## Summary

This is a detailed scene-by-scene breakdown of *House of the Dragon* Season 3, Episode 2, presented by Eric Boss of New Rockstars. The analysis explains the episode's events, highlights subtle details, and compares the show's portrayal to the source material *Fire and Blood*. It focuses on character motivations, thematic depth, and setup for future events, particularly Rhaenyra's emotional arc and the capture of King's Landing.

### Key Points

- **Subtitle & Opening Tapestry** [0:00] — The opening tapestry updated to reflect the Battle of the Gullet, showing Corlys Velaryon defeating Sharako Lohar (though actually Alan), Jace's death, and possible propaganda elements.
- **Underwater Opening & Possible Deeper Mystery** [1:07] — The episode opens underwater among sunken ships. A long-haired corpse floats into view; speculation includes Sharako Lohar or a Merling/Deep One, or even Alice Rivers watching.
- **Dragon Seed Cleanup & Baela's Grief** [2:00] — Ulf on Silverwing, Hugh on Vermithor, and Addam on Seasmoke join Baela (on Moondancer) to torch remaining Triarchy ships. Baela carries Jace's body, raising questions about logistics.
- **Rhaenyra's Grief & Rage** [2:38] — Rhaenyra mourns Jace, scolding his corpse before breaking down. She rages at her queensguard for locking her in her chambers, feeling powerless. This motivates her to claim the throne.
- **Rhaena at the Gates of the Veil** [4:43] — Rhaena arrives on Sheepstealer, seeking asylum. Lady Jeyne Arryn recognizes the danger (Damon killed Rhea Royce) and the threat of a wild dragon, so she permits Rhaena to stay but refuses a formal alliance.
- **Riverlands Feast & The Song 'Fish Feed'** [6:45] — Damon, Oscar Tully, and other lords celebrate at Harrenhal, singing 'fish feed'—a reference to the Lake Shore Battle where thousands died. The song highlights the brutality and dark humor of war.
- **Damon & Alys Rivers: Castle Bargain** [8:57] — Alys Rivers demands Harrenhal as payment for her help. Damon refuses, but Alys warns him not to return. She is established as a woods witch with ambition and long life, possibly manipulating events at Harrenhal.
- **Baela & Addam: Heroic Rescue** [10:46] — Baela and Addam search for Corlys. Addam spots Corlys's white hair on rocks, rescuing him. Corlys thanks Addam, making him an official Velaryon, saying 'I count that of more worth than a mountain of gold.'
- **Aegon II's Escape & Rook's Rest** [11:32] — Aegon II and Larys Strong are attacked by Triarchy survivors. Aegon fights back (remembering his child warrior days) and redirects to Rook's Rest, likely to reunite with Sunfyre.
- **Alicent's Secret Deal with the Goldcloaks** [12:52] — Alicent, in a bathhouse, meets Captain Luthar Largent of the Goldcloaks and orders him to open the city gates for Rhaenyra. This is a major departure from the book, making Alicent an active conspirator.
- **Damon's Confrontation & Alys's Manipulation** [14:15] — Damon confronts Hugh and Ulf about abandoning Harrenhal. They mention a witch in the woods. Damon realizes Alys Rivers manipulated him, potentially dooming his garrison to Vhagar's attack.
- **Damon & Mysaria: Tense Reunion** [15:31] — Demon and Mysaria argue. Damon mistrusts her, but they share a moment of understanding about Rhaenyra. Mysaria reaffirms her loyalty by handing Rhaenyra her father's crown.
- **Better Help Sponsor Break** [16:56] — A sponsor segment for BetterHelp, discussing the pressures of fatherhood and the value of therapy. This is an ad break, not narrative content.
- **Alicent's Return & Betrayal** [18:08] — Alicent returns to the Red Keep, evades her guards, but is betrayed to Sir Rickard. She is accused by Master of Laws Jasper Wylde, who makes inappropriate advances. This scene is criticized for gratuitous SA plot device.
- **Rhaenyra's War Council & Damon's Vision** [19:17] — Rhaenyra, grieving, accuses Sheepsteeler of being used by the Greens. Damon switches to High Valyrian to describe his weirwood vision of the future (white walkers, Daenerys, etc.), appealing to her sense of duty and destiny.
- **Damon's Prophecy & Rhaenyra's Decision** [20:42] — Damon describes the vision from season 2, including the white walkers and Daenerys, tying it to the larger 'song of ice and fire' prophecy. Rhaenyra resolves to take the throne.
- **Alicent's Escape & Attack** [21:45] — Alicent is nearly assaulted by Jasper Wylde (Iron Rod) but is rescued by Orwyle. The scene implies Wylde is a predator. Orwyle arrests Wylde. Rhaenyra sets out for King's Landing.
- **Rhaenyra's Flight & Helaena's Caterpillar** [23:32] — Rhaenyra, Daemon, and dragon seeds fly to King's Landing. Meanwhile, Helaena observes a caterpillar out of season in the godswood, which she notes could be a death omen (but she has survived such things).
- **Helaena's Butterfly Note & Prophecy** [24:40] — Helaena has a journal with a drawing of a butterfly from the isle of butterflies (N'th). The note says 'no other shade' and 'cause death to people around them while living, but so far I remain alive.' This foreshadows her possible death.
- **Alicent & Helaena's Dialogue** [26:01] — Alicent tries to convince Helaena to flee. Helaena expresses a desire to keep chickens. They confront with Sir Frederick on the battlements; Helaena asks not to harm any beasts.
- **The Sacking of King's Landing Begins** [26:08] — Rhaenyra's squadron arrives over the city. Panic spreads. Aemon and Vhagar attack Harrenhal, torching Damon's garrison. Aemon kills Lord Simon Strong and his grandsons but is wounded by Paxter Strong.
- **Rhaenyra Takes the Iron Throne** [28:30] — Rhaenyra walks through the Red Keep, accepts surrender of Green soldiers, and enters the throne room. She refuses to sit until she has blood, but Helaena's capture is reported. Daemon finds Otto Hightower in a dungeon (a gift from Larys). Rhaenyra executes Otto (with a messy beheading) and Daemon executes Jasper Wylde.
- **Rhaenyra Sits the Throne** [34:46] — Rhaenyra steps through Otto's blood, sits the Iron Throne awkwardly, showing physical pain. The throne seems to spurn her (a bad omen). Alicent and Helaena are brought before her; Rhaenyra struggles to maintain composure.
- **Spoiler Dungeon: Book Comparisons & Theories** [36:08] — The spoiler section discusses book lore: in *Fire and Blood*, the Iron Throne cuts Rhaenyra, foretelling her short reign. Theories on Alys Rivers wanting to marry into Targaryen bloodline to end dragon power. Helaena's death possibly by dragonfire (Dreamfyre). Addam and Baela's future marriage.

### Conclusion

The episode masterfully advances the plot towards the fall of King's Landing, focusing on Rhaenyra's grief and determination, while introducing new layers of magic (Alys Rivers, Helaena's visions) and dark political maneuvering (Alicent's secret deal, Daemon's prophecy). The throne itself becomes a character, rejecting its new claimant.

Emma Darcy does something subtle and
brilliant in the way Raya sits the Iron
Throne. But did you catch it? I'm Eric
Boss of the New Rockstars channel and
this is a breakdown of House of the
Dragon season 3 episode 2. Let's go
through this eventful episode scene by
scene to explain what's going on, the
details you missed, and for any theories
or spoilers for future plot events from
the book. We're going to save that for
the spoiler dungeon at the end of this
video. New Rockstars has some
interesting House of the Dragon themed
merch designs like this house crest
design. and grabbing one of these shirts
is the best way you can support what
we're doing here at New Rockstars. Okay,
the opening family tapestry animation
has been updated since last week to
include new embroideries reflecting the
events of the Battle of the Gullet. We
see the blue threads forming the waves
and then we see Corus Valarion and
Shurco Lohar dueling on the deck of the
sea snake with Shurocco defeated.
Interesting how the tapestry credits
Corus with this kill when it was really
his bastard son Alan Apo because as
we've seen before the tapestry shows the
historical record as recorded by outside
observers as a form of propaganda for
the family story. We also see Prince
Jiharis dead from the Miroshi arrows. No
sign of Vermax's corpse in this
tapestry, but hey, maybe the dragon is
embroidered on the underside of it. We
open this episode underwater like many
memorable shots of the Battle of the
Gullet from the season premiere. Except
now we begin beneath the hull of a
sunken ship, seeing a body that might
have been Jayce's corpse still floating,
but I don't think it is. We see dragons
overhead finish off the battle. A
flaming projectile followed by a plume
of dragonfire. Then a creepy long-haired
figure floats into view from the right.
I thought maybe this could be Shurako
Lohar's body. She did have long hair,
but notice how this corpse seems to be
wearing a sleeved jacket. and Shurco
fought her final fight with leather
bracers that fit tightly over her
knuckles. So, could this be a Merlin
spoken about in Ironborn Legend? Could
it be the aquatic race known as the Deep
Ones mentioned in the World of Ice and
Fire? Or could this be Alice Rivers
watching from the waters as she takes
stock of the fish feed in the marine
battle of the lake shore across the
God's Eye Lake from where she is? Q on
Vermathor, Ulf on Silver Wing, and Adam
on Sea Smoke now join an exhausted BA on
Moondancer as they sweep the Gullet,
torching any last remaining Triarchy
ships and sailors they can find. Smoke
from the fire they're all cooking up
makes visibility even harder. In the
Fire and Blood text, these other three
Dragon Seed riders were at the battle
from the beginning alongside Jason
Vermax and Nettles on Sheepsteeler. So
having these three come in at the end of
the battle does reconcile why historians
might remember all five of the Black
Dragons torching the Triarchy. Baya
tearfully rides Moon Dancer with Chase's
body under her arms. I was trying to
figure out the logistics of how she got
that body on her dragon. Like, did
someone swim out there and push Jace to
an overturned ship or a nearby rocky
shore where Moon Dancer could land and
then the body could be loaded on? Can
dragons do aquatic landings and takeoffs
like pelicans? Back at Dragonstone,
Jace's body is carried by the Valyrian
dragon tamers. It kind of looks like
they have some specific old Valyrian
ritual by which they handle the remains
of dragon riders who died in battle. Sir
Lawrence Marbrand steps up heartbroken
and knowing the seven hells he's in for
from the queen.
>> The battle
>> it is won.
>> Yes, we forget that despite the
heartbreaking loss of the crown prince
and his dragon, from a strategic
perspective, Rineer's forces
successfully repelled a naval assault on
the Gullet and wiped out the Green's
naval threat. And though this wasn't the
case in the book, they took out Master
of Ships Tailand Lannister. While last
episode he drowned in the Dragonstone
Pass, the book version of Thailand
Lannister is caught with his pants down
when they invade King's Landing and is
thrown to the torturers. so that they
could try to find the Lannister gold.
Reineer's first stage of grief is denial
as she addresses her son's corpse like a
child she's scolding.
>> What have you done?
>> She's taking the motherly tone that she
once took to reprimand him as an
8-year-old for airing in some kind of
way, but now she just breaks down in
tears.
>> How could you do this to me?
>> She blames Jace for leaving her behind
to mourn yet another son. Sir Lawrence
pulls her off of Jace and now she turns
on her queen's guard who barricaded her
in her chamber. Sir Lawrence admits his
failure and offers his sword to the
queen to behead him. Good thing Reara
doesn't go through with it in this
moment. Based on her aim later with Auto
High Tower, it would have taken a few
hacks. Rea rightfully rages at everyone
here because yes, her grounding did
amount to a temporary coup d'etat in
which everyone on Dragonstone with an
earshot was a conspirator. They are all
supporting a system in which this queen
does not have the full power over her
ranks that she should. And so in this
episode, that feeling of powerlessness
will lead Rineer, I think, to shed off
the throne of Dragonstone, to claim the
throne where her power and demands
cannot be ignored, where she will truly
be feared. Though, we should note that
one of the changes they made for the HBO
show is the fact that Reineer at this
point in history thinks she lost a
second son in the Battle of the Gullet,
when the ship that gay abandoned
carrying Aegon the Younger and Vizeris
headed to Pentos, also gets caught by
the Charish ships, and only Aegon the
Younger comes back on his dragon. She
thinks Viseris died or drowned and it's
the resolve of the second son dying that
historians believe lead her to next turn
to King's Landing. This episode takes a
different approach to how Reero works
through her grief to make her next
decision. Raina returns to the gates of
the veil to face Lady Jane Aaron. I like
how Sheep Stealer stays back kind of
with his head lowered like a dog that's
being punished. Lady Jane already knows
that Jace is dead. Seems like the
message carrying ravens beat Raina and
Sheepsteeler to the veil which is kind
of funny because it means that Sheep
Stealer made a few pit stops after
leaving the battle before taking Raina
here. probably saw a few sheep over in
the five fingers that he just had to
taste. Rea begs for asylum, but Jane
rejects her, please. Rea took a wild
dragon into battle and killed the crown
prince, meaning the full forces of Rea's
faction will come down on the veil at
some point. It's also possible that Lady
Jane could have her suspicions about how
things really ended between Damon and
Rya Royce in the veil in season 1.
Because remember, Rya's cousin Gerald
straight up accused Damon of murder at
Rea and Leanor's wedding in season 1. So
Jane probably does not want Damon and
Caraxis anywhere near the veil. Jane
reminds Raina that she was supposed to
be on a boat to Pintos with her half
brothers Agon the Younger and Viseris.
Ryan Condle did explain the missing gay
abandon ship at the battle of the Gullet
as a kind of complication of having two
young actors in a big dangerous water
set like this, but that the writers
still have not forgotten about these
princes and where they currently need to
be. Raina reminds Jane how the lady once
told her that she was deceived in her
dealings with the queen, referring to
their spat in season 2, episode 5 when
Jane was complaining that she gave
Raineira 15,000 men, but in exchange got
only two tiny dragons, referring to
Joffrey's dragon, Tyraxis and egg on the
younger's very small dragon, Stormcloud.
So now Rea offers Sheepsteeler as a
fully grown dragon to truly defend the
veil with Sheepsteeler in the background
hunched in a ready put me in coach
stance in this great three-point shot.
While Rea is offering this as a gift,
Lady Jane knows it's also in a way a
threat because Raina could right now
order Jakaris take the veil and send
everyone with the last name of Aaron or
Royce through the Moond door or into
Sheep Steeler's Underbite. So Jane has
to play it cool.
>> The veil is vast. I cannot stop a dragon
from abiding redes.
>> It was her ancestor Shara Aaron who bent
the knee to Aegon the Conqueror and more
specifically his sister wife Vzinia in
Vagar as we see in the opening tapestry
of every episode. So that's effectively
what Jane does to Raina and Sheep
Steeler here. Meanwhile, in the
Riverlands, Damon Targaryen, Oscar
Tully, Black Alley, Rodrik, Dustin, and
the Winterwolves, and all the other
Riverland lords and soldiers celebrate
with seafood and me with Jason
Lannister's head on a pike next to the
lion's head. They all sing a victory
song with a chorus chant of fish feed.
Sir Simon Strong arrives with his
grandsons from Harrenhal and drops the
exposition that they're all celebrating
victories from the Battle of the Red
Fork and the lake shore. Thus why
they're chanting fish feed, confirming
my thinking last week that they were
showing us the ending of the Battle of
the Red Fork. That is where Jason
Lannister dies. But they would be
bringing in the Winter Wolves a little
early, suggesting that we'd be in the
proximity of the Battle of the Lakes
Shore. It's kind of a bummer that we
won't get to see the Battle of the Lakes
Shore on the show. And Fire and Blood is
described as the bloodiest land battle
of this entire war. After losing Jason
Lannister, the Greens, now led by the
infirmed Lord Humphrey Leford, set up
their defenses on the western shore of
the God's Eye Lake behind a line of
pikes with the lake to their backs. At
this point in the text though, Aemon is
already at Harrenhal with Vaggar. The
combined blacks forces have to shoot
arrows at the Lannister raven that are
trying to send word across the lake to
Aean for help. And the blacks worried
that Vagar will come over to torch them
at some point, sending the winter wolves
five charges one after the other right
into the pikes, losing 2/3 of the winter
wolves numbers. And then from there, the
fighting goes into the reeds of the
lake. And when the Greens were defeated,
estimates range from 30,000 to 48,000
men died in a single battle. Since this
battle was conducted mostly in the reeds
of the lake, that's why it's called fish
feed by the participants of it. And it's
what they're singing about now. How they
fought them into the muddy shores and
the water got too thick with blood that
they could no longer see. They're
laughing. 48,000 men died and they're
laughing. I mean, hey, you got to laugh
and sing so you don't cry. But this
context and the lyrics of the song,
specifically sung by Oscar Tully, does
echo Oscar's need to return his fallen
rivermen to the mud. And it struck me
that they're now dining on seafood that
they probably caught in those same
waters as they're laughing about how
their enemies are now fished. And all of
these waters are flowing in and around
the god's eye lake where this series is
telling us very spooky [ __ ] is going
down on that aisle of faces with
prophetic woods witches and antlered
green men. Simon Strong with his
grandsons German and Paxter carry and
wine for the feast. And he also gives
Damon a raven missive that reports Jace
is dead and summons to join Reineer to
take King's Landing. Damon orders Dustin
to march the Winterwolf South and we'll
meet him there, which I think just tells
us that the winter wolves aren't the
ones that get torched in Harrenhal
later. You don't cast Tommy Flanigan
from Braveheart and Gladiator just to
kill him off that fast. Caraxis gulps up
some water from the shore of the God's
Eye. Maybe the exact reads where
thousands of corpses are still
submerged. Alice Rivers tells Damon,
>> "I've seen that your coming has been an
omen of the end."
>> Damon asks, "The end of what, and Alice
cryptically says, of many things and the
beginnings of others." Ooh, see you in
the spoiler dungeon for that. Alice
tells Damon that she did Rene a service
by helping Damon unite 40,000 men in the
Riverlands. As repayment, Alice just
wants the little old thing of Harrenhal.
>> I've lived there all my long life and
I've seen it given from hand to hand,
and yet none seem to cherish it.
>> Her long life. Yes, this HBO series
whole impetus for establishing Alice as
a woods witch just really comes from her
description of Fire and Blood as seeming
never to age. We cannot forget that this
whole series began at the great council
of 101 at Harrenhal. I kind of have a
feeling that we're going to learn that
Alice was present for that and who knows
might have even manipulated the vote.
Damon reminds Alice that she has no name
or title or husband and that the crown
doesn't give castles to midwives. But
when Damon proposes some other kind of
payment, Alice says,
>> "I ask for food and you offer me rubies
for all their worth. They will never
satisfy my hunger."
>> Hm. I get the sense that this witch
feeds off of Harrenhal and the magic of
its weirwood tree. the God's Eye and the
Aisle of Faces. Alice must know it's a
huge ask to expect one of the biggest
castles in Westeros to go to her, but
this witch has ambition. She wants to
raise her status in the realm. And I
think I have a really great theory about
this, but for further speculation on
this, I got to direct you to the spoiler
dungeon along with the deeper meaning of
what Alice says here when she storms off
shouting,
>> "Do not come back here. Remember I told
you." Now, we get this interesting scene
between Baya and Allan as they look for
Corass and compare their childhoods as a
high-born granddaughter of Corass versus
the lowborn bastard of Corus. It is
important that the show brings these two
characters together at this point given
the futures they both have in the text.
For now, I'll just say that it's
interesting that Bayless sees the world
through loyalty to one's spouse as in
Corless to Rainees. Whereas Allan sees
the world through the naval conquest
that the sea snake represented with his
sourced dragon water as Alan looks out
seawward as his life, his love and his
ladies is a sea. Allen's brother, Adam,
rides Sea Smoke and actually does spot
Corless's bright platinum hair
contrasting with the Dark Rocks. You
know, that might be a natural advantage
for white-haired Valyan bloodlooded
dragon riders over the ages. It's easier
to spot them and perform sea rescues
like this. Those poor dark-haired,
strong bastards Luke and Jace didn't
stand a chance. But then, in a twist of
events, the Stuntton capttors who were
escorting Aegon and Laris to Dragonstone
get attacked by surviving and invading
Triarchy soldiers. While we did not
expect Aegon to be much of a fighter or
in any condition to do anything
physical, we have to remember from the
this is a stuffed Lionel boy fights with
his nephews in the red keep courtyard in
season 1 episode 6. This jerk remembers
what a young fighter looks like when
he's scared to death and win to pounce
for the kill. So instead of to Dusk
andale, Aegon wants to go to Rook's rest
probably to reunite with the wounded
Sunfire who's still grounded there.
Corus says
>> this be victory. I hope I never see
another. This is the direct quote that
Corus is credited by historians with
saying after the battle of the Gullet in
Fire and Blood. In the distance, you can
see High Tide burning. Yes, he did lose
his entire treasure vault there. And the
port of Spice Town was completely
destroyed and never rebuilt in history
thereafter. In the aftermath of Fire and
Blood, it is said that Adam on Sea Smoke
did not join the other dragon seeds to
celebrate at Dragonstone. He instead
went to Corus. And it's not known what
they talked about. I don't think Adam
says anything in this episode, so we
still don't really know what they talked
about. But in this scene, it's really
Corus with his daughter and his two
sons. Almost all of his actually blooded
descendants except for horse girl Raina
in the veil as he honors Allan by making
him an official Valyrian.
>> I count that of more worth than a
mountain of gold. This line is an
interesting parallel to Alice Rivers
considering treasures like rubies
worthless. Allison sees Aemon flying
Vaggar north of the dragon pit on top of
Rainees's hill and she breathes the sigh
of relief. Then she goes into the
Goldcloak's bath house where a bunch of
guys are hanging dong to talk to the
goldcloak's captain Luther Larent. He
was a goldc cloak during the time when
Damon Targaryen was captain of the city
watch in season 1 and now he's the
captain appointed to this position by
Otto High Totower in the past. Allison
warns Larent that Reineer is coming and
to open the city gates to her forces
when they arrive. We kind of have to
accept that everything with Allison at
this point on the HBO series is just a
major departure from the text. In Fire
and Blood, Allison never made this back
rooms deal with Reineer, and she
actually fought to fortify the Red Keep
when Reira approaches. In the text, it's
actually Larent himself, who just
decides to turn the gold cloaks in favor
of the blacks out of loyalty to Damon,
even killing his number two, Gwane High
Totower, who in the HBO series is, of
course, shifted to be with Kristen Cole
in the Riverlands. So, why does Allison
hold this meeting in the bath house?
Well, because this is an HBO show and we
need Dong. But really, she probably
doesn't want her visit to be seen as
official business since she's basically
asking him to commit treason against all
of the Greens, dooming a lot of the
castle guard. She's also probably hoping
to catch him in this vulnerable moment
when he can be honest and not have to
put on heirs in front of any other
lieutenants around him. But though it's
not stated in this episode, I'm assuming
one of these nude dudes was the one who
snitched on her to Master of Laws Jasper
Wild, who probably also made some
assumptions about her for the sorted
detail of her being in the presence of
these unclothed men. Back on
Dragonstone, we see the long necked
Caraxis doing a lap around the island.
Demon finds Hugh and Ol. And Ol kind of
goes in for a hug that Demon rejects. He
grills the two of them for abandoning
their post at Harrenhal. And I love how
Ol pulls the guilty kid move. Adam left,
too.
>> Yeah, Adam left, too. Go yell at him.
But now just finally shares what scared
him.
>> There's something wrong in those woods,
though. I'm telling you. Heard all kinds
of sounds like voices. I'll sort of
>> now while he was about to say which as
Hugh soon gets to I wonder if he was
about to say I saw a furry dude with
antlers but I don't know if it was Ul
who saw that or just Adam and Hugh but
Damon also saw that green man at the end
of season 2 but Hugh confirms that a
woman was there with news of the battle
that he thought must have been a maester
but was actually a witch. So now in this
moment Damon knows that the woman I just
pissed off is also spooking these other
three dragon riders with some
supernatural scaries. He's getting a
sense that there are higher powers than
he is at play. Specifically since he
left his garrison at Harrenhal after the
fish feed singing. He is feeling like he
might have gotten played by Alice Rivers
to doom Damon's garrison without any
dragon protection for when Vagar
arrives. It was Alice who told them to
leave without Damon knowing that she
told them that. She did not bring it up
with him lakeside when they talked.
Damon runs into Misaria and kind of
takes out his anger at being played out
on her. He remembers that the last time
they saw each other, she was behind
bars. Because remember, these two
characters started together in the aisle
of silk in season 1. And throughout the
first season, Misaria proved to be the
spy master, the white worm, who plotted
to have the drunken prince Aegon
kidnapped. And she ended up tustling
with Otto High Tower. And then at the
end of the season, she had her mans
burned down by an agent of Laris Strong.
So in season 2, fleeing King's Landing,
her ship was caught by the Valarians in
the Gullet, and she was taken prisoner
on Dragonstone, where Damon accused her
of serving the Greens. And to get her
freedom, she felt like she had to give
Damon the name of her blood and cheese
conspirators. And then after the
assassination of the young prince, Damon
just took off and went to Harrenhal,
leaving her still behind bars. So Reara
had to choose to honor Damon's promise
to release Misaria. Mizaria further
gained Reara's trust by warning the
Dragonstone guard about Aric coming to
assassinate Reara. So after that, the
two women ended up very close as
Mazzaria is kind of moving her way into
becoming mistress of whisperers on Rea's
small council. Now Damon just mistrust
Mazaria as the other bed fellow to his
wife threatening to get closer to Reara
than he is an adviser who actually
respected Reineer's needs and wants
before Damon figured out he needed to do
that. But then there's this interesting
turn in the scene when the two of them
sit next to each other and share their
common angst as someone who might know
Raineer even better than both of them.
Allison Misaria is frustrated that she
wasn't in that season 2 finale meeting
and kind of echoes the frustrations of
book readers that there might be some
weird connection between these two women
from their time as girls that no one can
understand. June is men's mental health
awareness month. Father's Day is coming
up and that can invite a lot of
overwhelming feelings. Positive ones
like pride, love, and gratitude, but
also negative ones like guilt or feeling
like you're not doing enough. That can
be a lot to deal with on your own. But
today's sponsor, Better Help, makes it
easy to have somebody with you who's
trained to listen and help. My therapist
has told me that the highs of parenting
are so high, but the lows can be really
low, too. The important thing to
remember is that all fathers make
mistakes. And while it's definitely good
to try to avoid mistakes, when one
happens, your energy is better spent on

Red Keep and gets immediately scolded by
Sir Rickard Thorne for slipping his
detail. She seeks the captain of the
castle guard, Sir Saurin, and refuses to
let Rickard summon him for her because
she knows these honorable brothers of
the king's guard are going to be sworn
to snitch. Sure enough, offscreen, it's
implied that Rickard did snitch over to
Sir Saurin. Allison really proves
correct Demon's description of her as a
conspirator by so brazantly screwing
over all of these green loyalists. I
know she feels like she's lost control
over her sons and their dragons and it's
going to ultimately spell doom for her
and her daughter and granddaughter, but
the HBO series decision to have Allison
herself as the one sneaking around
basically unlocking all the doors and
dismantling the defenses is just a bit
hard to buy. Like as opposed to this
subtrafuge that we see, I would have
been interested to see the city forces
like the gold cloak start to break rank
on their own when they see Ra's forces
arriving and Allison could just kind of
push things more in that direction and
then ride that wave of panic as she
tries to escape. But it's really another
example of what the show does by trying
to make Allison a more active character
at this point of history than she is in
George R. Martin's text. They force the
character into some outlandish behavior
that really asks the audience to accept
some unrealistic responses from the
characters who serve her. Ray in her
grief suggests to Damon that sheepaler
had somehow been mounted by the Greens
forces and that it was the Greens who
deliberately set this trap to draw Jace
to his death. I guess Baya didn't see
her sister Raina on Sheepstaler's back.
Or maybe to spare her sister, Baya
didn't tell Rara that part of it. But I
suppose this is another reason why the
writers replaced Nettles with Raina and
created this new arc with Rea being the
one on Sheepsteeler. Maybe they felt
they needed to create this confusion and
dramatic irony where Reara thought
Allison went back on her word and sent
another dragon controlled by the Greens
into the gullet leading to Jayce's
death. It seems like the writers did
this to justify Reineer being as
bloodthirsty as she is when she gets to
King's Landing. And maybe the writers
felt that they couldn't make the green
aligned dragon in the gullet be Vagar or
Tisarion or Dreamfire or Sunfire as all
those dragons are just in other places
or indisposed. So I guess to get that
chaotic force of Sheepsteeler, it had to
be an accidental rampage with Raina at
the helm in order to preserve Allison's
innocence from that event. When Damon
tells Rea that Vagar has left King's
Landing, at first this grieving mother
doesn't even want the now undefended
Iron Throne, equating the swords that
made that throne as part of the
bloodshed that claimed the lives of the
sons who clung to her skirts. But now
Damon switches to high Valyrian, the
language these two characters only speak
in when they really want to connect with
each other so that no one else will be
able to hear or understand. He confesses
to her the vision that he saw at
Harrenhal.
>> He's describing what he saw in the
Weirwood Tree Vision in the season 2
finale, including a white walker and
their future descendant of Daenerys,
daughter of the mad king Aerys II in the
red waist with the dragon hatchlings.
He's basically saying, "I saw it,
Rainineer. I saw the massive
monocultural HBO series that our lives
are the prequel to. There's going to be
watch parties and bars, random Ed
Sheeran cameos, and millennials adopting
huskys in climates that are too warm for
them." Now, interesting that Damon does
not mention seeing blood raven because I
guess to Damon, he'd be like, "Who the
[ __ ] is that guy?" But it's also
interesting that the future he witnessed
skipped over the full history where
dragons would go mostly extinct because
in Fire and Blood, Rea does not end up
with Sheep Staler Nettles, but instead
Rea ends up with the pink she of
Mourning. And Mourning is one of the
last known dragon hatchlings at this
point in history until the never named
last dragon in George R. Martin's lore,
who was deformed and ended up dying in
153 AC. is really appealing to Reineer
in the language of their dreamer
ancestors to instill in her the faith
powered mission that her father
activated in her in the pilot episode.
Basically, if vengeance won't work to
get Reara out of bed, a sense of duty
and destiny might. Master of Laws Lord
Jesper Wild catches Allison packing in
her chambers. He says he remembers her
as a young girl snaking into the halls
of power and accuses Allison of finding
enjoyment with Sir Christristen Cole.
Now, later, Allison says Sir Rickard was
the one who betrayed her. And I think
the detail about Sir Kristen Cole is
something that Sir Rickard knew about,
so that's why she said it. But I think
the gossip of Allison going to make this
secret deal with the Goldcolaks could
have been snitched by any other
Goldcolaks in that bath house. Or also,
we got to remember there are spies all
over the streets of King's Landing that
snitched to each other to get paid.
Also, I think it was Sir Rickard who did
go talk to Sir Saurin, and that's why
Sir Saurin did not initially come into
the room when Allison started screaming.
Not until Orwhile went in the room. So,
in an affront to any Fire and Blood
reading Iron Rod fanatics out there,
turns out Iron Rod is a moniker for
being a violent predator who assaults
women. And based on what he said about
noticing Allison when she was young,
potentially he's on the Epstein list,
too. Now, to be clear, in the book, the
name Iron Rod really comes from Jasper
Wild being unbendable in matters of law.
But Mushroom does say that he sired 29
kids and his last wife died from sex
exhaustion. To be honest with you, dear
viewer, I did not like this scene. I
honestly never like it when these HBO A
Song of Ice and Fire shows add essay as
a plot point when it was not there in
George R. Martin's text. And honestly, I
think this was really added by the
writers to suggest that Allison met some
resistance while she was trying to sneak
out of King's Landing and leave the
doors open for Reneer. I just don't
really like the narrative's implication
that Allison had this coming in any way.
Even if the episode ultimately punishes
Jasper Wild, Orurh Wild does eventually
burst in and Lord Jasper seems to think
that saving Our Wild from Aean beheading
him last episode might keep Orhile loyal
to him in this moment. But Orurow
defends Allison and orders Jasper
arrested. Rea ignores the caution of
Bartamos Celtic and Grandmaster Gerardis
and sets out for King's Landing. And she
also says,
>> "Let Sir Lauren choose how he will die."
>> So much for her refusal of his life
forfeiture. We don't really see how Sir
Lawrence does it in this episode, but he
doesn't die this way in Fire and Blood
because of course it was the HBO series
invention to have Sir Lawrence lock Rain
in a room to begin with. I wonder how
Sir Lawrence's going to react to hearing
this from Keltar or Gerardis. Is he
going to be like, "Yeah, okay, but how
did she say it?" Mizaria hands Rea the
crown of her father, Vizeris,
>> remember which one of us has been
faithful.
>> Mizaria doesn't want Demon or anyone
else ousting her from her position of
trust that she's earned here at
Dragonstone. But these words will also
be something Rara thinks about in the
context of Allison. When Reara gets to
King's Landing, she's going to initially
see that Allison was faithful. Well,
somewhat. Damon checks in with Ul and
Hugh, who are now dressed in the red and
black riding leathers and cloaks, with
Ulf wearing the three-headed dragon
clasp, which I assume is part of the
pageantry and theatrics of making these
dragon seeds appear from the ground to
be part of the ranks of Reineer's black
faction. Specifically, the way Damon
just presses Ul's forehead. In the words
of the Telltale games, "Ol will remember
this." Cirax, Caraxis, Vermathor, and
Silverwing depart Dragonstone with their
riders soaring over the broken ships of
the Gullet. Another reminder of what
Gerardis said. These four are flying
into King's Landing without any Valaran
backup. Helena is back to her buggirl
roots, noticing a caterpillar in the Red
Keep Godswood. Remember, this is the
same garden where Allison and Reineer
used to spend their time, where Allison
stops Sir Kristen from ending his life.
Helena says, "It isn't the season for
this caterpillar to be crawling on this
leaf." We see a nature book that Helena
was either reading or perhaps a journal
that she's keeping with her with her own
drawing of a butterfly. The inscription
reads of Nath something something no
other shade. The lines are distinct as
if drawn with a quill. They are said to
cause death to people around them while
living, but so far I remain alive.
Nth is known as the Isisle of
Butterflies. It's an island in the
summer sea off the northwestern coast of
the southern continent of this world,
Sos. Remember in the later era,
Daenerys's adviser, Miss Mande, is from
Nth. Helena is a Targaryen dreamer who
often devised cryptic prophecies from
the insects and arachnids that she would
fiddle with. I think she's surprised to
find the caterpillar that will molt into
the yrium of Nth butterfly already
active earlier than she expected, which
could foreshadow death, which is true.
We already start to see heads of the
greens rolling this episode, starting
with Helena's grandfather, Otto. Though,
notice how Helena's notes say she has
been around these butterflies before and
she is still alive. Helena and Alice
Rivers are the two most interesting
characters to theorize about. So, we're
going to talk about this more in a
spoiler dungeon. Allison tries to assure
Helena that fleeing is the right move
and that she just wants her to be happy
like she was before becoming queen. And
Helena says this,
>> "I think I might like to keep chickens.
>> God bless this sweet, sweet bug girl who
loves her chickens." Allison tells Sir
Frederick on the battleman to stand down
by the order of the queen. And Helena
dutifully says,
>> "I will not have any beast harmed." And
then as Allison scares Sir Frederick
about Reineer coming with Dragonfire,
Helena speaks up trying to take the good
cop approach.
>> Her sons were always kind.
>> Helena is recalling when Jace danced
with her on Drift Mark in season 1
episode 8. Now we don't know if this
moment if Helena knows that Jace is
dead, but for Helena, she always held
the niceness of Jace of Luke and Joffrey
when they were all in the Red Keep
together compared to her own freaky
brothers. That that goodness must have
reflected on the kind motherly qualities
of Reineer. Lord Hand Kristen Cole and
Gwane High Tower see Vaggar and Aean to
fly overhead and charge to Harrenhal. We
see bats swarming out of Harrenhal as
Vagar looms in the fog of her head. I
mean maybe Alice Rivers is just a goth
girl who wants a big bat castle. The
garrison that Damon ordered to occupy
Harrenhal gets torched. We don't know if
Oscar Tully is with them though. I think
for a character that big they would have
shown his death. The kaiju sized dragon
of Vaggar topples pillars with his
massive bulk and sprays these Tully men
with fire while Aean just cuts through
all of them alone without much effort.
It's pretty interesting that this
episode shows two sequences of these
dragons taking the two largest castles
of Westeros without much resistance. But
that is in a sense how it goes down in
Fire and Blood. It's all kind of like a
silly game of chess and out thinking and
outmaneuvering the dragons on the other
side. I mean really Aean is following
the same path Damon did in season 2. He
even bursts into the same room finding
Lord Simon Strong and his grandsons
German and Paxter dining just as Damon
found them. Aemon wants to duel the
elderly Lord Simon, who tries to bend
the knee the way he did to Damon, but
the young prince won't accept it. He's
less patient and he stabs the old lord.
Now German shouts father. Even though
I'm pretty sure these two guys are his
grandsons, but German dies too, but
Paxter, good old Paxter, lunges in with
a steak knife behind Demon and stabs him
through his armor right in the kidney.
Now, according to Fire and Blood, these
killings do mark the unceremonious end
of House Strong, an ancient house
descended from the first men. But in the
show continuity, Lord Lar Strong remains
alive and Alice Rivers is technically
the bastard daughter of Lord Lionol
Strong or at least they think she is.
And of course, Prince Joffrey is a
strong bastard, son of Harwin Strong. So
the bloodline does live on. It's just
the Riverland house now historically is
done. Alice Rivers approaches Aean just
as she did to Damon. But bleeding from
the wound from Paxter, he crawls to her
feet to help. He's not dead, but she's
in control right now. The rest of the
episode is spent at King's Landing, the
sacking of King's Landing. We're already
here. It's happening. Rineer squadron
flies toward the city from the
Blackwater Bay. Sir Frederick does stand
down from a scorpion and a second of
command removes his helmet. Notice how
this guy is heterocchromia. Maybe it's
just an interesting casting choice. Then
there's some panic in the streets of
King's Landing and Fire and Blood.
There's way more panic. There's looting.
There's rioting. There's people fleeing
the city for the hills. There's people
who just start burrowing underneath
their homes hoping to escape the fire.
Tunnels that fire in blood nodes are
still there in future generations. We
see Hugh Hammer's wife, Cat. The dragon
she sees is Vermathor. and she sees the
back of it where Hugh would be riding.
This would be the first she has seen her
husband since he left. It's not like he
could send word with a raven as to where
he would be flying with his super
important dragon. While Silverwing flew
over King's Landing in season 2 as a
show of force by Raineer to Aeand in the
Greens, none of these people have seen
the bronze fury Vermathor in their
lifetimes because remember in season 1
he was still hauled away in a dragon
cave. So it must be terrifying to see a
dragon that's nearly as big as Vagar,
but one that is clearly a different
color in the sunlight flying overhead.
As Caraxis lands outside the gates, we
literally see green cloak soldiers
throwing open the gates for them. And
when Rara lands on Cyrax, they all offer
their swords and bend the knee. It is
pretty wild to see Damon and Rara by
themselves working their way through the
red keep before waiting for the gold
cloaks to help them take the castle like
they do in Fire and Blood. They get all
the way into the throne room, which in
fairness to the loyalist Greens might
have been a deliberate defense strategy
to lure these enemies into the thing
that they would be going after the most
and then try to kill them there at the
feet of the throne. Because the iron
throne is like basically a series of
pikes. It's a brier patch of swords that
was designed that way in part to make
anyone who would try to climb over
themselves to take this musical chair
style would die on that climb. Sir
Rickard leads Green soldiers to defend
the throne from Rara and Damon. Damon
asks where Aegon is. Is the upstart pup
too craven to face his queen?
>> Upstart tart is some incredible word
play. Raineira draws her sword getting
last from Sir Rickard and the gold
cloaks led by Sir Luther Larent rush in
>> Sir Luther. The city watch remembers our
commander Damon Targaryen.
>> I like to think this all might have
hinged on just Damon remembering the
name and face of this gold cloak that he
once served with. Similar to Ned Stark
trying to confront Cersei in this same
room decades in the future from now just
to find Littlefinger betraying him with
the gold cloaks. The ultimate control
over the Iron Throne really does just
come down to who has control over the
city watch. Many of the green soldiers
drop their swords, but the honorable Sir
Rickard refuses to surrender. Rea
initially refuses to sit the throne
until she can get blood, the blood of
Aegon the usurper, but Orhwhile reports
to Damon that Aegon has fled as has
Allison. We see Allison and Helena
fleeing with Princess Jiara through the
streets. Though some women recognize
them, probably some women in attendance
of that funeral procession where their
carriage got stuck. These are probably
part of the same spy network that
snitched on Allison to Sir Rickard and
Jasper Wild. We see Damon going down to
the dungeon to free the political
prisoners always loyal to Rea down there
and taunt Jasper Wild, the replacement
offered by Orw. But then this other
dungeon keeper says,
>> "A gift from Lord Laris Strong."
>> Inside the cell is Auto High Tower. Now,
remember we saw Otto leave King's
Landing in season 2, episode 2 after
Aegon removed him as hand of the king.
He had told Allison that he was planning
on going back to Oldtown to mentor his
grandson, Darren. But then in the season
2 finale, we randomly saw him in a cell
somewhere. So now it's confirmed he's in
the Red Keep dungeon, captured by some
agent of Lord Laris strong, probably the
same network that burned Misaria's
house. Why did Lary keep Ottoa prisoner
all this time? I assume Allison didn't
even know her father was down here. I
assume we'll get this question answered
in a future episode, but it is very
confusing and I don't really have an
answer for it other than we had to rush
the writing of season 2 and couldn't do
rewrites cuz we shot it during a strike.
Back in the throne room, Lord
Merryweather and Lady Fel are presented
to Reineer. Remember back in season 1,
episode 9, these two were lords who were
living in the Red Keep who refused to
swear to Aegon II as that would break
their oath to Vizeris the first and
Reara and Otto had them escorted out.
Now we know where they were all this
time. In the Fire and Blood text, they
were actually beheaded for refusing.
They appear to be the same actors here,
just looking more haggarded. Jasper Wild
is dragged before Raineira, followed by
Lord Otto High Totower.
>> I assume everyone else is dead.
>> Otto has been so isolated, he assumes
that King Aegon, Aemon, Allison, Helena,
even young Jihara have all been killed
before they got to him. But he hears
Damon whisper that Aegon has actually
fled. And Reese Eiffens, what an amazing
actor that I will miss on this show. The
way he drops his head in disappointment,
almost like he wanted it to all be over
for his shitty grandsons. And now Otto
knows that it's going to be him who gets
scapegoed. In the dying of dragons
chapter in Fire and Blood, it is stated
that Otto High Tower is the first to be
executed, followed by Iron Rod. But it
doesn't say that Rara is the one to
behead Otto. And Otto and Iron Rod were
not previously imprisoned by the Green's
own forces in these dungeons at the time
of the sacking. In this scene, Damon
tells Rea it needs to be her who does
it. Otto requests Damon to spare him
from being hacked at, and Otto says,
>> "If your father could see what it's come
to, he would never have imagined it.
>> Speak no more."
>> Yeah. Truly, this was the fruit of
Otto's own manipulations at the end of
season 1. Otto turns back to look at Rea
one last time and then leans his head
forward to show the bare flesh on the
back of his neck. The same kind of
target that we saw on the back of Edard
Stark's neck in the Bor episode. As Rea
brings the sword down, Otto starts to
say,
>> "I did my best."
>> He was saying, "I did my best." He was
going to try to say that he did his best
to serve the realm in House Targaryen,
but Reineer's miss leaves him with this
undignified end. She missed by a mile,
fully wedging the sword in Otto's upper
back. So Otto's real final moments alive
are in tremendous pain, gasping for
breath. It's similar to Theon Greyjoyy's
failed execution of the Winterfell
Master at-arms Rodrik Cassell in Game of
Thrones season 2 episode 6. But with the
second swing, Reara lobs Otto's head
clean off. She is using Demon's Valyrian
steel sword to Dark Sister, which was
first carried by Vizenia, sister wife to
egg on the Conqueror. Within seconds,
Damon takes Dark Sister and swings for
Jasper Wild, who begins to say to tell
his lady wife whatever she hears and
slice. So, confirmed Iron Rod was
married. I just think he doesn't want
his wife hearing about what he did to
Allison in his final hours. The violin
strings in the sequence are haunting. We
go from a light motif of the High Tower
green theme from season 1 upon seeing
Otto again to just these dramatic cries
kind of set the rhythm of a heartbeat.
stepping through the blood of Otto, her
father's council, who is most
responsible for denying her ascension,
Reineer steps toward the Iron Throne,
leaving a trail of bloody bootprints.
Now, Emma Darcy here does an amazing job
of seizing their body with a sense of
shock, but then showing how Rene is able
to collect herself and takes the walk up
to the throne. We see her literally
reflected in the puddle of Otto's blood.
Reara sits the throne with this awkward
angle to keep her holstered sword from
getting tangled in the swords of the
throne itself. For a moment, she shows a
bit of relief, but then Allison and
Helena are walked in in front of her,
and notice how Rene now shifts awkwardly
in her chair, as if one of the swords
might have cut her. Allison looks down
at her beheaded father, Otto, probably
not knowing that he had been imprisoned
by Laris and handed over to Damon and
Reara that way. Probably assuming that
Reara just found him as a prisoner of
war first and did this to him. Once
again, confusion leads these two women
to assume the worst about each other.
Allison looks up at Rea with a look of
betrayal and fear. Raineira tears on her
face knowing that the entire court is
watching her for any sign of weakness.
Struggles to maintain composure,
tightening her face while her eyes
express a perfect mix of regret, anger,
grief, and pain as she sits this iron
throne. Yes, emotional pain and physical
pain. I imagine she feels like her dead
son Jace with another queen coming into
the room to ask, "What have you done?"
But on that note of pain, we right now
have to go into the spoiler dungeon
here. You're welcome to stop watching if
you don't want to know what comes next
from the book or have anything from
these upcoming episodes accidentally
spoiled to you. In Fire and Blood, this
chapter ends with a specific account
from Septan Eustace, who said that Rene
sat the Iron Throne all night as
everyone in the Red Keep was brought
before her to kneel and plead for
forgiveness and swear. Eustace also
notes that cuts were visible on Rea's
legs and palm, and drops of her blood
fell to the floor as she walked past,
and wise men looked at one another,
though none dared to speak the truth
aloud. The Iron Throne has spurned her
and her days upon it would be few. I
think this episode was trying to convey
that with the blood on the floor left by
Reineer's bootprints from Otto's blood.
Also, the way Rineer awkwardly sits on
the throne, the way she jumps, the way
she conveys this physical pain on her
face. I just won't be surprised if
episode 3 begins with her standing up
and we discover cuts on her body just as
her father Vizeris was pricricked by the
throne when he sat upon it. This is the
curse of the Iron Throne. If it cuts the
leader when they sit on it, the throne
is spurning them. And of course, book
readers know that Reero will not be a
long-term monarch. While she scores her
vengeance on the Greens here, it won't
be long until it all comes to an end in
season 4. But let's talk about Damon and
Alice Rivers. The omen Alice mentioned,
I think referred to the end of Damon's
selfish ambitions in the beginning of
Rineer's true reign, but also the
beginning of the end of the civil war.
Why does Alice want Harrenhal? Well, I
think now that she's tending to Aean's
health and recovery, her goal is to
marry into the Targaryen bloodline and
be Lady of Harrenhal, producing an heir
with Aemon. Like, if she couldn't do it
with Damon, she's going to do it with
Aean. And I think Alice's ultimate goal
is to bring an end to the madness of
Targaryen dragon power in Westeros by
restoring things to the natural balance
of the old gods in this continent. I
think she's going to work all sides to
try to make both Targaryen factions wipe
each other out, and then their heirs
will be left without dragons. Like we
could find out that the manipulations of
Alice Rivers and the old gods is what
leads to House Targaryen to end up being
dragonless. The diminished status that
they have in Night of the Seven
Kingdoms. The sighting of Blood Raven
and the vision that Alice showed Damon
at the end of season 2. Blood Raven is a
character alive during Duncan Egg's era.
I think that's going to be continuing
that old godpowered agenda. Alice's
warning to Damon to never return here
reminds us of her warning in season 2
that Damon will die in this place.
Indeed, he will at the battle of the
God's Eye Lake. Seeing Caraxis lap up
that water from that same lake as that
water rained down over Damon and Alice.
I think that shot was definitely setting
that up. The Allen and Bais scenes. Yes,
setting up the marriage that these two
will eventually have. Looks like these
two final seasons are going to make some
time for that subplot. That's fun to
see. And let's end the speculation with
Helena Bug girl. This yrium of Nth
butterfly inscription is awesome. I
think it's a potent of Helena's own
death. Now, I'm not excited for this,
but last week's coming up on this season
trailer included a shot of Helena seen
from above looking like she's seconds
away from being torched by dragon fire,
making me worried that Helena is going
to go over to the dragon pit and get her
dragon dream fire to do this to her,
ending her life the same way Lena did
with Vaggar. I really don't want that to
be how she goes out, but that might be
what these writers are doing. Comment
