[00:01] references, and little things you might have missed in X-Men 97 season 2 episode 6, danger.exe. Welcome back, Screen Crush. I'm Ryan Ary, and we're going to break down this episode and also that huge ending, so spoilers are ahead. Now,
[00:13] this week's previously on X-Men is done by Val Cooper, the XFactor government Disher, the original voice of Gan Gray. Now, first, we see Roberto stumbling into the danger room in the first episode last season, just like Jubilee
[00:27] second to explain the danger room. Now, in the original comics, way back in the 1960s, it was filled with automated death traps, almost like the kind of like 2D obstacles that video game characters face. But after the X-Men
[00:41] encountered the Shar Empire, it was upgraded with hard light hologram tech in New Mutants issue 1. And by the way, that was 4 years before Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted the holiday. Now, when Jos Sweden and John Cassaday
[00:53] began their epic run on Astonishing X-Men, they turned the Danger Room into a sentient AI like we see in this episode. But it was actually revealed that the AI had become sentient years ago. But Charles kept it trapped so it
[01:06] could train the X-Men. So, it had a very good reason to hate Charles for keeping it confined for all these years, all while it was learning the most efficient ways to kill different team members. Danger in this episode is a little bit
[01:19] Notice that Wolverine's claws in the intro are back to normal. And the kids running away from the mob are Quentyn, Choir, Pennants, and Chamber. Now, and Frank Quietly. And just like we see in this episode, he's an arrogant jerk
[01:33] also a story line where he leads a rebellion at the school that was sparked when he wore this Magneto was right shirt that we see here. Chamber and Penn generation X by Scott Label and Chris Bachelo. Chamber basically like ripped a
[01:48] hole in reality that destroyed his mouth. And Pennants has an incredibly explore in a future episode, but I'm not going to go into here. And then we see Future Past. XFactor striking their cover pose from issue 71, the first
[02:02] appearance of this new team. And then the professor uses Cerebro, setting us up for the idea that danger is also made up of cerebro technology, which gives the Sentinel that attacked Janosha. and remember it last season. And there was
[02:16] actually one aspect of this story from the comics that I wish they would have adapted in the show. So in the books when Danger goes to Janosha, she takes over the Sentinel that was left in the ocean, but eventually the Sentinel gains
[02:28] millions of people. So it flies off into space to do some soularching in return for a future issue. And then we go to Charles's therapeutic exercise in the Magneto's death in a kind of self- flagagillating loop. A lot like Loki's
[02:42] time loop punishment in the TVA. It's >> because I'm scared of being alone. >> Now, you might think the professor was reliving this moment for some clue on how to defeat Apocalypse. But the truth is, he's totally broken and he is
[02:55] feel like they could have exasperated that guilt by keeping the plot line where he trapped the danger AI for years, but that would actually go pretty far into making Charles into a villain. This scene is not a one for one
[03:08] episode. For one, they cut out a lot of dialogue. >> The ones you care for will be your undoing. undoing. >> And they also added music,
[03:24] the music diagetic? Did Charles add the music to augment his mood? Danger Room. Play my worst breakup with Taylor Swift playing in the background. Now I Oh, person. Your breath smells. And I know cuz I'm a dog. Oh my god, you're right.

[05:10] danger.exe, named after the Windows program extension. The danger room's intelligence is first displayed as a single glowing light, an obvious reference to the How 9000 computer from 2001, a space odyssey. People copy this
[05:24] reference a lot, but I think it's more important to talk about why is portrayed as a red eye. It represents its lack of humanity because eyes are a window to the soul. And this is actually a theme that's been running in the background
[05:36] throughout this entire series that can tell us where the show is going in the episode of the original series, the X-Men fought the Sentinels, and they are a recurring villain throughout the show. Last season climaxed with humans
[05:49] actually becoming living Sentinels. And in the powers of X comic, we see that human beings continue to rely on machines to kind of out evolve mutants, as we heard in episode 1. >> You freak shows think we wouldn't find a
[06:02] >> So, the overall fight of this episode isn't mutant versus human or mutant versus other mutants. It's all about mutants versus machines. Mutants represent the variety of life, change, and growth, and evolution, while
[06:15] machines represent what makes us inhuman, as personified by a single glowing eye. Also, in this first scene, we see humans getting more advanced technology to fight mutants. So, Polaris disrupts an arm shipment that's to
[06:27] religious fanatics. Notice the hologram device they use looks like a grail, the Last Crusade. After all, both stories feature a religious cult that sea for what they believe in. >> Men will die. My soul is prepared. How
[06:43] William Striker, the villain from the landmark graphic novel God Loves Man Kills by Chris Claremont and the great Brent Anderson. It's an incredible book movie X2, where Striker was turned into a military general played by Brian Cox.
[06:57] Now, the woman receiving the shipment is Sister Anne, his right-hand man from the familiar. This is Carl Denty aka the executioner. The guy who stole Storm's says, >> "Time to rain fire and vibranium."
[07:11] >> And vibranium is of course the highly adaptable metal only found in Wakanda, making me wonder, is this setting up a plot line where the X-Men actually go to Wakanda to discover the source of these weapons. Now, in the comics, Storm does
[07:23] marry Tchala, and we can see a love triangle play out between those two and Forge. Now, notice that when Polaris is hovering, she is surrounded by magnetic Borealis, which is caused by charged particles hitting Earth's magnetic
[07:36] field. So, she just amazed the ship, taken after her old man, who sank a Russian nuclear sub and uncanny X-Men 150. Now, XFactor's headquarters is on a SHIELD, and it's of course the same one that we saw in the distant future in
[07:49] episode 1. this season. Val Cooper was a UN liaison to Janosha and it turned out that she actually knew about Bastion's plan to create living sentinels, but she did not know about the Sentinel sent to destroy Janosha. Now eventually she did
[08:01] the government sanctioned mutant team Xfactor. In the original series, Xfactor Comfort, where Forge was also a member Lorna so warmly later in the episode. >> Miss me so much you got yourself booted
[08:15] off the team, eh? Val's field leader is Havoc, aka Cyclops's brother, Alex Summers. Wolves Bane is flying the jet. Now, her real name is Rain Sinclair, and Mutants in the comics. Remember, Maisie Williams played her in the movie. On TV,
[08:28] we see the government crack down on mutants. Now, in episode 2, we saw XFactor arresting teenagers. And here, soldiers are arresting a woman and a child. And then notice this person giving a speech in front of a flag. This
[08:40] of the Friends of Humanity. Note their logo on the podium. and the flag is likely an homage to the opening of the movie Patton. Now, in the comic event Zero Tolerance, Creed was running for president and was almost elected. So, I
[08:53] wonder if they're going to play out a similar storyline in this show as involved in world politics. It actually makes sense that the anti-mutant power. So, let's talk about President Kelly. In season one of the original
[09:07] show, he was a senator who was known for anti-mutant policies. This shocking incident at New Salem Mall is just part of the growing menace of mutant >> But then after the X-Men saved his life, he became an ally for mutant kind and as
[09:20] president pardoned Beast. >> Beast, you're free. But political temperature and he is forbidding the X-Men from being a military task force, but they can still legally operate as a school. On the
[09:33] love interest from the comics, who interviewed the X-Men last season. Now, cat. And there's a couple possibilities here. One, this could be a Flurkin, the cats that you probably remember from Captain Marvel. But there's another
[09:48] possibility. In the comics, when Gambit joined XFactor, he brought along three They were named Oliver, Figaro, and Lucifer, and they all became mascots for the team. Also notice the statues behind Val Cooper are models of Sentinels,
[10:01] keeps a tribute to mutant killers behind her desk. Also notice she has this little ball swinging set on her desk. And remember, Magneto had a similar toy activates it, one of many subtle hints that she is Magneto's daughter. I should
[10:15] also note that in the comic, Polaris and Havoc were also the first two new X-Men to join the team. And for a long time, she thought she was Magneto's daughter, recently they changed this to yes, she is the daughter of Magneto. After Val
[10:28] looks out the window, mirroring how her father looked out the window of the glimpses of that moment in the climax of the episode, drawing a parallel between Lorna is cleaning out her locker, notice the box reads Salem Center moving

[11:36] to season 1. >> That old boy juggernaut sure made a >> Now, this is the opening ceremony for a new class of students, which is following a story line from that excellent Grant Morrison run. Morrison
[11:48] and quietly reinvented the X-Men to focus on the school, giving the team updated black leather uniforms that were inspired by the film. And later, we see form XCore. And there are also a lot of characters to cover here. So, here we
[12:01] go. This is Martha Johnson, aka No Girl. Now, this is not Jeff the Land Shark as Shark Girl. This girl was created as a background extra in Janosha in season 1. from the excellent Mike Allred, Peter Milligan run of X Force. And this is
[12:17] Beak and Dust. In the front row, we have Eye Boy whose powers let him see basically everything. Chamber, Penance, Sink, and Quentyn. And this is Pixie, another Janosha extra, Glob, Herman, Wing, Rock Slide. I have no idea who
[12:30] let me know. Now, what is very, very cool about this is how having these students opens the universe up to new storyline. Like the Morrison run was famous for focusing on its students since the X-Men had become this
[12:43] eradicate all of their old enemies. But the kids were scared and unsure of The reason Charles is focusing on no longer a military unit. But Kelly has given them a school charter to operate
[12:57] on American soil. Then it turns out that the orientation was actually in the danger room, which ironically later puts the kids in danger and also shows them always be humans who want to kill you, so you got to study hard. Here we see
[13:10] animals, and the weather. This is Arty killed in the episode Remember It. >> Don't worry, Leech knows Kalisto will Made of Light, like we saw in episode one. This is Boom Boom, aka Boomer. She
[13:25] then became a founding member of X-Force. And finally, this is Angel, another student from that Grant Morrison era. Now, Charles spends the episode mind. And this quote, >> "You must be pushed, tested to ensure
[13:40] >> Definitely sounds like his old friend talking through him. And also notice that the school has been renamed into the Xavier Institute of Higher Learning Youngsters. This was also a title change from the Grant Morrison Run that signal
[13:54] adopting a more collegiate atmosphere. And then Polaris returns, actually characters wore in the Grant Morrison Run. In the professor's office, she sees a photo of young Eric and Charles with an echo of Magneto's theme playing in
[14:07] an echo of Magneto's theme playing in the background. many times, but her room has not taken any damage over the years. And then
[14:22] notice her suitcase turntable, which is a nice touch. In the photos, we see her saw in the episode Cold Comfort, they used to be an item. And then here's a photo of her with the other women on the team pre- rogue joining. I guess Rogue
[14:35] during this time, so she hadn't joined the X-Men yet. And this photo shows the X-Men in their second generation costume. Notice that Havoc wasn't on the Comfort, the X-Men meet him for the first time. Beast enters wearing a
[14:48] several times in the original series. And I love that Beast makes one of his >> Every partying is a form of death, as every reunion is a type of heaven. But understands him. >> Try on Edwards. A bit obscure.
[15:03] >> Lorna also calls Scott Slim, his nickname from the early X-Men comics, during tea time with the professor, notice the tea set is in the X-Men colors of blue with gold trim. And he references Eday, meaning extinction day.
[15:16] This is taken from the story line E is for extinction. That's the first arc featured the destruction of Janosha. We saw that last season, so I think that's what Eday is referencing here. Now, in the background, notice that Morph is
[15:28] turning into Mr. Fantastic to play jump rope with the kids. Lorna also calls Xavier sir. Remember, she went to the school when she was a teenager, whereas other X-Men like Gambit, Rogue, and Storm, and Wolverine, they joined as
[15:40] this kind of honorific. He says, >> "I had hoped a piece of Magnus might still linger somewhere inside mine." First, I love that he still calls him Magnus because in the very first Magneto episode back in season 1, Marvel in the
[15:54] name. So, Charles always called him Magnus. Second, this idea that a piece of Magneto is in Charles's mind, is also what created the villain onslaught in the comics, which was frankly a really
[16:07] shitty story that drove me into the arms of DC for almost a decade. Less said about that, the better. Lorna, of course, name drops Wolverine, who is not this could be because it was taking place the same time as last episode, but
[16:20] Morph is currently at the school. So, I guess Wolverine is just off on a solo the danger room and realize that Wing this happens after Wing loses his
[16:32] powers. He's in the danger room thinking about doing some self-lifeet taking when the computer just eggs him on because Danger can't really kill anyone due to its safety protocols. Now, they cut the wing story line out for obvious reasons,
[16:45] little out of nowhere because it of course occurs offcreen. Oh, and notice how Bishop's shirt has a flux capacitor on it because he's a time traveler and that is the device. >> What makes time travel possible?
[16:58] >> Earlier, I mentioned that the X-Men's danger room predated the holiday in Star episode is using a triedand-rue Star Trek plot, the holiday episode, where environment is suddenly trying to kill the heroes. Notice how when Quinton
[17:12] makes a snide remark, he doesn't see the blades that everybody else dodges. It's arrogant puke he is. Man, I really hope they're setting him up for a story like favorites from the Grant Morrison run. But yeah, why is the room trying to kill
[17:26] >> Well, simple. She's obeying programming. When Xavier looped Magneto's death over and over, Danger tried to escalate the challenge by having Apocalypse actually programmed to give the X-Men real challenges. And so through repetition,
[17:41] her program is evolving. In fact, in a way, she's now emulating the philosophy of Apocalypse. >> Only the strongest survive, and you know better than anyone what my creator is too weak to understand.
[17:55] kill Charles dozens or hundreds of times. Now, Cerebro would have also scanned this moment directly from Charles's mind. And maybe danger read the moments where Charles shared his mind with Insabanur, which would create
[18:08] Apocalypse's consciousness. Notice that when Lorna uses her powers, they look like magnetic waves around the Earth, which is another sweet detail. And then cone-shaped heads. These look similar to the helmets of the Shi Imperial Guard,
[18:23] Danger was augmented with Shar technology. There are also lots of cool details during this fight, like how Lorna uses Wing's Gurnie to push brings us to Bishop's future. Notice how the kids immediately recognize Prime
[18:36] >> Prime Sinels. >> This is because Bastion's attack last season was a worldwide event. Polaris clearly got experience fighting these Sentinels because she rips away one of their arms, then uses it like a whip,
[18:48] alternate future, the Prime Sentinels enslaved mankind. Now, Danger isn't just deadly because she's a killer robot. Her telepathy shows her everyone's emotional angry and impulsive and that she is afraid of being like her father, which
[19:03] only makes her angrier and more impulsive. So, the entire episode is about the machine forcing Lorna to overcome the parts of herself that she hates the most. And then she has to evolve. Evolution is the central theme
[19:16] of this episode, as Charles also learns that the X-Men have to evolve beyond fight new threats. and instead they have to take an active role in the future of Bishop says >> always a damn killing machine
[19:29] >> because in the future he fights Sentinels. And just like in the comic, comic, it's to get revenge on Charles for holding her captive. But here, it's to further challenge him to create a threat that he has to evolve to defeat.
[19:42] But this means that the X-Men now can't legally go after danger. So they find a loophole by allowing two unofficial members to fight the AI. I guess they but this way the episode can stay focused on Lorna's character evolution.
[19:55] Now, in the original series, Janosha started off as a brutal government that That's the machine that creates more sentinels. Magneto returned here years later to rescue mutants to bring to his sanctuary of Asteroid M. Now, in the
[20:08] final episode of the series, Janosha was populated by mutant refugees who wanted course, all of this led to the tragic episode, Remember It, from last season. A mutant nation was finally formed, but then attacked by sentinels, resulting in
[20:21] the massacre of thousands or millions of people. This is the first time that Charles has actually made it to Janosha. And now he's looking at these statues of looked at Magneto's helmet after his death. Now, these were the statues that
[20:34] last season. He says, >> "Magnus told me he brought mutants to >> Now, I told him this a few episodes ago. I brought mutants there, helped make it
[20:46] >> And this is the reason the Magneto place of his friend. >> Are there no others better tempered to stomach the squabble of human diplomacy? >> I But Charles be gone, Magneto.
[21:01] >> Back then, Eric was asking himself what Charles would do, but now it's the other his old friend would do in his shoes. Everybody is now wearing the Frank wore in the movie Dark Phoenix. And when
[21:14] kind of always has Wolverine on her mind because she creates psionic claws to is something we're actually seeing in more of the modern X-Men comics. Mutants each other to have new effects. It's actually taken on the nickname the
[21:29] fastball special after the way Colossus throws Wolverine in the comics. And just against Charles in the Ashes of Janosha. And it shows us how much of a badass he this hover chair was built by Forge to respond to his telepathic commands, but
[21:44] this is the first time we've ever actually seen it actually armed, although this was spoiled by a recent Legends action figure for X-Men 97. Now, Janosha is the ashes of his greatest
[21:56] failure, and she's showing him how to live in a world without Magneto. Again, the AI is here to force Charles to evolve. Notice that her first-person POV shots are framed like the Terminators. And later, she dodges in a way that is
[22:08] Matrix. And the way she emerges from this fog is just like Apocalypse in episode 3. So again, we are seeing parallels between Danger and Insabanor as each villain forces Xavier to change and evolve. Danger holds an ax against
[22:22] Charles and says, >> "This time I go for your head." not taking Thanos out when he has the chance. You should have gone for the >> Then when Lorna interferes, she uses Danger's axe against her, which could be
[22:37] a reference to Richard Prior using an axe against an evil AI in female form in >> This sounds familiar. >> Yeah, they did in Superman 3, right? >> Then Danger absorbs all of Gene and Lorna's energy, evolving into a higher
[22:50] life form, and she forms the shape of a cross. Now, the extremists in the opening also stood like crosses when they were ready to die. and their evolve to a point where they could defeat mutants. And that is exactly what
[23:04] danger embodies. As we talked about earlier, this is feeding into the series ongoing theme of humans slowly allowing themselves to be replaced by machines in order to defeat mutankind. So to defeat danger, Lorna has to learn how to let go
[23:17] of her inner restraints and become more like her father. Xavier shares from his mind. This line, >> I am trying to be better, And then we see his reflection in his eyes when he looks out the window in
[23:32] Janosha, which is such a cool shot loaded with meaning because after all, we are looking at reflections of his memories. This also might be the moment that gives Charles the idea to form Xore since the tower they build is on this
[23:44] exact same spot. And then we see him protecting the Morlocks in the final I'm going. >> And then he hurls a train at the Jewish man to use a train against a machine that's designed to commit
[23:57] genocide. And I love that in Danger's last moments, we discover what she was actually after. Finally, strength. >> It's a very cool reveal. All she was trying to do was force the X-Men to
[24:09] inadvertently, Charles created a new life form that is exactly like Apocalypse. And that leads to him forming a new company, Xcore, which has a pretty long history in the comics. In the Grant Morrison run, Charles started
[24:22] it as a nonprofit to help people and create mutant goodwill around the world. But in the KCOA era, when mutants unite to form a new nation, Xcore became a global superpower and an aggressive corporate takeover machine. Now, at the
[24:34] grand opening, we see a reporter with a WHIH jacket. And this is the fictional Marvel projects and actually used to produce these cool digital shorts America: Civil War. I should also note that this is adapted from New X-Men 132
[24:48] where Charles visits the ashes of Janosha, looks upon a broken statue of Magneto's head, and then forms a branch of Exc. The X-Men even meet around a conference table just like in this episode. And in
[25:00] that issue, the X-Men fight Lorna, who was temporarily insane. So in this aftermath, new battle lines have been drawn. Val Cooper suits up wearing an does in the comics. The United States and other governments of the world don't
[25:13] appreciate Charles skirting their regulations by claiming sovereignty in could be setting us up for an animated version of the KCOA era where all human race. But in the show, at least
[25:26] for now, Xcore is formed specifically to stop the threat of apocalypse and not mutant extermination. So then we go to that threat, Apocalypse in the Acropolis in the Temple of Athena, goddess of wisdom and warfare and look up in the
[25:38] sky. That is Uatu the Watcher from the show What If. Now how he always appears in the sky before an absolute point in time. That is a point in the timeline that is such a huge turning point that it cannot be altered with time travel.
[25:50] We saw him over the sky in Janosha in the episode Remember it. And he might have appeared here in Daredo Born again. So, this is telling us that the rebirth of Gambit is a major event in this timeline. In fact, it might turn out
[26:03] that the Janosha massacre was only important because it led to this moment. much like the one Apocalypse built in the season 1 episode, The Cure. Notice similar machines here in the background. So, this episode follows through on the
[26:16] setup that Gambit is returning as Apocalypse's horsemen death. Now, this scene last season when he finds Rey's And in episode 2, we saw flashes of the horsemen standing over a coffin that
[26:29] probably belonged to Gambit. Gambit was buried in Louisiana, far from the stolen the body. His resurrection is like the creation of Frankenstein's monster with electricity pumped into a dead body on a gurnie, which is pretty
[26:42] the comics. So in the comics, Remy joins Apocalypse at first to spy on him, but Apocalypse plays on Gambit's distrust of leaving him. Now here, I guess Apocalypse could do the same thing. I
[26:55] mean, after all, Gambit saw Rogue kiss Magneto. So, for all he knows, she still chose Eric over him. So maybe Apocalypse is able to mess with his mind by rejected him. Now, I do think it's kind of strange though that Apocalypse, Mr.
[27:08] Survival of the Fittest, chose to resurrect a dead man to be his horsemen. But whatever, Gambit is back. Notice that as he is resurrected, the playing cards slowly turn into tarot cards. Now, one of our editors, IAS, has a deep pool
[27:20] of tarot knowledge and says that there is a specific order to the way these predictive reading, the cards mostly recap Ramy's journey so far. First, we see the three of pentacles, which could represent Gambit's adoption by the
[27:33] him with security and served as the first team that he was a part of. Next, reference to his relationship with spread is the Ace of Pentacles, which symbolizes new beginnings and strong
[27:47] future position of this spread, it shows the promise of a rich and stable future like Remy never got to see. In the next round of cards, we see the two wands on the left, the tower in the middle, and the five sword cards on the right. Now,
[28:00] strong willpower, but being undecided about how to use it. It is a fiery card, which also shows making hasty decisions, and this could represent the moment that Gambit was contemplating attacking the Sentinel in Janosha. The tower card
[28:13] confirms this by representing momentous change and doing something that changes also saw this card used to represent Billy's transformation into Wiccan and getting his powers in Agaza all along. Now in that show, Billy also had to face
[28:26] a death and a rebirth which we are seeing here with Gambit. The next card represents hollow victories and the emotional cost of winning. It talks worth the loss that it takes to get there. And of course, this shows the
[28:39] overall mood of the team after Gambit's sacrifice, which he made to save the people that he cares about. Now, the final three cards are death, the tower death card is often misunderstood as literal death, but it's also indicating
