## Summary

This video explores the psychological and biochemical concept of the 'winner effect,' explaining how small victories create a positive spiral of success while repeated losses trap individuals in a downward spiral. The speaker, Daniel Penin, shares his personal experience of overcoming a negative spiral in 2024 and offers six actionable adjustments to break free and build momentum.

### Key Points

- **The Winner Effect Explained** [00:02] — Science shows that winning changes biochemistry, making future wins more likely. Examples include rats, fish, and primates where initial victory leads to continued dominance.
- **Downward Spiral Dynamics** [01:26] — Losing triggers a negative spiral: paralysis, doubt, and exponential problems. The speaker experienced this in 2024 after a successful 2023.
- **Adjustment 1: Focus on Small Victories** [02:37] — Celebrate small wins to create repetition and habit. A study by Filipa Lali (2010) found it takes 66 days for new behavior to become automatic.
- **Adjustment 2: Schedule a Reward Day** [03:35] — To avoid burnout, schedule a day to reduce cortisol (e.g., cheat day, nothing day). The speaker gave up YouTube monetization to focus on higher-value activities.
- **Adjustment 3: Value Learning Over Winning** [05:19] — Adopt a 'win or learn' mindset. Success comes from valuing learning, as shown by Mr. Beach who posted videos for years before going viral.
- **Adjustment 4: Keep Commitments** [07:11] — Being punctual and keeping promises builds self-confidence. Unrealistic expectations lead to disappointment.
- **Adjustment 5: Adjust Expectations** [08:48] — Align expectations with reality to avoid disappointment. Memes about 'expectation vs reality' illustrate this common pitfall.
- **Adjustment 6: Visualization** [09:19] — Visualize your dream life daily. The mind cannot distinguish reality from imagination, so visualization provides energy and motivation.

### Conclusion

By applying these six adjustments—focusing on small wins, scheduling rewards, valuing learning, keeping commitments, adjusting expectations, and visualizing success—anyone can break a negative spiral and build unstoppable momentum.

throwing away your potential; either way, it doesn't matter. Science explains both sides of this coin: the winner effect, a fascinating and frightening law governing all animals. And here's why: two rats were
left in the same environment. Researchers allowed these rats to fight each other. In the first fight, rat B was drugged to guarantee victory for rat A. But in the second round, they didn't drug rat B,
second round, they didn't drug rat B, and yet rat A won again. In nature, the fish that wins the first territorial dispute almost always wins all the others. The primate that leads the group is almost always the one that
won the first fight for dominance—a vicious cycle that appears everywhere in life. The more you win, the more likely you are to keep winning. We also see this in the richest people in the world, where each
victory makes them even richer and more confident. People smarter than them are hired as employees. We see this in men: if a woman shows romantic interest in a man, another will
also show interest. And all this boils down to one truth: whoever wins improves their biochemistry. Gaining more intelligence allows you to win again, and the opposite is also true; the other side of the coin is defeat. Because
when we lose our minds, they become our worst enemy. You feel trapped, paralyzed with doubts, and problems increase exponentially until you ca n't do anything. The most common time we stop to think about whether
we are in an upward or downward spiral is when a new year begins. I'll talk about my case: in 2024, I realized I had entered a downward spiral. In 2023, I gained almost 2 million new
YouTube subscribers and almost R$1 million in monetization, but in 2024, the channel stopped, and I didn't feel like recording videos at all. In fact, that gigantic editing team that I trained was now out of work, and
they dissolved into several other channels here on YouTube. So, Daniel Penin's editing spread across YouTube, and several channels grew with something I believe in, which is that when we are in a
negative spiral, we have the best chance to learn something new. At that time, I learned the law of effect. I, Daniel, have made six adjustments that anyone can make right now to get out of a negative spiral and into a positive one. The
first of these is to focus your attention on your victories. Imagine a player in a football stadium practicing penalty kicks, missing every attempt, yet still infinitely ahead of the entire audience. Most of them
don't even know how to take a penalty kick. So, to get out of a victories, even if you think they are very small. This will cause repetition, which will small. This will cause repetition, which will create a habit. In 2010, Filipa Lali and
her team conducted a study. The objective was to understand how many repetitions are necessary for the human brain to develop new synapses and for the new behavior to become automatic. The time frame was 66 days. Think about it: in
January, gyms are packed; in March, they're empty. Most human beings are in a negative spiral because they can't repeat small victories until they become a habit. But Daniel, how
can people, even after making a victory a habit, give up? For example, me with YouTube videos. It's because for these people, the second adjustment is missing: the day. Marathon runners have a " nothing day," Google has productive breaks,
writers follow the page rules, bodybuilders have a "cheat day," and YouTubers have monetization. But in my case, to be able to train an editing team and hire high-level people, I had to give up
100% of the monetization, which was always more than R$1,000 per month. But who in their right mind would give up YouTube monetization? Someone who earns more than that selling online, but those sales come from other efforts—
from my effort in creating new products and producing advertising, not from YouTube. So, giving up YouTube was an option for me, but for you, if giving up isn't an option, you need to have a reward day. The
neurological protagonist of the success spiral is called testosterone; the antagonist is cortisol, the stress hormone. As you have small victories, testosterone increases, and it pulls cortisol up as well. If
you don't have any trigger or day to reduce cortisol, over time testosterone, and you will experience burnout. You're going to give up like I did on YouTube, so to avoid a second time, I allowed myself to set up
my channel to earn money with each video I post. But for most people, earning money immediately isn't a reward. So how do you succeed? You need to understand that not all successful people in
this world see life the way you do. Most people will only be happy if they win, but to succeed, instead of being happy when winning, we have to be happy when we learn. Yes, maybe you already know this: it's the mentality of "I
never lose," "I win," or "I learn." But even knowing this, you don't value your learning at all, right? I hope this changes the way you see life. The month you were born plays a significant role in
how good you will be in sports. Here you see the distribution of births by month in the European Union; births are quite balanced across all months. But now you see the birth month of the players who managed to
become UEFA professionals. More than half of the players who managed to become professionals were born in the first three months of the year. Think about it: in early first three months of the year. Think about it: in early childhood, having 9 to 12
months more of life than your competitors will... It makes a big difference. You're bigger, stronger, and smarter; the team passes the ball to you more, and because the ball stays at your feet longer, you benefit from the
winning effect. So, in adulthood, when these players have a big win, it's because they started early, valuing small victories and valuing learning. This also happened with Mr. Beach. He spent years
posting videos on YouTube without any of them going viral, so he had no monetization and no views. Why did he keep posting? Because the posting was about learning, until the first viral video came along: Mr. Beach
playing Minecraft. Of course, it was a great idea; it motivated him to continue. But he wasn't going to stop anyway. Why? Because he doesn't value victory, but he values learning. The third adjustment, then, is valuing
easy achievements. For a depressed person, getting out of bed early and taking a shower is already a great victory. And to talk about the fourth adjustment, I think I can find it by searching on Google: there is no poverty that can resist... there is
no poverty that can resist... okay, 14 hours of work... no... no... let me change this here... I edit... there is no poverty that can resist... keep the rest... I delete and I
will correct... there is no poverty that resists your your ability to keep your word and your
commitments. Okay, now that's much better, that's it, we've built self-confidence. Yes, the fourth adjustment is to be punctual in your commitments. We stop being punctual because
normally our expectations sabotage our minds. I'll give an example to make it easier to understand: imagine you decide to create a YouTube channel, and you create and post 10 videos on that channel, getting 500
views. It's incredible, you're winning, but your mind tells you that you 're losing. If you had a very distant expectation beforehand, and you created the channel thinking you would be able to post videos and go viral
quickly, after posting 10 you can't make money with YouTube, you have a disconnect between expectation and reality, and this causes you disappointment. I'll show you this here with memes:
expectation versus reality. Suddenly, all the memes about disappointment caused by reality being worse than expectation make a lot of sense. So the fifth make a lot of sense. So the fifth adjustment point is: Adjust your expectations.
Adjusting expectations... and there's still one point left to talk about. I'll tell you something else about myself: I went through the negative spiral in... 2024 When I stopped posting videos on YouTube, I went through many other
negative periods in my life. The worst of them came in 2019 during the pandemic. The whole world went into quarantine, and I was one of the people who lost their job at that time. After my father passed away, I found myself sharing a tiny room with
two single beds, and there wasn't even room for my clothes, with my mother. Almost every night when I went to sleep, I had nightmares. Some I was starving, others thirsty, and some I was being beaten up in the street. I've also had several nightmares where I
died, and it always ended with me. Oh Researching, I realized that there are several studies proving that the
human mind cannot differentiate reality from imagination. So, if that's how the human mind works, learn to use it to your advantage. In my case, I printed several photos of my dream life. I put the house I wanted to live in,
the car I wanted to drive, the experiences I wanted to have, all organized in photos. Underneath them all was my computer. Every day when I went to work, I could visualize and imagine the life I would gain as a
reward. After managing to make money online, this isn't even about the law of attraction; I'm talking about how this attitude changed my behavior because visualizing and imagining what my
dream life would be like gave me energy. I had the desire to work, I saw possibilities I didn't see before, opportunities I didn't see before, and I had the [Applause] regardless of what happened, I will
like a video game. I even explained how the game of life works in another video; it's in this card here. But the final adjustment that made all this possible was visualization until the day came when expectation and
reality united. Imagine if you carried this energy, the result of all these adjustments, in all areas of your life—relationships, work, career—do my life changed completely, and I
helped you. Thank you very much for your attention, and until the next video.
