[0:00] so my last video I talked about five [0:01] tips to getting into reading novels and [0:03] in this video we're going to be talking [0:04] about five tips to help you hopefully [0:07] get into reading manga for me personally [0:10] I've been reading books my entire life [0:13] and have always been a very very Avid [0:16] Reader but only within the last couple [0:17] of years have I fallen in love with the [0:21] medium of manga as well and now I'm an [0:23] active reader of both this is all still [0:25] relatively new to me and I still have a [0:27] lot to learn but I've also been getting [0:29] a lot of comments of people who have [0:31] been following me for a while because of [0:32] books and because I'm now getting into [0:35] manga they are trying to get into manga [0:37] as well so thought it might be helpful [0:39] to make a video if you are trying to dip [0:42] your toes into the genre hopefully these [0:44] are a couple of things that might help [0:45] you get there a little bit easier first [0:48] and foremost is to explore what's out [0:50] there the primary biggest names in manga [0:54] stuff like one piece Naruto Dragon Ball [0:58] Attack on Titan Hunter I you know the [1:01] big names that you probably hear a lot [1:03] there's so much variety out there so if [1:06] one of those big names doesn't appeal to [1:08] you maybe look a little bit farther [1:10] because manga has a vast variety of [1:15] options interested in something that's [1:17] light-hearted fun Slice of Life but [1:20] still very active and keeps the plot [1:22] moving at a great Pace try spy family it [1:25] has been such a surprise and I [1:28] absolutely adore it big fan of series [1:30] and authors like Joe Abercrombie Malazan [1:33] Song of Ice and Fire stuff that really [1:35] delves into the complexity of violence [1:37] and War and human emotion uh try Finland [1:41] Saga or berserk you love absurdist [1:43] fiction like Hitchhiker's Guide to the [1:45] Galaxy or the Discworld series [1:47] maybe try my favorite one piece or maybe [1:49] you love horror and you want to explore [1:51] a visual component alongside your [1:53] reading check out junji Ito all of his [1:56] stories are self-contained and good or [2:00] if you want something a little bit [2:01] darker but not quite that dark Death [2:03] Note is a really fun series or maybe if [2:06] you're into literary fiction and romance [2:08] and exploring trauma and really heavy [2:10] topics you have stuff like a silent [2:12] voice and fruits basket even if you're [2:14] into cooking and sports and rock [2:16] climbing you name it there are series [2:18] that are dedicated to these things I [2:21] mean it gets real Niche a lot of manga [2:23] series are really big and really long [2:25] and the size of the series might be [2:27] intimidating but there are so many [2:29] series that are very short that run only [2:32] 12 or 24 volumes and getting through a [2:36] volume is very fast a lot a lot faster [2:38] than reading a traditional novel my next [2:40] tip is to read digitally I promise you I [2:44] understand the compulsion to get get [2:48] everything that you want to read [2:49] physically and read it with your hands I [2:51] love that if that's something that [2:52] you're into too I [2:55] hard relate but once I bought this which [3:00] you can use your computer that you [3:02] already own you can use devices that you [3:04] already own but once I got a device that [3:07] I was dedicated to reading manga oh my [3:10] goodness Game Changer why one having a [3:14] big screen to be able to read on is [3:16] great because then you really get to [3:18] appreciate the artwork and you don't [3:20] have to like if you're reading on your [3:21] phone always zooming in on stuff it [3:24] ain't good but two of the cost because [3:25] you get through a volume of manga so [3:28] fast buying physically everything that [3:31] you read it adds up so fast and that [3:35] cost can be a huge deterrent plus I [3:38] strongly believe in allowing yourself to [3:40] quit series you don't like because there [3:43] are so many different types of stories [3:44] out there and because in the beginning [3:46] you'll probably be experimenting a lot [3:49] on figuring out what kind of stories you [3:52] want to read in this medium you have to [3:54] be allowed to quit on stuff that's not [3:57] working and if you're physically buying [3:58] everything oh it just feels like a waste [4:01] of money [4:02] when a series doesn't work out for you [4:04] and you don't finish it and then you [4:05] look at that stack of manga that you [4:07] spent a hundred dollars on [4:10] it's just reading digitally is great so [4:12] there's apps like Shonen jump or [4:13] bookwalker that allow you to have a two [4:16] dollar monthly subscription or to [4:19] purchase the volume at a heavily [4:21] discounted price digitally and it makes [4:25] it a lot less of a extreme commitment to [4:29] start a series and if you're reading a [4:31] long form series like one piece just [4:33] having a two dollar a month subscription [4:35] to Shonen jump and being able to read [4:38] the entire series that way oh it's [4:40] amazing my next tip is if you're a [4:43] complete and total newbie to this take [4:45] some time to understand the medium more [4:47] than likely you have read some sort of [4:50] comic in your life or at the very least [4:53] Calvin and Hobbs or even if you haven't [4:55] done that why [4:57] why even if you haven't done that you've [5:00] probably read the Sunday Funnies or [5:02] something like that something so you [5:04] probably understand the way this format [5:06] works [5:08] you're just reading it you know from [5:10] right to left instead of left to right [5:12] now and from Back to Front instead of [5:14] front to back so there's a little bit of [5:15] adjustment that needs happening there as [5:18] far as which direction you read in but [5:20] you've probably experienced comics in [5:23] some form or another in your lifetime [5:25] but if you're a total noob if you [5:26] haven't experienced comments heart [5:28] Comics hardly at all and the idea of [5:32] changing the direction that you read in [5:34] is very intimidating to you I'm gonna [5:36] link a video I found where somebody [5:37] breaks it down very clearly and very [5:41] easy to understand which panels to read [5:44] first how to move across the page how to [5:47] understand the paneling if you're [5:49] completely intimidated taking the time [5:51] to understand the formatting so that you [5:54] can just focus on enjoying the story and [5:56] being engaged is a great plan next tip [5:59] is to pick something that's praised for [6:01] having a really loyal adaptation a [6:04] couple examples are Full Metal Alchemist [6:06] Vinland Saga free Fruits Basket you [6:09] could probably find a good list just [6:11] through Google the reason I recommend [6:13] this is because I think that it's [6:14] totally understandable to be intimidated [6:17] by experiencing an entire new medium [6:20] that requires a new reading style for [6:23] your brain when I first started reading [6:25] one piece there were things that I was [6:26] missing and misunderstanding because it [6:28] was a completely new experience for me [6:31] as a reader and it just took me time to [6:34] really click with it I still loved the [6:37] story but it is a challenge for your [6:40] brain to reformat the way you read and [6:43] experience stories not to mention the [6:45] fact that manga do they do use a [6:48] different storytelling method and a [6:49] different story structure a lot of times [6:52] so if you're just totally unfamiliar [6:54] with the medium I totally understand [6:56] being intimidated and afraid that you're [6:58] gonna miss stuff so being able to read [7:00] volumes and then watch the series side [7:03] by side is really helpful because you're [7:05] experiencing the story twice one way [7:07] that you experience Transit through the [7:08] adaptation is probably more familiar to [7:10] you even if you're not accustomed to [7:12] anime you understand how shows and [7:14] movies work and I found that a lot of [7:16] times anime are a lot more on the nose [7:19] than manga are they'll either add extra [7:21] scenes to further explore something or [7:24] just kind of outright say something [7:25] that's more hinted at in the manga so if [7:28] you're afraid of missing something that [7:29] could be a big asset experiencing the [7:31] anime along with the manga will [7:33] definitely help with the final tip in [7:35] the video and the final tip in this [7:36] video is going to be the same as the [7:38] final tip in the getting into books [7:40] video which is to get involved with the [7:43] community if you're a fan of Goodreads [7:45] Goodreads has manga on their listings [7:47] there's also my anime list which is [7:50] basically the same thing as Goodreads as [7:53] far as I can understand it but there's [7:55] also online communities and forums and a [7:58] lot of YouTubers that focus on Manga and [8:01] Anime as well and you can find [8:03] communities through them getting [8:04] involved with a community of people that [8:06] are excited to see you experience it's [8:08] their favorite story for the first time [8:09] people who will be there to answer [8:11] questions clarify things that you [8:13] misunderstood help you when you when you [8:16] don't when you need help on [8:17] understanding something or on what to [8:19] read next people that are excited to see [8:22] someone new fall in love with their [8:23] story bringing in the community aspect [8:27] to reading is so so beneficial for me [8:32] it's a great way to make friends it's a [8:34] great way to make it more social but [8:35] it's also a great way to make the story [8:37] feel a lot more personal to you because [8:39] it's become a personal thing a personal [8:42] connection between you and other people [8:44] like I said in the previous video social [8:46] media is just a part of our Lives now [8:47] it's just it's something that we [8:50] actively participate in Daily so making [8:52] books a part of our social sphere a part [8:55] of our way of engaging with people [8:57] across the world it just makes it more [9:00] it exciting and more realistic to make a [9:03] part of your daily life there are so [9:05] many phenomenal manga fans that want to [9:08] hang out with you and want to share [9:10] their stories with you I've had a [9:13] phenomenal experience being a complete [9:15] newbie stepping into an environment that [9:19] people grew up in and that are essential [9:22] part of who they are me stepping in [9:25] knowing nothing and wanting to engage [9:28] I've been so welcomed and you will find [9:31] people that don't want to welcome you [9:32] but you will also find so so many people [9:35] that are just so excited to share [9:37] something they love so those are a [9:38] couple of my tips as a newbie to manga [9:40] that will hopefully help you get into [9:43] manga as well maybe one or two of these [9:45] will be a good launching point for you [9:47] if you have some tips of your own to get [9:50] more immersed into the genre or if you [9:52] have some further recommendations that I [9:55] didn't mention in this video please feel [9:57] free to leave them in the comments I [9:58] post videos every Monday Wednesday and [10:00] Friday on this channel
