Did you know there is a movie called Hope that's been in theaters for like two weeks now? It's kind of flown under most people's radars. It's a Korean monster movie. And I got a buddy named Duncan who's been preaching the gospel about how good it is.
He's seen it, I think, three times, he said. He calls himself a Hope head now. So with all of this glaze, I knew I had to go see it. So last night, after getting spread wide open in the Jinx-y Fortnite tournament,
having my shit spready Kruger'd out there, I decided to get my ass over to the theater to go check out Hulk. And now that I've seen it, I want to give you a little review on it here, give you my thoughts.
We're going to get into spoilers here, of course. Now, first and foremost, this is more than just a monster movie. Like, it is a monster movie. But it's also, like, two hours and 40 minutes.
It's like this is an almost three-hour-long epic that wants to do so many things, especially in the second half. I actually got very strong vibes of a game I love called Advent Rising,
if any of you have played that game, where it's extremely ambitious and doesn't quite reach the things that it wants to in the pursuit of these grand ideas. But Hope, I think, is a very good movie.
Like, I did enjoy it a lot. more so the first half than the second half, but I do think this is definitely a movie worth watching. So, the first half is like a very well-shot,
like, traditional monster movie. There is a mysterious creature wreaking havoc on a small town, and we follow the police chief as he's trying to hunt it down,
and for the first, like, 45 minutes, we don't even see a glimpse of the monster. We're just seeing the carnage. Dead bodies straight about the streets, body parts and limbs everywhere. We'll sometimes see them shooting at something but the chiefs can't get there in time to join them
to help shoot, and instead we'll see the car fly and just blow somebody up like a guy running away screaming, and then a car comes flying at, you know, mock speed and just pops
him like a balloon. Or like, a door will be thrown off a building and kill somebody that was running away. And like, for the first 45 minutes it's extremely tense as we're following
the police chief try and help kill this monster that's destroying, wreaking havoc here. It's so good. I loved that. There were so many good scenes.
We're introduced to, like, another character that he encounters, so this is obviously, like, a very scary situation, so the chief, like, starts firing at any sound he hears. He gets really jumpy and he starts shooting at a normal guy.
Normal guy like what are you doing dumb asshole and then they like team up to try and you know two the monster and you know that doesn exactly go as planned but eventually what happens
is the police chief does have the monster cornered with another guy who's helping shoot, and we get our first actual look at the monster, and it's human-looking. It's definitely taller
than a human, stronger than a human, faster than a human, but it has human features. Long black hair. It looked like some kind of old witch, like basically like Gruntilda from Banjo-Kazooie.
I actually loved the creature design here. I thought that was so surprising, and it got me really curious where it's going to go from here, because why does it bear like a human resemblance
in this way? And it's also just so cool, that scene. They start shooting at it, and the monster breaks free, and it has the guy's brother and uses it like a baseball bat, and then
slams into the police chief's buddy there that came along with him, and just pops his head off, and they both kind of, like, burst into blood and all that, like, it was very
cool, it was, like, slow-mo'd, it was, it was wild, and then the police chief tanks a direct hit from this monster, and then they go on a very high octane chase, and the monster
moves like a titan from Attack on Titan, like extremely fast and nimble and ferocious, throwing motorcycles, all kinds of things to try and kill the police chief, and then eventually
he is joined by fellow officer Yim, and she shows up, she's got a fucking grenade launcher, so she's noob-tubing the thing, blows its leg off, just peppering it with bullets, and then they eventually do defeat the monster together.
And that's only the first act. Then we get into trying to piece together the mystery of, well, where'd this monster come from? What is it? And we learn there's more. There's like an entire hunting party that's out in the forest, also tracking, like, carnage,
locating what they thought was the monster, and then they find an alien spaceship. Which I think is very cool. I like the idea that these are aliens. But it's when they arrive at the alien spaceship and then we're introduced to, like, the other monsters
that things get a little rocky for my personal tastes. We meet the alien queen of this race, who is Alicia Vikander, who you might know as Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider reboot movie.
And she has a right-hand man, like the big muscle of this alien race, It Michael Fostender He plays Maveo I think was the name of the alien And these aliens are talking to one another about like the future of their species and all of that Like in like the end of the movie
there's, like, a giant ship that crashes here, and, like, the humans are like, what the fuck is that? And the aliens are like, the ship has fallen. And then they go into, like, this really deep lore and planting these breadcrumbs of this storyline
that they've been on here and, like, what they're doing here, like giving little bits and pieces, like tiddlywinks of their culture and lifestyle. From out of nowhere, like at the end here, it's like really wacky.
Like, that's why I'm saying, like, it kind of reminds me of Advent Rising in that regard, where this whole movie, it has been a monster movie. They're fighting that main monster. When they kill that monster, they're learning more about the other monsters that are out there
because a witness who was having violent diarrhea in the forest noticed that there were, like, four other of them. three other of them. So, we know there's other monsters there.
What we didn't know is that there's a whole alien race that is distinctly different from those monsters that we've already encountered. And we still don't know what the relationship is between them, like why that one looked more human while these other ones look like more mass effect aliens.
But this whole time it has been fighting these aliens, it's fighting these monsters, which is cool. It's like, yes, there's a lot of times you need to suspend your disbelief, like especially with Sun Ki. he is fucking superhuman
that guy squares off against Michael Fassbender alien who is able to just break trees with ease just like fucking karate chopping trees in half and he will just get like blasted and ragdolled by Michael Fassbender
will watch some kid fly like a million miles per hour at a tree have his back break in half and he like folds like a briefcase, bounces head and neck off of another tree and just keeps getting brutalized and every time keeps standing back up
and then he even while escaping from Michael Fassbender in a car, he's hanging out the side of a car, the driver swerves, and he hits a sign, and you see his body, like, blow up, like, blood
splashes against everyone, so you're left to believe he's dead, but he's not. He also survives that, too. Like, so this guy, he's hype, like, I think the aura of Sung Ki is immaculate,
but it is absurd that he keeps surviving all this because he is supposed to be a human. Yet he's more durable than even these aliens we're watching here. But anyway, the point that I'm saying with, like, the wackiness is,
they introduce these aliens, and now we're watching these aliens communicate and, like, tell their story at the very end here, and it is... it is wild. Like, the ship now crashes, these aliens are talking about their culture
and how they're going to, like, you know, save the alien queen's son, like change their fate and Michael Fossman is going to be able to do it so he reaches in grabs his heart offers up his heart to change the fate Like all of this comes out of nowhere right at the end very wild Obviously it sequel baiting here but it is so crazy
Like, I don't even think it's bad, I just think it's, like, outlandishly wacky to pull all of that at the very end for what has so far for two hours been we're fucking fighting monsters, we're killing aliens,
and just trying to survive against these extremely powerful entities. Now, along the way, they do introduce some other very interesting things, such as, like, a weird guy who killed a baby alien, which they assume the first monster that resembled a human was looking for their baby.
That must have been the mother looking for that baby that this wacko, weird guy, creepy guy had shot, this fucking freak. And then he becomes, like, an integral member of the party, and is also the one that was driving that swerve that had sunk in at the sign.
So, like, there's something very fishy about that guy. That's the idea they're planting here. Like, they do introduce, like, some bigger concepts outside of just killing the monsters before the end, but at the very end it's like, and then aliens,
and then these aliens have this crazy thing going on with this giant ship that's falling that now just exploded and crashed over there so now they have to save their race somehow, like, whatever that entails. It's so much to take in all at the end.
but I did enjoy it like I did have a fun time with Hope yeah you've really got to suspend your disbelief because the plot armor of like Shunki in particular is I've never seen anything quite
like it but again overall I did like the movie I actually really liked the visuals too yeah the CG can get a little wonky doesn't bother me though that didn't bother me in the slightest
it looked good it was constantly keeping me engaged with the characters with the fighting the monsters. And to be honest, even the alien plotline, I am so fucking curious to see where they take that.
I'm hoping there's a sequel. I really would love to see a hope, too, to see where the fuck this goes because it is just escalating craziness throughout this film, culminating with the reveal of these aliens
and what's happening there with their ship that just crashed and everything now. So, like, it's a wild movie. And I do appreciate that. There is a lot of meat on the bones here, so I did have fun. It's just that second half is...
I think there's some misses in there. But who knows? Maybe I only feel that way because I haven't seen Hope 2 yet and haven't seen how they're going to flush those things out. That's entirely possible.
I'm so interested to see where it goes. So, yeah, I enjoyed it. I liked the first half more than the second half, but I did enjoy the experience as a whole. so yeah, that's really about it
