## Summary

This video explores the production process behind creating an authentic live-action adaptation of the Ace Combat game, focusing on the use of a real F-18 cockpit and LED wall technology. The makers aimed to balance game fidelity with accessibility for casual viewers, resulting in a highly immersive and realistic pilot experience.

### Key Points

- **The Fighter Pilot Dream** [00:00] — The video opens with an intense combat scene, capturing the universal childhood fantasy of being a fighter pilot. The speaker expresses increased respect for real pilots, noting the cockpit is a 'work seat,' not a luxury one.
- **Authenticity is Key** [00:25] — To stay true to the game, the production sourced a real F-18 cockpit. This highlights the principle that for a faithful adaptation, you cannot 'guess' on the look and feel of the environment.
- **Attention to Authentic Details** [00:56] — The team focused on realistic ground-air communication and military terminology, like 'bingo' (fuel state) and 'left seat, right seat' (information passing), to ensure the actors' performances align with real military doctrine.
- **Balancing Fan Service and Approachability** [01:34] — The production incorporated elements that are germane to the game but also made sense to a casual viewer who's never played it, suggesting the challenge of adapting niche content for a broader audience.
- **Fan Inside a Professional** [01:46] — The speaker, a lifelong Ace Combat fan, shares his experience of staying professional on set while internally 'freaking out,' illustrating the unique perspective of a creator working on a beloved IP.
- **In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX)** [02:02] — The production used iCVFX with an LED wall, offering a resolution similar to the Vegas Sphere. This allows the background to change perspective and lighting in real-time, providing a more interactive environment for actors.
- **Better Than Green Screen** [02:28] — Actors perform against the LED wall's changing visuals instead of a green screen, which is described as 'way more interactive.' This method lets them react to something tangible, improving the performance.

## Transcript

Come in plane one. Spoke in the air, spoke in the air, four o'clock. Three more bandits on your six. Lane, brief right, brief right. Where the hell did these new guys come from? No, no, no! No! I've always wanted to be a fighter pilot.
I don't know any young boy that didn't dream of that. My respect goes up for pilots even more, because that is not a luxury seat. That is a work seat.
In the live action series, In the live action series, you want to see what it really looks like. You want to stay true to the game. You can't guess on some of this stuff. It won't fly with some of the things.
So we were able to source a real cockpit of an F-18 plane, which was fantastic. When you're working on a project like this, you want to be true to its history. So it's kind of taking all these ideas from the game and then creating these real people.
It's pretty amazing to be in an F-18 cockpit in the full gear. I just became cooler. So to make this particular one the most authentic, to have the actors get a sense of realism,
the ground-air communication, the communication between the aircrew, pilots. Bingo is like out of the field. Passing the information on to the pilots is a lot of what we call left seat, right seat.
And I ensure that they are all in line with current military doctrine Pitching in Not so much with the body Pitching in We also needed to incorporate a lot of elements that are germane to the game
but also made sense to a casual viewer that might not have ever played the game. We don't know the Endurance's whereabouts, so before more Satoans show up, we have to find the Majestic. She's the only carrier we can land on.
This is a rare scenario where I've been a major Ace Combat fan for the majority of my life. I always lose it. I keep it professional, but on the inside, I freak out a little bit. What we're using for this shoot is its iCVFX, or in-camera visual effects.
If the production uses an LED wall and changes perspective or does video playback, then that is the turn that you will hear. We have a resolution that is the same as the Vegas Sphere. The cameras were going to be projected around the cockpit,
and that doing Unreal Engine renders, manipulating the images by moving them around, rotating them, changing the colors, the lighting intensity. And action. They're not acting on a green screen. It's great that you're able to work off something
instead of imagining that you've got something behind you. You can't see it. You don't know what it is. It's way more interactive that way. Smoke in the air, 11 o'clock, Fox 2, Bandit on Plane 2. Cut. Moving on.
Badass. you
