[0:00] my longrange model 3 has hit 50,000 [0:03] miles in a little over 2 years I'm going [0:05] to go through all the costs which [0:07] include charging maintenance and [0:09] insurance and compared them to what an [0:11] average gas car would have cost me over [0:13] those miles I did a whole 50,000 Mi [0:15] review which included cost and a bunch [0:17] of other things that's on my channel but [0:19] in this video I'm just talking about the [0:21] costs so let's go ahead and talk about [0:23] my main expense first which has been [0:25] charging and technically I'm just a hair [0:27] over 52,000 Mi you can see my total [0:30] spent charging over the life of my car [0:33] in 2022 was [0:35] $689 in 2023 was [0:38] $1,679 and in 2024 so far it's been [0:42] $472 and that all adds up to a total [0:45] charging cost of [0:47] $2,840 and the app is pretty cool [0:49] because it actually shows you how much [0:51] you spent at home versus at [0:53] superchargers so at home over that time [0:55] in 2022 I spent [0:58] $276 in 202 three I spent $718 and so [1:02] far in 2024 at home I spent $341 for a [1:07] total at home charging cost of [1:10] $1,335 and on the other hand [1:12] supercharging in 2022 I spent $413 and [1:15] 2023 I spent $961 and so far in 2024 I [1:20] spent $131 for a grand supercharging [1:23] cost total of [1:26] $1,505 which I actually found kind of [1:28] interesting because we charge at home [1:30] pretty much all the time except when we [1:32] go on road trips which kind of makes [1:34] sense because on road trips although [1:36] we're only gone for a weekend or a week [1:38] or two at most we do rack up a lot of [1:41] miles and superchargers are quite a bit [1:43] more expensive than at home charging so [1:46] just keep in mind if you're somebody who [1:47] doesn't road trip as much as we do your [1:50] cost for charging can be a lot less than [1:52] what ours is but anyways [1:54] $2,840 to go a little over 52,000 Mi may [1:58] or may not sound like a lot so let's see [2:01] what it would have cost us if we were in [2:02] a gas car and what's cool about the [2:04] Tesla app is that when calculating these [2:06] savings it takes into account the [2:08] average gas prices in your state and I [2:11] think gas is a little more expensive [2:13] here in Nevada so anyways 2022 like I [2:15] said I spent $689 charging gas would [2:19] have cost me [2:21] $1,771 so I saved a total of [2:24] $1,082 that year in 2023 I spent $1,679 [2:29] gas would have cost me [2:31] $4,240 so that year I saved [2:36] $2,565 and this year so far like I said [2:39] I spent $472 charging gas would have [2:42] cost me [2:44] $1,474 and this year I have saved [2:47] $102 so far so adding it all up like I [2:50] said I spent [2:51] $2,840 charging gas over the last 52,000 [2:55] mil would have cost me somewhere around [2:58] 7,29 $6 so in total by not having to get [3:03] gas I have saved [3:07] $464 which is a pretty good chunk of [3:09] change and that's only for charging [3:11] let's go ahead and talk about [3:12] maintenance next and spoiler alert this [3:15] will be a short section because I have [3:17] not done much to my car because I [3:19] haven't had to maintenance wise the [3:20] things I've done so far I've put in air [3:23] filters I've put air in my tires I've [3:25] done tire rotations three times and I [3:28] bought a gallon of windshield wash fluid [3:31] and that's it the air filters I [3:33] installed myself and listen I'm not very [3:35] handy so if I can do it you can [3:37] definitely do it I bought these air [3:38] filters from Amazon from a company [3:40] called the basor they're very easy to [3:42] put in they kit comes with everything [3:43] that you need I'll leave a link down [3:45] below if you're interested and these [3:47] cost me $30 I have put air in my tires a [3:50] few times it doesn't cost me anything [3:52] but it is maintenance and something that [3:54] I can do myself I've also rotated and [3:57] balanced my tires three times I think [4:00] Tesla recommends specifically every [4:03] 6,250 miles to rotate your tires so [4:06] maybe over the last 52,000 miles I [4:08] should have done it more often but I've [4:10] done it three times so far for a total [4:12] of $40 each which adds up to a total of [4:16] $120 by balancing and rotating my tires [4:19] and yes I did have to buy a gallon of [4:21] windshield washer fluid even living here [4:23] in Vegas although it was not from Vegas [4:26] it was from our cross country road trip [4:28] we got stuck in Colorado in a snowstorm [4:31] so I went through a ton of the [4:32] windshield washer fluids I had to refill [4:34] it I sat at a local gas station there [4:36] and that cost us a total of $8 and [4:39] technically I had this maintenance as [4:41] well this literally happened the morning [4:44] after I got my car I had 17 freaking [4:46] miles on the odometer and while it [4:49] sucked it was 100% the other driver's [4:51] fault obviously so this actually didn't [4:53] cost me anything except for some severe [4:55] heartbreak for a while so between the [4:57] air filters rotating my tires and the [4:59] windshield washer fluid maintenance has [5:02] cost me a total of [5:04] $158 and you may notice that I didn't [5:06] include tires and well that's because [5:09] I'm still on the original tires people [5:11] say that Tesla tires tend to wear much [5:13] quickly but at 52,000 Mi mine are still [5:16] looking pretty good and I do have the [5:18] acceleration boost and while I do enjoy [5:20] that from time to time I generally don't [5:22] drive like a maniac so maybe that's [5:24] helped preserve the life of the tires so [5:26] my maintenance cost is $158 which is [5:28] super low but how much would I have [5:30] spent if I was driving a gas car so [5:32] obviously I couldn't find exact stats of [5:35] how much maintenance costs for 50,000 mi [5:37] in the gas car so I asked chat GPT after [5:40] 52,000 Mi on a typical gasoline car how [5:43] much would a person spend on average in [5:45] maintenance costs and it told me the [5:47] first 50,000 mi in a gas car includes [5:50] these things and cost somewhere between [5:53] 1,920 and [5:55] $4,600 so how much have I saved well [5:58] pick whatever number you want between [5:59] 1920 and 4,600 and subtract 158 and [6:04] that's about how much I saved which is a [6:06] lot now let's talk about insurance and I [6:08] do have Tesla insurance and to be honest [6:11] I don't recommend Tesla Insurance when [6:13] something happens it is impossible to [6:15] get a hold of an adjuster or anybody at [6:17] the Tesla insurance company but they are [6:20] the cheapest for Teslas at least by a [6:22] pretty good amount compared to other [6:24] companies I've gotten quotes from so [6:25] Tesla Insurance monitors your driving [6:27] habits it gives you a safety score [6:29] depending on how safe you drive and then [6:31] it gives you a rate based on your safety [6:33] score and I think I saw somewhere a [6:35] safety score of 90 is average but my [6:38] fiance and I drive normal I would say [6:41] and we have no issue getting in the high [6:43] 90s for our safy score so I feel like 90 [6:45] is not hard to do but I just wanted to [6:46] clarify that because based on our safety [6:48] score our insurance premium does go up [6:51] or down a few dollars a month depending [6:53] on our score that month and also I do [6:55] have pretty decent insurance coverage [6:57] much more than the minimum so keep that [6:59] in mind so anyway my upcoming premium [7:01] for this month here in October is [7:05] $93.7 and that's based off a safety [7:07] score of 99 and like I said it does go [7:09] up or down a few dollars month per month [7:12] but let's use this number and compare [7:14] insurance premiums to a gas car so again [7:16] I asked chat GPT what does an average [7:19] driver pay per month for car insurance [7:21] and an average gas car it gave me [7:24] somewhere between 125 and 175 so we'll [7:26] use 150 just for an estimate so doing [7:29] some quick math let's do 150 minus what [7:31] I pay $ [7:33] 9379 equals $ [7:36] 5621 which is about how much I'm saving [7:39] per month by using Tesla insurance and [7:41] like I said I've had my car for a little [7:42] over two years so if we take that number [7:45] that I'm saving per month at 5621 and [7:47] take it over two years I saved [7:52] $1,349 and4 cents on car insurance over [7:55] 2 years and I know some people actually [7:57] say that Teslas are more expensive to [7:59] ensure but most Tesla owners I talk to [8:01] are actually saving money on their car [8:04] insurance especially those who also have [8:06] Tesla insurance and yes again even with [8:08] that much savings we still wouldn't [8:10] recommend Tesla Insurance the model 3 [8:13] collision went okay but we got an [8:14] accident in our model y back in February [8:17] and it is now October we are still [8:19] waiting for our deductible because they [8:21] guy didn't have insurance but it's long [8:23] story but things just move super super [8:26] slow with Tesla insurance so let's go [8:28] ahead and wrap up all up what you've [8:30] been waiting for how much I've spent in [8:32] total versus how much I have saved in [8:34] total so my total cost including [8:36] charging maintenance and insurance total [8:39] charging cost at home and supercharging [8:41] combined [8:44] $2,840 maintenance [8:47] $158 and insurance to use an estimate [8:51] 9379 would I spend over two years so [8:53] let's just say I spent about [8:56] $2,250 196 adding all that up that [8:59] brings me to a total cost of [9:02] $5,245 sounds like a lot let's go ahead [9:06] and see how much I saved using math from [9:08] before the amount of money I saved [9:10] charging was [9:14] $464 the amount of money I saved on [9:16] maintenance so the cost for maintenance [9:18] in a gas car we said was between 1920 [9:21] and [9:22] 4,600 let's just say like 2,000 for a [9:25] super conservative estimate I guess so [9:27] 2,000 saved on maintenance and insurance [9:29] I saved a total of like we said [9:33] $1,349 4 which brings me to a total [9:36] amount saved of [9:39] $7,990 4 which if you ask me is quite a [9:44] bit a chunk of change which my takea [9:46] away from this is that driving a Tesla [9:48] is not super cheap $5,000 still a quite [9:50] a bit amount of money even over 52,000 [9:53] miles but driving a gas car can be a lot [9:56] more expensive so there you have it all [9:58] my cost over 52,000 Mi I posted my [10:01] 50,000 Mi review video and I had people [10:03] tell me despite all the stuff that I [10:06] showed you that my costs were wrong so [10:08] if you think I'm wrong I'm sorry but I I [10:10] showed you how I got my numbers but I do [10:12] love this car and I plan to drive it for [10:14] a very very long time so I'll make [10:16] another video just like this one once I [10:18] hit 100,000 miles so stay tuned for that [10:20] but between now and then we'll continue [10:22] to take our car and a bunch of camping [10:24] trips road trips and other fun [10:25] adventures so if you want to see all [10:27] that make sure you subscribe and and as [10:29] always thanks for watching catch you in [10:31] the next one
