[0:00] - I'm gonna tell you what YouTube analytics to focus on [0:02] if you're wanting to grow your YouTube channel. [0:04] And we're starting right now. [0:05] (upbeat hip hop music) [0:08] What is going on, my name is Nick. [0:10] Welcome to another video. [0:11] If this is your first time here, [0:13] and you wanna learn how to grow your channel, [0:14] make videos, and all types of other YouTube related stuff, [0:17] start now by subscribing and clicking the bell, [0:19] so you don't miss anything. [0:20] So I get this question all the time. [0:21] Nick, I wanna grow my YouTube channel, [0:22] but I don't know which analytics to look at, [0:25] to make sure that I'm doing the right thing. [0:26] So I'm gonna cover that for you, I'm gonna tell you [0:28] exactly what it is that you need to make sure [0:30] that you're focusing on, and I'm gonna tell you why. [0:32] The very first thing that you need to make sure [0:35] that you're focusing on, [0:36] is your thumbnail click-through rate. [0:39] And the reason that this is so important, [0:41] is because your thumbnail is the first point [0:44] of contact that you have with your current viewers, [0:46] and with new viewers. [0:48] So your thumbnail and your title are extremely important. [0:51] So paying attention to your click-through rate [0:52] and your thumbnails is going to let you know [0:54] how effective your thumbnails are. [0:56] How effective are your thumbnails at bringing people [0:58] into your video content? [1:01] And I know you're wanting to know, hey Nick, [1:02] what's a good number to go for? [1:03] YouTube says that between three and 10% is the average, [1:07] so you want to try to go [1:09] for the higher version of that, or higher. [1:12] So, if you're getting like a 1% or a 2% [1:15] or like a 1.6 or whatever, [1:17] then you want to look at your thumbnails, [1:18] just be honest with yourself, look at your thumbnail, [1:20] say, yeah, I might have spent a lot of time on this [1:21] but people just for whatever reason, [1:23] they're not responding to it [1:25] so I need to make some experiments here [1:28] and I need to figure out what I can do with my thumbnails [1:30] in order to get people to respond to my thumbnails. [1:32] A really cool tool to use for this [1:34] to make sure that you're making effective thumbnails [1:36] is called TubeBuddy, I'll put a link to it [1:37] down in the description below [1:38] but they have an A/B testing feature [1:40] where you can actually test thumbnails against each other [1:42] to see which ones the most effective. [1:44] Make sure you check it out in the description below. [1:46] The next thing that you should be paying attention to [1:47] in your analytics is your audience retention reports. [1:50] Your audience retention reports [1:51] are going to let you know how people are responding [1:53] to your content because you might think [1:55] that you're putting out the best videos in the world, [1:57] your family, your friends, everybody might think, [1:59] hey, this is great but then you go [2:01] into your audience retention reports [2:03] and you can actually see how people in mass [2:06] are responding to your content. [2:07] So your audience retention reports are gonna let you know [2:10] hey, how good is my content? [2:11] Is my content decent? [2:12] Is my content great? [2:13] Does my content suck? [2:15] Look at your audience retention reports objectively [2:17] and take the data. [2:19] It doesn't matter what you think, [2:20] it matters what that data tells you [2:22] in terms of how people are actually responding [2:24] to the content that you're putting out. [2:25] Now with the audience retention reports, [2:27] you want to keep an eye on the total percentage viewed [2:30] and you'll want to keep an eye [2:31] on the actual total watch time that you're generating [2:33] because let's say for example that you're putting out videos [2:36] and you're getting a minute worth of watch time [2:38] because they are two minute videos, [2:40] well, if you're putting out a video [2:42] that's 10 minutes long and you're getting five minutes, [2:44] then those videos are accumulating more watch time [2:46] for your channel which ultimately is a bigger win. [2:49] The next one that you want to focus on [2:50] inside of your analytics is your overall subscriber growth. [2:54] Now I know that it's important [2:55] to not get caught up in the numbers per se [2:58] but if you're not generating any subscribers [3:00] but you're generating a lot of views, [3:01] that tells you that yeah, people are coming in, [3:03] they're watching your stuff [3:04] but they're not finding enough value there to subscribe [3:08] and to want to keep coming back. [3:10] Another thing that you wanna look at [3:11] when you are looking at the amount of subscribers [3:14] that you're generating is you want to look [3:15] at the specific videos that are generating [3:18] the most subscribers for you. [3:20] And if you want to fine-tune this, [3:21] I actually built a calculator [3:23] because a lot of people are asking me, [3:24] hey Nick, how do you figure out [3:25] your view to subscriber ratio and all that stuff? [3:28] I actually built a calculator. [3:29] If you go to viewstosubs.com, [3:32] then you can actually calculate this in [3:33] if you don't wanna do the math. [3:34] And I know that subscriber growth thing is kind of obvious [3:36] but I just wanted to mention it and explain [3:39] why that particular metric is important [3:41] because it lets you know the value [3:42] that you're bringing to other people. [3:44] Another metric that is important [3:45] is how many playlist adds that you're getting. [3:48] Now this isn't something that's gonna trigger anything [3:50] or anything like that but the reason that this is important [3:52] is because this lets you know how much personal value [3:55] that you're bringing to people. [3:56] So if you're putting out content [3:58] and people are adding it to watch later lists [4:00] or they're adding it to playlists for themselves, [4:02] that lets you know, hey, people are finding [4:04] enough value in this that not only are they subscribing [4:08] but they're actually wanting [4:09] to watch these particular videos more and more [4:11] and another thing that that's gonna tell you [4:13] is that's gonna say when you can start clicking into those [4:15] is that's gonna say, hey, if people are finding value [4:18] in these particular videos [4:19] and they're adding these to playlists a lot, [4:21] maybe, just maybe, I should make more videos like that. [4:26] Now when you're looking at that information, [4:28] what you wanna think about is you wanna think about okay, [4:30] this video, is it generating a lot more subscribers [4:33] because it's gotten a lot more views? [4:35] If so, maybe I need to make more videos like this [4:38] to get more views and subscribers, [4:40] or if you have a video that's generating subscribers [4:43] at a higher rate but it hasn't gotten all the views [4:46] that some of the other videos have gotten, [4:48] then in that case, you can look at that and say [4:50] okay well, if this one's generating more subscribers [4:52] at a higher rate, might be your subscribe ratio [4:54] that I mentioned a minute ago, [4:55] if this one's generating subscribers at a higher rate, [4:58] then how can I remake this video or make videos like it [5:00] that maybe I could go for more difficult search terms [5:03] or maybe I could try to do another way [5:05] that I can present this so that I can try [5:07] to get more views on this particular topic [5:10] because it's generating more subscribers at a faster rate. [5:13] Another one that's important to keep in mind [5:15] when you're looking in your analytics is the shares. [5:18] A lot of people overlook shares [5:19] and they're like, oh well, shares aren't important [5:20] but in reality, shares mean that your content is so good [5:24] that the people that are watching your videos [5:26] find enough value in it that they're willing to share it [5:29] with other people on the internet, [5:31] be it their family, their friends, their followers, [5:34] whoever, that they're finding that much value [5:36] in what it is that you're doing [5:37] that they are willing to share it with their networks [5:39] with their people that they know. [5:41] And of course, the more that your stuff is shared out there, [5:44] that's the more session times [5:45] that are gonna be started on YouTube, [5:46] that's more people that are gonna be exposed [5:48] to your content, that's gonna start bringing [5:50] more people in and all that stuff. [5:51] So shares are definitely an important thing [5:54] to keep an eye on when it comes to your YouTube metrics. [5:56] And of course the overall engagement [5:58] that you're getting on your channel also matters. [6:01] Now, some people are like, hey, comments don't matter [6:03] or likes don't matter and all that stuff [6:04] and it's not something that is going to make YouTube say [6:07] oh well this video got a lot of comments [6:09] so let's just show it to everybody, it doesn't work that way [6:11] but what it does do is it tells you [6:13] that what you're making is interesting enough [6:15] or the people are opinionated enough or whatever [6:17] to where they are gonna take that effort [6:19] to go and they're gonna sit there [6:20] and they're gonna type in their computer [6:21] and they're going to make that effort [6:23] to interact with what it is that you're doing [6:25] and if you look at it, if you back up everything [6:27] that I've said so far in this video, [6:28] you know, we've got the thumbnails [6:30] which tells you how people respond [6:32] to what it is that you're doing, [6:33] we've got your watch time which tells you [6:34] how people respond to what it is that we're doing, [6:37] we've got your playlist which tells you how people [6:39] respond to what it is you're doing, [6:40] shares, how are they responding, [6:42] the overall engagement on your channel, [6:43] how are people responding to what it is that you're doing, [6:46] the reason that these particular ones are important [6:48] is because YouTube is a responsive system [6:51] and the more people are responding to your content [6:53] in all these different ways, [6:55] the more YouTube is gonna promote you out on their platform [6:58] because you're keeping people on the site, [7:00] you're keeping people interested in your content, [7:02] you're keeping people engaged [7:04] with what it is that you're doing, [7:05] they're responding to your content. [7:08] I made a video about how to generate [7:09] more watch time on your channel as well [7:11] because that's one of the things [7:11] that YouTube is judging us on, [7:13] I'll put a link to that at the top of the screen right now [7:14] so you can check that out. [7:16] It talks about adding the right stuff to your descriptions [7:18] and where to use cards and where to use playlists [7:20] and not use playlists and that kind of stuff. [7:21] Really cool, so make sure you check it out. [7:23] And if you wanna learn more about growing your channel, [7:25] making videos and all types of other YouTube related stuff, [7:27] start now by hitting the round subscribe icon [7:30] so you don't miss anything.
