# Why Is The Isekai Genre So Popular?

> Source: [Why Is The Isekai Genre So Popular?](https://youtube.com/watch?v=eC-GLGvdbvI)

## Summary

The isekai genre is both loved and hated for its repetitive power-fantasy plots, but it remains popular due to its relatable premise of escaping to a new world. While 95% of isekai are low-quality cookie-cutter stories, the genre occasionally produces gems like Re:Zero and Mushoku Tensei that innovate and deliver compelling narratives.

### Key Points

- **Isekai's Polarized Reputation** [0:00] — The isekai genre is infamous for spawning hundreds of low-quality, cookie-cutter stories each year, yet it remains popular because of occasional gems.
- **Sword Art Online's Impact** [0:35] — Sword Art Online (2012) boosted isekai's popularity by teleporting the protagonist into a virtual MMO world, setting a template for the genre.
- **Relatability as a Strength** [1:18] — Isekai's core appeal is its relatable premise: an average person gets a second chance in a new world, often becoming overpowered and living out fantasies.
- **Biggest Flaw: Predictability** [2:48] — The genre's biggest flaw is its overused, predictable plot: a normal person transported to a fantasy world with overpowered powers and a vague threat.
- **Recipe for a Cookie-Cutter Isekai** [3:55] — To make a generic isekai: take an average person, give them overpowered powers, a harem, main character syndrome, and a demon lord to defeat.
- **Potential for Good Stories** [4:30] — Despite flaws, isekai can tell good stories when it innovates, as seen in Re:Zero, Rising of the Shield Hero, and Mushoku Tensei.
- **Re:Zero's Unique Twist** [5:10] — Re:Zero's protagonist Subaru is weak and must use his 'Return by Death' ability strategically, dying repeatedly to save others, subverting typical power fantasies.
- **Rising of the Shield Hero's Premise** [5:45] — Shield Hero's Naofumi is falsely accused and banished, forcing him to rebuild his reputation from scratch, offering a fresh take on the genre.
- **Importance of World-Building** [6:49] — Isekai shines when it creates interesting, innovative worlds rather than generic fantasy settings, leveraging the premise's potential for unique environments.
- **Isekai's Staying Power** [7:49] — Isekai is here to stay because it's easy to produce, but when creators put in effort, the genre can produce genuine gems.

### Conclusion

Isekai has immense potential for unique stories, but it is often wasted on generic plots. The genre can produce masterpieces when creators innovate, but 95% of isekai fail to bring anything new to the table.

## Transcript

ah yes the isekai genre one of the most
infamous and well-known anime genres
there is that is both hated and loved by
the entire anime community at the same
time we're spawning hundreds upon
hundreds of new yeashikai every year
where 95 of them are low quality cookie
cutter stories which have given these
sky shanger a bad rap but every once in
a while the stars align and the izukai
genre creates a new gem of the series
that's unbelievably good which is why so
many people still come back to the sky
genre again and again izukai shangri has
been around anime for a long long time
but in the last few years there's been a
boom in the izakaya genre with anime
such as 2012's hit sword art online
where our main character kirito gets
teleported into a new video game virtual
mmo world where he has to fend for
himself in order to survive that really
boosted the sky shangri to new heights
as a top contender and anime with its
gigantic success with millions upon
millions of people watching its many
seasons and sequels sword art online is
by far not the only anime that
popularized the genre though sword art
online lit the embers of the izkai's
shanghai's hype and was later held along
by other well-made izukai with
interesting plots and wills in the
following years such as no game no life
re zero konosuba block horizon list goes
on and on so what is the hype behind the
sky shangri about and why is it so
popular and well known in anime anime
like seo might have put a spotlight on
the sky shangri and given it a lot of
attention but the reason why the
shanghai got a lot of traction to begin
with is because of how relatable it is
and how easy it is to see yourself in
the genre the izukai shanghai's general
mainstream plot line normally takes an
average joe person in the real world
with no exceptional qualities look at
kirito nafumi subaru
or even to some extent failures in our
world for example the main character
from jobless reincarnation or chasma
from
what the [ __ ] is that called again
conozuba
and transports them into another world
giving them a second chance in life
where they usually are overpowered as
hell and live out their power hungry
fantasies usually with a team or a harem
by their side
one of the easy guys shanghai's biggest
strengths and selling points is how
relatable it is we all want to be an
overpowered hero of the story type of
person we all want to be the protagonist
figure with a harem by our side who
everyone looks up to and idealizes to no
end who saves the world from evil we all
wish we could be that one million hero
figure and that is exactly why that is
one of the easyguys jungler's biggest
selling points and strengths imagine
this you could transport it to a whole
new undiscovered world where you get a
new chance in life now that we've talked
about isakai shangri's biggest selling
points and its biggest strengths we also
have to talk about the shanghai's reagan
sides and shortcomings the biggest flaw
of the e-sky genre in my opinion is how
polarized
and predictable and overused its general
plot line has gotten over the years
because of hundreds upon hundreds of
cookie-cutter izukai power fantasy story
adaptations that can release every
single goddamn year where the same thing
happens a normal guy or girl gets
transported into a new world with a new
set of powers way beyond anyone else in
the world and it's up to them to save
everyone from some vague threat it has
gotten boring because almost every
single easy sky anime is the exact same
concept and story just with a new coat
of paint and a new pair of rifles of
course there are exceptions to this and
we'll get into that later on but like i
mean for god's sake there is a god damn
izuka anime about isakai anime
isakai quartets
really
you
that
they made
you know what i'm getting ahead of
myself let's move on the izkai's genre
has gotten so many trash anime because
it takes next to no effort or creativity
to make an ordinary isekai series here
let me teach you how to make an ordinary
and normal isekai series just take an
average generic person or an average joe
from the real world and put them in a
new undiscovered world give them the
most overpowered power ever seen in that
world give them a harem of cute anime
girls and give them main character
syndrome and at last add some vague
threat like a demon lord or something
like that they have to save the world
from and boom you're done you've made a
new cookie cutter izukai anime with a
standard easykip plotline that has no
sense of uniqueness and individuality at
all congratulations
but even with all these jarring
shortcomings and flaws the izakaya
shangri still has a lot of potential to
tell good and entertaining stories and
the shinra in general is far from dead
just look at all the good products that
the isekai shangra has produced over the
years
such as the rising of the shield hero
re-zero that time i got reincarnated as
a slime konosuba overlord soma spider so
what and my personal favorite isakai of
all time jobless reincarnation also
known as mushuku tennessee and many more
as you can see this guy shangra does
have a fair few respectable anime under
its belt izukai shangri can still create
and tell good stories with interesting
premises for example in re zero the main
character called natsuki subaru has to
save everyone with his power to reset
time back to his previous save point
called return by death where subaru has
to die multiple painful agonizing deaths
to save everyone he loves and cares
about whereas subaru himself is
extremely weak he has to change small
fractures to manipulate the timeline
over time to get his desired outcome
subaru himself isn't particularly strong
he can't just run at his problems head
first with no plan and expect to win
like most other isekai protagonists he
actually has to use his head in order to
get the results he desires or look at
the rising of the shields hero instead
which is a story where our main
character naofumi iwatani the new shield
hero gets portrayed by the people he
trusted and gets falsely accused of
sexual assault in the very first episode
and therefore he gets banished with
nothing to his name and has to rebuild
his good name and reputation from
scratch all on his own meanwhile nearly
everyone still sees him and his new
companions and friends as nothing more
than criminal scum were no better than
common thieves
as you can see the east coast genre is
able to tell some interesting stories
and tales that don't have to be plagued
by the normal shortcomings that come
with an easy guide product if it wants
to and tries to stray away from a normal
isekai mold the izukai shiner in general
is extremely good and entertaining when
the main character gets teleported or
brought to a new and interesting world
or place where they try to stay away
from the traditional boring izakaya
world norms and actually try to be
different from the other isekai isekai
that have interesting worlds with good
world building and good and innovative
concepts and have stories to tell and
messages to deliver to the viewer are
extremely interesting because they're
like i said
innovative they're different
dc kai zhang's main plot point is being
brought to a new and interesting world
and so many sky just centers around the
same uninteresting most of the time
variety like worlds who have seen in the
media one million times before which is
such a shame and such a waste if you ask
me you have the ability to make any
universe or world you want and bring
modern day normal people to it and for
some reason many isakai just don't want
to utilize that potential and just
create ordinary cookie cutter fantasy
worlds which is where the isekai shangri
is at its very worst the shangri gets
boring and predictable when you use the
same cookie cutter plotline every other
isakai anime ever has used for multiple
years at this point you have the ability
to create any world you want and for
some reason they all decide to do the
same thing over and over again which is
the most important part of isekai you
can make any world you want and you
still stick to the same old norms anyway
i just don't get it this is the most
obnoxious thing i've ever experienced in
my life
whether you like it or not the izakaya
shangri isn't going anywhere soon and it
is here to stay isekai is in my opinion
the easiest animation to make it takes
next to no effort or creativity to make
an ordinary unexceptional trashy cookie
cutter izukai and that is exactly why
they come out in droves every year
they are so easy to make it is crazy
but
when you actually try to be original
while making an isakai that is when the
genre can shine you have the power to
take a person from our modern society
and put them into any environment you
want where the only boundary and limit
is your own imagination isekai has
gotten a bad rap because it is so easy
to make them that they have been pumped
out like crazy over the last few years
but when you really create a good isekai
my god you've got a real gem on your
hands alright let's wrap this up in my
opinion the izuka shanghai can be a good
and entertaining genre that can be and
do virtually anything with its core
premises but the easikai shanghai has so
many pitfalls that can turn into some of
the most generic media you can find
anywhere isekai anime are so easy to
produce that many discover the same core
ailments and don't try to stand out from
the crowd or the competitors which is a
shame because like i have said many
times by now izukai's core premises
leave so much room for interesting
worlds and stories that most other
genres can't tell in the same way
and yet all we keep getting is the same
old story over and over again with a new
coat of paint because it takes no effort
there's a reason why the izuka's genre
has become a derogatory symbol over the
years and it's because ninety-five
percent of all the sky don't even try to
bring anything new to the table it's a
shame it really is that a shiner of so
much potential is plagued with so much
bad stigma but at the very least we know
that the genre can produce gems if the
effort required is put into doing so
[Music]
