# How to Find Viral Video Ideas in 10 Minutes (The Outlier Method)

> Source: [How to Find Viral Video Ideas in 10 Minutes (The Outlier Method)](https://youtube.com/watch?v=VPD3j_b-2v0)

## Summary

The video teaches a data-driven method called the Outlier Method to help YouTube creators quickly find viral video ideas. The host, Alan, argues that top YouTubers don't create ideas from scratch but instead adapt what is already proven to work on the platform. The goal is to stop wasting time on blank screens and instead use a 10-minute research system.

### Key Points

- **Outlier Definition** [2:01] — Outliers are videos that get 3 to 10 times more views than a channel's average, proving the idea resonates with the audience.
- **Outlier Score Formula** [2:57] — The formula is: current video views / channel average views. Minimum score of 5x for high confidence, 10x for exceptional ideas.
- **Look at Small Channels** [4:33] — Study small channels in your niche to avoid 'familiarity bias' — viewers click based on idea strength, not creator fame.
- **10-Minute Research Process** [5:28] — Steps: search keywords, filter by views, calculate outliers, verify channel, save top 10. Can be done manually or with tools like VidIQ or One-Out-of-Ten.
- **Key Takeaway: Adapt, Don't Invent** [7:09] — Use the outlier method to find proven ideas and adapt them. Never invent from scratch — adapt what already works.

## Transcript

Hello and welcome to this YouTube video
ideiation course. Today I'm going to be
teaching you how to stop wasting your
hours watching at a blank screen and
come up with video ideas that gain
clicks and they grow your channel. For
those of you who might be asking, I'm
Alan. I've been on YouTube for quite a
while now and I'm hosting a YouTube
operator academy which is a school
community for growing on YouTube. There
are lots of courses where we completely
remove the overwhelm. It's a stepbystep
process helping you get good on YouTube.
The video ideation is the part of the
course that's available here and it
contains of multiple modules which we
are going to be going through within the
next couple of videos. So today we're
going to be talking about how to find
viral video ideas in 10 minutes. So, you
should be stop wasting your hours
standing at the blank screen scratching
your head and trying to figure out what
should I post next. It's dependent on
your own niche, obviously. But today,
we're going to be talking about the
proven outlier method that top YouTubers
use to never run out of content ideas.
And if you thought top YouTube content
creators are coming with those ideas
from scratch, you would be dead wrong.
Actually, most of the small YouTube
creators like you, me, and others are
wasting countless hours trying to figure
out with new concepts, new ideas instead
of just looking what already works on
the platform. It's literally that
simple. However, YouTube is a very, very
difficult platform because there's so
much content. And today, we're going to
be showing you how the top YouTubers
never create from scratch. They
strategically find what's already
proven, what's already working, and they
just adapt it to their unique style. So,
there is a better way to discover viral
worthy content in just 10 minutes. So,
let's get right in. So, first and
foremost, what are the outliers? The
outliers are the videos that receive 3
to 10x more views than the average
videos on the channel. So, they
outperform the channel's average by 3 to
10 times. The question is, why do they
matter? Obviously the creator has tapped
into something which resonates with its
target audience which resonates with its
viewers. That means more people are
clicking, more people are watching and
based on that it's possible to evaluate
what's the idea behind it. So basically
those are the proof that the idea works
and the advantage is that outliers
actually reveal exactly what the
audience wants to watch. So you don't
need to be guessing what should you be
watching next or how should you be
structuring that video. Just looks what
works and copy adapt with pride. So
let's talk a little bit about the
outlier score formula. And the outlier
score formula is actually quite simple.
It helps you calculate how much better
is a certain video performing compared
to the channel average. So basically
what you're looking is at the views. So,
the outlier score says, what are the
current video views versus the channel's
average views, and you want to be
looking for a minimum score of 5x for a
high confidence ideas that are proven to
resonate with your audience. 10x if you
can actually nail something that's
really good. So, where to find those
outliers? Well, obviously, you want to
match your format. You want to be
searching something with the same
content type and form. If you're looking
for short form, then it's YouTube uh
reals, Tik Tok, Instagram stories, and
these kind of things like YouTube
shorts. However, if you're going long
form, just open up the long form and try
to look for something that's within your
niche. But do pay attention to the
outlier score. And you might also also
want to do a cross-platform hunting. So,
for example, if you're doing YouTube
shorts, you might want to be checking
Tik Tok or an Instagram res. Ideas that
work on other platforms sometimes do
translate brilliantly to another without
proper adaptations. But remember, you
have to stay within your niche. Focus on
channels covering similar topics to
yours. Relevance is critical. What works
in gaming won't necessarily work in
cooking. It might, but it's there's no
guarantees. Also, it's really important
whom to look those uh outliers at where
you would should be looking. A lot of
people do the mistakes where they
actually look for the big content
creators and there's an error in this
way. If you think about it, the big
content creator is already wellknown and
there's a lot of people watching it for
the creator because they already know,
they already like the creator. Whereas
if you look at the small channels for
example within your niche, you want to
be looking at the small channels and
then you want to be looking at the
outliers because there is no familiarity
bias. So viewers click because the idea
was compelling or title and thumbnail
spark the intrigue. So it's basically an
evaluation of pure idea and packaging
strength completely removing the
familiarity bias and a risk of people
actually clicking because they're just
interested in that content creator.
Also, it's possible to get higher rep
replicability. If it worked for them
without fame, it might also work for
you. So, let's go through the 10 minute
research process. First, you search
through keywords. And you can actually
do it by typing in into YouTube whatever
is that you're looking for. Then you can
actually go filter views and see which
videos perform the best, calculate the
outliers, verify the channel, and save
the top 10. Now, there is a lot of tools
that you can actually use to do that.
I'm going to just show you a couple of
them. One of them is for example one out
of 10. You can actually use it to search
for various outliers and actually it
also helps you with the thumbnails and
titles generation but it helps you also
identify the uh outliers. Then there is
the Vid IQ which is a little bit more
pricier model but it also has the
outlier tool and the outlier help you
search and find various videos within
your trusted niche. I have been using
Vid IQ for quite a while and it's
actually pretty good because it
immediately shows you the outlier score
and you can provide filters in terms of
recency and other content. So here are
just some of examples that are relevant
to my main Groundworks channel. So this
streamline process eliminates the hours
of aimless scrolling. In 10 minutes you
can have a curated high list of video
ideas proven by data. So your research
toolkit you have the YouTube search
where you can actually manually look at.
You can do manual analysis or use the
tools that I have just shown you. And uh
then we have the video idea library
which you want to be storing those ideas
somewhere. I'm using notion but if
you're using some other tool that's also
fine but you have to use the toolkit. So
the key takeaway I want you to have is
never run out of ideas again. Outliers
are the proof. They demonstrate idea can
work for you. No guesswork required.
Small channels is where you should be
looking for those outliers because they
are in the same situation as you. So if
idea works for them there's a chance it
might be working for you. Remember that
you should be focusing within the same
niche. Then my guess is don't invent.
Adapt what's already working instead of
creating your own ideas from scratch and
use the 10 minute system. Find these
proven ideas using the outlier method.
And video ideas are really important for
your YouTube journey. And that's why
they're really prominent in my YouTube
operator tool, a complete system for
running your channel. You can actually
jolt down ideas in seconds and then
review them and approve them in which
case they're going to be ready for
progression onwards. And to help you out
further with evaluating your video
ideas, I have pre prepared an episode
idea evaluation checklist [music] where
you can actually jol down your idea and
check it against the proven methods.
What is working already on YouTube? And
we even have the AI section which helps
you evaluate and add suggestions. So
this is a part of the YouTube operator.
Link will be provided in the description
below. But as a permanent present for
me, I have actually exported this
YouTube video idea evaluation checklist.
You can use it completely for free. Link
will be provided below and you can
download it completely for free from the
Gumroad store. This is my gift to you to
help you jol down your and work on your
ideas. So, we have covered the outlier
method. We've recaped that you should
not be inventing your ideas yourself.
You should be finding them on the
outliers and try to use proven methods
that that have already generated clicks
for other small content creators to help
you jumpstart your channel. Now, in the
next video, I will be going through the
idea breakdown system, how to steal
video ideas like Mr. beast which is the
seven Lego brick method and it will be
available here or through the school
YouTube community. So, thank you very
much for watching and I'll see you in
the next
