[0:00] do you really need a backstory to be a [0:02] vtuber backstories and lore are a huge [0:04] part of V tubing culture just look at [0:07] any popular vtuber from Big agencies [0:09] like Hol live every single one of them [0:11] has a backstory of their character so [0:13] with that kind of standard it's no [0:15] wonder why many aspiring vtubers are [0:17] also writing up their own backstories [0:20] but the problem is a lot of them get [0:22] stuck on it and ask people like me to [0:25] either help them with it or if they even [0:27] need a backstory in the first place and [0:29] that ladies and Gent gentl is what I'll [0:31] be talking about in today's video to [0:33] give a good answer we must first have a [0:35] good understanding of what it means to [0:37] have a character backstory in general [0:39] let's look at any form of narrative [0:41] storytelling books games anime you name [0:44] it chances are you'll probably have a [0:47] character in one of these mediums that [0:49] you love dearly these tend to be very [0:51] deep and well flashed out characters [0:52] that the viewer can relate to on some [0:54] level B Jew you fing ass they usually [0:57] have well- defined personalities goals [0:59] and TRS stes that due to the nature of [1:01] Storytelling in these mediums are [1:03] gradually revealed to us throughout the [1:05] narrative this is important so just keep [1:07] that in the back of your head for now so [1:09] how does everything I just said relate [1:11] to vtubers at the end of the day a [1:13] vtuber is a character therefore vtubers [1:15] inherently share the same processes of [1:18] creation that a character in fictional [1:20] stories that we all know and love would [1:22] too they have a design drawn up a [1:24] personality considered and a backstory [1:26] crafted but vtubers differ in one major [1:29] way we are not bound to a fictional [1:32] world and therefore we are not beholden [1:34] to a World's overarching narrative I'm [1:38] free and because of this Freedom we are [1:41] simply not required to have a [1:43] backstory yep okay that answers that so [1:46] that's the end of the video I guess or [1:48] is [1:48] it you see while vtubers don't need a [1:51] backstory it doesn't mean that we can't [1:53] have one remember what I said earlier a [1:56] character's story is slowly revealed to [1:58] us throughout a runtime medium but but [2:00] it's precisely this or lack thereof that [2:02] makes Back stories less necessary for us [2:05] as we can't leverage this aspect now [2:07] that being said it would be a really [2:09] cool concept to have a vtuber go through [2:11] some sort of very intentional story arc [2:13] over the course of their time V tubing [2:15] where we gradually see things and [2:17] changes in their characters the same way [2:19] we see development of one in something [2:21] like a show or book but I digress so [2:24] while we can't necessarily leverage such [2:26] a thing to the same degree a good [2:28] backstory does help in air creative ways [2:30] when it comes to creating your character [2:32] think of it this way when you're [2:33] brainstorming your vtuber character and [2:35] imagining all the different ways they [2:37] could look or act you're already forming [2:39] some sort of story in your mind and the [2:42] more coherent we make that story The [2:44] more coherent our design will end up [2:45] being if all you do is think of ideas on [2:48] top of ideas then it will likely result [2:50] in a messy cluster of elements that [2:52] don't tend to work very well together [2:54] when put as a whole this is a bucket [2:58] dear God there there's more no so how [3:02] can we leverage a backstory to improve [3:04] our vtuber designs well firstly [3:07] designing a vtuber can be its own big [3:08] video as there is a lot to cover on that [3:10] specific topic but for this video let me [3:13] give you some things to think about when [3:14] making your backstory and model design [3:16] the first one should be obvious what is [3:18] your overarching theme are you a surfer [3:21] are you a bird or perhaps a cool [3:25] Mech whatever you choose will become the [3:28] foundation you build upon next ask [3:30] yourself how did this character of mine [3:32] come to be and what are their goals and [3:34] motivations were they assassins that had [3:36] a day job as a surfer or lifeguard as a [3:39] front but because of their proficiency [3:40] with water they specialize in Sea based [3:43] assassinations like infiltrating cargo [3:44] ships or enemy warships 007 style maybe [3:47] this Affinity with water and [3:49] assassination can be incorporated into [3:51] the design perhaps they have a wave [3:53] pattern piece of dark clothing to [3:54] signify both aspects of their character [3:57] thirdly what are they like as a person [3:59] what's their personality if we take the [4:01] previous example the ocean assassin may [4:04] have two different masks they put on [4:06] depending on the day a happy gold lucky [4:08] person when they're at their day job but [4:10] a cold heartless yet badass executioner [4:13] when it comes to doing their work at [4:14] night and similarly to the previous [4:16] Point how can we incorporate this into [4:19] the design itself do we want to lean [4:21] more into the J opposition or maybe the [4:23] personality is more happy Surfer than [4:25] ruthless assassin in which case we could [4:27] design the majority share of their [4:29] outfit to fit the happy surface side of [4:31] them more there's a little bit of small [4:33] but important Nuance of this that I'll [4:35] touch on later but as you can see the [4:37] back story helps bring these ideas [4:39] together and build on top of each other [4:41] therefore fostering a cohesive hole [4:43] which basically means that a backstory [4:45] acts like a tether connecting bits and [4:47] pieces of the things you want your model [4:48] to have and then tying it all together [4:50] to make it all make sense I hope what I [4:53] just said made sense now you might be [4:56] thinking to yourself after listening to [4:58] this be speak for the fast 5 minutes [5:00] that you should definitely go and create [5:02] a backstory for your character and if [5:04] you do great but please hear me out on [5:06] one more very important thing first one [5:09] more thing please don't feel pressured [5:11] to make a backstory if it's not [5:13] something you want to do while it's [5:15] certainly helps it's not the end all be [5:17] all you can 100% still get as far as a [5:20] vtuber without a back story in some [5:23] cases even the vtubers who are the most [5:25] into their characters eventually drift [5:28] away from their own backstory over a [5:30] long period of time that they're [5:31] performing on this proverbial stage and [5:33] this is the Nuance I was talking about [5:35] earlier having a predefined personality [5:38] as a result of creating a backstory is [5:40] something that may Fade Away over time [5:43] and there's absolutely nothing wrong [5:44] with that that is the say there's [5:46] absolutely nothing wrong about just [5:48] being your own authentic self making [5:50] content that you want to make playing [5:52] games that you want to play and [5:53] streaming because it's something that is [5:55] genuinely fun to you in fact if nothing [5:57] else take this one piece of advice from [6:00] this video at the end of a man's [6:01] rambling session if you still want to [6:03] make a backstory feel free It's a [6:05] Wonderful way to express yourself and it [6:07] works wonders for designing a character [6:10] not to mention it's super fun to work on [6:12] and allows you so much creative work and [6:14] freedom to take place especially when [6:16] you start thinking about the cool lore [6:18] and video and and all the cool fun [6:21] things you could do with it but don't [6:23] let it make you feel as if you're unable [6:25] to be yourself because if you think [6:28] about it you're already a deep and [6:30] fleshed out character in your own right [6:32] you've had your fair share of struggles [6:33] that have changed you as a person for [6:36] the good or the bad I have no doubt that [6:38] you've likely had many different types [6:40] of experiences in life now you can take [6:42] those experiences as inspiration for [6:43] your vtuber backstory but again it's not [6:46] necessary if that's not the route you [6:49] want to go down you know a character is [6:50] Well written when they are relatable [6:52] relatability simply put it's just a [6:54] matter of Being Human and well unless [6:57] you're secretly a robot or alien in the [6:59] guys is watching this video we are all [7:02] human we all have our own flaws [7:04] shortcomings ups and downs and [7:07] everything in between all that's to say [7:09] have fun making your vtuber don't get [7:11] too hung up on any one thing like a [7:13] backstory and don't feel like you need [7:15] to act like a different person to [7:17] fulfill that backstory use it as a tool [7:20] to help you but don't let it drive you [7:23] enjoy the process let all that [7:25] creativity out and don't be afraid to [7:27] keep experimenting and trying out new [7:29] things [7:30] keep in mind that over time as you grow [7:32] as a streamer vtuber and content creator [7:34] things will change but don't be afraid [7:36] of that simply because he had a [7:38] backstory or the like embrace it and go [7:40] with that flow because in a way that is [7:42] also you growing as a person and most [7:45] importantly remember that one of the [7:47] best perks that being a vtuber allows [7:49] you to have is ironically the freedom to [7:52] truly be who you are thanks for watching [7:56] and don't forget to leave a like as it [7:57] really helps out see you in the next one [7:59] ciao
