# Stop Performing, Start Experiencing

## Summary

The video explores Erving Goffman's sociological concept of the three 'stages' of personality: the on-stage person, the backstage person, and the off-stage person. It explains how these personas manifest in daily life and argues that ignoring the off-stage self harms our public performance, while embracing authenticity leads to confidence and inner peace.

### Key Points

- **Introduction to Multiple Personalities** [00:03] — The video opens by referencing characters with split personalities in Bollywood's Bhool Bhulaiyaa and Hollywood's Split, introducing the idea that multiple personalities exist within us.
- **Goffman's Three Stages** [00:16] — American sociologist Erving Goffman, in his best-selling book, describes three types of human stages, comparing us to stage actors with three versions.
- **On-Stage Person** [00:32] — The first version is the on-stage person: the personality visible to the world, shown according to our mind—fun with school friends, gossip with colleagues, fancy social media posts, and a strong societal persona.
- **Backstage Person** [00:44] — The second version is the backstage person: the unfiltered self known to relatives and special friends/family. This includes weird dances, business ideas, failure stories, weaknesses, and desires shared only with a few.
- **Off-Stage Person** [01:11] — The third and rarest version is the off-stage person: the person in front of the mirror who knows all guilt, fears, secrets, dreams, and regrets. This face is often ignored or denied.
- **Impact of Ignoring Off-Stage Persona** [01:39] — The more we ignore our off-stage persona, the more it affects our on-stage performance. Getting closer to who we really are leads to real confidence and inner peace.
- **Energy Drain from Masks** [02:03] — Constantly wearing a mask diverts energy that should be used for real growth, causing misalignment in life.

### Conclusion

The video concludes that embracing our authentic off-stage self is essential for genuine confidence and inner peace, as ignoring it drains energy and disrupts our lives.

I say that actually three types of personalities exist within all of us? American sociologist and author Erving Goffman mentions three types of human stages in his best-selling book. Meaning, according to him, like any stage actor, we also have three versions.
In which the first is on stage person. That is, the personality that is visible to the whole world and the one that we show to people according to our mind. Fun in front of school friends, gossip with colleagues, fancy posts on social media and
that strong person in the society. This is our on-stage performance. And our second version is the backstage person. That personality which is known not to the audience but to the actor's relatives standing backstage. That means the unfiltered person who comes in front of some
special friends, family or just some special person. Your weird dance, those weird things, business ideas and your failure stories, your weaknesses and your desires, all those things which you share only with a few people.
But better and rarer than both of these is the off-stage person. The one who is sitting somewhere on the side, far away from the stage. Meaning the person in front of the mirror who knows all his guilt, fears, secrets, dreams and regrets. Who sometimes screams because of loneliness
and gets scared when he feels frightened. This is the face which many of us either cannot see or even after seeing it, do not want to believe it. Don't coat your neck with a smile on your face. But do you know what the interesting thing is?
The more we ignore our off-stage persona , the more it starts affecting our on- stage performance [of music]. I do Meaning, the closer you get to who you really are and what you portray [music], that's when
you find real confidence and inner peace. Because if we keep wearing a mask constantly. So the energy that should be used in our real growth gets So the energy that should be used in our real growth gets
