# If it Fits in Retail, it Doesn't Belong in Classic

> Source: [If it Fits in Retail, it Doesn't Belong in Classic](https://youtube.com/watch?v=iggxmIvdqUc)

## Summary

The video discusses the visual identity crisis in Classic WoW, arguing that new armor and weapon models clash with the classic aesthetic. The creator proposes a 'retail litmus test' to determine if an asset belongs in Classic, and emphasizes the importance of visual cohesion to the game's world.

### Key Points

- **New Assets Clash with Classic Style** [00:00] — New models for armor, weapons, and other assets do not express the classic art style and would not look out of place in retail WoW.
- **The Retail Litmus Test** [00:13] — If an asset would fit in retail without standing out, it likely doesn't belong in Classic. This is a useful litmus test for evaluating new additions.
- **Visual Cohesion is Critical** [00:42] — Blizzard has stated they want the world to be the main character again, making visual cohesion extremely important. New assets can make the world feel like a mess.
- **Relevance and the Litmus Test** [01:07] — Not everyone needs to care about this issue, but it's relevant because Blizzard themselves have highlighted it. The litmus test is a good question to ask before adding anything to the game.

### Conclusion

The video argues that new assets in Classic WoW should pass a 'retail litmus test'—if they fit in retail, they don't belong in Classic. Visual cohesion is key to preserving the world's identity.

## Transcript

I want new models, new armors, new weapons, new ways to express and showcase an art style I love dearly. These do not express that art style. Meanwhile, they would not look out of
place in retail. Hell, some of them just seem to be backports of retail models. That's true. If you put this in retail, no one would blink an eye. Maybe that's the litmus test. Would this fit in retail? If the answer is yes, then it's like, okay, well then use it as a retail
asset because they're very different. You don't have to find any of this a real problem. If the only reason you play classic is because you like the simpler rotations, the longer leveling experience or whatever else, then awesome. If the developers themselves highlight how they want the
world to be the main character again, then it should be fair to point out that visual cohesion is extremely important to the world. And right now it feels like a mess in some areas thanks to
these assets. I think that's a very fair thing to say. You don't have to care about this, but it is still highly relevant because Blizzard has come out and said it is to them. And there's a lot of
people that do, but it's very relevant still. Once again, good litmus test. If you ask yourself, could this go on the retail trading post? Could this go on to retail and they wouldn't call it out? Then it's probably not a good fit for forever, right? Very, very good question to ask
before actually putting anything into the game.
