[0:00] Hello, Simon Cardi from IGN here at [0:02] Summer GameFest with Michael Hy and we [0:04] have seen a little sneak peek at [0:07] Resident Evil Veronica. I say a sneak [0:09] peek. We've not seen anything anyone [0:11] else hasn't seen in the world apart from [0:13] that trailer. Are you a big Code [0:15] Veronica fan? I am on record saying that [0:18] Code Veronica was my favorite classic [0:20] Resident Evil. Uh but my opinion has [0:23] changed as I re have revisited them and [0:24] all that, but I do think that this is [0:26] the one that needs the most revisiting. [0:29] I guess you could say from that classic [0:31] Resident Evil pantheon, I suppose. And [0:34] the fact that Code Veronica ties into [0:36] the Raccoon City saga is going to help [0:38] connect what we do have for the more [0:41] modern remakes right now. So, I do think [0:43] it's an interesting project and I think [0:45] this is something that is needed. And uh [0:47] we had a Q&A with the producer and [0:50] nothing else was shown behind closed [0:52] doors. Like you said, the trailer that [0:54] was shown at the Summer GameFest [0:56] showcase is what all the all we saw. [0:59] It's all what you have saw saw back [1:01] there, but we did get some questions in. [1:03] And so we have a lot of new information [1:05] about Veronica, even though it hasn't [1:07] been like physically shown to us. [1:09] >> Yeah, I think one of maybe the biggest [1:10] headlines is that tease we were shown [1:12] was very modern Resident Evil in as much [1:15] as it was first person. I was like, "Oh, [1:17] are they doing Veronica in third [1:18] person?" But no, had it confirmed this [1:20] is a completely third person game like [1:23] the original. And it's interesting that [1:26] the teaser is in first person, but we're [1:27] going to play the game in third person, [1:29] but it makes sense because Veronica is [1:32] quite actionheavy at times. And you kind [1:33] of want that perspective, I think. [1:35] >> Yeah, absolutely. And I think, yeah, [1:37] there was a perception like when I first [1:39] saw the trailer, I was thinking, "Oh, [1:41] this is going to be like Resident Evil 7 [1:43] or it's going to be be like um Grace's [1:45] sections in Reququum and they're going [1:47] to do more of the horror elements." And [1:49] I was like, "That's not really what Code [1:51] Veronica was originally about." And then [1:53] so we asked the producer straight up [1:55] like, "Is this a first person or a third [1:57] person game?" He said, "It's a third [1:58] person game. It's action focused. It's [2:00] from the team that worked on Resident [2:02] Evil 2 remake and Resident Evil 4 [2:04] remake." So, there is a bit of a I think [2:06] there might have been a misunderstanding [2:08] there if you haven't uh gotten this [2:10] information, which is what we're here to [2:11] give y'all. But he did say that, you [2:14] know, think of this closer to Resident [2:16] Evil 2 remake. This does star Claire [2:18] Redfield and she was playable in [2:20] Resident Evil 2 remake. So, he said [2:23] think of that, but there are going to be [2:25] new gameplay elements on top of that. Of [2:26] course, he wasn't at liberty to talk [2:28] about them quite yet cuz it's still very [2:29] early on, but we should expect that kind [2:31] of game. Yeah, I didn't have it [2:33] confirmed if dual wielding is back, but [2:35] it sounds like they're going to kind of [2:37] they're going to evolve the Resident [2:38] Evil formula again. You know, like in [2:40] Reququum, Leon can do things he couldn't [2:42] do in four. So, they're going to take [2:44] that with these characters as well. [2:46] Obviously, might not be as proficient in [2:48] combat as Leon because who is? [2:50] >> Yeah. [2:50] >> But, you know, I'm I'm intrigued to see [2:52] what they're going to do with this one. [2:53] And the producer did say in my session [2:55] as well, he very much treats Code Vernon [2:58] like one of the mainline games. It's [2:59] essentially part of the main story [3:01] despite not having a number. So, it's [3:03] good to see that this is getting like [3:04] the full remake treatment that we've [3:07] seen in the past. And it all looks very [3:09] exciting to me. [3:11] >> Yeah. I mean, like to me, it's exciting [3:13] because again, I've I I remember playing [3:15] this game on the original Dreamcast and [3:18] uh there are a lot of things that I [3:19] don't necessarily remember about it [3:21] because I played it when I was much too [3:23] young to be playing Resident Evil games [3:24] for sure. But you had mentioned to me [3:26] that uh there are some pretty [3:28] questionable elements with the story and [3:29] characters in Code Veronica. And [3:31] obviously in the modern day, you [3:33] probably want to revisit those things [3:34] and your group was able to get a [3:36] question about that, right? [3:37] >> Yes. Obviously, I don't want to spoil it [3:39] cuz for some people, you know, this will [3:42] be the first time they see this story, [3:43] but there are elements of, you know, [3:46] there's gender politics at play in the [3:47] original and we obviously live in a [3:49] different time now, so they may have to [3:51] adjust how they approach that story. [3:52] They did say they're still obviously in [3:54] development on this game. So, they [3:55] haven't actually locked in what they're [3:58] doing with these topics yet. So, they [4:00] want to go deeper, they said, into, you [4:02] know, the mindset of some of the [4:04] characters. Maybe explain what's going [4:06] on with them a bit more rather than just [4:09] present some characters as, [4:12] for lack of a better word, something to [4:14] fear, if you know what I mean. So, I'd [4:16] be interested to see how they handle [4:17] that. they kind of have to approach it [4:19] in a different way, I think, for it to [4:21] be viable in 2027 when this game is [4:24] supposedly coming out. So, we'll be [4:25] interested to see what they do with [4:27] that. At least they very much sounded [4:30] like they're taking that feedback on [4:32] board and looking into what they can do [4:34] with the story. [4:35] >> But that makes sense because Resident [4:37] Evil Veronica dropping the code [4:39] Veronica. If if you're wondering why [4:41] they dropped code, uh the producer said [4:43] that they're trying to get in line with [4:44] the naming conventions of all the [4:46] previous Resident Evils in the modern [4:48] sense where you have like Resident Evil [4:50] 7 was Biohazard, Resident Evil 8 was [4:52] village, Resident Evil 9 was Reququum. [4:54] So, uh they're following that logic [4:56] right there. Uh so, but it is an [4:57] adaptation of Code Veronica. It's like a [5:00] reimagining of it. I I'm getting the [5:02] impression that, you know, when you play [5:04] RE2 remake, RE4 remake, they're pretty [5:07] close to what those original games were [5:09] about when it comes to story. Of course, [5:11] there's some tweaking there. Um, not [5:13] necessarily retconing, but just like a [5:15] more modern vision of what those uh [5:16] stories are and tying them closer [5:18] together, but I think that I'm under the [5:21] impression that Veronica is going to [5:23] have a little bit more creative freedom [5:24] or creative liberties with what that [5:26] story was and how it's going to tie into [5:27] everything else. [5:28] >> Yeah. I also wonder if they're going to [5:30] play into a bit more what they did with [5:31] recre as well cuz the original Keronica [5:34] very much a game of two halves as one [5:36] character then you play as another. Will [5:37] they kind of switch between characters [5:39] more in this one and kind of tell it in [5:41] a bit more of an interesting like way to [5:44] do of how it's maybe not so linear this [5:47] time around. Be interesting to see. But [5:49] like we say at this point we really are [5:51] just guessing. [5:51] >> Yeah. We're we're we're kind of uh going [5:54] off of just what we what we had in a [5:56] brief conversation with the producer and [5:58] from what we've seen in the trailer. But [6:00] um yeah, I mean my thought was that they [6:03] would do a sort of recu thing where you [6:05] have first person horror style and then [6:07] you have third person action style, but [6:09] that's that that is not the choice. [6:11] >> No, no, you were wrong. [6:12] >> Yeah, I was completely wrong about that. [6:15] Um, one thing that was funny when we, [6:17] someone in our group also asked the [6:18] producer about the rev, you know, being [6:21] Veronica, does that mean this is the [6:24] actual Resident Evil 5? He mentioned [6:26] that everybody in every session asked [6:27] the same question. But that's [6:29] interesting because of the continuation [6:31] of the Raccoon City saga like like we [6:34] had mentioned earlier. Um, and the way [6:36] they tuck in the Roman numeral into [6:39] Resident Evil, like the title itself [6:41] with the V I I and whatever with Village [6:44] as well. Uh, they're trying to be clever [6:46] with it. They're kind of being cheeky [6:47] with this as well, but the producer did [6:49] say that that is not the case. There's [6:51] there's being playful. [6:52] >> So, there is still a chance of a [6:54] Resident Evil 5 remake on the table, I [6:56] think. Tough one to tough one to go [6:58] with, but hey, we're going Code Veronica [7:00] first, which to be honest, I think a lot [7:01] of people would prefer. [7:03] >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And like with the [7:05] direction that they're taking Resident [7:07] Evil, whether it's a new game or a [7:09] remake, I think all of these kind of [7:10] fall in line. When you got to Resident [7:12] Evil 5, it became a very different [7:13] thing. And so maybe some point they [7:16] should revisit it. Um, but for now, I'm [7:18] really excited that we're getting Code [7:20] Veronica, aka Resident Evil Veronica, in [7:23] some form. So, uh, yeah, [7:26] >> hopefully we see more soon. They said [7:27] 2027. We don't really know when next [7:29] year we're going to play this game, but [7:31] yeah, that's kind of all we really know [7:32] about Resident Evil Veronica here at [7:34] Summer GameFest. Keep a lot to IGN where [7:37] we'll probably be talking about Resident [7:38] Evil for the rest of time. [8:17] Don't move, [8:19] Claire Redfield.
