vtuber backstories and lore are a huge
part of V tubing culture just look at
any popular vtuber from Big agencies
like Hol live every single one of them
has a backstory of their character so
with that kind of standard it's no
wonder why many aspiring vtubers are
also writing up their own backstories
but the problem is a lot of them get
stuck on it and ask people like me to
either help them with it or if they even
need a backstory in the first place and
that ladies and Gent gentl is what I'll
be talking about in today's video to
give a good answer we must first have a
good understanding of what it means to
have a character backstory in general
let's look at any form of narrative
storytelling books games anime you name
it chances are you'll probably have a
character in one of these mediums that
you love dearly these tend to be very
deep and well flashed out characters
that the viewer can relate to on some
level B Jew you fing ass they usually
have well- defined personalities goals
and TRS stes that due to the nature of
Storytelling in these mediums are
gradually revealed to us throughout the
narrative this is important so just keep
that in the back of your head for now so
how does everything I just said relate
to vtubers at the end of the day a
vtuber is a character therefore vtubers
inherently share the same processes of
creation that a character in fictional
stories that we all know and love would
too they have a design drawn up a
personality considered and a backstory
crafted but vtubers differ in one major
way we are not bound to a fictional
world and therefore we are not beholden
to a World's overarching narrative I'm
free and because of this Freedom we are
simply not required to have a
backstory yep okay that answers that so
that's the end of the video I guess or
is
it you see while vtubers don't need a
backstory it doesn't mean that we can't
have one remember what I said earlier a
character's story is slowly revealed to
us throughout a runtime medium but but
it's precisely this or lack thereof that
makes Back stories less necessary for us
as we can't leverage this aspect now
that being said it would be a really
cool concept to have a vtuber go through
some sort of very intentional story arc
over the course of their time V tubing
where we gradually see things and
changes in their characters the same way
we see development of one in something
like a show or book but I digress so
while we can't necessarily leverage such
a thing to the same degree a good
backstory does help in air creative ways
when it comes to creating your character
think of it this way when you're
brainstorming your vtuber character and
imagining all the different ways they
could look or act you're already forming
some sort of story in your mind and the
more coherent we make that story The
more coherent our design will end up
being if all you do is think of ideas on
top of ideas then it will likely result
in a messy cluster of elements that
don't tend to work very well together
when put as a whole this is a bucket
dear God there there's more no so how
can we leverage a backstory to improve
our vtuber designs well firstly
designing a vtuber can be its own big
video as there is a lot to cover on that
specific topic but for this video let me
give you some things to think about when
making your backstory and model design
the first one should be obvious what is
your overarching theme are you a surfer
are you a bird or perhaps a cool
Mech whatever you choose will become the
foundation you build upon next ask
yourself how did this character of mine
come to be and what are their goals and
motivations were they assassins that had
a day job as a surfer or lifeguard as a
front but because of their proficiency
with water they specialize in Sea based
assassinations like infiltrating cargo
ships or enemy warships 007 style maybe
this Affinity with water and
assassination can be incorporated into
the design perhaps they have a wave
pattern piece of dark clothing to
signify both aspects of their character
thirdly what are they like as a person
what's their personality if we take the
previous example the ocean assassin may
have two different masks they put on
depending on the day a happy gold lucky
person when they're at their day job but
a cold heartless yet badass executioner
when it comes to doing their work at
night and similarly to the previous
Point how can we incorporate this into
the design itself do we want to lean
more into the J opposition or maybe the
personality is more happy Surfer than
ruthless assassin in which case we could
design the majority share of their
outfit to fit the happy surface side of
them more there's a little bit of small
but important Nuance of this that I'll
touch on later but as you can see the
back story helps bring these ideas
together and build on top of each other
therefore fostering a cohesive hole
which basically means that a backstory
acts like a tether connecting bits and
pieces of the things you want your model
to have and then tying it all together
to make it all make sense I hope what I
just said made sense now you might be
thinking to yourself after listening to
this be speak for the fast 5 minutes
that you should definitely go and create
a backstory for your character and if
you do great but please hear me out on
one more very important thing first one
more thing please don't feel pressured
to make a backstory if it's not
something you want to do while it's
certainly helps it's not the end all be
all you can 100% still get as far as a
vtuber without a back story in some
cases even the vtubers who are the most
into their characters eventually drift
away from their own backstory over a
long period of time that they're
performing on this proverbial stage and
this is the Nuance I was talking about
earlier having a predefined personality
as a result of creating a backstory is
something that may Fade Away over time
and there's absolutely nothing wrong
with that that is the say there's
absolutely nothing wrong about just
being your own authentic self making
content that you want to make playing
games that you want to play and
streaming because it's something that is
genuinely fun to you in fact if nothing
else take this one piece of advice from
this video at the end of a man's
rambling session if you still want to
make a backstory feel free It's a
Wonderful way to express yourself and it
works wonders for designing a character
not to mention it's super fun to work on
and allows you so much creative work and
freedom to take place especially when
you start thinking about the cool lore
and video and and all the cool fun
things you could do with it but don't
let it make you feel as if you're unable
to be yourself because if you think
about it you're already a deep and
fleshed out character in your own right
you've had your fair share of struggles
that have changed you as a person for
the good or the bad I have no doubt that
you've likely had many different types
of experiences in life now you can take
those experiences as inspiration for
your vtuber backstory but again it's not
necessary if that's not the route you
want to go down you know a character is
Well written when they are relatable
relatability simply put it's just a
matter of Being Human and well unless
you're secretly a robot or alien in the
guys is watching this video we are all
human we all have our own flaws
shortcomings ups and downs and
everything in between all that's to say
have fun making your vtuber don't get
too hung up on any one thing like a
backstory and don't feel like you need
to act like a different person to
fulfill that backstory use it as a tool
to help you but don't let it drive you
enjoy the process let all that
creativity out and don't be afraid to
keep experimenting and trying out new
things
keep in mind that over time as you grow
as a streamer vtuber and content creator
things will change but don't be afraid
of that simply because he had a
backstory or the like embrace it and go
with that flow because in a way that is
also you growing as a person and most
importantly remember that one of the
best perks that being a vtuber allows
you to have is ironically the freedom to
