[0:00] - I'm gonna give you five tips on how to write [0:01] a perfect YouTube title that gets clicks. [0:04] So if you aren't really getting many views on your videos, [0:07] I want you to try these five tips in your next video. [0:09] And then let me know if you see a spike [0:11] in your click-through rate and overall views. [0:14] I'm even gonna share some of the free resources [0:16] that we use here at Think Media to come up with good titles. [0:19] And at the very end, I have a bonus tip for you guys [0:22] that most people struggling on YouTube [0:24] aren't doing, that they definitely should be doing. [0:27] All that's coming up so let's get into it. [0:29] - [Voiceover] You've gotta just press record. [0:30] - Hey guys my name is Nolan Molt with Think Media. [0:32] Now, recently we had an all-team meeting [0:34] and Sean was giving us a training [0:36] on how to write better titles for YouTube videos. [0:39] And during this, I took some notes, [0:41] and I realized you guys need to hear this stuff [0:43] because a lot of this is just really good, [0:45] practical advice that I think [0:47] most people aren't really doing. [0:49] Now, the first tip that Sean gave to us was to [0:51] avoid insider language. [0:53] Now, I want you to think about some of the things [0:54] that you might say when talking about your hobby or passion, [0:57] that would just fly over a beginner's head. [0:59] So if I'm making a video about cameras [1:01] and maybe I'm talking to the camera, I'm like, [1:03] "Hey, do you want to get a shallow depth of field?" [1:06] You might not know what that means [1:07] if you don't know anything about cameras. [1:08] But if I say, "Hey, do you wanna get [1:10] that blurry background, where you're in focus, [1:12] and everything behind you is out of focus and blurry?" [1:15] That is beginner language, [1:16] and is really easy to understand as a beginner. [1:19] And this is very important for your titles [1:20] because you want the person to actually understand [1:23] your title and what it is that they are going to click on. [1:25] Now, when Sean was talking about this point, [1:27] there's two things I wrote down [1:28] that I gotta share with you. [1:29] One, he said, "If you confuse, you lose." [1:32] And then he also said, "You wanna shoot [1:33] for a fifth-grade reading level." [1:35] So be thinking, how can you simplify your title? [1:37] Make it easier to read and easier to understand. [1:40] Tip number two, shorter is better. [1:43] Now hold up though, because there definitely [1:45] is a disclaimer on this. [1:47] Sean was saying it really doesn't matter [1:49] if your title is long. [1:50] You know, according to the algorithm, [1:52] you still can do well with a long title. [1:54] But the words that are up front matter the most. [1:57] First of all, people's attention spans are really short. [1:59] So if you have a video that maybe says, [2:01] "Vlog 97 - What I Eat In a Day," [2:05] you might want to flip this around [2:06] because you want people to read, [2:07] "What I Eat In a Day" first. [2:08] They might be interested in that, but if they read Vlog 97, [2:12] they're not interested in that. [2:13] They don't really care unless maybe they're a subscriber [2:16] that's following along with your vlogs. [2:17] But "What I Eat In a Day" is broad, in general, to everyone. [2:20] You also need to be aware that long titles [2:22] are going to get cut off at a certain point, [2:24] whether you're on mobile or desktop, [2:26] if your title's too long, you're gonna see "...". [2:29] So when you click on the video, you can see the full title, [2:31] but when you're just browsing through YouTube, [2:33] sometimes you can't see the full title if it's too long. [2:37] And this is why those words at the front are so important. [2:40] Tip number three is to understand the viewers' intention. [2:43] Now within this tip, there's really [2:44] two things to understand here. [2:46] And the first one is to not click-bait. [2:48] You want someone to click on your video, [2:49] knowing what they're going to get, [2:51] not click on their video and trick them [2:53] into getting into the video, [2:54] and then not giving them what they wanted. [2:56] Because ultimately if you do that, [2:57] and people are clicking on your title [2:59] thinking it's one thing, but not actually getting that, [3:01] they're just gonna click right off, [3:03] and it is going to kill your average-view duration, [3:05] which is really bad for the YouTube algorithm. [3:07] So we want to avoid that. [3:09] Now the second meaning to this tip [3:11] is the chocolate-covered carrot. [3:13] Now, my friend Alejandro Reyes, who is a genius marketer, [3:15] was actually talking about the chocolate-covered carrot [3:18] method at our Grow With video live event. [3:20] And I'll make sure to leave a link in the description [3:21] if you want to check out our yearly event [3:23] where you can hang out with us and learn about YouTube, [3:25] and how to grow on YouTube and make money. [3:28] But back to the chocolate-covered carrot [3:29] is realizing what the viewers' intent is [3:31] and what they actually want. [3:33] For example, let's take a look at the title [3:34] of this very YouTube video. [3:37] Ultimately, the video is about [3:38] how to create a perfect YouTube title. [3:40] But people don't really wanna know [3:41] how to make the perfect title. [3:42] What they really want is views, [3:43] they want clicks on their video. [3:46] Now getting views would be that chocolate, [3:48] it's what they want, it's the good stuff. [3:50] Now on the insight is the vegetables, [3:52] the stuff that's actually good for you, [3:54] which is creating a good title, [3:56] because that is what's going to give you the views. [3:59] So you want to think about what the viewers want, [4:01] and what they need, and you want to mesh those together, [4:03] not click-bait them, but deliver on that promise. [4:06] And I know that this is going to deliver on that promise [4:08] that if you follow all of these steps in this video, [4:11] it is going to help your titles, [4:12] and it's gonna help you get more views. [4:14] Number four is practical tools. [4:16] You want to use real data and even some software [4:18] to come up with good titles. [4:20] One thing I love to do is look for good titles [4:22] that are already out on YouTube. [4:24] So I'll search on YouTube and I'll start looking for videos [4:26] that might have a similar title [4:28] to what the video is that I'm going to release. [4:30] Now specifically, I'm looking at the view count [4:33] to the subscriber count. [4:34] I'm looking for videos that have a lot of views, [4:36] but the channel doesn't have that many subscribers. [4:39] Now, if you're wondering how I can see the subscriber count [4:41] right here in the search without clicking on their channel, [4:44] it's with a software called Vid IQ. [4:46] And you can actually go to [4:47] gonna iq.com/thank to get a free 30-day trial, [4:50] or you can just use the free version of their software, [4:52] and look at their subscriber count. [4:54] And we'll have a link for you in the description down below. [4:56] Now, the reason I like to look at the [4:57] subscriber versus view count is because if there's [4:59] a bunch of views, but there's not a lot of subscribers, [5:02] this means that this video is doing well [5:04] in the YouTube algorithm, [5:06] that YouTube is actually promoting this video. [5:08] So that's a really good indicator to me [5:09] that they're using a good title. [5:11] Now, to be clear, I draw inspiration from these titles. [5:14] I look at the keywords they're using in their title, [5:16] maybe the way they've worded their title. [5:18] And then I use that to craft my own title for my video. [5:21] Another really cool gonna IQ feature [5:23] that I use to come up with good titles [5:25] is actually when I'm uploading the video. [5:27] Once I add in my tags, if I go back up to the title, [5:30] it's gonna give me some recommendations [5:31] for adding in keywords to my title. [5:34] This is a really cool tool for ranking and search, [5:36] by adding in some of those keywords into your title, [5:39] is gonna help you rank higher in the search. [5:42] Another really cool tool that we use [5:43] is called Headline Analyzer. [5:45] This is at coschedule.com, [5:46] and we'll have another link in the description [5:48] if you wanna check it out. [5:49] And I just use the free version on their website, [5:51] all you gotta do is put in your title, [5:52] and it's gonna give you a report back [5:54] with a lot of really cool information [5:56] and some really cool tips. [5:57] And it'll even give your title a score, [5:59] and tips on how to improve that title to get a higher score. [6:02] Which brings me to tip number five, [6:04] make sure you stay after for the bonus tip, [6:06] but tip number five is to write multiple titles. [6:08] It's always a good idea to brainstorm multiple titles [6:11] and not just have one that you go after, [6:13] but actually have a few in your lineup. [6:15] And when you write these multiple titles, [6:17] it's great to get other people's perspectives, [6:19] and to see what other people think [6:21] and which one they would click on. [6:22] Especially if they're a beginner or outside of your niche, [6:25] and they look at your titles, [6:26] they're gonna give you some really good feedback. [6:27] They might be like, "Oh, that is some insider language, [6:30] I don't know what that means." [6:31] And this can help you rework your title, [6:33] to go through these five steps, [6:34] and make sure that you have the perfect YouTube title. [6:36] Now here's the bonus tip [6:38] that a lot of people are not doing on YouTube. [6:40] Most people shoot their videos, they write their titles, [6:42] do the thumbnail, and then upload it to YouTube. [6:44] But we actually want to do the opposite of that. [6:46] We actually recommend that you write your title first, [6:49] before shooting your video. [6:50] And then with that great idea and title, [6:52] you can write your content to execute on that idea. [6:56] Now, if you wanna learn how to write a YouTube script, [6:58] then you can click on the screen right now, [7:00] and I'll see you guys in the next video. [7:01] (mellow music)
