[0:00] for the next 72 hours I'm going to work [0:02] like a mapa animator this means 12-hour [0:04] shifts and a crazy deadline of only 3 [0:06] days to make a highly complex animation [0:08] let's hope I can finish this in time and [0:10] not burn out I actually woke up at 7:00 [0:12] to be able to make myself some breakfast [0:14] to get the day started well my shifts [0:16] are going to be from 9:00 a.m. all the [0:17] way to 9:00 p.m. so eating a nice [0:19] nutritious breakfast was going to be [0:21] very important after breakfast I took a [0:23] little morning walk to warm me up for [0:25] the torture the light ahead then the [0:26] second the clock hit 9: I got to work my [0:29] first task was to plan out what I was [0:30] going to make and since it needs to be [0:32] mopa related I'll be animating a little [0:34] showdown between Gojo and sakuna not too [0:36] long after I started drawing I began to [0:38] feel terrible presumably from my lack of [0:40] quality sleep I'm 3 hours in and I just [0:42] finished the story board man I'm [0:43] exhausted I feel like I could faint at [0:45] any moment and I still have about 9 [0:47] hours left which really does not make me [0:49] feel any better I can't lie however I [0:51] kept on pushing forward as there is a [0:53] lot more that has yet to come this is [0:54] the plan for the project The First Cut [0:56] is going to show sukuna on the ground [0:58] looking up at Gojo who is standing on a [1:00] huge Rock there's also wind blowing in [1:01] the environment to add some drama the [1:03] second cut is a shot of sukuna face he's [1:05] going to transition from a serious [1:07] expression to an evil smile and the wind [1:09] is still blowing on him pause cut three [1:11] features a close-up of Gojo's face the [1:13] camera slowly Zooms in as he blinks and [1:15] hair blows in the wind cut four will [1:16] show fire igniting from sukuna hand then [1:19] in Cut five sukuna is going to raise his [1:21] hands to start charging up for an attack [1:23] cut six has a crazy camera zoom and [1:25] rotation shot up to Gojo revealing that [1:27] he's charging up his purple attack and [1:29] cut seven sukuna is going to pop up his [1:31] head and then raise his hand with fire [1:32] next in Cut 8 Suk kuna's fire arrow [1:34] attack will be revealed with the camera [1:36] moving away from his face in Cut N9 [1:38] sukuna will charge up the fire arrow [1:40] attack before quickly releasing it with [1:41] a ton of force and in the Final Cut the [1:43] camera will zoom out to show both of the [1:45] attacks colliding with each other all of [1:47] this has to be done in only 3 days MAA [1:49] animators have to deal with stuff like [1:51] this all the time and under a lot more [1:53] pressure than me so I'm only getting a [1:55] little taste of what they have to go [1:56] through on the daily given the [1:57] background heavy scenes I thought it [1:59] would be a good idea to use quite a bit [2:01] of CGI to save me some time and a lot of [2:03] headaches so I spent a significant [2:05] amount of time on blender making the [2:07] environment where the characters reside [2:09] only for me to learn a very harsh truth [2:11] I suck at blender I can't lie I [2:13] just wasted so much time trying to [2:15] figure out the CGI background it looks [2:17] horrible I'm breaking my head over this [2:19] I don't know what I'm doing anymore I'm [2:20] just going to do this in 2D sometimes [2:22] things just don't go the way you want [2:24] them to so I skip cut one for now since [2:26] it relies on a background to do the [2:28] animating my plan is to tackle all the [2:30] sukuna shots first and then move on to [2:31] the Gojo shots I then started with cut [2:33] two I drew all of the static elements [2:35] first then I animated his mouth [2:37] transitioning from serious to an evil [2:39] smile with proper spacing making the [2:41] animation look super smooth all right [2:43] now it's time for my little break I got [2:45] myself some Panera Bread I'm about to [2:46] Feast you already know and I'm kind of [2:48] sad cuz I'm kind of cooking right now [2:49] but you know what I'm saying we'll get [2:50] it back once I continue I couldn't find [2:52] anything on what MAA animators typically [2:54] eat so for this video I'll be eating [2:56] fast food in my 15 to 30 minute break [2:58] each day since I assume assume they [3:00] don't have much time to prep a nice [3:01] home-cooked meal most days I'm not going [3:03] to lie I don't even care about my mess [3:05] up no more this life is looking good [3:07] right now this is amazing next I worked [3:09] on animating the hair and the clothing [3:10] I'm not too proud of how this part of [3:12] the cut looks but I really don't have [3:13] the luxury to make everything to my [3:15] standards if it wasn't obvious already I [3:17] tried to match the colors as closely as [3:19] possible to the show and I think I did a [3:20] good job with that I'm also keeping the [3:22] shading to a minimum to stay consistent [3:24] with the look of season 2 as you can see [3:26] I have a little over 4 hours left in the [3:28] first day and I've only completed one [3:31] animation cut so let's see if I'm able [3:33] to pull it off cut four what's next [3:35] hands Lord help me I'm just kidding I'm [3:37] not scared of drawing hands everything [3:39] was coming along very nicely up until [3:41] making the inet of the fingers I was [3:43] having some pretty bad inconsistencies [3:45] with the thickness of each finger which [3:47] caused me a lot of problems and led me [3:49] to spend a significant amount of time [3:51] trying to fix that I then animated the [3:53] fire coming out of his hand which was [3:54] done in straight ahead and it was such a [3:56] nice therapeutic moment in the day for [3:58] me I honestly thought it gave all pretty [4:00] cool again I tried matching the colors [4:02] of the fire to the fire arrow scene in [4:03] the anime I noticed there was some pink [4:05] and the fire in the anime which I think [4:07] looks beautiful so I made sure to [4:09] implement that into my own animation as [4:11] much as I could then I got to work on [4:12] Cut five which is similar to cut two for [4:14] the most part I drew sukuna and yet [4:16] again animated the hair and clothes [4:18] waving then I sketched out sukuna hand [4:20] coming up which looked really cool I [4:21] can't lie before being able to finish [4:23] this cut the clock hit 900 p.m. meaning [4:26] it was the end of the first day I fing [4:28] did it I did did it look at that it's 9 [4:31] it is 9: after the day ended I took a [4:34] nice hot shower and went to sleep [4:36] shortly after and after a long day of [4:37] work I should get some really good sleep [4:40] right no not really it's all right I [4:42] guess I'm getting myself some Morning [4:43] Sun for my circadian rhythm 7:43 I'm [4:46] about to eat my breakfast and then I'm [4:48] about to go for my morning walk and get [4:50] back to work this is truly a beautiful [4:52] day today I'm going to have this Jimmy [4:55] Dean sandwich and some Celsius and [4:57] that's about it cuz um I'm not trying to [4:59] cook today I'm trying to get right to [5:01] work as fast as I can now this right [5:03] here this is [5:06] epic day two going to be animating for [5:08] the next 12 hours I'm going to try to [5:10] get as much done try to finish most of [5:11] the sakuna shots I mean I I kind of have [5:13] to finish them all today it's time to go [5:15] to work and it's time to work hard I [5:17] continued right where I left off I [5:18] cleaned up the animation of the hand [5:20] colored it shaded it in and animated the [5:22] fire I then moved on to cut seven and [5:24] cut eight I stuck both of these together [5:26] in the same animation timeline since [5:27] they're kind of connected the thing [5:29] about animating close-up faces is you [5:31] need to be able to draw them [5:32] consistently because even if a tiny [5:34] thing is off it'll end up looking like a [5:36] totally different character so what I [5:37] ended up doing was tracing the previous [5:39] onion skin of sukuna face and then [5:41] placing it wherever I wanted it to go [5:43] thank God for digital art I also made [5:45] sure the hair animation follows the [5:46] movement of his head so that it flows [5:48] more naturally animating the camera [5:49] movement for cut 8 turned out to be [5:51] pretty hard to do especially getting the [5:53] force shortening to look right I then [5:54] animated the hand coming in which is [5:56] going to be completed once I add the [5:57] fire to it I envisioned this cut being a [5:59] lot smoother but obviously with a time [6:01] crunch my vision for the sequence wasn't [6:03] going to be fully realized I think the [6:05] worst part about this entire thing is [6:07] how it could be relatively late but then [6:10] you start thinking about it and you're [6:11] like hold on I still have another 6 [6:14] hours of animating like this doesn't end [6:17] but on the bright side I got myself some [6:19] Chick-fil-A you already know got myself [6:21] a yogurt with some fruit and some cookie [6:23] crumbs and I got myself a spicy chicken [6:26] sandwich for about a feast next I [6:28] started animating the fire on both of [6:30] the cuts which took an extra couple [6:32] hours I just finished this little [6:33] sequence and I'm kind of sad because I [6:35] feel like I could be a lot better I [6:37] can't I can't really do much I got I [6:38] just got to keep on moving on because I [6:40] don't have enough time to make the [6:41] drawings better and do more in between [6:43] so I need to lock in super super hard [6:45] tomorrow I'm not even kidding I spent [6:47] the majority of the day on these two [6:49] cuts I then immediately started [6:50] animating the last cut that features [6:52] sakuna since the charging up of the [6:54] attack is going to be a bit long each [6:55] frame is going to be fairly spread out [6:57] making it look less smooth but necessar [6:59] at this point in order for me to have a [7:01] chance of finishing this animation I [7:02] sketched out the rough animation and [7:04] even made an impact frame for the [7:05] release and after a long day of [7:07] animating my second day was coming to an [7:09] end day two is officially finished I'm [7:12] nervous I might be able to do it I might [7:13] not I really hope I can finish it I [7:15] really do it's all up to me to be honest [7:17] so I got to lock in it's truly a [7:19] beautiful day today too bad I won't get [7:22] to spend it outside also you see how [7:23] like my lens is getting foggy it's so [7:25] humid outside oh my God holy all [7:28] right so today is June 6th today is the [7:31] last day 7:26 a.m. I'm going to have the [7:34] same breakfast as yesterday [7:36] M [7:41] yummy it's about to be 9:00 so it's time [7:43] to get to work I started the work day by [7:45] cleaning up the cut I was working on [7:47] yesterday I then added some extra impact [7:49] frames and some cubes and dust flying [7:51] everywhere to add more impact to the [7:52] release even though it's not fully [7:54] realized the animation ended up looking [7:56] pretty dope okay so I finished all the [7:58] sukuna shots now it's time to move on to [8:00] the Gojo ones I think it's actually [8:01] looking pretty good it's only 11 right [8:04] now so I still have a long time but I [8:06] still have to make all the backgrounds [8:08] and paint them in and that takes a [8:09] really long time so I need to keep on [8:12] working and I have to do a crazy like [8:14] rotation shot so that one I might not be [8:16] able to finish but I'm going to try my [8:18] best regardless I then went on to draw [8:20] Gojo as majestically as I could then I [8:22] animated his hair waving from the wind [8:24] and then his clothing bro actually looks [8:26] like he's straight out of Studio GI I [8:28] don't know if I uh I don't know if I [8:29] like that it's 1:00 p.m. so I only have [8:32] 8 hours left the shot that I was mostly [8:34] scared of was up next I didn't know how [8:36] the heck I was going to pull this often [8:37] time till I remembered I had made a [8:39] really crappy environment in blender so [8:42] I opened that up downloaded some basic [8:44] rig of a human being placed them on the [8:45] Rock and roughly animated the camera the [8:48] way I envisioned it then I imported the [8:49] video onto clip Studio paint and used it [8:51] as a guide to know where everything [8:53] should be the thing is my camera [8:54] animation and blender is extremely rough [8:56] and was a lot longer than what I had [8:58] anticipated so I skipped around the [9:00] video to draw only the key frames I [9:02] would need to make this cut work the [9:03] more I drew the more depressed I grew [9:06] ooh bars it was truly starting to look [9:08] hopeless this is so sad I actually have [9:10] like no time to make this good like [9:12] everything is so off there's nothing I [9:13] can do man this is actually so sad 3:00 [9:15] p.m. eventually came around meaning that [9:17] it was lunch break time for my last meal [9:20] I got myself some Chipotle let's see [9:22] they actually hooked me up when you [9:23] order ble online they barely give you [9:26] any food but it looks like um pretty [9:28] good not bad I then went on to do the [9:31] cleanup which took a lot of time but [9:33] this workload and this annoying due date [9:35] was also starting to take my soul this [9:37] is so much work man this is so much work [9:40] and to think this is like a fraction of [9:42] what mapa animators go through every [9:44] single day and I'm already like ready to [9:46] finish this and never look back and just [9:48] be done with this but this is some [9:50] people's job like it's actually insane I [9:52] have no idea how they do it every single [9:54] day I'm struggling just like trying to [9:56] finish this one animation and like yeah [9:58] I have a due date but like I don't have [10:00] the pressure to do it because I don't [10:01] have a contract with like a company and [10:03] whatnot also I'm doing this at the [10:04] comfort of my own home the fact that [10:06] there's such low pay in the Japanese [10:08] anime industry I would find it very [10:10] difficult to keep myself altogether then [10:12] I colored in every frame and added a [10:14] little bit of shading next I animated [10:16] purple which looked like an actual piece [10:18] of donkey but as time was running [10:20] out I finished cut six okay I pretty [10:22] much finished this shot it doesn't look [10:24] that bad but it is 6:30 I got another [10:27] cut left then I got to draw the [10:29] backgrounds and then I got to composite [10:31] everything so I still got a lot to do I [10:33] ended up skipping cut 1 and cut 10 [10:35] entirely due to how much time I had left [10:37] and went directly to drawing all of the [10:39] backgrounds which ended up looking [10:40] extremely rough I just drew some of the [10:42] backgrounds like pretty fast so I'm [10:44] going to start exporting everything and [10:46] put everything in After Effects for [10:47] compositing the other two shots that I [10:49] have left that I haven't animated yet [10:51] aren't 100% necessary so if I'm not [10:53] going to be able to complete the [10:54] animation at least I'll have something [10:56] where you could watch it and not be [10:58] confused so that's what I'm going to do [10:59] right now and if I have time to do the [11:01] other shots I'll do them this is [11:03] probably the saddest part of this [11:04] project because if the background had [11:06] been better and more detailed every shot [11:08] could have looked astronomically better [11:10] I didn't have much to work with in terms [11:11] of backgrounds for compositing I only [11:13] Drew one long background and a couple of [11:15] middle grounds so I kept on reusing [11:17] these assets over and over again at this [11:19] point in time I kept on looking at the [11:20] clock and the lack of time made me work [11:22] faster but also Messier which led to [11:24] some of the shots not looking all that [11:26] great and unfinished I tried my best to [11:28] make everything in the composition look [11:30] as consistent as possible I attempted to [11:32] work miracles with the limited amount of [11:34] backgrounds I had made and even though [11:36] it looks super shitty it sort of gets [11:38] the job done as the clock was reaching [11:39] N9 I actually quickly went back and [11:41] animated cut one which I had skipped [11:43] earlier the animation would have been [11:44] weird if it started with sukuna smiling [11:46] and then Gojo smiling back it could give [11:48] people the wrong idea you know what I'm [11:50] saying I went 15 minutes over time but [11:52] after 36 hours of work in only 3 days [11:55] this is the final product only 16 [11:58] seconds of animation this is how it is [12:00] for MAA animators every single day my [12:02] goal for this video was to show why some [12:04] of the cuts in your favorite anime look [12:05] a bit unfinished and unrealized and [12:07] that's because a lot of the times they [12:09] are sometimes the deadlines are [12:10] extremely unrealistic and it's due to [12:12] the horrible work schedules and abusive [12:14] work conditions a lot of animators face [12:16] MAA animators have expressed their [12:18] frustrations obviously feeling upset [12:20] that they weren't able to deliver their [12:21] best work due to these terrible [12:23] deadlines and now I can sort of share [12:25] that feeling it's sad to not be able to [12:27] make something you're proud of and have [12:28] thousand have people Dogpile on you and [12:30] call you worthless but that's the anime [12:32] industry and anime fans for you if you [12:34] want to watch me suffer further you can [12:36] watch the video that's up on the screen [12:37] right now where I animated the world's [12:39] most offensive manga in only 3 days
