[0:00] 91% retention 93% retention 97% [0:04] retention one after another again and [0:07] again and again through my personal [0:10] experience in making engaging shorts and [0:13] my research into the strategies of top [0:15] creators I've created an in-depth [0:18] process for consistently getting high [0:20] retention by following the methods in [0:22] this process you'll be able to keep [0:24] attention so well that you can't stop [0:27] going viral so without further Ado let's [0:29] let's [0:31] [Music] [0:35] begin the shorts algorithm uses [0:38] thousands of methods to decide if your [0:40] content is worthy of getting views [0:42] however there is one single element that [0:44] is undoubtedly the biggest factor in [0:47] this every Creator acknowledges it as [0:49] the single most important metric in [0:52] terms of going viral and I'm sure you've [0:54] heard of it as [0:55] [Music] [0:57] well just this simple line on the graph [1:00] will decide if your short gets 10 views [1:03] or 10 million views so let's make it as [1:05] flat as possible now this upcoming [1:08] advice can be used across all niches but [1:10] for each person it might apply [1:12] differently so in these next few minutes [1:15] consider how you can tailor this [1:16] information to fit your [1:24] videos if you were to imagine your [1:27] content as a car then the composing of [1:29] your shorts would be the engine without [1:31] a good engine it doesn't matter if you [1:33] have a super nice car a Lamborghini [1:35] because you won't be going anywhere so [1:38] to explain the concept of composing we [1:40] can start by drawing a simple line on [1:43] one end we have the hook and on the [1:45] other end we have the payoff the line [1:47] connecting the two is our storytelling [1:50] I'll go through each point in this [1:51] drawing and show you how to maximize [1:53] retention in all of them let's begin [1:56] with the hook and I'll get to the others [1:57] later your hook is basically the intro [2:00] of your short it should be as concise [2:03] and easy to understand as possible since [2:05] we don't want to end up confusing the [2:07] viewers or giving them too much [2:08] information the hook should also explain [2:11] the general idea of the video and [2:13] mention a payoff now it might seem [2:15] difficult to fit all this in less than 5 [2:18] seconds but it doesn't have to be [2:20] complicated find for yourself how this [2:22] Creator communicated a simple but [2:24] effective hook to his viewers [2:30] [Music] [2:32] yes even without a voice this simple use [2:35] of text is still a very strong hook his [2:38] viewers want to see what he's referring [2:40] to in the caption which is a good reason [2:42] for them to keep watching we also [2:44] immediately understand the concept of [2:47] the video because the visuals convey [2:49] what game he's playing and the situation [2:51] he's in which shows that you don't [2:53] always have to physically explain the [2:55] idea for further reference here's [2:57] another very good hook but this time [2:59] it's a completely different Niche my [3:01] grandma thinks Christmas is expensive so [3:03] I'm going to prove her wrong by giving [3:04] her the best Christmas present with $5 [3:07] let's get started so your hook can look [3:09] differently depending on your Niche and [3:11] video type but as long as you can set up [3:13] a payoff and convey an interesting idea [3:16] you'll be able to make your viewers [3:18] stick around but only initially we still [3:21] have to keep these people engaged until [3:23] the end of the short or else they'll [3:25] just scroll away before reaching that [3:27] point that's where storytelling comes in [3:29] in and we can start progressing down the [3:32] line now this part is interesting [3:34] because how you use storytelling will be [3:36] very dependent on your Niche and video [3:39] type if you make voiceover or original [3:41] content then there's a lot more room [3:43] with what you can do for that group I [3:46] recommend you integrate conflict into [3:48] your script have things go wrong and [3:50] then resolve the problem with the [3:52] solution also use a lot of suspenseful [3:54] words like but and however because it [3:57] keeps people on edge waiting for what [3:59] you say next next now in a more General [4:01] sense there is something that's [4:03] important to focus on in storytelling [4:05] for every Niche faceless or not and [4:08] before I reveal it try to catch it for [4:10] yourself in this short this is a [4:12] Starbucks and down the street is another [4:14] Starbucks and today I'mma start some [4:17] beef howdy can you give me just like a [4:19] really fun drink yeah we can definitely [4:20] do that oh my gosh that's so fun [4:23] Starbucks a went off this is the most [4:25] fun drink I've ever seen I pulled up the [4:26] Starbucks B and did what I had to do and [4:28] then they said that you guys make super [4:30] boring drinks okay so I was just going [4:32] to see if you guys can make a more fun [4:33] one than them yeah definitely this is [4:35] what the Starbucks down the street made [4:36] the genuine shock on tor's face right so [4:39] in the hook Ryan sets up the plot behind [4:41] the video and now we want to see who [4:43] will make the better Starbucks drink [4:45] then you might have noticed he used a [4:47] hidden storytelling tool in order to [4:50] keep us engaged throughout the short [4:52] let's see even though the concept itself [4:54] wasn't very tense there was a lot of [4:56] anticipation he framed things in a way [4:59] that made made it impossible to scroll [5:01] because of the building up towards the [5:02] payoff the hidden tool that Ryan used [5:05] here was tension and obviously it worked [5:08] because this short has nearly 100 [5:10] million views so tension is the most [5:13] important instrument of Storytelling and [5:16] it can be applied in very broad [5:18] circumstances as long as you're building [5:20] suspense in your viewers now that we've [5:22] resolved the storytelling and the hook [5:24] let's move on to the payoff another [5:26] integral part of your content so [5:28] remember how I said ear earlier in the [5:30] hook that you had to mention a payoff [5:32] well now that we're actually here it's [5:34] very important that you meet the [5:36] expectations you set Ryan set up that [5:39] there would be a competition between the [5:41] two Starbucks but what if he reached the [5:43] end of the short after all of that [5:45] tension and buildup and said well it's a [5:47] tie that would be lame wouldn't it you [5:50] want to satisfy your audience because [5:52] the real trick to getting a ton of [5:54] retention is returning viewers if you [5:57] disappoint someone with your payoff then [5:59] you'll have lost a potential loyal [6:01] subscriber who would have given you a [6:03] lot of Engagement in the long run so [6:05] make sure to fulfill the payoff and look [6:08] at that we've successfully completed the [6:10] composing [6:13] [Music] [6:17] pathway remember what I said earlier [6:20] about composing being the engine of your [6:22] shorts well you can think of editing as [6:24] the physical part of the car the wheel [6:27] the seats and the walls in the same way [6:29] that a car couldn't function without an [6:31] engine it's just as useless without a [6:34] body to start let's talk about your [6:36] pacing attention spans are pretty much [6:39] fried nowadays especially when it comes [6:41] to short form platforms like YouTube [6:43] shorts therefore we need to go to Great [6:46] Lengths to make sure our content is as [6:48] fast-paced as possible I remember on an [6:51] old channel of mine in the gaming Niche [6:53] I would spend a whole hour getting [6:55] footage for a one minute short that way [6:58] I could condense all of the most [6:59] action-packed moments to make the pacing [7:02] quick and entertaining this is so [7:04] important because people nowadays value [7:06] their time much more why would they [7:09] spend 30 seconds watching your short [7:11] that isn't even entertaining when they [7:13] can just scroll away and watch Mr Beast [7:16] so keep your shorts as fast-paced as [7:18] possible as for certain tricks like [7:21] captions Transitions and zooming there [7:23] isn't one concrete answer that I can [7:25] give it's heavily dependent on the style [7:27] of your content so I recommend recommend [7:29] you search for other creators in your [7:31] Niche and just do what they [7:33] do now there's a whole another side of [7:36] editing as well this aspect of it is [7:38] often overlooked which is a shame [7:41] because it plays one of the biggest [7:43] roles in your engagement see if you can [7:45] find what it is in this short these are [7:47] the internet's weirdest websites spot [7:49] the drowning child.com is like a [7:51] lifeguard simulator where you're given a [7:53] video of real people in a swimming pool [7:55] and you click who you think's drowning [7:56] to see if you're faster than the [7:58] Lifeguard what's my star name.com let [8:00] you type in your name and will return [8:02] with how a Starbucks employee will find [8:03] a way to spell it wrong did you catch it [8:06] as the sections of the video switched [8:08] the music he used changed as well the [8:11] soundtrack you pick for your shorts can [8:13] be used to make the audience feel [8:15] different moods during different parts [8:17] of the short this gets them more [8:18] invested into the video and enhances [8:21] your storytelling but be careful because [8:23] if you pick the wrong soundtrack then it [8:26] can backfire heavily another huge use of [8:28] music is for building tension I talked [8:31] about it earlier so you already know how [8:33] important tension is if you pick a [8:35] certain song with a buildup then you can [8:38] create tension from thin air and [8:40] manipulate people into staying engaged I [8:42] can't show an example of this because of [8:44] copyright but this channel is super good [8:47] at it so check out his content to see [8:49] what I'm talking about sound effects [8:51] again depend on your Niche and type of [8:53] content if you can use them then add [8:55] them to certain moments for more [8:57] engagement but if it doesn't fit your [8:59] video style then it's not a big [9:08] deal the definition of Leverage is using [9:11] something to its maximum Advantage if we [9:14] go back to that car analogy leverage [9:16] would be like attaching a jet booster to [9:18] the back the car does work without it [9:20] but we can make it go a lot faster and [9:23] what I mean by this is there are some [9:25] clever tricks to maximize retention [9:28] outside of the traditional composing and [9:30] editing some of these tricks will seem [9:32] pretty weird but don't underestimate how [9:35] effective they are the first one is [9:36] called engagement baiting do something [9:38] that urges people to comment for example [9:41] an intentional mistake until this guy [9:43] slides the watermelon through it or a [9:45] really crazy moment people will want to [9:48] point it out and you might not know this [9:50] but your retention increases as people [9:53] use the comment section try it for [9:54] yourself go to a short and you'll notice [9:57] that when you leave a comment the short [9:59] keeps playing in the background so get [10:01] people to leave comments and you'll see [10:03] a massive increase in your retention [10:06] another trick related to comments and [10:08] this one is kind of underhanded but it [10:10] works very well here's how you do it [10:13] once you post your short switch YouTube [10:15] accounts so that people don't know it's [10:17] you then go to the Post you just made [10:20] and leave a comment saying something [10:22] like that ending was crazy or I didn't [10:24] expect the ending most people check the [10:27] comments before even watching the short [10:29] so they'll see that and wait until the [10:31] end because you've made them curious [10:33] about what happens the funny thing about [10:35] this one is a lot of shorts creators use [10:38] this without you knowing it next time [10:40] you check the comments on a short and [10:42] see one like that just know it might [10:44] actually be the Creator in Disguise the [10:47] third one is very simple but it's also [10:49] very effective go to one of your shorts [10:51] and find the related video section click [10:53] it and link one of your other shorts a [10:56] lot of people will click this link and [10:58] since they're already in invested in [10:59] your content they're more likely to [11:01] watch for longer now I have a lot more [11:04] leverage tips to share so I've linked [11:06] them in the description for completely [11:08] free check those out if you're [11:09] interested hopefully you got a lot of [11:11] value from this video subscribe if you [11:13] did and I'll talk to you in the next one
