## Summary

YouTube has updated its Shorts algorithm for March 2026, shifting focus from the first 3 seconds to custom thumbnails and titles, as over 70% of traffic now comes from search and browse features. The video outlines five key changes creators must make to grow faster, including optimizing thumbnails, posting frequency, driving external traffic, tracking new metrics, and channel settings. It emphasizes that these changes can make growth easier if implemented correctly.

### Key Points

- **Traffic Source Shift** [0:35] — Over 70% of Shorts traffic now comes from search and browse features, making the first 3 seconds less important than the title and thumbnail.
- **Custom Thumbnails** [0:54] — Custom thumbnails can be added from a mobile device after uploading, significantly increasing click-through rates.
- **Posting Frequency** [4:12] — Post 2-3 times a day, at least 5 days a week, to capture the 'land grab' in search results and browse features.
- **Safe External Traffic** [4:44] — Drive external traffic by encouraging viewers to search for your channel or keywords, not by sharing direct links.
- **Cross-Posting Tool** [5:59] — Use Metricool to cross-post Shorts to multiple platforms and schedule content.
- **Key Metrics** [7:43] — Focus on 'stay to watch' rate (over 75%) and average view duration (at least 80% of video length for videos over 30 seconds).
- **Channel Optimization** [11:34] — Optimize channel settings: set country, add keywords (channel name, competitors, niche), enable automatic dubbing, and turn off third-party training.

## Transcript

YouTube just released a brand new
YouTube Shorts algorithm for March of
2026. And if you make the five changes
that I share with you in this video,
it's going to make it easier than ever
before for you to go viral on YouTube
Shorts, for you to get more subscribers
than you could have ever imagined, and
for you to get monetized on YouTube
right now. But I will warn you, if you
skip these five things, it's going to
feel like it's harder than ever before
to grow. But it doesn't have to be
because once you make these changes,
it's like turning on easy mode for
growing on YouTube. Change number one is
that the first 3 seconds of your video
is no longer the most important part
when it comes to YouTube shorts. Because
now there's something that's even more
important. Because if we look at where
shorts traffic is now coming from in
March of 2026, 70% or more of it is
coming from search results and from
browse features. And guess what? The
first 3 seconds of your video doesn't
matter as much when we're talking about
those placements. And what matters
actually even more is going to be your
title and your thumbnail. So, the first
thing that we need to talk about is how
to actually add a custom thumbnail. So,
let's say that we're going to come over
here and we're going to upload a video.
For example, I'm going to grab this
video right here. What you're going to
want to do, and by the way, you can only
do this from a mobile device, is you
want to upload your video to YouTube
Shorts from your mobile device. So, we
can see right here, it's going through
and processing. And then once this is
actually done processing, this is going
to allow us to choose that custom
thumbnail. We're going to click on next
right here. We're then going to see this
pencil icon. You could scroll around and
find the icon that you want. For
example, maybe I want to add this. And
then I could add in some text right
here. And what that is going to do is
increase the odds that people end up
actually clicking on your content. And
yes, this makes a massive difference.
Let me prove it to you. Because look, if
we come into a lot of my viral shorts,
for example, this one right here got
over 2.3 million views. We could see
that there is a custom thumbnail on here
with me pointing and saying, "Turn on
these settings to grow faster on
YouTube." But that's not the only one
that has this. If we come back out here,
we could see that this video also has
the same thing. If we click on analytics
here, we could see that this video has
gotten 1.3 million views. And again, if
we zoom in over here, I added in an
arrow here, and I told you that you need
to click on this little thing. And guess
what? And all these things right here,
helping these videos rank for search,
helping them get views 24/7. And this is
one of the biggest unlocks right now for
YouTube shorts. So, please make sure
you're adding in these custom thumbnails
every single time that you upload them
because it's going to make the
difference between your video getting
clicked on and going viral or people
just scrolling right by your video. Now,
change number two is you need to make
sure that you're not posting too much
and you're not posting too little right
now on YouTube shorts. And how
frequently you should be posting is
really going to come down to what niche
you're in and how frequently there are
new content ideas for your niche.
because I know some creators that post
20 times a day on shorts and I know
other creators that only post three
times a week on shorts. So, what you
want to make sure that you're doing is
you want to look at your competitors and
see how frequently they're going through
and posting on YouTube shorts because
ideally you're going to want to post a
little bit more than they are because
this is going to allow you to do three
things. One, it's going to allow you to
get out more piece of content that are
able to rank for search. And it's also
going to allow you to just publish
content way sooner and actually be able
to get more views because right now
there is a massive land grab going on
with YouTube shorts. You want your
shorts to show up in the browse features
aka on the homepage when your ideal
viewer logs on YouTube. And in addition
to that, you want to show up in the
search results. So, what you need to
make sure that you're doing right now is
you need to come up with a list of 25,
50, 75, even 100 different words that
your ideal audience is going to be
searching for. Because now these are
going to be eligible to show in three
different placements. The first place
that these going to be eligible to show
is when somebody does a search on
ChateBT or on Gemini or on Grock or on
Claude, guess what? Your YouTube short
could be eligible to show up. In
addition to that, you could be eligible
to show up in the YouTube shorts
results. And then the final placement is
actually when people search for things
on Google now, they get shown short form
videos. And if you are able to show here
in any of these places, it's going to
increase the odds that your video is
going to go viral and that people are
going to begin to find your YouTube
channel 24/7. But again, this is really
going to come down to how much content
you're putting out and whether or not
you're putting content out at the
frequency that allows you to get those
land grabs before your competitors do.
Which is why I'm urging you right now to
please try to post two to three times a
day on YouTube shorts, ideally at least
5 days a week. I know it might sound
like a little bit of work, but trust me,
I'm about to show you something that
makes it way easier to do. And I'm also
going to share with you how big of a
difference this actually makes. Now,
change number three is you need to make
sure that you're driving traffic from
outside of YouTube to your YouTube
channel. And there's a right and there's
a wrong way to do this. The wrong way
for you to do this is to put a YouTube
video in your bio or to send people a
link of a YouTube video. That is not
what you want to do. YouTube is going to
look at this as invalid traffic and it
actually could end up hurting your
channel. Instead, what you want to make
sure that you're doing is you want to
make sure that you're getting people to
go through and search for the terms that
you want to rank for or even searching
for your name on YouTube. For example,
this creator right here does an
absolutely amazing job at this and it's
helped her gain over a million
subscribers on YouTube. If we come over
to her content right here, for example,
this video right here, we could see my
YouTube channel is your number one
source. She's not putting a link in
there or anything like that. She's just
telling people she has a YouTube
channel. Or if we come over to this
video right here, we could see that she
says here, if you want to find free
courses on all these topics, search for
Betty and business on YouTube. Now,
guess what? If we come over to YouTube
and we do a search for this, I want to
show you what actually happens. We could
see that the first thing that shows up
are all of her shorts right here. Her
channel shows up and then if we scroll
down, we could see a bunch of different
viral videos. Now, you want that same
exact thing to happen when people are
searching for you. And the easiest way
for you to do this is to make sure that
you're posting your YouTube shorts
across Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, and
and any other platform that has short
form content. And the easiest way that I
found for you to be able to do this
without creating extra work is using
metricool.com. Because Metricle lets you
post to all these different platforms
from just one dashboard. And you can
even schedule out those posts for the
future so that you could batch create
like a week worth of content. And it's
not something that you have to go in and
you have to do every single day because
this is going to help you drive more
traffic to your YouTube channel and get
discovered the right way. And the best
part about Metricool is that if you go
to the pin comment below, you can get 30
days free access to any of their premium
plans with Code Robert. And on top of
letting you post to multiple platforms,
they also allow you to add your
competitors and spy on them to see
exactly what topics and what formats are
getting them the most views. And they
make it incredibly easy for you to be
able to respond to all of your private
messages, all of your DMs, all of your
comments on all these different
platforms from one location. So, what
are you waiting for? Go to the pink
comment below and get started with 30
days free access to any of Metro's
premium plans today with Code Robert.
Change number four is you need to make
sure that you're updating what metrics
YouTube is actually looking at because
it's not the metrics that you thought it
was. In fact, they completely changed
what they care about right now. And I
want to go through some of my viral
videos to actually prove to you what
metrics you should be looking at, what
you should be tracking, and what you
should be ignoring because not every
metric on YouTube is created equal. And
if you've ever looked at the YouTube
analytics, you probably got overwhelmed
because there's thousands of different
metrics, but 99.99%
of them don't matter. So, if we actually
come over here, I'm going to do a search
for all my videos that have gotten over
100,000 views recently. And I want to go
through each of them to prove to you
exactly how this works. So, if we look
at this first video right here, we can
see it got over 600,000 views. The
reason for this is twofold. And
literally, look at this one video. Got
me over 10,000 subscribers. If we scroll
down here, date to watch is over 75%.
You need to make sure that this is over
75%. That is non-negotiable. If yours is
not over 75%, one of two things is wrong
with your video. One, the topic isn't
really something that your ideal
audience was interested in, so they just
left immediately. Or the hook that you
had in your video wasn't good enough.
And you want to make sure that you're
adding a text hook in your content. In
fact, if we play this one, we could see
that the text hook pops up right here.
Change a setting to increase your views.
And we can see if I zoom in here that
it's bright yellow. It's got the logo.
Captures people's attention. And that's
why people stayed to watch this video.
Now, if we come over to my other
content, we're going to see the same
exact thing is true for this video right
here. If we scroll down, 160,000 views,
91% stayed to watch. Now, if we come to
the next video here, 150,000 views,
we're going to see the same thing here.
This is 77%. So, it doesn't really
matter how high that number is. It just
needs to be over 75%. And then the next
thing you want to pay attention to is
your average view duration versus the
length of your video. If your video is
less than 30 seconds, so 30 seconds to 0
seconds, this average view duration
number needs to be greater than the
length of your video for your video to
go viral. Now, if we look at a lot of my
viral videos, we could see that it
wasn't the case that my video was less
than 30 seconds. So, if we look at a
video like this that's 49 seconds, we
actually need to pull out a calculator
for this one. So, I'm going to come over
here. I'm going to grab my calculator.
We could scroll down and we could see
that the video view duration is 43
seconds and the length of this video was
49 seconds. So if we take 43, divide
that by 49, we can see that's 87%. You
want to make sure that it's at least
80%. So on a video that was 49 seconds
long. If we come over here, type in 49
*8. We need at least 39.2. So aim for 39
seconds of average view duration in
order for this video to go viral. so
long as you would have kept people for
that long, your video would have ended
up going viral, as long as you have both
that stay to watch number and the
average view duration. Then the final
thing that you need to make sure is true
is you need to make sure that your
YouTube channel is actually optimized
with all of the right settings, all of
the right descriptions, your homepage
setup, and so much more. And we're about
to dive through all of those things and
how you can make sure that they're set
up. Now, in order to show you all this,
I actually wanted to walk through one of
my other YouTube channels cuz this is a
new channel, so it's probably more
relatable for you guys. So, the first
thing that we need to make sure that we
do is if we come over here to the top
right hand corner and we click on your
channel right here, we need to make sure
that your homepage is going to be set up
correctly. Now, ideally, what you want
to have is your popular videos, then all
of your videos, then all of your shorts,
and then all of your posts right here.
Now, the way that you're going to do
this is when you come to your homepage,
you're going to be able to click on
customize channel right here. From here,
what you're going to be able to do is
you're going to be able to click on home
tab right here. And this is where you'll
actually be able to figure out all those
different layouts. And if we click into
this, we could see that you could remove
sections. You could change where they
show up and you could add more sections
if you wanted to or if you had other
sections and then you could view it on
your channel, you could publish it. It's
very easy to make those changes. In
addition, from over here, you need to
make sure that you have a banner image
set up that ideally is going to be
incentivizing people to subscribe. You
want to make sure that you have a
profile picture set up that ideally is
going to be bright, is going to stand
out, and it's going to help people
remember who you are. In addition to
that, your name and your handle.
Ideally, they should be the same. And
you want to try to have your niche in
your handle. For example, I talk about
AI tools on this channel, which is why I
have AI inside of my name. Now, from
here, the other thing that you want to
do is come over into your settings and
make sure that you have the correct
settings enabled. And there are going to
be several of them. The first one that
you want to look for is coming into
channel right here. You want to make
sure you have the correct country of
residence. And you want to make sure
that you have keywords here. These
keywords should contain three things.
The first thing is going to be your
channel name, which we could see right
here. The second thing are going to be a
few of your competitors, which we could
see right here, Matt Wolf, AI Advantage.
The third thing is whatever you are
posting about, you want to have all
those different keywords in here so
YouTube understands what your videos are
actually about. The next setting you
need to care about is going to be under
advanced settings. You want to make sure
that this says no, this channel is not
for kids. And you should only be doing
this so long as your content isn't
exclusively for kids. In addition to
that, if you scroll down here, you want
to make sure that automatic dubbing is
turned on with these same settings that
I have right here. And if we keep
scrolling down even more, you want to
make sure that clips, this is checked
on. You want to make sure that video
quality enhancements is turned on, both
for visual and for audio. And you want
to make sure that hype is here. And this
one is really important. Third-party
training, turn this off. You do not want
this happening on your channel. And that
final thing you want to make sure that
is true is if you come over to feature
eligibility that all three of these
showed enabled. If none of those are
true or if you have any of these
settings messed up, could be the reason
you're not getting the reach that you
want. Now, if you enjoyed this video and
you want to learn in the best time to
post on YouTube shorts right now to go
viral in 2026, I would strongly suggest
you check out this video right here that
walks you through exactly that. I'll see
you over there.
