[00:02] It's not even the fact that the manual is gone, although pour one out. No, the problem is that Volkswagen seems determined to hide a really great hot hatch underneath a layer of frustrating tech. This car still does the GTI thing [00:17] polished, it's still that wonderful balance where you can drive it every single day and then accidentally take the long way home because the road got the chat. But the old GTI was magic because it felt simple. It was the [00:31] practical enthusiast car. Plaid seats, hatchback body, turbo torque, manual gearbox, done. It felt like the car version of a really good pocket knife. This one feels more like a Leatherman that also requires software updates. The [00:44] even louder. On one hand, you get all the grown-up stuff, nicer interior, adaptive dampers, better audio, more tech, more luxury car energy than GTIs used to have. It's comfortable, it's quiet enough, and feels expensive in the [00:57] on their game. But then you interact with some of the controls and remember, ah yes, Europe has once again punished us for wanting a knob. And yet, the annoying part is that once you're actually driving it, a lot of that fades [01:10] away. The 2-liter turbo still makes 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, which doesn't sound insane anymore, but it's the way it delivers it that matters. It's not trying to be a Civic Type R. It's not yelling at strangers. [01:22] It's not constantly flexing in a tank top. It's quick in a way that works in real life. It has usable torque. The DSG is fast and polished. The steering is clean, the chassis rotates just enough to remind you there are still engineers [01:35] at Volkswagen who understand joy. And that's what makes the GTI so hard to replace. An Elantra N is more exciting. A Civic Si is simpler. A Civic Type R is more special, but the GTI still lives in this perfect middle ground where it can [01:49] your Costco car, and your I still care about driving machine. So no, the GTI is not the simple hot hatch it used to be. But, underneath the occasional UI tantrum, it's still one of the best answers in the entire car [02:04] world. It's still the old GTI magic trapped in a very modern group chat.
