[00:00] Here's the truth. Most people actually never open their Etsy shop, even after watching tons of YouTube videos all about Etsy and print on demand because they're stuck in overthinking mode. They convince themselves that first they need [00:13] to have the perfect logo, a flawless brand, and tons of great listings before they can even open their shop in the first place. Sound familiar? Well, let me save you some time. You don't need to be perfect to start. You just need to [00:28] start. Think of it like learning how to ride a bike. You didn't read a 30-page manual or watch tons of YouTube videos to learn how to ride it. You just grabbed the handlebars, hopped on, wobbled around, and figured it out. [00:41] Opening an Etsy store is just like that. You'll learn so much more by actually opening your shop and getting your first item listed than you ever will over obsessing on the right way to do it. So, if you've been waiting for a sign, then [00:54] this is it. In this tutorial, I'm going to give you the full actual stepbystep beginners's guide. No fluff, no confusion, just action. First, let's get started with busting the two most common Etsy myths that I see hold up new Etsy [01:11] sellers from actually taking action in their business. And then we'll hop into the full step-by-step, screen bycreen guide of getting started as a beginner. The first Etsy myth to bust is that you need to have a product launch with 15 to [01:25] 20 listings in your product library before you actually make your shop live. The truth is though, you only need one product to launch your shop. The really beautiful thing about having an Etsy store is that most shoppers aren't [01:40] looking for Etsy shops. They're actually coming to Etsy and searching for a specific item, looking through the search results, and then purchasing one of those. And that's because Etsy is a search enginebased website. So again, [01:55] today like you would at maybe a department store. You're actually and type in Mother's Day mug and then you look through the Mother's Day mugs [02:09] and you purchase one. And so you can actually have just one item in your store and get sales. Myth number two is you need to pick the perfect one niche is, I know some people pronounce it a little different, but I like to say [02:25] niche is a niche is just a category of products. So, one niche might be pickle ball, one niche might be mom, one niche might be dad shirts or piano player [02:37] shirts. There's so many different types of niches. So, these just think of them that you need to have say a golf themed store and that's all you can sell. But [02:49] that is absolutely a myth. If you really look at the top sellers on Etsy, almost all of them are going to be what I call a general store where either one they sell lots of different niches on the exact same type of product. So like [03:04] let's say they sell just t-shirts, but they sell t-shirts for moms, dads, aunts, nurses, teachers, etc. or they might sell lots of different products for those different niches as well. Like they have shirts, they have mugs, they [03:19] have tumblers, they have ornaments, and for all those different niches. And so the proof is always in the pudding. If you look on Etsy at the top sellers, really take a moment and ask yourself, do you need to pick one niche or not? [03:32] Because almost none of the top Etsy shops did, and so I don't think you need to either. So, stop stressing about finding the perfect niche or building a massive product line before you launch. Your store will evolve over time. Just [03:46] get it live and let the market tell you what it wants. Now, what should you actually sell in your Etsy store as a beginner? So, there's really three main options of what types of things that you can sell on Etsy. There's handmade items [04:00] where you actually make the items at home by painting them, making them, etc. And then when a customer orders, you have to go to the post office, package those, and ship those each time. The second most popular option is digital [04:13] downloads where you actually create something on your computer, and then when the customer purchases it, they just download it and get it right away. This might be something like party invitations or even a PNG designed to [04:26] put on top of an item that they themselves print at home. And the third option is something called print on demand. And if you are here and you have yet, this is actually the strategy that I have used to become a top 1% Etsy [04:43] seller myself. And this is the print on demand method. So the whole idea with print on demand is that it's a very low barrier entry way to start a business because you will work with a printing company. So let's say a company like [04:57] Printify is my favorite print on demand company to use. You'd connect your Etsy store with company like Printify and they have hundreds of different products that you can put your own design on and sell. So you'd post these items for sale [05:11] on Etsy. They don't actually get printed and made into the item until your customer orders them. So you don't have to order hundreds of items of stock and from a customer, Printify will actually print that item and ship it to your [05:28] customer for you. So, all you have to do is worry about creating the great designs, getting them listed in your store, and handle the customer service. But this is a really great option as well because you can make anywhere from [05:41] 5 to 15 or even more per item depending on what you decide to sell. Whereas something like digital downloads, a lot of times you're only making$1 to $3 an printon-demand items. So, the first part I'll be showing you is how to actually [05:57] open your Etsy shop. Then I'll also take you through how to set up your Printify account and get it connected to Etsy. So, this can be your one-stop shop on actually getting the store just opened and set up and ready for business. So, [06:10] step number one in creating your Etsy account is making a brand new email. Now, you're welcome to use a personal email if you'd like, but customers can email you at the email on your account. So, I would recommend having a [06:23] professional email. If you're not sure what your Etsy shop name is going to be just yet, then you can just use your personal email to get started. And then you can always update this after you choose your Etsy shop name and get [06:35] logged in. It is very easy to change the email later if you need to. And it doesn't need to be a fancy email. I would just open up a Gmail account so open your Etsy account with this email. So, if you already have an Etsy account [06:51] that you like to make purchases on, I would leave that as your personal Etsy account and create a brand new Etsy account with your business email or your new email. But before you go actually open up the Etsy account, I do have a [07:04] link for you down in the description that if you click that link and then open up your Etsy shop, you will get 40 free listings. Now, listings on Etsy cost 20 to post for sale. And so that is about $8 in savings if you open it with [07:19] that link. So if you haven't opened up an Etsy shop just yet, click the link down in the description and then open up your Etsy shop. Once you open your Etsy right and click sell on Etsy to actually open up your shop. Since at first what [07:36] you did was just open up your actual account. Now if you use the link down below, this page will look just a little bit different, but it'll have that same get started. it'll just say that you were referred by me right above it. So, [07:48] I'll walk you through steps by step on what all these different pages look like. I didn't actually open a brand new shop, but all of these pages are up to date until I get to the payments portion. So, here you'll just say, [08:01] "Let's do this." Now, it is important to know that there has been an update within the last 6 months to a year with Etsy where you do have to pay a $29 setup fee. They've been changing this. Sometimes it's 15, but now it seems to [08:14] really be set at 29 for a little while. And so if you see a different number, if you're watching this in a few months, don't panic. It is normal. The reason why it costs money to open up an Etsy shop is there was a lot of kind of fraud [08:27] on Etsy. So, this is Etsy's way to try and combat that and get people to stop opening up fraudulent Etsy accounts just to scam other sellers or customers. So, you'll say, "Let's do this," and go to the next page. Now, I would say you do [08:42] want to answer the next questions in the rest of the pages. It doesn't really matter exactly what you answer, but I do think that it helps Etsy's bot system realize that you are not a bot. So, with Etsy, they do have automated systems [08:57] real. And so, sometimes shops do wrongly get flagged and suspended after opening. So, just a heads up there. You can appeal it and get your shop back. [09:10] doesn't happen near as often as it used to. I think they've made big strides in gets suspended, don't panic. Just file an appeal. I've seen people have to file two appeals before, but almost everybody gets their shop back as long as they are [09:26] truthful with their application on where they live and all of their information. So, I would say I'm just starting to sell for the first time. You can say like, is there anything I'd like help with? Feel free to pick one of these and [09:39] then go to the next page. Just now time for the fun part. Start your shop. So like. Opening your shops, your preferences, naming your shop, stocking your shop, how you'll get paid, billing info, and your shop security. So this [09:54] page here, you're going to choose your language. You're going to use your shop country and your shop currency. This part is really important. I know only about 50% of my YouTube channel is in the US. So, if you don't live in the US, [10:07] this is where you want to be honest about where you actually are. Later on, we can say your shop is located somewhere else. If it's shipping from somewhere else, like for the customerf facing, you can do that. But for this [10:20] page here, it is really important that you tell Etsy where you're actually located. Unfortunately, Etsy isn't available for sellers in every single um, what countries it is and isn't available in. And then as far as your [10:37] currency, you do want to make this currency the same currency as your bank account. If you say don't have US dollars in your bank account, but you make your shop currency USD, then you will be paying a up to a 2.5% conversion [10:51] fee for that money to get paid to you when you make money from Etsy. So, we don't want that. I do also recommend opening up a credit card with 0% foreign transaction fees if you can find one. I know Canada at least has a good one. Uh [11:05] but if that's not an option, then it's not an option. So, fill out this information here. And then on the next page, you'll be naming your shop. So, if you haven't already chosen an Etsy name, you will put it in here. And you can put [11:18] in any ideas that you have. This really I would recommend not overthinking your Etsy shop name. You can even change it, I think, just once later on. So, it's not something you have to be tied to. But the other really good part about [11:30] Etsy is that Etsy is a searchbased platform where most people aren't coming and typing in your store name and finding you and then looking through your shop. 99% of the time, people aren't even looking at your shop name. [11:43] buying one. So, don't overthink this step. If you do need some inspiration though, you can go to just etsy.com is the best place to get inspiration and [11:56] look through other people's shop names. You'll see most of them are real generic or don't even make a ton of sense and that's totally fine. You can even name it after a paint color you like or after something that people call you, whatever [12:08] makes sense. And then when you put that in there, they'll give you some name generator ideas down at the bottom um for like adding boutique or store or shop or whatever at the end of it. And so, you know, come up with a name and go [12:22] ahead and keep going. The next step in the process is stocking your shop. So, for us print on demand sellers, this is going to be a fake listing that we're going to delete later. If you get to this part and you actually have a [12:36] handmade item, then go ahead and actually fill out all this information and then this will be a real listing for you. For any print on demand sellers, when we're selling print on demand items through Printify, we're actually going [12:51] to be adding the design to Printify and then publishing that design to Etsy. So, we won't be making the listings here on Etsy in most cases. There are some ways that you would or reasons that you would. Um, so this is for us in print on [13:05] to walk you through the whole process so you're not confused on what you need to set up. And this will also help you later when you set up your very first subscribe because I will be making another video very soon, hopefully next [13:22] week, where I'll actually walk you through the full process of a listing from finding a design to making the design, the research, actually listing on Printed by, publishing to Etsy, doing the SEO, and the mockups. So, that will [13:36] be a super in-depth, really great video. So, subscribe if you want to check it to choose a category. So, here you can see I typed in t-shirts. You can type in [13:48] then you'll say it's a physical item. You'll say another company or person made the item since with print on demand, we are not the ones actually [14:00] physically making the item. And then for the next part, you'll say what is it? It's a finished product. And then when was it made made to order? The last thing you need to do here since you chose another company or person is you [14:15] need to add a production partner. So Etsy does require that if you're not the one hand making your items or digitally making your items, then you do have to tell Etsy who your printing partner is. That does need to be put in here. So [14:28] click add production partner. And you would just want to choose one print provider from say Printify to make one of these for. And then if you're not sure, you can just use Swift POD and that's what I'll show you how to do here [14:41] on here. So you would just Google in this case Swift POD is one of the printers on Printify. So Swift POD location. You can see their address here in San Jose, California. And so then you'd use that information. So on the [14:56] create a production partner, you can put production partner name, Swift POD. Um I choose to not show the production partner's name to my buyers. And so then you give it a descriptive title. And this will actually appear instead of the [15:09] really generic. For about this partner, I say I make all of the designs. And they help me add these designs to the physical items. And then for the location, again here you can see we used San Jose, California. And then at the [15:25] last part at the bottom, you'll say about our partnership. Why are you working with them? I don't have the technical ability or the equipment. Uh is the partner's role in the production process, which is they do everything for [15:40] me. Now, this is just an important just like little note. If you're selling on Etsy, this I design everything myself. You do need to make sure you give that answer because technically Etsy is still trying to be like a unique marketplace [15:53] or handmade marketplace. They do allow print on demand partners like this with the caveat that you have to have designed the products. So, you can't sell print on demand and purchase all the designs already pre-made. That's [16:07] the designs to be able to sell print on demand, if that makes sense. So, go listings. And then this is what you'll see the production partners created. [16:22] You'll see Swift POD and you can click done. So, then it'll ask you to add some more details. So, it'll ask you to add some photos and details about your item and your title. So, going to the next page here, you can just do something [16:36] teacher, but again, because we don't want to get flagged by the bots, we want to try and make sure this listing looks as realistic as possible. So, for the title, I said teacher shirt, gift for teacher. You can do gift for mom. Just [16:53] Etsy title, and you'll be good to go. As for the pictures, I do think it would be a good idea if you have product photography of some kind, like pictures [17:06] of what you're selling to upload it. Now, if you don't and you're a brand new print on demand seller, then what I'll have you do is actually make something in Canva just really quickly. If you're not familiar with what Canva is, Canva [17:20] is a design software that makes it really easy to add text, change colors, add graphics. This is where I put together most of my designs if I'm not using something like AI to make the designs. And so, I do have a 30-day free [17:36] trial for Canva Pro down in the description. So, you can use it completely for free to do what I'm about to show you. And then you can use it to make all of your designs for your first month to really get started for a low [17:48] low amount to get started with your print on demand business. Coming over to Canva to make just a quick product photography. You can click create a design and then you'll come down to custom size. For this, I'm just going to [18:02] put 2700 by 2700 since that is the size photos that I like to use for my Etsy images for like the photos of the product. and click create new design. [18:14] Again, this is just a quick thing to do to make this fake listing. This isn't how I actually want you to do it in the future, but you can feel free to skip to of the timestamps down below. So, here I'm just type in like a picture of a [18:30] shirt, for example, and go to photos. And let's just use something like this background. Nice and great. And then we're going to add some kind of text to [18:43] it. You can even use some of these font combinations that are already created down here. Try and make sure it makes sense for, you know, the fake kind of We're just using this for our um, you know, product photos to make it look [19:00] very realistic. So, let's say like first grade teacher. Now, again, I probably wouldn't actually sell this in my store. This is just a real quick quick thing to get you some product photography. Kind of place [19:13] it on the shirt like it would actually look. And then there you go. That's all one photo would probably cover it for opening your shop. Um, then you'll click [19:26] share and download. And then here you can just save it as a JPEG file and click download. Then now you can use one of these images for your fake listing. Scrolling down on the page, you can add in a description. So again, I would just [19:40] add in some kind of quick thing about like this would make a great gift for a teacher for teacher appreciation day. You can add in something about how, you know, it's custom order. You don't take any returns or exchanges. Um, just add [19:53] in some stuff in the description to make it sound like, again, it's a real product. If you don't have your full real description ready yet, you can even just go to Etsy really quick, find a shirt, and just copy and paste some of [20:05] types of things that they have in their description, just because we want this to look as realistic as possible. Scrolling down a little bit more, you'll set your price and your quantity. So, a good price for a shirt, we'll say [20:17] $24.99. And quantity, the highest quantity you can ever make on Etsy is 999 in stock. So, I would just set it at that. And then you'll come down to the bottom. I usually just skip the tags and attributes. I don't think you really [20:31] need to fill any of that out, especially for this. Um, and then coming down to the tags, I would just add in a couple. So tags, if you're not familiar, is part of your SEO, just search engine optimization. So how I've been saying [20:44] that Etsy is a searchbased platform. The way that customers find you is by searching keywords. And the way your listings come up for those keywords is you have those keywords in your titles, your tags, and your description. So, [20:58] just say something like this. Super simple. Gift for teacher, teacher gifts, teacher appreciation, first grade teacher, like what do you think you would type in for the fake thing that you're making? And then we'll move on [21:13] from there. Last, you need to make a shipping profile. So you'll come down to shipping profile and click create option. And then here when you are creating your shipping option, you do need to change this top one from [21:26] ask you like the dimensions of the item and the weight of the item. We just want to set a set price because with print on demand, we pay a set price per item. So [21:38] you'll say I'll enter fixed prices manually and then you will add in the information. So for Swift POD, the zip code was 95112. Shipping from the United States and processing time just in general, I [21:53] like to say about 3 to 5 days for the item to actually get printed and sent out is a pretty good estimate. Most print on demand items are really sent out within 1 to two days, but stuff does run late. Things do go out of stock. [22:08] Stuff does happen. So I definitely think underpromising and overd delivering is always a good option. Then coming down to the shipping service, um I would change that to USPS first class mail, 1 to 5 business days. And then here you [22:22] can say what you'll charge is free shipping or you can put in there a of the US, um so here you can see everywhere else, you can actually just delete that here and leave just the United States. If you want to ship other [22:38] places, that's completely up to you. But there are things that you'll need to know about shipping to other countries. Like some countries require you to take returns and exchanges or have extra fees that are going to be put on it. So [22:50] personally, I would recommend starting even if you don't live in the United States, start selling just to the US because they are the largest customer base on Etsy and it'll just be the simplest. You don't have to research [23:03] everything else. But you can change this any day you want. This way, you don't have to know everything going into it. And I actually will link an interview that I did with one of my students, Andreas, who lives full-time in Sweden [23:16] and started an Etsy shop and has now sold over a million on Etsy. I'll link only to the US while not living here, how to avoid um different conversion [23:29] fees, and different tips and tricks that he had. So, I will link that interview down below for any of you that don't live here in the US. And you can click save as a shipping profile. And that will be what it looks like here. Uh for [23:42] your returns and exchanges, I would just click the returns and exchanges policy that they have. Um and you could even change it to 15 days if you want to take two week returns and exchanges or you can say no returns and exchanges. And [23:55] I'll also put a video that I made down below about how to handle returns and exchanges for print on demand business. So, I'll link a couple different resources and videos for you to watch next in the description since I can't [24:07] cover everything in today's video all at once. And then down here at the bottom, you'll just change this to a manual renewal. So, what this means though, automatic renewal or you can do a manual renewal. The difference is that you get [24:23] charged 20 cents when you first list the item. If it doesn't sell, then in four months, they'll charge you 20 cents to relist it for sale. And if you want that, you can leave it on automatic or you could change it to manual. So, if it [24:37] doesn't sell for 4 months, it will go into your inactive folder on Etsy. Um, so totally up to you. I personally like to let listings go two or three renewals before I deactivate it because even if it sells one time in the entire year and [24:53] it more than pays for those fees and so I kind of gamble on if that ends up nothing with Etsy is set in stone. It's all kind of something that you have to [25:05] kind of figure out and try different things over the time that you're selling on Etsy and you'll figure out what works best for you. So then lastly, you'll just click save and continue. You'll get this screen that says great job on your [25:17] first listing. And then don't click add more listings. Just say do this later. So now we're in the how you'll get paid section. So this you'll hear see up here percentage of earned funds may be set aside in a temporary reserve for some [25:33] new shops. Now in my experience, they put payment reserves on every brand new shop. And it is important to understand what payment reserves are before you get started so that you aren't surprised by this. So the way that print on demand [25:46] works is when you get an order from a customer, you have to immediately pay Printify to print that item for the customer because Printify and Etsy are separate companies that are not technically related financially in any [26:00] way. So, you'll be paying Printify to print the item and then Etsy is going to take out the Etsy fees from the item that they purchased and they'll give you the money. So, you pay Printify and then Etsy pays you back, but you are the [26:15] middleman. But Etsy wants to protect against scammers. So, to protect their buyers, what they do is they keep a percentage of each sale until they get the tracking number proving that the item shipped to the customer. So, for a [26:29] few days until that item ships, you've paid Printify, but Etsy hasn't paid you yet. So, for that reason, I would recommend having maybe a hundred or $200 saved up so that you can front some of that cost. But after 90 days, you can [26:44] change it to where you get paid out daily on what your customers actually purchase. And so, it is just something good to know so you're not confused in bank located. So, for me, I said United States, but it is important to know that [27:01] you cannot change what country your bank is located in. That's something that at least someone told me. I've never tried it myself, but I've had sellers try and change countries of their bank, and it hasn't worked. I think it's a security [27:15] measure for Etsy, thinking that it's fraud of some kind. And so, just a heads up there if that makes any difference to which bank account that you actually connect to. So, when you scroll down, it'll say for tax purposes, what type of [27:27] seller are you? If you are just a seller and you're signing up with your social security account, you would be an individual. So, that is what is called a sole proprietorship here in the United States. You can open up a business [27:41] without having to open up an LLC or a business bank account or any of that fancy stuff, which I do recommend for 99% of people. If you're just kind of going to be a really good option. If you already have an LLC, which is a limited [27:58] liability corporation with your state, if you've already paid for one of those, then you would select business and instead of putting all your personal information, you'll also be putting in your business information as well. But [28:11] what's nice is if you start out as a sole proprietorship and you start making can always switch it to an LLC later on down the line. The last thing you need to do on this page is connect to your bank account. Now, if you work with a [28:26] really large bank, like let's say like Chase Bank or Bank of America, then you can just connect it by signing into your bank account and confirming it and it'll be connected right away. That's the best option. But if you work with a smaller [28:39] bank, like maybe a credit union or something really small, they might not be able to connect it immediately. And so this process might not be super fast. maybe 15 cents, 45 cents, and then you'll have to come back and tell Etsy [28:56] how much money they had put in your account and then taken back to verify your account. So all the more reason to actually open your account today and get processes. So, better to get it out of the way when you're feeling motivated to [29:12] going. So, the next screens are going to be share your billing info and your shop security. I didn't actually open a brand new shop and so I didn't want to go through the process of connecting my bank account and everything, so I can't [29:27] show you those screens, but it just be you filling out your information. Sometimes it's going to actually ask for photos of your driver's license or your passport to prove that it's you, but not always. And then I also recommend [29:39] setting up two factor authentication when you get to that step. So that way you have to enter in your code that you get sent to your phone if someone tries to log in on your device on a different account. Because the sad truth with Etsy [29:53] is that there are a lot of people who try and scam Etsy sellers. When you first open up your Etsy shop, you'll probably get a bunch of fake messages pretending to be Etsy is a really big one, saying you haven't verified your [30:06] email. There's a lot of different popular scams and unfortunately they do target brand new sellers. But I would recommend watching the video I put in the description on how to tell if it's a spam message and what to do with those [30:21] spam messages. So again, I'll link that video down in the description as well. Once you're logged into Etsy and you've got your shop all open, first of all, I just want to say congratulations. You are doing amazing things opening up a [30:34] next step. But if it doesn't take you to the actual shop manager and it just takes you to the Etsy homepage, then the way that you actually access your Etsy [30:46] shop, like the back end of your store, is up here on the right. You'll see this to the back end of your Etsy store. You can click listings. This will bring you [30:59] you will see that fake listing that we made. So, I want to show you how to delete it really quickly. This is just my mockup store for an example. This isn't my print on demand store.
