[0:01] (upbeat music) [0:04] - Tilt, originated as a poker term for a state of mental or [0:07] emotional confusion or frustration in which a player adopts [0:11] a less than optimal strategy, usually resulting [0:14] in the player, becoming over aggressive. [0:16] When someone enters the state of tilt, they've essentially [0:19] lost balance of their mind and their emotions. [0:21] What, once was a neutral or positive state of mind [0:25] has now shifted into the negatives [0:27] and all decisions afterwards are less than optimal [0:30] because you are starting from this negative point. [0:32] There's nothing more killer to entering flow state [0:35] than being in the state of tilt. [0:36] I think why tilt is so common in gaming is that there are [0:39] lots of triggers some of these affecting us [0:42] more than others. [0:43] Things like unfriendly or stubborn teammates, losing, [0:46] bad luck and timing, bad manners from the opponent, [0:49] nerves and pressure setting expectations, [0:52] overly competitive and not achieving results. [0:54] Tilt is like an invisible virus and [0:57] if you don't treat it immediately, it will spread to [0:59] your entire being and even worse in fact, [1:02] everyone around you, it is the bane of video gaming. [1:05] It causes fights, deranks or latter points and loses games. [1:09] So how can we prevent it? [1:11] What can we do when we feel ourselves slipping into this [1:14] negative mindset? [1:15] Well, because tilt affects us all differently. [1:18] I've asked a few of my former teammates, [1:20] how they deal with tilt. [1:24] Warden, a former Counter-Strike professional, [1:27] and now the manager of Complexity CS go team told me that he [1:30] understood that tilt will affect his and the team's [1:33] performance in a negative way. [1:35] So if he ever felt angry or frustrated, he made it a habit [1:39] to internalize and think heavily on controlling [1:41] his physical reactions so that it doesn't spread [1:44] to the rest of the team. [1:45] This is a great habit to implement because generally the [1:48] first reactions when entering tilt are to lash out and say [1:51] something harsh or slam the dusk or react with a negative [1:55] body language. [1:56] So to be able to withhold these reactions definitely helps [1:59] the team's chances in winning games, automatic 2018, [2:03] top 20 CS go player and winner of the CS go major, [2:07] told me that when he's playing with people, [2:08] he doesn't know he doesn't set any expectations from them. [2:12] And instead focuses on his own game play. [2:15] He approaches each day with the learner's mentality, [2:18] concerned more with things that he could have done better [2:21] learning from his mistakes [2:23] and focusing on how he can improve. [2:25] Whereas some players who get tilted or frustrated or more [2:28] concerned about their stats, rank [2:30] and position on the ladder, they have a tendency [2:33] to blame their teammates for mistakes, [2:35] with less emphasis on their own personal improvement, [2:38] having a student mentality and holding yourself accountable [2:42] is essential for improvement and staying in a good frame of [2:45] mind, shaGuar, a former teammate of mine and team 3D. [2:48] And now a very successful poker player told me that the [2:51] beauty of team games is that you have teammates to help pick [2:55] each other up and bail each other out. [2:57] If someone enters tilt from making mistake or missing a shot [3:01] compared to poker, where it can be a very lonely game [3:04] with only yourself to rely on [3:05] whether you're in a public server with teammates [3:07] you've never met before [3:09] or playing with your regular teammates, [3:11] it would be a good reminder to remind yourself that if you [3:14] have your notice them slipping into the state of tilt, [3:16] you can meet the person that lifts them out. [3:18] shaGuar, go to reminder if he's ever in a state [3:21] of tilt or generally just in a negative state of mind [3:24] is gratitude a feeling of thankfulness [3:27] and appreciation because let's be real. [3:29] If you're lucky enough to have food in your fridge, [3:31] a safe place to sleep and your health, [3:34] is it really justified being frustrated [3:36] and angry over a video game. [3:38] I want to end this video sharing some of my favorite quotes. [3:41] And if you ever feel yourself slipping into this state of [3:44] tilt, feeling flustered and frustrated, [3:47] hopefully remember back to this video and it'll help you [3:50] find your balance.
