[01:38] Music A cryptic rollout, glitchy visuals, and fragmented online clues set the stage before Imaginal Disc dropped in August 2024. Mika Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin built a 15-track synthetic universe centered on a fictional character named True.

The trio first played together in 2018 after Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and Julian Baker had each spent the intervening years releasing acclaimed solo albums of their own.
[07:57] Each retained their individual songwriting fingerprint, with the album thriving on the contrast between them. Not Strong Enough became the breakout track, especially after live performances turned its repeated refrain into a festival-wide sing-along.
[08:16] The recording process itself was fragmented by the trio's competing solo schedules, which makes the eventual cohesion all the more striking. The record went on to claim perfect scores from DIY, NME, and Rolling Stone,

[11:50] handled largely by Soundwave and Antonoff. The 12-track album blends stripped-down beats with dense lyrical layering that demands close listening. This is Lamar's first album released independently of Top Dog, Entertainment, and Aftermath.

Three tracks feature mariachi vocalist Dara Barrera, which signals Lamar's deepening interest in Latin musical influence within hip-hop.
