reasons are because
of everything i mentioned beforehand and
combine that with the fact that pretty
much every izakaya synopsis i read
sounds almost the exact same
except for one major difference i can
never really bring myself to be
all that interested maybe i'm just the
wrong audience i don't know
clearly there's something that i'm
missing that everyone else seems to be
enjoying
so to all the izakaya fans out there

tell me why do you enjoy isakai as a
genre is it the comedy
is it the characters or is it something
else that i just don't get
