## Summary

The video chronicles the speaker's personal journey from being a non-runner to completing the Couch to 5K program in 8 weeks, culminating in a successful 5K run. She shares the challenges of progressing through interval runs, the mental struggle of longer consecutive runs, and the importance of consistency and a support system. Ultimately, she proves that with dedication, anyone can go from 'couch potato' to running 5K.

### Key Points

- **Starting Point** [00:39] — The speaker was a non-runner who could not even run 2 km before starting the program.
- **Half Marathon Commitment** [01:41] — She and Michael signed up for a half marathon, which motivated her to train.
- **Week 1 Intervals** [02:30] — The program began with walk-run intervals that were uncomfortable but manageable.
- **Weeks 2-4 Progress** [03:45] — Intervals became longer with shorter rest breaks, gradually building running endurance.
- **Week 5 Breakthrough** [04:35] — First non-interval session: a 20-minute continuous jog, which was mentally and physically challenging.
- **Weeks 6-8 Peak Difficulty** [06:08] — The hardest weeks combined intervals and long consecutive runs up to 35 minutes, compounded by running in extreme heat.
- **First 5K Success** [08:20] — After completing the program, she ran 5 km non-stop in 36 minutes and 58 seconds (7:23/km pace).
- **Support System** [10:52] — She credits her partner Michael for pushing her through the toughest moments.

### Conclusion

The speaker's journey shows that consistent effort, even in small steps, can lead to significant fitness achievements, and that signing up for a big goal like a half marathon can provide powerful motivation.

## Transcript

it's Sunday and we just finished all of
week
two thank
God hello everyone Welcome to our
Channel I'm Lonnie and today I'm going
to be sharing my running Journey with
you all just a note if I seem to be
looking down on my phone a lot I've just
written down some notes that I've sort
of summarized because obviously this
journey has been going on on for a
number of weeks so I've had to rewatch
some of the footage and just also
document along the way how I sort of
felt so before I started this program I
was a beginner Runner or technically a
non-runner so being a non-runner I had
to start off with the very first program
which is a couch to 5K program so that's
the one that I'm going to be talking
about and sharing my experiences today
so before I started this program I was
definitely itely not a runner I couldn't
even Run 2 km without dying or having to
stop like it was really bad my
cardiovascular fitness was terrible so I
started to see a lot of running videos
as everyone probably knows running this
year and last year has sort of become a
trend so I started seeing a lot of Tik
toks and YouTube videos and YouTubers I
follow starting to get into running and
I just found it really inspiring and I
just thought it was crazy the distances
that some people could smash and I just
thought it would be pretty cool if I
would be able to do that but I don't
know I was a bit hesitant but then
Michael and I One Day decided to join up
for a Half Marathon this year which is
pretty crazy so yeah one day we were
like should we just sign up for a half
marathon which seemed crazy since we
weren't Runners well I wasn't a runner
at all I was a non-runner and to sign up
for a half marathon without having any
training was crazy but yeah seems stupid
a non-runner signing up for a 21 km run
who couldn't even Run 2
km but here I am today I've finished the
program the couch to 5K program Michael
already was a lot furter than me but he
came along on this journey to support me
and just do it with me help me document
my journey so
thanks Michael credit to him being my
videographer while I was dying most of
the time so week one the beginning of
the couch to 5K program I just remember
being quite uncomfortable it definitely
was a beginner course and obviously
being the first week and the first day
it was quite maintainable it just sort
of got you in an uncomfortable State
your heart rate yeah so it was in
intervals you would walk walk for a
certain amount of time then run for a
certain amount of time so it wasn't too
bad it being the first week you weren't
having to do a strenuous amount of
running and by the time you did start to
get puffed it would go back to the
walking and then you'd obviously catch
your breath which was great before you
had to run again but yeah the intervals
were good because obviously being a
firsttime runner it was really hard so
having the walking Brakes in between
really helped but yeah it was good
because running for the first time time
well not for the first time obviously
but trying to smash long distances it
was hard and running for those amounts
of time so having the breaks and the
intervals in between to catch my breath
was really good so weeks 2 to 4 were
similar obviously to the first week they
were interval sessions but they were
focusing on running for longer and
having shorter rest breaks so as the
days and weeks went on into weeks 2 to
before they were running longer
distances walking shorter distances so
it was getting yourself used to running
for longer without the brakes or at
least without super long braks and just
cutting them even shorter every single
time so it was hard because as the weeks
went on it sort of didn't feel like it
was ever getting easier because the days
and weeks are constantly just getting
slightly harder so you never really feel
like you're progressing much because
it's just constantly hard well that's
how I F I found it anyway so week five
of day three is where it started to sort
of get serious it was the first
non-interval session and it had me
running a 20 minute jog which was which
which was crazy to me because as you
know I said I couldn't even Run 2 km
which is not even 10 to 15 minutes so to
have to run consecutively without
stopping for 20 minutes I was stressed
and I found it really hard but it was
more I was trying to focus on jogging so
they recommend running at a reasonable
Pace where you can hold a conversation
so it's not a Flatout Sprint run it's
more like a comfortable run jogging slow
enough so that you can hold a
conversation so yeah the 20-minute jog
at the time felt like eternity and some
days I honestly just wanted to give up
but I wanted to keep going I knew that
not long 3 weeks and I would be able to
attempt a 5 km run so I stuck to it but
yeah every single time that I thought
about not completing the program or not
going for a run I just thought about why
I wanted to do it in the first place and
that I wanted to progress I wanted to be
that person that is able to smash a 5 or
10 km run and I also had signed up for
the half marathon so I knew that every
single day and every single week counted
towards the training for the half
marathon so for the last 3 weeks of the
program so weeks 6 7 and 8 they were
definitely the hardest weeks there were
interval sessions mixed in with
consecutive running sessions so
obviously the interval sessions were
really hard you were running for long
periods of time and only having really
short rests in between and then the
consecutive running sessions got really
long so they were between 20 to 25
minutes to 30 to 35 minutes long so
that's consecutive jogging with no
breaks
which I struggled with it was probably
the worst time as well to start this
program cuz as you know we live in the
Northern Territory and when we decided
to start this program it was the middle
of the buildup in the wet season so it
was the hottest time and we were running
in the heat and it was just crazy hot so
we finished the last run of the program
on a Saturday morning and I think we
went at about 7 7:30 in the morning
which was already crazy humid and hot
even though it was very early so it was
an interval session the last interval
session and it was I think 5 minutes on
2 minutes off just repeating for just
over an hour and I think we did about
6.8 I think 6.8 km yeah so almost 7 km
of just interval running um for over an
hour so that was the last session and I
remember it being really hot and I
remember looking at my watch after and I
was like to my I burned so many calories
like that was the longest and hardest
interval session we've ever done which
makes sense because it was the last day
of the program so after finishing the
program I felt really good I don't think
I've ever stuck to anything so well than
I have during this program for 8 weeks
no skipping no missing always showing up
so I felt really really good after I had
finished this program I felt
accomplished I felt I had really
improved in my fitness so yeah I was
really eager to test my 5 km run um so
we went the very next day on the Sunday
afternoon to test out my 5 km so Michael
came with me on my test run on the
Sunday the 5 km we didn't film it but I
did include a snippet at the end on how
I felt finishing it and I'll also
include my Apple Fitness time but I ran
the 5 km in 36 minutes and 58 seconds so
with an average pace of
723 per kilm that was my Pace 723
roughly I'm still getting the running
lingo guys so we just came back with we
did our 5K since we finished the program
yesterday I am so dead my hands are
shaking I definitely couldn't have done
it without Michael pushing me I really
struggled even after 2 and 1/2k I was
just my mouth was dry my legs were
burning but I did 5K in 36 minutes and
58 seconds with an average pace of 7
3 723 km per
hour how do you read those pce 7 Minutes
23 per kilometer yeah which is this very
it's very good for Lani like she did not
think she could do 5K continuous so the
fact that she did it very proud of her
she did a very good job I honestly
thanks honey water oh thank
God my mouth just gets so dry I'm sort
of still learning how to breathe
properly running but I did not think I
could do that and I definitely don't
think I could have done it by myself
without Michael pushing me but we've
done it so that is my first 5k ever
running
nonstop so I'm super proud I didn't stop
which was good it was definitely still
challenging um even though I'd done 8
weeks of the program and I was able to
do the 5 km I felt like I really needed
Michael there to push me because there
were times I think probably hitting the
3 and 1/2 4 km mark and it was hot and I
just really was starting to struggle a
bit but he was motivating me and like
you've trained so hard for this you're
almost there and it really got me
through it and so when I finished I felt
like I was almost going to throw up but
I also felt really really good and I
just couldn't believe that I had done it
and it just goes to show if you show up
consistently for that amount of time you
can make happen so I had gone from
a couch potato to running a 5 km run
which I'm very proud of that pace for
some people might be really slow or
people's slow pace but for my very first
5 km run I was very proud that I just
didn't stop and I got it done even if it
was a slow pace um for me it's a big
achievement so if you're sitting on the
couch right now watching this and
dreaming of becoming a runner let me
tell you this just do it it won't be
easy but you just got to make a start
get yourself some comfortable running
shoes buy yourself some cute running
clothes and just take that first step
you'll be surprised at what you can
achieve when you just show up and and
get it done so after the couch to 5 km
program Michael and I went straight into
the 5 to 10 km program which is the next
program yes it's been even more
challenging but I'm going to do a
separate video on that one so if you
want to keep up to date with my
realistic running journey of being a
non-runner attempting to run a half
marathon so make sure you guys
definitely subscribe if you want to
follow my realistic Journey of going
from being a non-runner to running a
half
marathon bye
