> Source: [The Best Thumbnails? Truth-bait.](https://youtube.com/watch?v=BL_ZsAocsl0)

## Summary

The video discusses the importance of thumbnails on YouTube, emphasizing that they significantly impact video performance. The creator shares a personal experience with YouTube's AI-generated thumbnails, which produced an uncanny valley version of his face, and explains why he rejected it for his factual content. He also expresses frustration with the constant work of generating multiple titles for A/B testing, missing the simpler days of just uploading a video.

### Key Points

- **Thumbnails are crucial** [00:00] — Thumbnails matter a lot on YouTube and other platforms. The creator prefers a half-hour video with a less popular third section over poor packaging, as packaging attracts the right audience.
- **AI-generated thumbnails** [00:44] — YouTube's AI features can generate thumbnails from recent videos. For a video about a rock shop, the AI generated a giant cauldron with molten sugar and an uncanny valley version of the creator's face, which would attract the wrong audience.
- **Rejecting AI thumbnails** [01:40] — The creator makes factual content and wants it to be real. He wasn't in the shot, so using the AI thumbnail would mislead viewers and anger his audience. It would attract kids, not his target audience.
- **Constant work on titles** [02:07] — The creator dislikes having to generate three titles for YouTube to A/B test automatically. It's constant work, and he misses the simplicity of just uploading a video.

### Conclusion

Thumbnails are vital for attracting the right audience, but AI-generated ones can be misleading. The creator values authenticity over clickbait, even if it means more work.

## Transcript

100%. Thumbnails on YouTube matter so much. for whichever platform you're on, matters so much. I would much, much rather be doing
with a half hour running length, and maybe the third section isn't something people Now, and I really dislike that every single thing
But time, after time, after time, and the packaging is really important. think about what audience that's going to attract,
I'm kind of old school in this, YouTube's AI features in their studio If you're a YouTube creator,
"Generate some thumbnails from a most recent video," As I record this, my most recent video, a rock shop, for the British people watching.
like molten sugar flowing out of a cauldron, And what it generated was this giant cauldron And it generated this shot of me,
with an uncanny valley version of my face. It would've attracted people to the video That didn't happen.
I make factual content, so I want it to be real. I was holding the camera. I wasn't in that shot. and a lot of my audience would've been angry at me,
And a load of kids would've come along It's not who I'm pitching my video at. but it wouldn't have been the people
So yes, thumbnails matter an enormous amount, I also now hate that I have to generate three titles and YouTube will automatically A, B, C test them.
It's constant work. I do miss just uploading a video.
