## Summary

This video compares Upwork and Contra, two major freelancing platforms, to help viewers decide which one suits their career stage and goals. It breaks down each platform's fees, features, and ideal user profiles, concluding that the right choice depends on individual circumstances.

### Key Points

- **Two Platforms, Two Philosophies** [00:47] — Upwork is the established giant built on scale, trusted by millions, with unmatched job volume and proven infrastructure. Contra is the emerging challenger with a curated, portfolio-first experience designed to put more money in freelancers' pockets.
- **Upwork's Volume Play** [01:28] — Upwork offers unmatched job volume with hundreds of postings every hour, ideal for new freelancers building a work history. However, it has commission fees up to 15% (as of May 2025), a competitive bidding war, and a paid 'connects' system to apply for jobs.
- **Contra's Zero-Commission Model** [02:26] — Contra offers 0% commission for freelancers, keeping every dollar earned. It focuses on portfolio building and direct client relationships. Disadvantages include lower job volume and the requirement of Contra Pro at $29/month or $199/year to apply, plus clients also pay a fee per contract.
- **Key Feature Comparison** [03:09] — Upwork uses a 15% sliding scale commission and a connects system where you only pay for jobs you apply to. Contra has zero commission but requires a Pro subscription, which is wasted if you don't apply to jobs. Upwork has no client fee, while Contra charges clients a $29 fee. Both have AI features: Upwork's Uma and Contra's Indie AI for lead discovery.
- **Who Wins for Whom?** [04:44] — New freelancers should choose Upwork to build reputation fast with high job volume and a diverse client base. Established pros should choose Contra to eliminate platform fees on repeat clients and keep their full rate. A hybrid approach is also viable, using Upwork for short-term jobs and Contra for long-term ones.
- **Key Takeaways** [06:11] — Upwork offers breadth of opportunity and is the best starting point for building volume and credibility. Contra delivers a sustainable direct earning model, ideal for established pros ready to stop paying platform cuts. The right platform depends on career stage, existing client base, and long-term financial goals.

### Conclusion

The choice between Upwork and Contra hinges on your career stage and financial priorities. New freelancers benefit from Upwork's volume, while established pros can maximize earnings on Contra's zero-commission model, and a hybrid approach can offer the best of both worlds.

platform, then there are many options to choose from and you have to choose the right one if you want to be successful. Today we're having a look at Upwork, one of my personal favorites. However, with so many options available out there, is
it right for everybody? We're also having a look at Contra and we are going to have a look particularly at its benefits, its advantages, and who should actually be using each one of these platforms.
Welcome to What's Next. Let's jump into this video. Let's let's jump straight in. We're looking at Upwork and Contra and we need to choose the right freelancing platform if we want to take this up as a career and make it serious.
So, two platforms, two philosophies, one decision. Let's check it out. The first look at the freelance landscape all in all. So, the freelance landscape all in all. So, the established giant, which is Upwork,
it is built on scale, trusted by millions of clients worldwide, and it's got unmatched volume, it's got a proven infrastructure, and a decade of market dominance. Contra, on the other hand, the emerging challenger built on a
promise. A curated portfolio-first experience A curated portfolio-first experience designed to put more money directly in freelancers' pockets. Sounds very inviting.
inviting. Upwork, then, has the volume play. So, it has unmatched job volume with hundreds of postings every hour. Ideal for new freelancers building a work history and a reputation from scratch.
Some of the disadvantages, their commission fees up to 15% as of May commission fees up to 15% as of May 2025, which moved from a fixed fee of . This is creating a very competitive bidding war and the paid connect system
to apply for jobs just becomes a little bit more of a difficult decision-maker. leave it down in the comments section below. I'd love to hear back from you.
Let's carry on with this video. The clientele, a broad spectrum from bootstrapped small businesses to Fortune 500 enterprises. Basically, nearly every industry and budget is represented within Upwork.
Contra, on the other hand, offers 0% commission for all freelancers keeping every single dollar that you earn in your pocket. It has a strong focus on portfolio building and direct client relationships. Some of their
disadvantages, unfortunately, is they have a lower job volume and Contra Pro have a lower job volume and Contra Pro is required at $29 a month or $199 a year to apply. Now, clients also pay a fee per
contract, so this becomes more expensive for them and it also pushes them to remove themselves from the platform once they have hired a good, reliable Having a look over here at some of the key differences over here. So, we're
having a look at their features. So, let's talk about their freelance commission. We covered it already, a 15% sliding scale versus zero commission. Their application system, which we use
connects on Upwork, which you buy and then you use as a credit to bid for jobs. In Contra, you need that Pro subscription. So, to compare those, if you have connects, you can use them and pay basically for the jobs that you
apply to. And if you don't apply to any jobs, your connects are not used. And on Contra, you pay $29 a month, you don't apply for any jobs, and now you've wasted $29 for absolutely no reason. There was also a
client fee. So, client facing on Upwork, if you are hiring somebody, you don't pay anything for that. On Contra, there is also still that $29 fee for the client as well.
That's a lot of money. Also, their AI features. Now, I have covered a video on Upwork's AI. So, you can go ahead and check that out. I'll put a little banner up top. It is Uma and it is pretty good. And
then we have Contra which is their Indie AI and this basically is a lead discovery AI agent. Then we have the last thing, job volume. We're looking at Upwork, high job volume. Contra, moderate to more
curated, which could be good because in a talent pool, if you have less people that are more talented, it might be good for hiring agencies as well as the freelancers in that talent pool. So, who wins for [clears throat] who?
What are we looking at here? So, new freelancers, if you are a new freelancer, you're trying to break into the industry, Upwork, it's built for reputation. So, if you want to build reputation fast with access to high job
volume and diverse client base, it's an ideal launch pad and you can basically get a couple reviews and really start working from there. You can start doing jobs from $5 all the way up to unlimited amount. That's really the
reality of it. Then the established pros is Contra. So, they already have a network. These people eliminate the platform fees on repeat clients and they keep your full rate with zero commission friction.
already, you're a little bit more established, you have a bit of a reputation behind you. Why not take a hybrid approach? Many people use more than one platform and you have no exclusivity to each
platform. So, many freelancers use Upwork for maybe short-term jobs and then use Contra for long-term jobs. Maybe that's an option. At the end of the day, you need to make a choice
that takes into consideration your needs, your circumstances, your capabilities, and your skill set. Some of the key takeaways here, just to sum this up, Upwork offers the breadth of
opportunity, and the best starting point really for freelancers building volume and credibility. Whereas Contra, on the other hand, delivers a sustainable direct earning model, which is ideal for established pros that are really ready
to stop paying platform cuts. The right platform really does depend on your career stage, your existing client base, and your long-term financial
