[0:00] - GameStop have their retro program [0:02] where they offer "high quality retro video games [0:06] at a reasonable price." [0:07] Now we looked at them last year right after they launched. [0:09] The selection was incredibly minimal [0:11] and the conditions were generally pretty terrible. [0:13] Now that a year has passed, have they gotten better [0:16] and most importantly, how do they stack up [0:18] to the real benchmark in the space, DKOldies? [0:22] (laughs) I'm in danger. [0:24] So if we go to GameStop Retro, [0:26] we got everything from NES through Wii U. [0:29] PSP, Vita, Xbox, you name it. [0:31] Oh my god. $399 for a new 3DS XL. [0:36] The price on these things just keep going up and up and up. [0:39] Let's take a look to see [0:40] if I can find a 3DS on DKOldies. [0:43] DKOldies has a 3DS, the original, for $330. [0:48] - [Alex] Are you sure you're going old enough? [0:49] - I hate to say this, the 3DS is retro now. [0:52] Original 3DS from GameStop is $260. [0:56] (exhales) About to spend $600 [0:59] buying a couple of dumbass 3DSs. [1:01] - [Alex] How about we search for SEGA things? SEGA! [1:04] - Let's actually looking at like a model, [1:07] maybe like a model 3, [1:08] but does DKOldies have the same thing? [1:09] I actually need to make sure that they really are matched. [1:11] No Genesis 3s, they have some model 2s. [1:14] GameStop actually feels like they have more in stock. [1:16] Okay, let's just pick a clean model 2. Hold on. [1:21] Are they using the same photo? [1:22] They're literally using the same photo. [1:27] Okay, so GameStop Retro has a PS2 Slim, a complete system. [1:31] They show a photo of the box, they're lying. [1:33] Can I find a PS2 from DKOldies? [1:36] Wow, DKOldies are way more expensive. [1:41] Can I say that GameStop is maybe good? [1:43] Is that like a series of words that can come outta my mouth? [1:44] I don't think I'm supposed to say that, right? [1:46] Alright, so with that, it is time [1:47] to place the identical orders at both DKOldies [1:50] and GameStop to see exactly what we're working with here. [1:54] And so let us take a closer look. [1:56] As you can see, while DKOldies [1:58] just gave us everything in a single box, [1:59] GameStop shipped it in three different orders. [2:01] Now I was told that GameStop have actually changed [2:05] some of their retro policies so that they're trying [2:07] to source more of their consoles [2:09] from their like main warehouse to do a better job. [2:11] But let's see if that's actually the case. [2:13] (sighs) Aw (duck quacks). [2:16] Here we go again. [2:17] Alright, this is not terrible. [2:19] So well padded and that is our Game Boy Pocket used. [2:23] I mean it looks pretty good. [2:24] Now with GameStop, they don't give you a lot of like [2:27] sort of details on the quality level, right? [2:29] We've gotten some consoles that look great and clean. [2:31] We've seen a lot that are a dirty and disgusting. [2:33] This one was just called pre-owned, right? [2:36] - [Alex] That is correct. [2:36] - So the screen lens, which is one of the things [2:38] I would look for in these, not particularly scratched. [2:40] So the other thing I look for on Game Boys a lot, [2:43] this little piece of metal on the inside [2:45] as a Game Boy's being used, you know, [2:47] you put games in and out, that tends to scuff. [2:49] So not only the piece of metal but also this plastic, [2:51] you know, kind of putting it in and out. [2:53] It looks really minty. [2:54] This was not a Game Boy [2:55] that I think saw like a ton of hours. [2:57] You see it's yellowed, but that just shows me [2:59] that that's actually real. [3:00] That is a good sign. [3:01] Let's take look at what DKOldies have for us. [3:04] So this is our DKOldies Game Boy Pocket. [3:08] Something is off on the bottom of that screen. [3:12] It's gonna be really hard to see. Is that like mold? [3:14] Oh, when they put it in, there's like a little piece [3:18] of like foam to keep the glass [3:20] from touching the actual display. [3:21] I can see a little bit of that foam [3:24] popping out on the inside. [3:25] I don't wanna like ding them for like putting new parts. [3:27] Like that's good, right? [3:29] Like there's no reason why an older console [3:30] should just be scraped because it's not original anymore. [3:32] But that's a shoddy job [3:34] to like not install the screen and the lens right. [3:36] I mean to be fair, if you put 'em side by side, [3:38] it's definitely a reproduction, [3:39] 'cause you can see the difference in the font here, right? [3:41] So if you look at the plastic on the top, [3:43] you see all those like little scuff lines. [3:45] That's really common just 'cause every time [3:46] you put a game in and out it would scuff it. [3:48] I guess let's go ahead and fire these up [3:50] and see if they actually work. [3:52] So let's start by trying our GameStop Game Boy. [3:55] So there's a little bit of, I'll say like kind of [4:00] I can see a shadow. [4:01] That's not uncommon in these Game Boy Pockets [4:03] if I'm honest with you. [4:04] The screen is certainly a little bit on the rough side, [4:07] but it is definitely a pretty clean Game Boy. [4:09] So now let's try with our DKOldies console. [4:12] I'm just gonna hit the screen on both of these and see. [4:15] You know what? No. [4:18] This doesn't have a new screen in it. [4:19] I think what they did was they just changed the screen lens [4:22] and that screen lens probably came [4:23] with a little bit of foam. [4:24] Dude, that kind of bothers me though, man. [4:27] - [Adriana] That would bother me. [4:28] - It is actually almost the same [4:29] 'cause it's got the same slight shadow underneath. [4:31] I think I've seen what I need to see here. [4:33] So basically GameStop definitely delivers [4:36] a much cleaner and mintier console, [4:39] but I don't think they had anything to do with that, right? [4:41] Someone traded in a nice clean Game Boy Pocket, [4:43] they turned around and sold it. [4:44] Alex, let's start with GameStop. [4:45] How much did I pay for my Game Boy Pocket? [4:49] - [Alex] We paid $90. [4:51] - Not cheap, but ballpark. [4:54] What about DKOldies? [4:56] - [Alex] We paid $100. [4:57] - So we paid more for DKOldies for a console [5:01] that was modified and upgraded in a way, but just sloppily. [5:04] This first round is a very clear win for GameStop. [5:07] Cheaper, better quality console. [5:09] I don't know that that's gonna hold up [5:12] though as we continue. [5:13] My expectations are... [5:15] down here. [5:16] Next up, let's take a look at our GameStop SEGA Genesis [5:20] specifically the model dos. [5:22] That's what they call it, the cool kids. [5:23] They call it the model dos. [5:25] - [Alex] So then what are you saying it for? [5:26] - Before I told you to open it. [5:28] (box rattles) [5:29] Yeah, I just opened so many GameStop consoles. [5:32] There were like an Xbox thrown in a box with zero padding [5:35] that it's nice to actually get someone [5:36] who actually gives somewhat of a (duck quacks). [5:38] This also does seem like it's coming from [5:40] their like main location. [5:42] Oh and look at it, it's got another box too. [5:45] We've got a controller, which is an original controller. [5:48] Okay, so that was one of my first questions. [5:49] 'Cause DKOldies specifically tried to upcharge me [5:51] to get an original controller. [5:53] The original like first party power adapter [5:55] weighs like 75 pounds. [5:56] That's ridiculous. This is a third party, which is fine. [5:59] I guess as long it doesn't catch on fire. [6:01] Whoa. [6:02] They gave you like an RF tuner, really? [6:04] And we have ourselves the Genesis Model 2 [6:06] and nothing else. [6:08] So again, this is in pre-owned condition, [6:10] so definitely had like some tape on it at some point. [6:12] It's very like sticky here. [6:14] I mean I think most Genesises [6:15] were sticky at some point. [6:18] What? Huh? [6:18] - What? Why? - Speak for yourself. [6:21] Oh my god. [6:23] - [Alex] Oh my god, please don't break the thing [6:25] before you even try it. [6:26] - It doesn't sound good. [6:27] You know what? Maybe this port was never opened. [6:29] I'll just trust that the pins on the inside are fine. [6:32] Again, pretty encouraging, right? [6:35] For DKOldies we have ourselves, [6:37] this is gonna be an Old Skool controller. [6:39] It is a six button controller, [6:40] but this is a brand new controller. [6:42] I mean I always like to have the originals. [6:44] The third parties aren't really as desirable in my opinion. [6:47] This one does come with the RCA, which I would prefer. [6:50] Ha. Yeah, this is what I'm talking about. [6:52] This is the original power adapter. [6:54] (adapter thuds) [6:55] It is incredibly heavy. [6:58] (glass shatters) [6:59] - Oh. - So heavy. [7:00] Let's, oh gross. What the hell? [7:03] Ew. It's still like actively sticky. [7:05] My guess is that this got massively scuffed [7:08] and what this stickiness is [7:09] is they actually tried to fix it. [7:11] I appreciate the fact they tried to hide it, [7:13] but the problem is the shade of black paint [7:15] they put on it presumably is different. [7:18] - [Alex] Yeah, that looks bad. [7:19] - It does not look encouraging. [7:21] So it still has the feet on it, [7:22] which I makes you realizing the GameStop one doesn't. [7:24] Does this one pop off? [7:26] (console clicks) Look at that. [7:27] See this is what you're supposed to do. [7:28] What condition is the DKOldies one in? [7:31] And please tell me it's not good. [7:32] - [Alex] The DKOldies is in acceptable condition. [7:35] - Okay, cool. That is what I was hoping for. [7:37] Again, GameStop doesn't let you choose, DKOldies does. [7:40] The other thing I'm noticing here is that GameStop, [7:43] they didn't really take the three minutes [7:44] it would've taken to like fully clear this off. [7:46] Like it looks like there was like a label [7:47] or like some tape on here or some stickers. [7:49] I think if I was gonna pick between the two [7:51] just on physical appearance, I would go GameStop. [7:54] Alright, so let's start out by trying [7:55] our GameStop SEGA Genesis. [17:47] - [Alex] If you buy from like professional refurbishers [17:50] and stuff like that, it can go closer to 200. [17:52] Around the 200s. [17:53] If you're just buying from like just a guy, [17:55] it's probably in like the low 100 range. [17:58] - Now if this would've come with a DualShock 2, [18:00] I actually would probably be okay with 160 bucks. [18:02] But it's in the ballpark of almost okay. [18:05] How much did we pay for our DKOldies console, Alex? [18:10] - [Alex] Well if you didn't like GameStop's price, [18:13] we paid $240. [18:20] - What? [18:23] Okay, I thought we did bad on the value in the 3DS. [18:26] This is worse. I should be able to eat off this PS2. [18:29] And while I could, I might not get my positive test result [18:33] that I've been trying to get for a few months now. [18:34] Alex, what did we pay [18:35] for all of our consoles combined at GameStop? [18:38] - [Alex] We paid a total of $585. [18:42] - Whereas at DKOldies? [18:44] - [Alex] $740. [18:47] - That's a crazy swing. [18:49] So how do we sum this up? [18:50] Well, I think in many respects GameStop wins this [18:54] and I don't think it's really that close. [18:56] They were almost universally more affordable, [18:59] generally speaking as good if not better on the quality [19:02] front across all the consoles we tested here. [19:04] And the biggest downside really is the fact [19:06] that they don't really have a good warranty. [19:08] It's just you got a seven day return policy. [19:10] And obviously GameStop as a company, [19:12] may or may not be a company you want to support. [19:14] But compare it to when we tried GameStop Retro last time, [19:16] this is a legitimately big improvement. [19:19] DKOldies... [19:22] (sighs) I mean, what do we say? [19:23] If GameStop makes your prices look bad, [19:27] you know that you (duck quacks) up. [19:29] What do you think my friends? [19:31] Has GameStop redeemed themselves? [19:33] Have DKOldies dug themselves a deeper hole than usual? [19:35] Subscribe to the channel. [19:36] Ring-a-ling that ding-a-ling. [19:37] And if you'll excuse me, [19:38] I'm gonna go play some more "Crazy Taxi." [19:40] ♪ Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah ♪
